OMG! This was such a fresh and cozy spot for an omakase experience. I visited with my husband and two kids, and even the children absolutely loved the eel sushi. Since they offer free corkage, my husband and I were able to perfectly pair our meal with both white and red wines. A huge thank you to the owners for being so kind and welcoming! We'll definitely be back soon. If you're looking to enjoy delicious sushi with family, friends, or colleagues, I highly recommend this place!

Located next to Grace's on Beretania in a space that feels like storage space that has been converted into a quaint and cozy sushi bar, Sushi You is a casual and intimate space that makes you feel very comfortable with piano music playing in the background at a pleasant volume. It looks like it can seat about 10 at the bar with a couple tables for two and a couple tables that can seat about five. Chef Eiichi formerly of Tokoname in Kailua, who took it over from the previous owner, is very gracious and polite unlike some other sushi chefs that can be intimidating. He is assisted by his wife who is also sweet and 2 helpers. We went on a Thursday night and were surprised at how busy they were. The place is rather leisurely so good if you BYOB, then you can drink in between courses. During the day they serve take out only. The food consists of super fresh cuts of sushi and sashimi preceded by delicious little morsels that display the chef's creativity and skill in bringing out the textures and flavors of fish. I like that it was a bit different from other omakase that I've had and prices were relatively reasonable compared to many of the other places that have been popping up around town. 1) salad 2) spicy ahi **3)baby squid hotaruika with eggplant 4) ahi yamakake 5) unagi avocado with uni caviar and cream cheese **6) Hokkaido tako with lime, salt, and miso-amazing texture!! Super fresh, sweet and no fishy taste at all *7)katsuo tataki topped with dried bonito 8)butterfish with renkon, asparagus and potato salad **9)sashimi platter: amaebi, Chutoro, hamachi, mirugai, hotate, saba-lightly seared *10)chawanmushi- good dashi flavor **11) nigiri sushi: maguro, ebi, tai, salmon, anago, **uni / ikura , tamago-love how the chef cut the fish. Salmon had a lovely light smoky flavor! 12)miso soup with ebi head Lots of dishes were served with lime which was a nice refreshing complement to the seafood. The dishes that stood out to me were the tako and mirugai! I wondered how the chef was able to was to get the tako so crunchy and soft on the same piece of meat. And I was impressed that the mirugai was one of the crunchiest I had ever had! TBT I'm not sure it was actually mirugai since we were given almost no information on what we were eating. Suggestions: I do wish they were more detailed and informative in their verbal descriptions when presenting the food. I mean talk about dumbing it down. Instead of, "This is sashimi," I would have appreciated at least a list of the various fish, and even better, where they were caught. We laughed at how drastically different this was from some other places where they can describe a dish in a paragraph. This place is unpretentious which makes it nice and comfortable for folks who want good quality sushi/ sashimi without having to feel judged or uptight when they eat. Food:5 stars Service: 4 ( lack of information and timing was off because they were slammed due to an IG post) Ambiance: 4.5 rustic Total: Rounded up to 5

Went for my birthday, my first Omakase experience !! Establishment is run by a SUPER kind Japanese couple. Presentation of the food was beautiful, for the price. Some items tasted pretty good, some were meh, and some were unpleasant. I'm biased, I hate salmon. So I didn't enough any of the 3 salmon pieces. The cooked salmon, the salmon nigiri, and the ikura/uni nigiri. Which is such a shame because I LOVE uni. But the ikura destroyed the uni :( The whale sashimi was inedible, almost. Texture was not pleasant, in my opinion, it's similar to the hard bottom of a balut. It is one of the most affordable Omakases here, so it was decent for the price. It was also a good amount of food, was pretty full. The chawanmushi was extremely heavy and filling, not my favorite. The large pieces of veggies in it were unappetizing. Not a bad experience even though I didn't like a lot of the bites. There were only 4 other people in there with us, so I guess they're not too busy. Very quiet but relaxed atmosphere.

We went there for dinner, which is omakase. As this is a small cozy restaurant, we called ahead to make reservation for two. Food: excellent. We enjoyed every single dish which is fresh, well presented and prepared. Service: excellent. They explained what's in each dish. The waitress and chef were very friendly and attentive. Ambiance: good date night place. Nicely decorated and played soft jazz music in the background. We will definitely go back in the future and recommend this place.

