    Grilled mushroom - avoid!
    Veronica V.

This is a tardy review from April 2024, so may no longer be applicable. We come here every trip, and in our experience, you need to be careful what you order as the quality varies considerably. Over several visits, we have determined that it's best to avoid most cooked foods from the kitchen as well as the sushi rolls, as they are often very disappointing. However, if you stick to sashimi, nigiri sushi and some of the traditional Japanese raw dishes, you will have much better luck. This visit we had: the grilled mushrooms - these are oddly dried out, yet watery white mushrooms that have a perfunctory brief char on a grill, with some cold sauce on top. Best avoided. Grilled Cocktail wieners - my husband, who did not grow up in Japan, inexplicably ordered this. I grew up in Japan, and have fond memories of these from my childhood, but know I wouldn't like these now. Yeah, he totally regretted his order, lol. Chawan mushi - this was actually ok, but not anything special Sushi rolls - this trip, we limited ourselves to just the umeshisho maki as we have found on previous visits that their rolled sushi isn't that great. The umeshisho maki had an enormous amount of rice, was sloppily made, and overall, was a big disappointment, as I love this dish. Nigiri sushi - the fish we got over several visits this trip were all excellent! We sat at the bar, so the chef gave us a few freebies because we had come so often, lol. Deluxe sashimi platter - I have no idea what happened to my photo, but it was impressive looking and the fish was fabulous Maguro with yamakake - this varies wildly. Sometimes, it's fresh and delicious, other times it tastes like it was made yesterday, sat in the fridge overnight, and they're just trying to get rid of it. I got both on this trip. The service is always friendly and welcoming. They really seemed thankful that we came so often. It gets pretty busy, so make reservations unless you go early when they just open. Normally I would rate a place like this 2-3 stars, but as I said, if you stick to what they do best, the food is pretty good value. At least it was,as of April 2024.

I wish we had taken more photos! Went with some friends because it is a longstanding favorite of theirs. We had the cucumbers with ume sauce, unagi don, unagi risotto, rock n roll, spider roll, stuffed mushrooms, and enoki chips. Definite favorites were unagi don and enoki chips, so ono! It was fairly busy for a Friday night and service was decent. Aunties were so nice at da end and helpful getting us everything we needed.

Did a review two years ago and everything was pretty consistent. Food was good and sushi was fresh. We were placed in the corner near closing time so I was staring at old shelves the entire time. The service was friendly but we had to keep calling them over for refills on water and other stuff. I still like coming here and will dine here when in the area.

One of the best dinner I've had since I been here. Fresh fish. Tasty green salad. Intense flavor of oyster shots. Expensive sushi comparing to sushi in mainland. But the quality of fresh fish is unbeatable. 3 stars because it took a very long time for our food to come out. We had our salad. Waited an additional 30 minutes for Toku Joe. Then additional 15 minutes for our oyster shots. We decided to order an extra order of uni. But ended up canceling after 30 minutes of waiting. The uni was ready. The server forgotten to bring it out. Only remember because we asked for it. We left the restaurant feeling more hungrier than we got there because there was a long wait between the dishes. My advice is to order everything at once. And if you wait too long, chase down a server to remind them of your food.

