I came here with my wife and friends on a weekend thinking this was a place that had skewers. We quickly found out that it wasn't the case. We were seated at the bar as the restaurant was pretty busy. We ordered some small plates. Everything we had here were good enough for a few small bites that pairs well with beer. The scallops were savory and had a sweetness to it. The fried purple potato from Japan was delicious and had a very nice texture. Chicken karaage was very tender and moist. There is a good ambiance in here with the ceiling lamps and the wooden island that seems to be floating. Service was a little slow considering that it was a decently busy evening. I would consider making a reservation in advance for table seating rather than bar seating. Parking is in the back of the building.

SLAPS IT SLAPS SO HARD Let's talk shokudo because while I do miss the og alas location, dare I say their new menu(s) is a step up? We went when the rain caused the electricity to go out for 24 hours and couldn't cook; thank god kaimuki has power back. The tofu salad (from their limited throwback menu) was insane and I think shokudo might be one of the only places on island that make their own tofu nowadays. It was stupid creamy and the goma dressing didn't overpower the flavor. Incredible. Yukari fries didn't really taste like yukari (maybe add more?) but still tasty and I'd get it again. Soba was perfectly cooked and that dashi came through tenfold. I've had their neba neba soba on the lunch menu and that is some of the best I've ever had. I'm a fan. Calamari was ok, nothing to write home about. Get it if you want, or don't lol. Didn't have room for honey toast but maybe that'll be a review for next time!

It is such a trip being here in this location. Both me and my husband used to work at Shokudo years ago when it was still on Kapiolani and it's crazy how much has changed since then. We went during late lunch and there was zero wait. There seemed to be a few tables open so it wasn't too packed. I decided to try the lunch teishoku special with sukiyaki beef, salmon sashimi and cold soba. I also got a raw egg to put over my rice for some tamagokake gohan. Everything was tasty and the perfect portion size that I wasn't uncomfortably full. I also got to try the cold duck watercress soba that my husband ordered and it was very flavorful and noodles were the perfect doneness. It also had such a nice charred flavor that added well to the soba. I wondered if you could order extra duck for the next time. For drinks, my husband ordered several cocktails. His notable favorite was the mojito which was lightly sweet and refreshing. I ordered a yuzu iced tea which had a nice citrus flavor but was too sour for my liking. We ended the meal with the classic honey toast which brought back so much nostalgia of cutting honey toast in the early morning. We would definitely return for the duck soba alone! It was nice taking a trip down memory lane!

Food: 3.5/5 Service: 3/5 Ambiance: 3.5/5 I have not been to Shokudo since their Ala Moana locations shut down. I came here for their 21st Anniversary Special, which was the throwback menu at the Kaimuki location. We parked in the paid lot behind the building (they do not validate for that lot) or there is street parking. I made reservations via Open Table. This place has table seating and bar seating. My waitress made me feel rushed the whole night, which I already did not like. I ordered 2 drinks and I watched the bartender make them at the bar from my table and watched how it sat at the bar for 3 minutes. The bartender saw me noticing that and ended up delivering the drinks to us instead of our server. My drink was good and I enjoyed it. We ordered the chicken karaage, shrimp izakaya, and the lobster roll, which I will say was very nostalgic for me. I remember these tasting better in the past, but it was still good. The Honey Toast is still the best thing at Shokudo so we ordered it. We waited 10 minutes for the bread and ice cream. Overall, service just seemed slow but at least our waitress checked in with us often. I would recommend trying this place for yourself. I would be interested in seeing how it is during Happy Hour because maybe then I would feel like the food is worth what I am paying. Happy 21st Anniversary Shokudo!

    Kake Soba (Hot) $11

Kake Soba's noodles were chewy and good, but I believe they were not made of buckwheat flour. The hot soup was more soy sauce based instead of dashi. My boyfriend liked the Spicy Tuna Don. It had unagi sauce/sweet sauce on top with crunchy agedama (tempura scraps/tempura bits). The half size is about the size of a Japanese rice bowl. The Chicken Karaage was juicy and flavorful. The outside was not too heavily coated with batter, but it was still crispy and tasty. The miso marinated pork chop was a bit dry. I wish it had been more marinated and more flavorful. The honey toast was well toasted and crispy on the outside, but chewy and soft inside, with a drizzle of honey and vanilla ice creams. I recommend eating this with your loved ones since it is fun and enjoyable to share. Kake Soba (Hot) $11 Spicy Tuna Don (Half) $10 Chicken Karaage $16 Miso Marinated Pork Chop $19 Honey Toast $14.5 *No share plate by default, we had to ask for them. April 28, 2026

