The famous Creamy Spicy Garlic Ahi Poke
Tommy L.

Alii Fish Market was my favorite restaurant for lunch while in Honolulu during our recent one month vacation on the islands. Their spicy creamy garlic ahi poke is their signature dish, for a reason. It is so tasty and has just the right amount of spice. I typically can't handle spicy food. The location is VERY local, noting fancy, with very limited seating or you can do a take out. I would recommend waiting for an available table to get the full experience. The owner is Rob, a super friendly Hawaiian, who exemplifies what real aloha really feels like. We felt like family whenever when we ate there. I went there 4 or 5 times for lunch during my one month vacation. Please keep in mind there are hundreds of places to get poke in Honolulu, but if you want to eat where many of the locals go for poke, go to Alii Fish Market.

Alii fish market is a tucked away gem. The fish was super fresh and really affordable. Service was fast and friendly. My favorite was the ginger ahi. There's a small parking lot with 1 hour complimentary and lots of street parking. There's a few small tables to sit in the breezeway. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting east Honolulu!

Amazing poke with hot items of equal quality. Will definitely go back next time I'm here. This place was highly recommended by a friend, so the rest of us decided to give it a try. The establishment is a little tucked away in a narrow part of a parking lot, but despite its inconspicuous location, the inviting smell that hit my nose before we even walked in was everything but. There was barely a line, and the guy behind the counter was happy to give us samples since it was our first time there. He pointed out their top items, which deserved their place after having just a one-piece sample, but what blew my mind was how great everything else tasted as well. The fish was all so delicate and instantly melted in my mouth. While the seasoning would've normally been a bit much for me, it was tempered naturally by the sushi rice and provided distinguishable flavor profiles for each option. I wish there were more options for salmon, but the one that I did see and get was still pretty good. While I wanted to try the ahi fish patties, fish katsu, and rice combos that they had, I decided on getting furikake ahi wasabi aioli since the seasoned exterior looked so enticing. Final verdict--highly recommend. The seasoning doesn't outshine the fish, and it's not too flaky that you need to be an absolute pro with your chopsticks. I suggest eating it with rice though since it helps balance out the seasoning. While I still appreciate poke from Foodland and Safeway, it's not lost on me how good a hole-in-the-wall food establishment can be. Cherry on top is that the prices are extremely reasonable too. Worth the short drive away from the tourist traps.

Hole in the wall place- the service was the best we've received and super friendly. The guy was super friendly and gave us a little sample as we were deciding which poke we were ordering without rushing us. I loved the spicy creamy garlic ahi. It was out of this world. The ahi was super fresh. We also got the yuzu and the shoyu. Both were very fresh. We also got the fish patties, short ribs, and the fish katsu, spam musubi, and tuna onigiri. Those were good but not remarkable.

I've been lucky to enjoy AFM since they opened and really grateful that Chef Rob and team bring us delicious poke while keeping prices reasonable. My family's faves include: ginger, spicy lomi, lava, and spicy creamy garlic. Besides poke, AFM also has a good selection of hot prepared items. The musubi 's are delicious with the veggie (with edamame) being my favorite. They update their IG frequently with specials and current poke prices.

Fresh poke at competitive prices! Ali'i Fish Market is a small, hole in the wall restaurant across the Old Stadium Park. There's a good amount of stalls and a few outdoor seats for dine in but it most customers grab and go. The long line out the door is definitely worth the fresh poke. You can't go wrong with any of their menu items but our favorites include the spicy lomi ahi poke, spicy ahi lava poke, ginger ahi poke, and their ahi patties. Their fresh fish prices fluctuate so follow their Instagram to see the most up to date deals.

Best poke I've had while on vacation! I don't remember exactly what I got, but there was a lot of variety and I honestly don't think you can make a wrong choice. The staff were all super kind and helpful. It is a little out of the way, but worth the trip.

This is my go-to spot for poke. I love love love the spicy creamy garlic, and my husband always gets the spicy lomi ahi. The prices are super reasonable! The owner prices the poke based the prices he gets at the market, so sometimes the prices are really great for fresh ahi. Online ordering is easy and ensures you get your food before it sells out. Staff is friendly and quick. Parking can be hard at busy times because the lot is small and there are a lot of restaurants there. But it's worth the trouble. Check them out!

My favorite place to get poke !! As soon as you walk in you're greeted by the workers and owner. They have many unique flavors to choose from but my top number one favorite is the spicy yuzu salmon. The flavors have many influences with their ingredients such as Japanese, Korean and Filipino. You may ask to sample the different flavors. I swear I'm here like every week. Ali'i has the best deals for their fish as it is market price. Quality is always consistent and very fresh. Keep updated on their Instagram for specials as well as their plates and if they pop up at any markets!

Sesame Onion and Korean Gochujang Poke

Hidden Gem - Consistently Excellent I've been coming here for a while now, and I honestly haven't found a single thing to be disappointed about. This place is truly a hole-in-the-wall gem. Most recently, I had the sesame onion poke and the Korean gochujang poke bowl, and both were absolutely delicious. The flavors were well balanced, bold without being overpowering, and the quality really stood out. One thing I've consistently noticed over time is how fresh the fish always is. The cuts are clean, firm, and--most importantly--no white strings, which says a lot about their quality and handling. You can tell they take pride in what they serve. They also have a small seating area if you want to enjoy your meal there, which is a nice touch. If you're looking for fresh poke, great flavor, and a spot that never cuts corners, this place is 100% worth stopping by.

