This place runs so well. You can truly make this your own. The food was delicious. Comforting food for sure. You can order your udon plain and add what you like as side from picking up at the bar as you go along. The udon is made fresh in store. It was so good. Our favorite was the tempura. It was crunchy but not too crunchy so it didn't hurt the roof of my mouth. Sad this place isn't local to me, but definitely adding to a list of places I would return to. We were a party of 4, but the cashier took a tray for me without asking knowing my youngest would struggle to carry her tray. They have plenty of seating and although the line can get long, it moves pretty quickly. Would definitely recommend.
Marugame is the perfect downtown lunch. Super quick and affordable. There is kiosk ordering, which is super convenient and has all the customizations available. I got the large curry udon to-go. I love how they separated the broth/curry from the noodles/toppings to keep everything as fresh as possible. Our take out bag came with all the condiments and utensils needed. Everything was super flavorful, and I loved the chewy texture of the noodles. The large size came with a lot of noodles, so the noodle to topping ratio was not super ideal for me. This is definitely one of my go-to spots in downtown because it's quick, affordable, and delicious.
I love Marugame. I think the whole concept is awesome, simple, delicious, comforting food at prices that are hard to beat for the quality and portions you get. That said, the constant line at the Waikiki location always kept me from trying it, no matter how many people told me it was worth the wait. I don't mind standing in line for a bit, but that one always seemed a little too intense for me. On my last trip to Honolulu, I stayed in Chinatown for a few weeks and was surprised to find this location nearby. The best part? No line. Ever. You can practically walk in, order, pay, and sit down immediately. What a difference! The only con I'd say is that they don't open until later in the day, but it makes for a perfect lunch spot or early dinner. My go-to items are the Garlic Chicken Salad, the Nikutama, and the classic Cold Udon. Honestly, nothing beats cold udon on a warm Hawaii day. I also can't resist grabbing a few tempuras, and the shrimp tempura was definitely my favorite. If you're staying in Waikiki, I'd say a quick Uber or bus ride over here is absolutely worth it instead of spending your vacation standing in line.

Quality udon at an affordable price - definitely one of the best values throughout Oahu! This Marugame Udon location has a range of udon dishes available, as well as tempura and musubi stations in a cafeteria-style setup; grab a tray, place your order and pick up your food, then pay at the register before finding a seat. I had the Nikutama udon, a simple, savory broth with meat, udon, onions, and a softboiled egg. The dish was fantastic; every ingredient on its own was delicious, from the broth to the udon. Combine them all together, and the bowl REALLY hit the spot. I came hungry and still couldn't finish a regular, in case that matters when choosing a size. Portions here are generous. Worth a visit for this caliber of cuisine, and when you factor in the low prices, it's a steal.
Tasted yummy! Line was long but it moves fast. We waited about 20-30 min for a the line that went to the end of the block. On par with location in California. Udon is cooked fresh and the tempura is also delicious. Love the sweet potato, shrimp, zucchini. Unbeatable for the price. Would recommend coming if you love udon and have not tried it before as the only locations are WA, CA, and HI! Tables turn over inside at the perfect rate so there's always a place to sit even when busy. Pretty casual spot. No table service.
Took my Mommy Dearest to Chinatown to get her hair and nails done. After that she wanted to have Udon noodles. And I remembered Muragame Udon is nearby and since I haven't ventured out to at this location before. I had the number 1 Nikutama and Mommy Dearest had the number 3 Beef with dashi broth and of course some tempura goodness on the side. The portion size is filling and the flavor was spot on. Perfectly balanced broth and not overpowering. The noodles have a great bounce to it. The restaurant is busy but luckily for us we went after the lunch rush so we didn't have to wait much. Mommy Dearest commented how she remembered the lines is always a mile long and out the door at the Waikiki location. This was when she worked in Waikiki. The Downtown location is clean and organized and the staff are wonderful.
Incredible operation. We were at the back of the line a block from the entrance, and it took 45 minutes to wait in line, order, eat, and leave. You pick your base udon and there is a tempura buffet you can select what else (and prices vary from like $2 to $6 depending on what you select). They tell you where to sit and the udon broth is delicious! It tasted delicious and we had leftovers. The original size is pretty substantial. Definitely check them out - they are busy for a good reason!

I was shocked at the prices; every other place in Hawaii is double the price! - The food is so good and fresh. The tempura is perfectly breaded and not oily. the noodles are made fresh and the flavor is just sooo good. Perfect comfort food. - Even though the line was long, it was so worth it and went by quickly. I highly suggest you dine in if you can, especially if you're getting the tempura. - The ambiance is definitely more of a grab and go spot with people moving in and out quickly. Definitely worth your time!

This udon is something else!!! I first tried this place at their Waikīkī location and instantly got hooked, so when I found out they had this location, I've been coming here ever since! (Because Waikīkī iykyk!) One of the best parts? Free and super easy parking! It's perfect for pickup orders since the entrance is literally right next to the parking lot door. (Pro tip: have your license plate number handy and ask the cashier for parking validation when you pay!) Parking time is limited (check the signs) but I usually order to-go, and have plenty of time. They package everything perfectly separated so nothing gets soggy. I always add some tempura on the side depending on what I'm feeling that night... they've got a great variety, and it's always crispy and fresh. The flavors are consistently bursting, rich, and comforting, you can taste the freshness in every bite. I've also had it when it's been cold (without a way to reheat) and it's been amazingly tasty even cold! This spot never disappoints! Definitely try it out, you'll be hooked like me!