What a wonderful local delight for omakase! This is a local no frills dining with good food. You bring your own drinks and serve yourself with glasses or cups. We were served 12 courses! Enough to fill you up. The chefs did try to mix things up with more "western" dishes from the traditional Japanese fare...some were more successful than others. Started with a romaine salad in a miso sesame vinaigrette with bacon bits and walnuts. Then baby squid with pickled cucumbers (a bit briny for my tastes). Next fresh shrimp with uni and caviar. Baby octopus with a white fish sashimi in olive oil(pretty presentation but heavy on olive oil and lack of flavor). The unagi over avocado in sauce was a favorite in our group. There was a delicious ahi belly as well. Then an unusual cabbage roll...very delicious but just odd in the meal pairings. The miso butterfish was a wonderful morsel with potato salad and steamed eggplant. Needed the potatoes to balance the saltiness of the fish. By this time I'm pretty full. The next two dishes were the traditional sushi and sashimi plates. They were ok. Next was the miso soup followed by a strawberry custard/flan. Overall a good meal in a wonderful local setting at a good price point ($110 per person).

February 2024 NEW OWNER took over. Call for availability and reservations. CLOSED SUNDAYS FREE PARKING. Located on the side of Graces Drive Inn on Beretania St where Times Supermarket is. BYOB and they will provide glasses for beer and sake. Please provide your own ice. Chef Eiichi & Wife Izumi are the new owners of Sushi You. They are a very nice and personable couple. The former Chef retired and gave them the opportunity to take over. It was recommended to us by a few different friends. It was our first time. We called for same day reservations from near by on a Tuesday at 5:00 PM. We arrived and there was lots of Parking. We bought Sake and Beer from Times right there. We entered through the small doorway behind the red curtain and were surprised to see it wasn't as small as we expected. We got seated immediately. Chef works alone and calls help in if there are large parties. Our Omakase experience was AMAZING! We sat on the sushi bar for 3 hours eating, drinking, catching up and celebrating a birthday. Everything was fresh and tasty. We all left there full and very satisfied. There are about 8 seats on the Sushi Bar that can be made into 10 seats. It was nice and comfortable. Besides that there are a few 4 and 6 seat tables. The ceiling is high so you don't feel cloister phobic like some places. Arigato Chef Eiichi and Izumi. We will be back again soon! FYI the restroom is up the stairs on the 2nd level.

Been here a few times and always great and good value including BYOB. This time again it did not disappoint. Eeichi San and his wife run this little sushi restaurant tucked away on the side parking lot of the Times shopping center. They are very nice, accommodating and gracious hosts. With all the omakase places that have opened in the past few years its sometimes hard to make a choice of where to go. If you find yourself in this situation, call Sushi You to make a reservation. Probably the best Omakase in this price range and you wont leave hungry. We had 13 great courses including the final Nigiri course with 6 pieces of Nigiri. Started with a nice simple salad with Goma dressing to start the night. Next came a seasonal favorite Hotaru Ika (firefly squid), nicely cooked with seaweed and miso dressing. Alongside came a nice mound of negitoro with hints of sesame and soy. It just melts in your mouth and paired great with our Sake. Next course was some Unagi with Avocado and caviar, the sauce was nicely balanced reduction, not too sweet but deep in flavor. Steamed clams came next with a nice light broth. Our next course was large tako slices with some salt and miso. It was very delicate and tender. The tataki paired well with the onions, lime and sesame seeds. The next course surprised me, Chawanmushi is one of my favorites but I dont order it often since it takes a long time to prepare. The dashi and egg was so delicate with pieces of Shitake . Each bite was like heaven. Next came the Sashimi platter with a nice assortment of items nicely presented. Next up was the miso butterfish with a small serving of japanese potato salad and Hasu. The butterfish was light and full of flavor. I could have had this with a bowl of rice and woudl have been satisfied. I thought our next course of the miso soup with the amaebi head was the last course, but I was wrong. The soup had a nice deep flavor and set me up for the final course. The final course came and we were all pretty full by then. 6 pieces of nigiri including chu toro, smoked salmon, amaebi, Uni/ikura and Anago. Our friends couldn't finish this last course but took the rest home to enjoy the next day. All this for only $110 per person puts this place at the top of any omakase place in town. Paired with great service and gracious hosts, this is a must for your next Sushi outing.

