My boyfriend and I wanted to eat a good poke bowl so we made a stop at Ono Seafood on our way into Waikiki. There are only a couple stalls in the front of the store so parking is not the greatest. Before you enter there are a few tables that you can sit and eat your food. Inside, it's pretty small so I can imagine if it gets busy the line can go out the door. Although, the line moved fast and they seemed to be very efficient. You can look at the menu board while you're waiting so you can decide what you want. They have all the poke choices on there and sometimes have specials posted on the glass where you order. I got the Hawaiian style and miso tako. I was hoping the Hawaiian style had a little more taste, but otherwise still good. The miso tako was my favorite! Yummmmm. My boyfriend got the Shoyu poke and spicy tako. His shoyu was really tasty! The only part I didn't care for so much was the long grain rice because it was just a tad bit dry. Otherwise, everything was good. Stopped in as I had to try all the best rated Poke places on the island. First off, nothing beats the Foodland fresh ahi Poke. But between Ono, Fresh catch and Maguro, I would say Ono is a solid 2nd. What? I can't believe I haven't reviewed this iconic poke spot. Indeed their fish was amazing - fresh and smooth, and their seasoning for the poke was spot on. However I can't give them 5 stars coz I think it's overpriced for what it is. Plus the rice was so undercooked I ended up feeding half of my rice to the birds. It's dry like bird food. Honestly overhyped. This is one of the most popular poke spots out in Honolulu and is usually one that friends visiting recommend. However, it is still delicious but it is a bit overpriced for the portion size. We went around 10am on a Saturday and it was not busy, but people started trickling in right after we got our food. The seating is mostly outside, or you can enjoy takeout elsewhere as everything is served in a takeout container. We got the shoyu ahi (tuna) and Hawaiian style tako (squid) combination which was $17+tax. As most of my poke experiences are previously frozen, I could taste the quality difference - the fish is much smoother and melt in your mouth texture. The marination is on point. However, they gave a disproportionate amount of rice to compensate for a less generous amount of poke (comparing it to other people's photos) so we ended up having to toss half a container of rice when we finished the meal. Of all of the places in Honolulu that I was able to scratch off of my list of bookmarks on this trip, the one I was easily the most excited to check out was Ono Seafood. While the likes of Tanioka's and Foodland have been my go-to spots, whether by design or out of convenience, I had heard more than a few folks mention this was where to go to find the best poke on the island. So, with heady praise like that, I definitely couldn't leave without finding out for myself! Based on the many reviews and photos I checked out ahead of time, I knew before we came here that both Ono Seafood and the parking lot they share with their neighbors were small. So, after seeing a parking space open up just as we pulled into the lot, it felt like a sign we were in for a good experience. Even better, as we walked inside, there were only about a half dozen folks ahead of us in line! Which gave us just enough time to pick what to get for our COMBO POKE BOWL. Whether it be their shoyu, miso, spicy, wasabi, or Hawaiian-style poke featuring tuna, salmon, or tako (octopus), everything sounded so good! -- MISO SALMON POKE with Miso, Ginger, and Green & White Onions Admittedly, this didn't look all that appealing, but it excelled where it counts - this tasted so good! The chunks of salmon were so fresh and I liked how the miso, ginger, and onion flavors meshed so well. Yum! -- SHOYU TAKO POKE with Green & White Onions, Kuikui, Chili Pepper, and Sesame Oil I don't usually get tako poke, but we opted for something different and it turned out pretty well. The pieces of tako were fresh with a nice chew to them and I liked the overall seasoning and flavor. I liked the bit of heat from the chili pepper, but I wish this had more shoyu. Along with how good both types of poke were, the other thing that we really liked was how the white rice wasn't mushy or overcooked. Also, I love how fast the service is here. Granted, the total amount of time it takes is largely dictated by how many customers are in line, but from the time we ordered to when we paid and left, it felt like it only took about five minutes to prepare our bowl (in total, we were only here for about 15-20 minutes). Since I was only able to try a couple of their poke offerings, neither of which are types that I usually get, I can't really say if the poke here actually is the best on the island. However, I have no doubt that Ono Seafood is up there. Based on just what we had, the food is good, the seafood is fresh, and the workers are all super friendly. The closest thing to a knock about them is how their small parking can make it a bit of a challenge to drop in. Even then, though, I'd more than happy to test my luck again to try more of the poke from here! FOUR AND A HALF STARS rounded up for now. read more

A really delicious mom and pop poke spot! We ordered a poke bowl with half fresh shoyu salmon and the Hawaiian style ahi and OMG. The fish quality was insane, super fresh and melt in the mouth. The sauces complemented each of the fish so well and the seaweed in the Hawaiian style ahi gave some much needed texture and umami. Honestly one of the best pokes I've had and it was affordable as well. Unfortunately they only have two small benches in the front of their store, so we took our bowl to-go. This is definitely my favorite poke on the island! I'm a spicy ahi girl & this is review strictly on the spicy ahi. I've been trying other places to compare to here but the seasoning and flavor on the spicy ahi is unmatched for me. The fish is so fresh and the spicy mayo is creamy, sweet, and salty. I love that they put onions, masago, and green onions in it for that crunchy texture. this place has been around for years and so I had the opportunity to patronize it. I also read the many wonderful reviews. However, today is not that day. First of all I had two different poke's for what appeared to be a very small bowl for $18. I had spicy ahi and a miso tako. The spicy ahi was OK in flavor but the fish itself felt a little slimy. The tako was heavily drenched in miso. The rice was absolutely disgusting. Instead of medium grain or sushi rice it was long grain and super hard. It tasted like old cold rice. Everything about this was absolutely disappointing. I don't know if today was just a bad day for whoever made the entirety from the poke to the rice but it was absolutely horrible. We are extremely disappointed and we were extremely happy to finally patronize the place. Luckily we took it with us to eat at an establishment next-door so we had extra food to eat. If today was a visitor's first time eating poke I feel disheartened that they would consider that delicious. Also parking is always a challenge. There is only two stalls that are allotted for that establishment. The two stars is because the staff are nice otherwise it would be one star. read more