My husband and I were looking for an Izakaya restaurant and Kaimuki Shokudo happen to have an open reservation time slot. The outside building is nondescript and unassuming, however walking in immediately triggers a change in vibes. The space is calm and cozy. The focal point of the room is the large bar and the lanterns hanging from the ceiling. Check in for our reservations was quick and we were immediately seated. Their dinner menu is straight forward and offers a decent amount of options. Their menu has dot on the recommended items which makes deciding easier. We ordered the grilled gyoza, chicken karaage, ichibo steak, and half order of the spicy tuna don. For drinks I ordered the Yukari Lychee-Tini. The food grilled gyoza is perfectly crisp and served with a shoyu, sesame, and rice vinegar dipping sauce. The chicken kaarage was also crispy and fresh out of the fryer. The half order of the spicy tuna don was the perfect serving size and served with negi, gari, wasabi, and nori. Our favorite dish was the ichibo steak which was grilled over charcoal. The Yukari Lychee-Tini was a refreshing mix of vodka, lychee puree, salted simply syrup, and lime juice. Overall, a great dinner spot. We will definitely try their soba noodles next time we're in town.

There wasn't that much people in the restaurant during lunch time but our food took a long time to come out of the kitchen. We only ordered 3 dishes. The waiter did apologized. The beef curry wasn't too good. The Uni Ikura donburi is expensive $20 for such a tiny bowl, but it tasted so good. I savored and ate the entire bowl. I didn't care much for the lunch menu. There just wasn't a whole lot that I'd eat. I prefer the dinner menu.

Saw from multiple TikTok influencer recommendations of good food in Hawaii. This place failed me miserably, salmon was fishy, steak is super dry and lean. Scallop is mid, taro salad also mid. Drinks were too sweet. For the price I'd go somewhere else to eat 100%.

This was our first time visiting Kaimuki Shokudo. Since it was a cold day, we ordered hot kake soba with some tempura. We really enjoyed it. To finish, we had pumpkin zenzai, and it was absolutely delicious. Thank you for such a comforting dinner on a chilly day.

Okay izakaya experience overall. The staff at the bar was attentive and decor is beautiful. Maybe we didn't order the right things, but the food was just alright. I tried a few different dishes and the mochi cheese spring rolls were probably the most tasty and fun. I was excited for the Kamameshi, thinking that if it's one of the more expensive items on the menu PLUS if there's a 30-40 min wait time for it, that it must be good. It was unfortunately average at best, and I felt like it tasted like something that I could easily cook at home. I think the vibes in general seem fun and would be better if I came on a date or with friends mainly for drinks. If you aren't able to get a reservation, bar seating is first come first serve.

Kaimuki Shokudo continues to remind me why Kaimuki is such a special neighborhood for food. From the moment you walk in, there's a calm, welcoming energy that makes it easy to settle in and slow down. It strikes that perfect balance between casual and thoughtful -- comfortable enough to be a regular spot, but with food that feels elevated. We ordered a mix of sushi, tempura, and the chirashi bowl, and every single dish delivered. The uni bowl was the star of the table. The uni was rich and creamy, and the portions were generous without feeling excessive. Every bite felt balanced, and you could tell care went into both the quality and presentation. The sushi was equally impressive -- simple, clean, and well-executed. No unnecessary frills, just fresh fish and properly seasoned rice, which is exactly how it should be. The tempura came out hot and perfectly crisp, light without being greasy. It had that delicate crunch that lets the ingredients shine instead of overpowering them. What made the experience even better was the service. The staff were genuinely friendly, attentive, and created that effortless hospitality that makes you feel like you've been coming here for years. Places like this are why I love dining in Kaimuki. Great food, warm people, and an overall experience that makes you look forward to coming back. This is easily a spot that earns repeat visits.

Pot rice to share. Quite delicious. If you like charred rice, let it sit there for a bit

Solid food. Overall good experience. Great service. Our favorite item was the brick toast dessert! The yellowtail was also delicious! The tempura was ok, not the best. Some dishes also could have better presentation like the scallops. They were just piled on top of each other like my mom bringing out her dish from her kitchen. Love the decor inside but could see signs of aging. The place could be a little cleaner. The menu was sticky and bathroom needed some attention. Also, we could use the chase sapphire reserve dining credit here which was the main reason why we came here. Overall good experience!

Thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas Eve lunch here compliments of the kiddies' mom. What? We can spend $150 for lunch- sounds good to me! The female run staff are so sweet, young and efficient. They have a half donburi for $7 if you order a soba dish. Hubs ordered a Diet Coke and a cold Saba soba. I had a peach iced tea and a hot Tempura soba. I ate one shrimp tempura, a slice of pumpkin and a bite of the green pepper( spicy) and shared the rest with hubs. The dipping sauce was good. The batter on the shrimp and pumpkin were light and subtly crispy, really good. I ordered two mermaid sushi rolls and two vanilla honey toasts to go. Hurry hubs go straight home I don't want our ice cream to melt between 11 th Avenue, Kaimuki and home. Sure, you can stop to get Pianomo rolls for the airline staff. Hang on ice cream!!! Be like Frosty the Snowman and don't melt away. It's a smallish dine in eatery. I was so consumed by the sweet staff and food that I didn't give the place a once over. I did notice they do have a bar. The tables were quite near to each other but it was a very low key, comfortable vibe going on in here . I was amazed that the prices for lunch of soba, donburi and sushi for lunch was quite reasonable mostly under $20 with the exception of the uni.

Yes. There is a big public parking (paid) behind the restaurant.

The 45 minute dining limit for two is a deal breaker. Does that start as soon as you're seated?

I think this applies to peak hours. My wife and I went for lunch at 12:45pm on a week day and stayed an hour and a half.

Are reservations required for weekday lunch?

Not required but recommended. We usually go early enough that seating has never been a problem. Also if you don't mind sitting on the bar, that usually has room.

Do you have a Happy hour?

We currently offer our version of a happy hour, highball hour from 9pm-close! Featuring discounted highballs and beer.

    Do you do take out?

They offer take-out only during lunch time; however, this is excluding their sobas. As their sobas are quite hot and freshly made, ordering take out would lose the taste quality if not eaten straight away.

This very much pleases my pescatarian preferences. I can enjoy every bite of the bento without having to pass a piece of chicken or beef to the hubby. And, I enjoy every bite down to the last kernel of multigrain rice. So far (because we're still working our way through the menu), we've enjoyed the noriben bento and the butterfish bentos (more than once). Both are worthy of a dine-in restaurant. The high-quality rice (trust me, you can tell) is a perfectly-cooked pillow for the assortment of bento toppings. They offer both white and multigrain rice. Hubby likes white. I enjoy the pleasant nutty, sweetness of the multigrain. The noriben bento includes a piece of salmon, ahi katsu, and a tempura-furikake fish cake. A generous portion of shredded nori covers the rice and an assortment of pickled veggies compliments the sweet corn. Not only is this bento pretty, it is amazingly balanced in taste and texture. A feast for the eyes and the palate! But, the butterfish bento is the real showstopper. A very generous serving of carefully sliced, richly marinated butterfish tops your choice of rice. The hubby said it's probably the BEST butterfish he's ever had. And, I totally agree with him! Because of the way they slice the fish, the marinade saturates the filets and then it's grilled so the sauce caramelizes just enough to give a sweet and smoky flavor. SO ONO! Like I mentioned, the shop is small but if you get there early, it's full of bentos (fish, chicken, katsu pork, and hamburger steak), assorted musubis and inari, as well as sushi cups. They even offer desserts by Malu Honolulu. What a great collab! Every nook and cranny of this little shop is full of food prepared with thought and care. Only three people are allowed in the shop at a time, so there is sometimes a line outside. Don't worry! It goes fast, and it's SO WORTH the wait. Not surprisingly, they sell out. But if you don't think you're going to make it there early, you can call to order and schedule a pick up. Service is always very friendly and accommodating. Higoto is located on the first floor of Kaimuki Shopping Center on Waialae Avenue (by Times Supermarket next to Sacred Hearts). Parking is free and ample. Really, there is NO good reason to not give Higoto Japanese Eatery a try. You definitely won't be disappointed.