In summary, you can't beat this price point for the quality and variety of dishes here for the omakase. Parking: Plenty. Shares a lot with Times so no problemo there. Ambiance: Super homey, quaint, and cozy. Not fancy (which I love) and a very comfortable vibe. Service: Depending on how busy it gets, you may or may not have trouble flagging down the server. Despite this, you'll be fine. All your dishes come out in a timely manner, and it's BYOB so you're serving our own alcohol anyway. Plus, the water and teas are self-service (if you want it for free), so really, all's good. I actually liked that I could get up and get more water whenever I needed it, instead of waiting for someone. So, it's a great combination of service and convenience for me. If you're used to the server getting everything for you, then you might be a little put off. Just keep an open mind. P.S. The owner did check on us periodically throughout the meal to make sure things were delicious and that we were full at the end. Yes, our bellies were FULL. :) Food: Amazing. Absolutely no complaints. All the fish was fresh and of high quality. The variety of dishes that came out, one the other, exceeded my expectations. I tried to take a photo of everything that came out, so check them out to see if you like what you see. One of my favorites was the 4-piece sushi, that came out about midway through. The toro was melt-in-your-mouth good, and the fish to rice ration was PERFECT. There was also a white fish in that dish that I did not know what it was but it, along with the sauce on top, was amazing. Another one of my favorites was the cooked salmon cheek (collar?) that came out with the most delicious potato salad, lotus roots, and seasoned green beans. Anywho, you get my drift. Everything was superb. Verdict: Must go for the omakase. Make a reservation early on so you don't miss out on this experience.

$100 omakase takeaway (you get BOTH platters)
    Rod U.

Note: This is a takeaway review. The restaurant has reopened for omakase only dine in. Reservations required. Don't get fresh with me! *Slap*. When it comes to sushi, what is fresh? Shellfish, bivalves, crustaceans (scallops, clams, shrimp, lobsters...); ZERO hours AKA live or cooked live. Why? They contain parasites that produce toxins once dead and the flesh rapidly degrades. Fish, cleaned and gutted; one to ten days. Why? The flavor needs to develop and the texture firms up from aging. Ever had sashimi from a fish just caught? Mushy, pasty and taste like ocean water. Maybe it's the COVID times we're in but Sushi You is not aging their fish. No special treatment (wrapped in konbu, blow torched), glazed by aged soy or topped by condiments resulting in fish with little flavor. So why the high rating? 1. Benefit of a doubt. There is huge potential. Japanese short grain rice, seasoned with restraint. Hint of salt, not excessively sweet or wet. Quality seafood sliced well and in the proper ratio of fish to rice. (Think Gaku and Sasabune size one biters). Botan ebi and saba battera standouts. 2. Japanese sensibility. Subtle and pleasing flavors in the rolls. Charred salmon skin with a vinegary kick, anago brushed with the lightest eel sauce, the dashimaki tamago has gentle sweetness but packs umami charged dashi flavor that almost drips from the egg. 3. Value. $100 for a huge omakase platter that easily feeds four. Individual omakase $30pp. Ala carte $3 - $6.50 (otoro, uni) per piece. Very friendly service from the owner himself. Order promptly made right before pickup. All COVID health and safety precautions taken and executed well. Maybe an off day but even if not, quality and value for the money, it stands far above most.

I was able to experiment with different flavors with the Old Bay seasoning, garlic mayo, lemon, and butter. The garlic mayo was surprisingly good with the lobster. You can also throw the Old Bay seasoning on the chips if you're in the mood. The price is pretty steep which was my mistake. I don't know what I was expecting when ordering lobster in Waikiki. The lady at the cash register was less than pleasant and helpful so it makes spending that money feel a little more painful. If you can afford it and are really craving a lobster roll, this should satiate you. I didn't feel like I needed more to eat after finishing my meal. Location: The store is located in the Royal Hawaiian shopping center. You have to take a staircase from the first floor to a lower floor to get to it. You may need to ask around for directions. The restaurant is super small. Maybe two or 3 small tables that can fit no more than 6-8 people.
