Yakitori Sticks salt style - chicken, Meatball and Arabiki sausage
    Mona C.

Had an appointment nearby and arrived early enough to grab a few bites at this wonderful yakitori and sushi restaurant. The wait staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. They explained the yakitori menu and made sushi recommendation and also informed us it was a good time to order sushi since they weren't super busy. The food came out quickly so I was able to eat a little of almost everything before I had to go on to my appointment but the hubby had no complaints and ordered more to enjoy! The food is soo good!! Like no joke, I wish I had more time to sit and savor each bite! Tuna and Avocado poke appetizer ($15) Yakitori sticks - they have a good selection to choose from, but we ordered things we were already familiar with... chicken thigh ($3), meatball ($3.50), arabiki sausage ($2.50) Sushi Combo A - 11 pc Sushi and Roll (sadly, not pictured) a very nice selection of fish with tobiko, tamago and ebi and ahi maki roll ($32) Deep fried oysters ($10.50) Fried baby octopus in broth ($9.50) It is a smaller restaurant, so unless you go early it's probably best to make a reservation. Can't wait to go back again!

    Happy hour!

Great happy hour experience here! The happy hour occurs daily in a very short window from 4PM (opening) - 4:30PM. The prices are very very good for the food menu! Ordered 2 sushi combinations (5 pieces each of salmon, ahi, hamachi, ika and ebi), 1 3-kind sashimi plate (3 pieces each of salmon, ahi and hamachi), 2 yakitori 3-kind plate (dark meat chicken, chicken breast and pork belly), the 3-kind oden soup, cucumber tataki, tako wasabi, tamago, and a spicy ahi skinny roll. I would say all the food was fresh and spectacular except for the sashimi plate and the 3-kind oden. Sushi nigiri was a bit more fresh and tasted better than the sashimi platter we had. The 3-kind oden soup had a large chunk of tender braised daikon, a soy braised hard boiled egg and a fishcake (that wasn't fishcake....it tasted home-made but seemed like they put way too much flour instead of fish paste). The oden broth was very nice! The tako wasabi was so so good and paired well with alcohol. Yakitori was good but nothing special. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the spicy ahi skinny roll. Tamago was good. And the cucumber tataki was refreshing! Plum wine was sweeter than I'm used to but very delicious. I would definitely come back again. Total was around $96 but we did order drinks and alot of food.

Great place with excellent service! The omakase may not agree with many westerners' palettes so that's one thing to be careful about. Certain dishes like the fish prepared on the robata and small fish that was fried were certainly subjective pieces. The Kyoto style omakase was a very nice touch to our visit to Oahu sharing the experience with ohana. This made it even more special and certainly a core memory. All the sashimi and nigiri was top notch as the clam soup, tamago, chowanmushi, and the dessert were perfectly timed. Our chef was very down to earth and inviting. Forgot what I said but he thought I spoke Japanese. That's one language I wish I really learned. That's for another story. haha! I would recommend to come here with an open mind and an empty stomach. This place has it all for a classical izakaya style experience. The place only seats seven people so definitely make that reservation! Kampai! (cheers!)

Came here for lunch for a girls day and wanted to try this place since we've never tried it before. The restaurant is cute and while small, it was nice how it's partially open so the nice breeze comes through. At first I wanted sushi, but the prices of the sushi were too pricey in my opinion. I ended up getting a yakitori lunch set which came with 2 types of chicken, pork, arabiki, and roasted cherry tomato. It also came with a side salad, miso soup,, some tsukemono, and rice. While the yakitori were all good, they were nothing special. As for the sides, I found it odd that chicken salad was one of the sides because it didn't match the rest of the food and just seemed random lol. Salad was okay, but I think the dressing was the sesame dressing from Costco. Service was friendly, but we all thought everything was just "okay". However, if you are in the area, it's worth giving this place a try :)

Great ambiance, amazing service, filled with regulars! We went in during lunch to celebrate my birthday. Original plan was to go to Sushi Aki next door for their Omakase but we did not get reservations in time. It ended up working out great though because we loved the food!! Their Sushi platters were delicious and also a great deal and their lunch specials looked really good too. My toddler daughter inhaled their udon and their Agedashi Tofu! So delicious. Definitely will be going back to try their Yakitori and other dishes!

