I called before hand because another place up the street did not answer my call when I had to check which restaurants are open now because of COVID. Some restaurant hours on Yelp are not updated. That restaurant seemed to be open when I parked close by but too bad they lost business from me. I also called Pho 97 before coming. The lady that answered was very pleasant and spoke perfect English. No offense. She also served us. She was nice. It's a pity there were not too many customers but atleast they did have a couple groups despite the times. Must mean they are popular! They had seated us with vacant tables between the groups so it felt very safe. Also was very clean. Haven't been here for a few years and it had changed ownership. Ordered: Large pho Medium pho Vietnamese crepe Pho - noodles were softer and had less bounce. It may have been overcooked or perhaps a different brand of noodles were used. Tendon was soft, broth was decent. Crepe - my family member ordered this and I had a bite. It was nice and crispy. There were 3 decent sized shrimp and sliced pork belly. I hardly order this so I'm not sure what the meat to vegetable ratio is. From my perspective, seemed like there were a lot of sprouts inside. I had some food leftover and asked for 2 small containers, one for the pho and one for leftover veggies. Employee said ok when I asked. When she returned with the containers she said it's an extra dollar. I understand why but it's a little annoying to pay extra. It's a tad unusual. I initially was headed to another pho place nearby but a homeless person was laying on the sidewalk so I just settled on Pho 97. I should have just continued walking. At the other place, I planned on ordering cold noodles with bbq beef. I was disappointed that Pho 97 didn't have bbq beef, so I ended up ordering spring rolls with cold noodles instead. I've tried pho from many different places, but this place was recommended to me by a Vietnamese friend, so I already know it's going to be good if he recommends it. This is a small restaurant in Chinatown, so I usually take someone with me so they can dash in to pick up our order so I don't have to park on the street (there is a municipal lot right next door though, if you want to eat in). I love the pho broth here, just the right amount of spices and a hearty beefy flavor. Our usual order is beef brisket pho with raw slices of beef that cooks in the broth, and the summer rolls. Shrimp summer rolls are the perfect light appetizer to get your tummy ready for the hot, beefy pho. The service here is very prompt and friendly, and after we picked up our order and drove home, the broth was still hot enough to cook the beef. I'm trying my best to support locally owned businesses, so even though there are several good pho places closer to home, I go there for take out when that pho craving hits me. The China town district is extremely seedy and nasty, reminds me of San Francisco's Tenderloin District. But one thing I can say, it has a fantastic pho restaurant. This place is a little hole in the wall Vietnamese pho shop that is very clean and offers great pho. I had the beef stew which was not spicy, very flavorful and a large portion for about $13.00, It was served with the usual sprouts, mint leaves and jalapeno pepper. Along with the pho I ordered a side of Vietnamese egg rolls and a lemonade. The food here is fresh and tasty. The service was good and the food is great. A victim of new management taking over a failing restaurant, turning it around, but because they kept the name of the old, failing restaurant they still suffer from the poor reviews of the previous restaurant that they since turned around. Sure... it's located in the arm pit of downtown (Maunakea Street) and their decor is far from fine dining, but a 3.5 overall Yelp rating - ain't NO Way! The food at Pho 97 is LEGIT: authentically prepared dishes, deep complex flavors, beautifully presented with thoughtful service. Full disclaimer, I am biased. Although I don't know the owners or staff, I LOVE Vietnamese food, it's one of my all-time favorite cuisines. The blend of sweet, salty, spicy, sour flavors, attention to textures, colors and fresh ingredients. The cuisine is actually very complex and sophisticated, yet in my mind so under-appreciated. Probably because and thankfully so - their price point is lower than most cuisines. Who can say no to pho?! My family and I went to this pho restaurant, recommended by my brother. It is located in Chinatown where the Maunakea Market Place is. We came around 7:30ish on a weekday, it wasn't packed. I was starving so I order myself a small combination pho. My family also got pho, a rice plate, and a vermicelli plate. My pho had all the meat cooked inside and included bean sprout and basil. Soup base was pretty tasty, not too salty or too oily. There was decent amount of portion and the price was decent. Nowadays, pho can be expensive for small portion. But what you get in Chinatown area is probably cheaper and decent amount. It's not a bad place. It's a small shop but quite clean. Why does he like to go there all the time? Because he wants to eat their Catfish soup. He really likes the vietnamese style catfish soup. It's generally a sweet and sour type of soup. There's okra, pineapple, catfish slices, etc. The pineapple really contributes to the sweetness. I can eat so much rice when I put the soup on it! There are lots of ingredients in the bowl. Personally, I would order this dish too, but I don't want to deal with catfish bones. Dad always gets to take the leftover home and a couple more meals with it. I always order the spicy beef noodle soup, I love that stuff. Everytime we come here, I'll want to try something else but always end up getting the same thing. I love that there's a variety of meats, ham hock, brisket, pork blood. Give me more! Last time my brother and I ordered this, we finished it, no problem! It's got a little bit of heat but not burn-your-mouth heat. You could always add sriracha if you really want more heat. That's