Somehow, I was there at the wrong time, or I didn't have a plan to go to Maguro-Ya. This time, we made a decision to meet for lunch. We didn't have a reservation. I parked in the residential area for free and walked a couple of blocks to the restaurant. Service was very polite and efficient. The interior was cozy and seemed authentic. I didn't feel any air-conditioning, so drinking hot tea was a bit challenging. I let my miso soup cool off before I drank it. I got the Maguro Zukushi Teishoku ($1.50 less during lunch vs. dinner) because it had a variety of Maguro: grilled, deep fried, and raw. I could taste the miso flavor on the grilled fish. I got there a little earlier and they let me know before being sat that they close at 2pm. While ordering our drinks we were reminded again that they close at 2pm so we ordered our food at the same time feeling rushed. The Sashimi Zen and Chirashi Zen tasted beautifully. We enjoyed the quality of fish and variety available. As we were eating the waitresses would come by and take any empty dishes from our sets while reminding us again, that they close at 2pm. It felt really rushed and unwelcoming. Before we could finish eating they dropped the bill off to our table and checked to see if they could take payment within less than a couple minutes. The waitress then came back with a bag for us to take the sake home. We quickly finished our meal and I paid cash so we could just leave at this point. They were so quick to rush us out that while we were standing outside the restaurant the waitress came outside to let me know she didn't put everything she needed to charge us for on the bill so I needed to come back inside to pay an additional amount. After paying a second time she gave something to my sister for her birthday and sent us on our way. Considering there were other parties still seated in the restaurant when we left and they were aware of us celebrating a birthday I feel pretty disappointed about our experience there. We weren't offered an option to order dessert and they were in such a rush to get us to leave they didn't even have the bill rung up correctly. The food was great but we can get better service for the same quality elsewhere.

Customers requested an affordable and hearty bento ( per their IG ) and they served up the Presidential Curry. Thank the heavens they didn't call it the Tump Curry...the roux would have to look orange. Also, you'd have to get a Diet Coke with the meal. It features three pieces of their Mille-Feuille Tonkatsu, two pieces of their Chicken Karaage, and their signature 24-hour simmered curry all over a bed of rice. $22 and bargain for what you get, as I am stuffed...and I can eat a lot. I got an extra side of tartar sauce for $1.15. It was very good, especially their karaage chicken, as good as any that I've ever eaten. Curry is good, if a bit mild, as it is neither sweet ( as one would expect from Japanese curry ) nor spicy like Thai/Viet/Indian curries. You can find Minatoku Kitchen on the corner of South King Street and Hausten Street - across from Long's. Side street parking ( good luck ) or the lot at Long's. Ordered via the Clover app. It was ready as I walked in a couple of minutes before the time I requested.

Initially I intended to order to go, but after I paid (it's credit card only - no cash), she asked if this was takeout or eat-in. I changed my mind and said I would eat there. There were no other customers at the time, so I sat at one of the tables. Within what seemed like a couple of minutes, she brought over a glass of water and the food to my table. When I paid, I didn't factor in table service, so, feeling bad, I look through my wallet but only had two dollar bills and the rest were larger. I got a five out and asked the server if I could get change. She replied that she was sorry they didn't have change. My mistake, at that moment, I had forgotten about the no cash policy. Back to the meal, the hamburgers appeared to be two fair-sized meatballs. They had been stewed in their version of demi-glace sauce. There was a small portion of what looked like potato salad, some edamame, and a vegetable salad with a vinegary dressing. I couldn't easily make out the rest of the ingredients in the list. To my taste, the meal was fairly good. Before leaving, I cleared my table of the plastic fork and disposable chopsticks. No one was at the counter, so I placed the empty plate and glass of water near the counter with the small bills - my way of apologizing for my lack of change.

The 19 course omakase featured so many fresh seafoods, tempura, miso soup, dessert... Way better than alot of other omakases in town For your last morsel you get to pick anything you ate earlier n have it again Could have gone w Fatty Otoro or Popping Fresh Ikura but chose Ama Ebi Why? Because it was so Juicy Sweet n only in season now!

Incredible experience celebrating my parent's 40th wedding anniversary…read more Call ahead to make reservations - we sat at the private table not at the chef counter. The space was clean and had a more upscale feel. Did the 19-course omakase and each bite was incredible. The fish is fresh from Japan, and you can see and feel the attention to detail. My parents do not like "fancy" experiences (they've dined at 3 Michelins but prefer a more laid back experience), and this place struck the right balance. It's upscale but also familiar. Favorite bite was the chutoro and second favorite was the chawanmushi :) That chilled clam soup was something else - I wish I could have a whole bowl of that! Definitely make an effort to check them out!

The sauce they use for the katsu is a familiar taste; they use bull-dog sauce. The dressing tastes like the dressing from Sams Club. I don't remember it being this way. Maybe they changed? I feel like Koromo and Tamafuji are better. I guess maybe this place is considered a take out spot? It's pretty much serve yourself water, bottle drinks only and order at the counter. The place is clean and wasn't busy. You're most likely going to have to get street parking or go to the paid parking area and walk around a little bit. If you want an OK katsu place, I guess this is the place.