We used to come here in 2019-2020 before Covid cause I worked in the neighborhood. Today we decided to eat late dinner but alas, the food was not the same. Sushi was small and dry. Yakitori was just ok. Nothing really stood out. Quality and taste went down the hill. Service was ok and ambiance was ok with some loud tourist. Won't be back. The food quality and the price are not worth it.

This place was an easy 10/10 for me. every item i had was light and hearty yet flavorful. I would come back here in a heartbeat. The service is really good, they're really fast and greet you as you come in and as you go. I sat at the counter and thought it was the best seat because you can watch them grill meats in front of you. The inside was really nice and had a clean aesthetic. Great for indecisive people like me who want to try a bit of everything! Surprised this place isn't talked about more.

Chirashi and tempura lunch teishoku set

Went here for lunch and the prices are so reasonable. I really loved my teishoku set I got. It's very cute spot with a very open air concept. The server was very nice and helpful. The fish was fresh and everything tasted home cooked and fresh. If you're looking for a casual lunch spot I recommend this spot.

A friend was visiting and wanted fresh and authentic sushi. It was an odd time and most places were closed, except the spot. Though I've been to the shopping area, multiple times, never to this restaurant it is a little hidden, but super cute. Bottom line, service was friendly,, the fish was fresh and prepared dwell. It was a little on the pricey side, but acceptable given the quality.

We had just returned from staying in Las Vegas when my husband's relatives called to catch up with us since we've not seen them for the past month. My husband's relatives asked me for restaurant recommendations in the Ala Moana or nearby neighborhoods since they would have a business appointment there. Luckily, I saw and read several other Elites' high rated reviews for Japanese Restaurant Aki in the Kaimukī neighborhood and suggested this tiny Japanese restaurant as our meeting point. I called for lunch reservations, and the gentleman who answered the phone asked if I was making a reservation for izakaya or sushi bar service. Since our foursome planned to have lunch and gab for a while, I chose the izakaya side of their restaurant. Fortunately, we got a reservation on a Saturday near restaurant's lunch hour peak time. We located the restaurant's entrance quickly from the 11th Avenue entrance of the Kaimukī Municipal Parking Lot and easily found parking. My husband's relatives had arrived earlier than we did and snagged the reserved table. The server placed several menus on the table since our guests were seated before us. While we perused the menus, the server came by to inform us about the daily specials and fresh from-the-market fish. We all settled on bentos from the Lunch & Takeout Menu. FOOD: - #1 5-piece sushi & soft shell crab bento: I chose the first item on the menu since it appealed to me the most. The bento was a good balance of fresh and made-to-order items served at hot and cold temperatures. The miso soup was served piping hot, and my palate was refreshed by the tossed green salad with ginger sesame seed dressing and sweet pickled ginger. The made-to-order nigirizushi had fresh tender slices of fish atop warm sushi rice, and crisp tempura battered soft shell crab was hot from the fryer. The tempura battered soft-shell crab was meaty, sweet, and slightly salty. I noticed that my husband started eyeing my bento and quietly whispered that my bento looked better than his. $22.50 - #9 Fried chicken & pork cutlet bento: my husband selected this bento because he was attracted to the deep-fried proteins. The karaage (fried) chicken had been marinated and was flavorful, although the fried chicken pieces were a bit dry, possibly overcooked. The three strips of pork cutlet (tonkatsu) were tender with a light crunchiness from the panko breading. He liked his bento and wolfed it down while eyeing the bentos of our guests and mine. $15.00 - #8 5-piece yakitori bento: our guests ordered this bento. The assorted skewered meats (chicken thigh, chicken breast, pork belly, and Arabiki sausage) were grilled over an open flame which enhanced the meat flavors with a light smokiness. The tossed green salad and steamed white rice completed the meal. There was a dish of refreshing and sweet pickled sushi ginger (gari) to cleanse and complement the grilled meats and rice. $15.50 This restaurant's open front allowed cool breezes to flow while we ate on this hot, sunny afternoon. The rustic Japanese interior decor was comfortable and welcoming. We'd return to this cute neighborhood Japanese restaurant for another meal at their izakaya side or perhaps for sushi bar service.