how you know a restaurant is good, when you finish everything in the bowl! Also, when we come in the evenings, it's not totally crowded, so we kinda get the place to ourselves with a few other people and we can just hang out and take our time. As a regular to Chinatown I've passed this restaurant many, many times. This is one of those Pho restaurants with numbers in the name. Was this created in 1997 for it to be Pho 97? I glanced at the reviews and found one dating back 2007. The mystery... This place wasn't our first choice. Our go-to place was closed. None of us 3 ever are here and we were curious to try. It was a late afternoon. This small restaurant had 2 other tables dining and I was looking forward to a great meal with friends but sadly the food didn't deliver. Just like the decor, the food tasted like when Pho was introduced to me back in the early 80's - - very unique in the usage of raw herbs and vegetables (not common in the Chinese cuisine). I decided to order Seafood Gruel (rice soup), or known as "Chau" in Vietnamese. I accidentally said "jook" and the waitress glared at me. Oops... This was my first time ever to have Chau and it was different from what I'm used to eating. It was very soupy with some visible rice grains here and there. The base was very bland. I tried the fish tofu, shrimp and squid and they were also on the bland side. I then added some fresh basil and culantro from my friends who both ordered Pho. It did give some flavor but still monotone in my palate so I added a spoonful of house made satay sauce that turned my bowl orange color! Finally it was satisfactory for me but by this time the Chau was tepid. Wasted 10 dollars on this. A shared a banh mi sandwich with my friend and it was also disappointing. DRY DRY DRY. No mayo no sauce no oil nor seasoning so I also added some satay sauce. Wasted another 7 dollars on this. On the good side the service was decent, contrary to the handful of reviews here stating bad service. Also, it was nice to see culantro in the veggie condiments when ordering Pho. We also found fermented shrimp sauce, a rarity. As foodies we all agreed that the food here was what it was like when Vietnamese food was first introduced to us. That first experience where it's new to you and don't know better. However, we've become "spoiled" as our palates are now sophisticated. Pricing at Pho 97 is on the low-side. We are in the middle of Honolulu's Chinatown for the first time ever, passing one restaurant after another, each dark and dingy with dirty windows wondering where to go? Pho 97 pops up. If the readers of TripAdvisor rated it highly then it is good enough for me!. We look inside on this Saturday lunch time, and see that the place is packed -with Asians talking Vietnamese. A good sign, as the locals would definitely know a good place when they see one. Air conditioned and clean but noisy with locals and their families chattering in Vietnamese on this 82 degree day in mid January. We get a large table with 6 seats, and are directed to sit on the end, with menus handed to us. On the end of the table a solitary lady orders pho, which comes in a container large enough to fit over her head in the rice paddies of the motherland.. The waitress sizes us up and asks in a heavy Vietnamese accent "Would you like drink?", with a smile on her face. Better than the proprietor who is standing around surveying the place with a traditional stoic Oriental look. Nothing rude, just going about doing his job with a minimum of fan fare. The wife orders a Papaya salad, and I get the Beef with broccoli rice dish. What, you go into a pho place and don't order pho!? What kind of a pho are you? Service is very prompt, and the dishes arrive in minutes. The wife's papaya salad comes first, and I put a small portion on my side plate. Mixed greens with slivers of papaya on a bed of raw bean sprouts, with some powdered nuts sprinkled on top. Half a dozen pieces of shrimp cut lengthwise, with a few pieces of sliced beef together with sliced carrots and some sliced white vegetable that I don't recognize. Delicious with the light vinaigrette like dressing. My dish arrives a few minutes later. It comes in a bowl of broth, with slices of beef amid tons of vegetables, including broccoli, bean sprouts, peas, pea snaps. I scarf up the soup without slurping, although I doubt if I could hear my neighbors slurping, amid the loud chatter. I finish off the vegetables, and dump the side dish of rice into the soup bowl to mix with the beef broth and beef slices. Among the best beef broccoli dishes I've ever tasted, and my stomach gives a loud burp at the end of lunch, exclaiming its approval. I go pay with credit card, but always carry a good amount of cash, just in case they don't take credit cards. Never used the bathroom, and never saw any roaches or rodents moving around. You walk in and just sit yourself.. well that's what I usually do haha. They are located on Maunkea street right by the entrance of maunakea market place. This is the second time I have eaten at Pho 97 and noticed a difference in the chef's preparation of the meal. The Ban Xeo was excellent with the meat cut thin and tender. Food is not heavily salted or perked up with MSG. The best is their new toilet is so clean and brand new, I use to hate going through my he kitchen with card board on the floor at the old place. They keep their kitchen clear and neat. The owner is very pleasant and speaks well always wanting to know how things are. read more

I've always eaten phó here with my family growing up. I did notice the restaurant looks a lot different and there's a new owner now. Overall, I still enjoy the food here. We had heard about Pho 98 from a friend who has been there prior. We planned to eat there during our visit to Chinatown. The place was easy to find, near the public parking garage. The place was neat and clean, great menu. Of course we got Pho (6 of us), it was amazing. The staff were very efficient and kind. highly recommend this place if you are in Honolulu. read more