I convinced Son and Dot, who love Japanese food, to try a new place for their birthday celebration this year. Half the people in our little 6-person party thought it was great! The other half said... meh. It was surprisingly not busy (I originally wrote empty, but there were three other groups there) for a 6:30p on a Saturday night. That kind of speaks volumes. But as I said, half our party enjoyed their meal. Let's start with the positive: They brought some complimentary smoked ahi "chips" - dollops of smoked ahi on tempura nori. It was... interesting. I loved the crispy tempura nori and the smoked fish had just the right amount of smokiness. Dot ordered the ahi tempura poke. She LOVED how unique this dish is, and she said it was delicious. It was certainly pretty. Son devoured the maguro sashimi so fast, I couldn't even try to take a pic. I've never seen $22.50 disappear so fast! He said the fish was super fresh. He also ordered the Rainbow roll and though he said it was good it wasn't as good as other places. Hubs tried the GyuYaki, which he described as tender and well cooked. He also got the dragon roll and spicy tuna futsumaki and said both were really good. The shrimp head-on the dragon roll was "a nice touch but added no value" since he's not a shrimp head fan. lol Big Bro got the waft salad, maki nasa and garlic spicy tuna roll (which was pretty). He didn't comment much but did clear his plates. Grams got two orders of the California maki, and she also cleared her plate but didn't comment about it. As for me, I tried the sake musubi maki (grilled musubi with salmon inside). I'd never tried grilled rice and though it was fine, it kind of stuck to my teeth a little. The salmon was also really salty but since there was only a tiny bit of it inside the musubi, it turned out fine. Nothing I would order again, though. I also ordered the Kimberly roll, which is described as a "Shrimp tempura roll with avocado on top." Yes, it had shrimp tempura, but it was kind of flavorless. Avocado on top was super plentiful and perfectly ripe. I just wish I had known there was going to be radish sprouts and sliced onion in the roll too. The only other things worth noting: edamame appetizer was only $1 unlike all the other places that feel the need to charge $5+ which could basically buy you a whole bag of edamame. It was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Last but not least was dessert, which is Gram's favorite part of every meal. It was limited to two options: mochi ice cream or black sesame gelato. Gram, Hubs and Dot ordered the mochi ice cream, choosing between the only two flavors available: vanilla or chocolate. They were pretty much like the ones you can buy from the grocery store. Oh yeah: service. Very pleasant, but a bit slow. We were there for nearly 2 hours. Multiple water refills, but no hot tea refills. To be fair, tea was complimentary. Or at least, we didn't get charged for it. So all in all, it was worth trying something new (for us, since this place has been around for a while) but we'll probably stick with our other faves for the next special occasion.

Sad to see how much this place has fallen since years after our first visit. We had such a good time a year or so ago on our visit here- and it used to be such a solid popular sushi spot. Now- the quality has gone down so much. I'm pretty sure they are just using old fish. If you look at the photos of my nigiri- the scallop/ hotate just doesn't look right. It seems like they tried to sear it or something to mask the old fish, but it was just bad. Amaebi had no sweet flavor, and the salmon was inedible and we had to send it back. Roll was ok but a slightly fishy taste from the spicy tuna. The only thing decent here was the chicken karage and the kushi yakis - but some of them were too over seasoned/ salty. I'm sad how much this place's quality has gone down. The service was good but probably won't be returning.

Continuing on my search for the best nabeyaki udon, I stumbled upon Tokkuri-Tei. One look at the Yelp reviews told me that they are not known for that. Seems that sushi and izakaya are their sweet spot. I figured if I had room for sushi after eating my nabeyaki then I'd order a roll, but sadly that didn't happen because I was too full! They're located in the Hee Hing Plaza on the 2nd floor next to Tonkatsu Tamafuji. Parking is underground - just pay $3 to the parking lot attendant, or you can find metered parking on the street if you're lucky. I arrived when they opened at 5pm and was surprised how large the interior was. There are lots of 2 and 4 tops, plus longer tables for large parties and even a sushi bar! Tables are close together and you can hear full on conversations. I didn't have reservations but I also didn't need it. By the time I left, the restaurant was only 1/4 full on a Tuesday night. Service was friendly and attentive. Their menu is 8 pages long and includes just about every Japanese dish under the sun. I ordered the nabeyaki udon for $15 and a draft beer for $5. Finally, a nabeyaki udon at a reasonable price of $15 instead of $20! You know what they say though... be careful what you wish for. The nabeyaki was just average overall. With other nabeyaki that I've had, there are so many goodies that you can't even see the noods. This was the opposite- plenty of noods and little goodies inside the hot pot - just a few small pieces of chicken, mushroom, a little cabbage, egg and 1 shrimp tempura. The broth was thin and lacked flavor. The udon appeared to be the packaged kind. So perhaps that's why they price the nabeyaki at $15? Despite the average nabeyaki, I would definitely return to try their sushi and izakaya and hopefully increase the rating.