Ahi katsu and lechon plate lunch combo

I've been to Ali'i several times in the past and everything they do is so good, they truly just don't miss. Every flavor of poke is amazing, but my favorite is the spicy lomi ahi. They also have the best prices for auction fresh poke anywhere - check their social media for sales and deals. Despite being a longtime fan of the poke, I only recently tried their plate lunch for the first time and was blown away. I've always known their hot food was good - the yaki onigiri and musubis are great, but I couldn't believe how much flavor was packed in the ahi katsu and lechon combo. The mac salad had bits of ahi in it, the sauces were all homemade, and the ahi katsu and lechon were both tasty and crispy despite being packed in a takeout container and surviving the car ride home. I do believe this particular plate lunch was a limited time special, but now my eyes are open and I'll be ordering hot food a lot more in the future. Service is also always super friendly - they're the nicest group of people who are truly building a restaurant prioritizing people first, your money is well spent here. I'd give them 6 stars if I could. This is a very small shop primarily focused on takeout. There are a few seats just outside the shop where you could theoretically sit and eat, but very few people do. There is a parking lot shared with several other businesses and can fill up during peak hours. Street parking is usually not too difficult to find if the lot is full.

I'm hesitant to write a review for Ali'i Fish Market as I don't want to spoil it for current clientele. However, it would be a disservice to this market if I didn't give them the credit they deserve. This market is on point for their fresh, hi quality, non-sinewy, Poki and off the hook Crispy Onigiri. The only place I've ever had a crispy, pork hash, sweet rice, savory Onigiri that is worth going to get by itself. The poki is very good too and inexpensive compared to known Poki markets and grocery counters. A unique version is the Ginger Green Onion Ahi Poki which has the flavor profile of the dipping sauce for Haianese Chicken. Yep, only one of its kind. It might be too salty for some people but I like it. The Limu and Spicy Poki are also very good Ali'i is a small takeout place that has two interior tables but most people buy and take back to work or home. Parking lot and the front door is easily missed. Counter guy is nice and helpful...Island Style...

Inari poke sampler and poke bowl
Jared B.

Alii fish market is my go to poke place whenever I'm in town. Amazing poke bowls and Inari. The spicy lomi, ginger ahi, spicy chili garlic ahi, and yuzu ahi poke are all amazing. I always get big smiles and great aloha welcome from these folks. I'm always very tempted by the hot items as well, like the fried chicken and fried fish sandwich. Don't let the very small "hole in the wall" venue discourage you. Get some of the best poke on the island, asap.

One of my fondest childhood memories is going to Tamashiro Market with my dad…read more When we lived in Kalihi, this was our usual spot. And even after we moved, we would still drive out just to come here for the seafood. That's how special it was to us. The reason why he chose Tamashiro over other grocery stores was simple--it was quality and because of my Nanay (grandma). His mom purchased from here and made so many delicious dishes. He knew what to look for, and he trusted this place. For him, it wasn't just about buying food... it was about getting the best for his family. My dad isn't the type to say "I love you." He shows it. One of the biggest ways he showed love was through his cooking. Even after a long day on his feet cooking for others, he would come home and cook for us. That was his way of taking care of us. I loved coming here with him. It was a five-senses overload--the smell of fresh seafood, the sound of people talking story, the colors of fish on display. Back then when you were allowed to sample a grape or poke to make sure it was good before buying. But more than that, it was time with him. I still remember the excitement I felt when I saw the pink building with the huge crab. I thought back then was to look at everything but now I understand that it meant something more..... something special--time with my dad. It's with a sad heart that Tamishiro Market is now closed. Thank you, Tamashiro, for providing quality food and memories for so many years. You were more than a market--you were part of my childhood

We looked at Costco (they had but they were already cleaned and all the good stuff was discarded), Richard's Meat Market and a few stalls in Chinatown. Fortunately I remembered this place and we walked there. Sure enough, they had tanks of live Dungeness crab. Customer service was friendly but a little slow. We were the only customers inside when we arrived but couldn't decide on how many to buy. In a blink of an eye, the place was packed and it took awhile to make our purchase. When we were finally helped again, we purchased two live Dungeness crabs. She gave us two huge ones! Cleaning was offered but my dad said it'll taste better to keep them alive till we're about to eat them. We politely declined the cleaning and paid. Bring cash! I was going to pay by credit card but they said cash. They probably don't want to pay processing fees. The crabs were still moving around on the way home and up till the moment we cleaned them. Seeing the crab cleaning in real life vs YouTube is totally different! It was a quick steam and we had our dinner ready. Don't worry, we also picked up take out from Thai Issan to accompany the crab. Mink made some homemade Thai seafood sauce. It was the perfect compliment to the plump and sweet crab meat. Yes, she made something in the kitchen! Thank social media or YouTube! Great discovery in Chinatown and we'll be back the next time we're in the mood for fresh seafood.

Odd, as nothing really needed to be "cooked" very long. I noticed immediately that a majority of the tables were disgusting and there are flies buzzing around. In any case, I still decided to order my food as "dine in." I did some shopping while I was waiting, and of course, while I was standing in line (almost 20 minutes later) my beeper went off. You cannot silence it, so I ended up abandoning my place in one of the three cash register lines. Since there are only 3 lines, they do not move quickly. This is prime time on a Saturday, mind you. I went to turn in the beeper and get my soup. The soup comes in a flaming box with a bowl shaped opening with feet, where the stainless seet bowl sits. Now, I get that the flaming box is meant to keep your soup hot... However, WE ARE IN HAWAII. The ambient temperature isn't going to cool down the soup dramatically. IN FACT, I HAVE BEEN SITTING HERE WAITING FOR THE FLAME TO GO OUT, BECAUSE MY SOUP IS TOO HOT TO EAT. Additionally, because the bowl sits on feet, the beef bones weight keeps spilling the soup off one end. The soup is delicious, but this is the stupidest execution and presentation of something meant to be delicious and simple. Also, if the bowl is too hot to hold and drink from... soup spoons would be awesome. ‍