I decided to finally go out of my usual choices and try Ginza out. Ginza is located in the main ward building (the one with the theater), on the side, between Men's Warehouse and L&L. We got seated fairly quickly and was given water. Upon ordering we were also given edamame to nom on while we waited. We also decided to order two rolls, an AAB combo set to try a variety of things and fried calamari for food measure. We got: * Jen's Paradise: 9.7/10, heavily recommend. I was really craving sear salmon and it definitely helped to satisfy that craving. I didn't realize that the roll part itself ONLY has shrimp tempura within the nori (no crab salad, avo, etc). * Bomb: 8/10, clearly I lacked my reading comprehension skills this day because I didn't realize that this was baked... so when it came out and the entire roll was fully cooked I was heart broken. It tasted good, just not what I particular want at a sushi restaurant. * Chicken Karaage: 5/10. I do NOT recommend this. They remined me of mochiko chicken, but these were not very meaty or flavorful. * Fried Calamari: 10/10, fried to perfectly in my opinion, each piece was plump and delicious. * Miso Butterfish: 8.9/10, it was good, flaky and flavorful. Just not something I would order again, but it was good to try esp it is something they're supposedly known for. * Mixed Tempura: 10/10, yum I love mixed tempura, no notes, it was hot and crunchy. I would like to mention that our wait was quite long. I don't know why because they weren't like SUPER busy. It took 10-15 for us to get the miso soup and salad for the combo. +5 for the calamari, +5 for the first roll then a few minutes after for the rest. I feel like 15-20 minutes for our first actual item (calamari) to come is kind of crazy, it kept being brought to the wrong table (2-3 times). Our server apologized so its not a huge deal. Otherwise, I still enjoyed our experience. I would definitely come back again to try the rolls I would enjoy more (utilizing my reading skills a bit better LOL).

Cold, clean, glistening with that dangerous little shimmer that tells you somebody in the supply chain actually cared. You can taste the quality immediately. The kind of quality that silences a table for half a second. And credit where it is due: almost everything I tried ranged from very good to genuinely great. But then the room begins speaking. And suddenly the spell breaks. The atmosphere feels like someone took a serious sushi counter, stripped away all sensuality, all elegance, all ritual, then dropped it inside a fluorescent island diner where exhausted civilians came to discuss parking validation and Costco receipts. It is the culinary equivalent of wearing a Rolex with orthopedic sneakers. The contradiction never stops humming beneath the experience. You sit there eating beautiful fish while surrounded by an energy that feels strangely... transactional. Heavy. Casual in the least flattering way. A room with no mystery. No seduction. No gravity. Like Zippy's accidentally wandered into the tuna trade and struck gold. And on an island like Oahu, where atmosphere matters almost as much as the fish itself that becomes a real problem. Because sushi is not merely consumption. It is theater.Restraint.Texture.Whispered precision. The best sushi spots on Oahu understand this instinctively. They understand that exceptional fish alone is not enough. You are paying for transportive experience. For mood. For elegance. For the feeling that the evening exists slightly outside ordinary life. At Mitch's, the fish reaches for Tokyo while the room drags you back toward a tired strip mall off the freeway. And then there's the crowd. Not evil people. Not rude people. Just an oddly low-rent energy orbiting genuinely premium seafood. The kind of room where one table is eating remarkable otoro while another feels one argument away from discussing used-car financing over soy sauce packets. It creates dissonance. Especially considering the prices. Because at those prices, you begin comparing the full experience not merely the fish quality and that is where Mitch's stumbles hard. There are multiple sushi spots across Oahu that equal or surpass the seafood while also delivering beauty, atmosphere, intimacy, and actual emotional texture. So what remains is this strange contradiction: Mitch's serves fish far above the dignity of its own ambience Which almost makes it fascinating. Would I be back - no . You can get same and better quality fish, much better vine, better part of town for the same Price.

Had an amazing omakase experience at Sushi Ginza Onodera. The staff were incredibly friendly and…read moreattentive, which made the whole experience feel welcoming rather than overly formal. Every piece of sushi was beautifully presented not overwhelming. You can really tell the chefs put a lot of thought into the balance of flavors and textures. One of my favorite bites was a sashimi piece topped with something that looked like finely grated cheese (not sure what it actually was), but it melted perfectly with the fish and added a really unique savory flavor. The chefs and staff also had a good sense of humor. At one point they served kinki fish and jokingly explained that the English translation sometimes gets called "idiot fish," which got everyone laughing at the counter. The omakase is definitely on the pricier side, but the quality, presentation, and overall experience made it very satisfying. If you're looking for a refined sushi experience with great service and beautifully crafted bites, this place is worth the splurge.