I always come to this spot in downtown rather than the one in Waikiki because there's never a line. 10/10 for food & customer service. I always order their nikutama udon bowl with extra tempura flakes along with their tamago & shrimp tempura. It never disappoints! Definitely recommend! read more

My favorite udon place outside of Japan! This location is much more lowkey and not as crazy as the one in Waikiki. The service and the food is exactly the same without that painful line out the door. I will say it does get busy but there was ample seating. There's music playing over the speakers and lots of people chatting, which is expected with any fast service type place. The noodles, broth, and tempura are perfect. You know what you're getting every time and the quality is perfect especially for it being so reasonably priced. Could've eaten here 50 times during my visit! read more

This location is right in the heart of the financial district. This location is not as busy as the location on Kuhio Street. Menu is the same and there is inside seating. This place is full of flies and it was not clean when we ate in. A lot of tables were dirty. But the udon is good. Maybe just order takeout. You can do that without even entering, since they have a takeout window on the side. read more

The restaurant was beautiful, similar to what I would expect to experience in Japan (I never been), but I suspect with more of a friendlier staff. It was first time and the women taking the orders did not seem happy to explain what or how the options worked. She stared at me with a blank look and then turned to the other woman there and spoke a different language (assuming about me, not being quick enough maybe?). Despite that encounter everything smelt and looked delicious you can also pick from a Tempura bar for additional cost. Seemed like they couldn't kept up with the people but we found some options. Should probably go before 12pm because the lunch crowd was lining out the door and seats fill up quickly. The food was delicious, thick noodles, and sauce station enhanced flavors! read more

Came here on a Friday during a lunch rush. Don't let the line out the door scare you away. The line moves quick. Fresh udon had a good texture and chew. The creamy tonkatsu broth was delicious, but I wish it had a richer or bolder flavor. They offer green onions and/or tempura flakes for a topping on any of the udon. Tempura bar is grab and go with a decent selection. It's cafe style seating so hopefully you can grab a table for the size of your party. Even with the lunch rush, we were able to secure a table for 3 with minimal wait. Would recommend! I plan to try a different broth next time though. read more

First meal in Hawaii, and I'm already blown away. These udon noodles are made fresh and the broth is full of flavor. Love that you can get a great meal for a reasonable price in the middle of downtown Honolulu. Service is fast and friendly, and they do a great job keeping the restaurant clean, especially with all the foot traffic coming in. Would also recommend their fried chicken and fried sweet potato for sides. read more
I had dinner with hubby here last week. I love Marugame Udon. The udon noodles are made fresh in house and their broth is really good. I prefer this location to the one in Waikiki, because the one in Waikiki always has a line. The only problem we had was finding parking. Come to find out that they offer free parking now in one of the buildings. See pic attached. We got the regular Nikutama $11.15 and the large Curry Nikutama $12.95. The Nikutama contains sweet beef and a soft boiled egg. We also got a squid tempura $2.25, sweet potato tempura $2.00 and shared the Iced Calamansi-Ade $3.50. We enjoyed the udons. The tempura was ok. The batter was on the heavy side. I like mine thin and crispy. The calamansi drink was the best. However, the drink was 3/4s full of ice. The next time I will ask for less ice. read more

I had watched so many YouTube videos about where to eat in Hawaii and Marugame Udon was featured in so many videos so I knew I had to absolutely check it out when I would visit! I went around 4:30pm and the line was not crowded, but apparently the line can extend pretty during peak hours, but they are super efficient and I'm sure it would pass by fast and its worth it! This was such a unique experience. You enter the restaurant and choose which noodle/dish you would like to go and afterwards, you can pick and choose which tempura you would like to eat. I had one of the newer dishes on their menu - Teriyaki Chicken Tartar and it was so great! For tempura, I tried one of Tamogoyaki (Sweet Egg Omelette) and got a sweet potato. Everything was made so freshly and food was delicious. In terms of operations, other restaurants should learn efficiency in terms of delivering high quality food from Marugame because they do it right. read more

What a fun, delicious, and efficient fast food experience!! We arrived on around 3:30pm on a random weekday so NO LINE! But I could see what a challenge it would be to wait, get your food, and then find yourself with a hot bowl of udon and no table to sit at. You go to the counter to pick your udon, and then pick out the tempura you want -- we got shrimp, egg, and chicken...and then went back for more shrimp. So delicious!! Water is also available. Would love to absolutely go back again. read more

My husband is traveling for work and tried this restaurant for lunch yesterday. It is apparently a very popular spot! The restaurant was spacious and well-maintained. The weight staff was friendly and helpful. My husband said his food was delicious and the portion size was great! If you're looking for a filling meal at a unique restaurant with good service and a nice atmosphere, he said you should definitely check this place out. read more

It's the same ridiculously great udon and Ala carte tempura add ons as the Kuhio street restaurant minus the INSANE lines and the nonexistent parking in the heart of Waikiki. We got here at 6pm about an hour before closing and although not all the tempura offerings were on display you can order them and they'll make it them and there. The staff was very friendly (probably because it wasn't very busy) and the service was quick - three minutes from walking in to sitting down with food. Ordered the BK udon with shrimp tempura, soft boiled eggs, tempura tamagoyaki, and zucchini. With drinks and tip around $20/person. Totally positive experience. Kudos Marugame Udon!! Took a really late lunch at work and food places were closed. Thank goodness Marugame Udon was open. I placed an online order and it was ready by the time I got there which is about a 7 min walk. It was 2:30 in the afternoon so it wasn't busy at all. I got the Nikutama and added some shrimp tempura and crab tempura. Love the sweetness and flavor of the broth. Will have to stop in with the hubby one day because he loves udon. read more