Best dinner of my week long vacation! My friends are locals here and wanted to take us to one of their favorite spots for dinner...Here we were, at Tokkuri-Tei! They ordered their favorites for our table to share and I can't even remember the names of each dish, but everything was spectacular! My favorite was a fried tofu dish with mushrooms and a sauce that was to die for! Great atmosphere and local vibe; I'll definitely come here again on my next visit!

Tokuri-Tei from it's humble beginnings as a food truck to dine in restaurant. When they began Kazu (Sushi Chef) and Santa (Chef de Cuisine) were partners that built their business from the ground up. A Sushi Bar Izakaya (like a Tapa or a Pupu size dishes). The food is fresh and delicious. Service is friendly, fast, and efficient. The menu is quite extensive and will satisfy any need and whim. Whether you're sitting in the dining room or at the Sushi bar you can rest assured you'll be eating some of the best foods on the island. The Risotto's are contest winners (Rice Competition Waikiki. Santa entered 3 times and won First place all 3 times, after his 3rd win the organizers made him a judge instead of letting him compete). All 3 of those Risotto's are still on the menu. Reservations are recommended but not required. Kazu and his highly trained staff will not disappoint.

    Baked Alaskan roll!
    Kira D.

For all the sushi places I've tried so far, this is my least favorite. Simple mediocre sushi rolls without much flavor and sophistication. We ordered one of our rolls without tempura since my husband is gluten free and we didn't realize that another roll we ordered had tempura as it did not indicate that tempura was in the roll, but our server failed to inform us that the baked Alaskan roll also came with tempura. It would've been nice for our server to give us a heads up and be proactive in ensuring that we didn't end up with any tempura in our rolls. Their gluten free menu is also not user friendly. It lists a lot of vegan rolls as well as gluten products in a roll but vegan doesn't always=gf, so it was really difficult to follow. U literally had to go through the entire menu to weed out a few gf rolls. Strange... Service was not great and our rolls were disappointing so won't be coming back here when I visit again!

Located on the ground floor of the Romer House hotel, which itself had been recently gutted and remodeled in recent years, along Nāhua Street, 855 Aloha proudly establishes itself as a restaurant that has its roots engrained with a sense of nostalgia from a time when things moved a little slower, even in Hawai'i where things have always moved a little slower, so diners can gather, stay a little longer, which upon my visit I happily did so. Named for Hawaii's once-ubiquitous payphone number, 855 Aloha is a celebration of local history and a bit of an homage to the humble payphone, where a handful of change could connect people back to the mainland. What brought me here was the fact that on a previous journey to the Hawaiian islands, I stayed at the Romer House and thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the hotel, but never got around to visiting their main restaurant on the ground floor lobby. Upon a recent visit to Waikīkī, with the rain coming down in droves, I made it my mission to finally make it one of Waikīkī's most intriguing restaurants. Not having reservations for 855 Aloha was not a problem, as I made sure to call in advance and they said they were taking walk-ins this evening. Being sat in one of their large booths made me appreciate solo dining, and take in the ambiance of a dimly lit dining room. Beyond the cocktail and beverage section of the menu, the dinner menu at 855 Aloha is separated into categories including Sushi Rolls, otherwise known as Roll Call; Salads, otherwise known as Fresh Talk; Shareable Pupus and Appetizers, otherwise known as Party Line; Large Plates, otherwise known as Main Line; Sides, otherwise known as What's Your Extension; and Desserts, otherwise known as Sweet Talk. To start my meal I ordered their Hello Goodbye cocktail which featured Tequila Blanco, Mezcal, Housemade Ginger Syrup, Honey and Lemon. A sultry cocktail that was deep in texture and flavor, this was a nice start to my meal. To eat with my cocktail, I ordered their Cali Roll which was filled with Snow Crab, Avocado, Cucumber and Sesame. This was your traditional sushi roll elevated in an only-in-Hawaii sense of mind. Since I was famished for food, I knew I wanted something hearty, and their Chinatown Chili Crisp Chicken which was served with Gai Lan vegetables, as well as Charred Lemon, and topped with Cilantro. To pair with my entrée, I ordered their Furikake Rice. As I sipped on my cocktail I enjoyed my Cali Roll piece by piece and knew that the food at 855 Aloha was truly elevated and I knew for the rest of my evening I was in for a real treat. My chicken entrée and bowl of steamed rice topped with furikake seaweed and sesame seeds would come out next and I would not be disappointed as it was juicy and flavorful with every bite. The chicken entrée was not the largest dish so sharing this one entrée seems doubtful the side of steamed rice definitely fills up any diner. I didn't think I had any room for dessert but changed my mind when I reviewed their menu, and their Chocolate Haupia Pie topped with Toasted Coconut and Whipped Cream was simply too good to ignore. My total bill for this visit to 855 Aloha was $90.06 that included tax and was before grtuity was added in, which was higher than most, but well worth the price tag. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to 855 Aloha, as it represented the true diverse cultures of Hawaii, thanks to the energy and kindness of the Japanese hospitality that this restaurant represents. Seeing my fellow diners, both large parties and couples enjoy themselves, in such a place where people were clearly bonding over their meal and drinks in such a laid back yet still dynamic social environment was a real treat. "I got it, I got it, I got it...for a good time, for a good time call...855 Aloha!

As it was my first night in Hawaii and we didn't have dinner yet, sure why not try it? While waiting to be seated, I had asked the staff at 855 Aloha if the 15% discount would apply for guests at the hotel, and quite oddly, she said she didn't know. Upon being seated, I asked our server and strangely, she also didn't know and said she would ask someone. Sort of made me confused and gaslighted that I'm being told two different things. As it's our first time dining at 855 Ahola, we tried a few entrees and I would say that it's flavorful and delicious; much better than I would have expected. $12 for sparkling water, a little pricier but the food was good. I did enjoy my late meal / dinner. My only complaint would be that when the bill arrived, no discount was applied. I had told three servers that I was a guest at the hotel, had my key card and ID as well. The server came back and she applied 10% off. At that point, I just paid for the bill and left a 20% tip for gratuity. Being in Hawaii, especially after a long flight and it being our first meal which happens to be very late and it's dinner, would have liked for the hotel to have just honored the 15% discount without having to ask about it so many times. 15% discount won't break my wallet but it's more about the principle and fairness -- it is actually listed on the website as well. It made me feel like 855 Aloha wasn't very honest. The food itself was good but I would probably just skip this one next time.

We ordered a bit too much food and spent a little under $200 for two people after tax and tip. Some dishes we ordered: 1. Spicy tuna and salmon with garlic roll ($26.50) - massive roll and quite heavy...this was the last dish to come out and we were STUFFED by then. It's good, but I would have preferred to start the meal with this roll, not end with it. 2. Atsuage natto ($9.50) - ordered to hit my protein macros. It's literally fried tofu topped with a generous serving of natto. 3. Eggplant in dashi sauce ($6.50) - light appetizer, and seemed fairly healthy. 4. Miso chilean sea bass ($30) - very flaky and fresh. I was already getting full by this point after our apps and nigiri came out. 5. The nigiri and rolls were all fresh and ranged in pricing. We each got 3 pieces of nigiri and split a couple small rolls in addition to the aforementioned spicy tuna and salmon. Service was decent. We sat at the counter and the chefs were all very nice.

Best service, even when we showed up right before last call. Thank you!…read more Most places don't look too happy when you walk in right before last call. We are always looking for a quick night cap after UH games and Bozu has both good drinks and quality sushi and sashimi.
