You have a choice of egg or rice noodles, I got the latter. Bò Kho with vermicelli. The beef broth was sweet with plenty of onions. Dish came with the typical accoutrements one would get with Pho - the Hoisin was mixed with chili oil. The broth was good and the chunks of chuck roast were tender and with carrots...kinda looked like local style beef stew...sorta. Also, got an Iced Vietnamese Coffee. Strong and sweet as one comes to expect. Robusta coffee is SE Asian coffee is definitely underrated. Hours are 1000a to 1000p daily, except Sundays, when they're closed. I got the lemongrass beef sandwich which was really good! It lives up to its name. The lemongrass came thru nicely, i appreciated the bold flavor. It's also fairly filling too. I LOVE VIET CHUBBY BOY! My coworkers and I bring up ordering from them at least once a week. We all know what we want and it's the pho french dip sandwich! If there's anything you have to try it's this specific sandwich. It's so flavorful and delish! The meat is tender and packed with seasoning. And I like how the bean sprouts were cooked since it gets rid of the bitter taste the fresh ones add. They're super easy to order with over the phone and to pick up. I think they actually know who I am... since they start ringing me up when I walk in?? Not only did I verbatim say "this is the best Vietnamese food I've ever had" out loud, but when we came back the next week, Han, our server, remembered us and gave us big hugs and wanted to know our names. I've been wanting to try Viet Chubby Boy for about 2 years now. They are located in the same lot as Gueib Cafe, Sakana Grill & Upscale Hawai'i. Parking is tight but if you come during off hours, there are lots of open stalls. Recently Yelp GF told me that he tried their French Dip (Banh Mi) and said it was amazing. It was the nudge I needed to finally go down and give them a try. I decided to order their French Dip to go. Since I was in a rush, I called my order in and it only took them about 15-20 minutes to get my order ready. Customer service was friendly and the place was pretty busy with people waiting for their take out orders. The drive home was fragrant and got me excited for my first bite. I thought the sandwich would have more roasted beef brisket but it was mostly bean sprouts. When I could taste the brisket, it was good but almost every bite tasted only like bean sprouts. I used up the container of their saute sauce in a few bites to try drown out the dominant bean sprout taste. Their saute sauce was quite tasty. Good thing I have a lot of saute sauce at home so I could finish the banh mi. Their broth is on the sweeter side and I liked that they have a lot of sliced onion in it. But its missing the essence of the spices, like the cinnamon, star anise, cloves, coriander seeds, cardamom and fennel. Also the smokiness of the onions and ginger. I just prefer my pho broth to be heavier on the spices. But I still enjoyed it. The rice noodles was perfect, and the meat toppings is a little on the stingy side. Also only one size bowl. I also tried the Summer Rolls with BBQ Pork. It was just average to me. Service was good, attentive and refilled my water when needed. Came to check on me a couple of time. We also had the fried spring rolls vermicelli. The spring rolls were light and crispy with a good amount of filling. The vermicelli cooked well, not overcooked, and came with a their house fish sauce, very flavorful. The prices are also competitive and you definitely get your money's worth. I've had this place bookmarked on Yelp for a while, and I'm so glad we finally got to visit! For appetizers, we tried the Vietnamese fried corn style. It was sweet and the savory flavor from the shrimp paste or sauce was so good. We also got the bomb tofu,it's also surprisingly good. For our mains, we ordered the stir-fried egg noodles with seafood and the Pho French Dip. I really enjoyed the Pho French Dip. It has roasted beef brisket with avocado sauce, thai basil, bean sprout, onion, cilantro in a Viatnamese baguette. It's oily but the flavor is well-balanced and so good when I dipped it in their house pho broth. Actually, both the stir-fried egg noodles and pho french dip were already tasty on their own, but when the staff offered chili oil, it completely elevated the flavors. It was so good that I asked if they sold it, and they do! The staff told us they make it fresh with lemongrass and chili, and they even bottled one for us. This place is on our list of "what are eating tonight" weeknights that we are too lazy to cook. We love the pho broth here because it's slightly more cloudy and full of flavor. One of my GoTo favorites is the vermicelli with spring rolls and pork because the portion is huge and the pork is melt in your mouth. The service is also so so friendly. Sometime we each order take out from this place when we're being lazy lazy. They have a few quirky off the usual Vietnamese food menu like the cheese omelette that has a mayonnaise drizzle. Our server, who also is the owner and chef, Kevin, graciously explained that this was his nickname given to him by his wife when he was 50 lbs heavier. So, at 50 lbs lighter now, you won't find him chubby anymore. Love the restaurant's logo of Kevin's caricature profile on the staff t-shirts, caps, cover menu, and building front. Originally from Vietnam, Kevin started cooking when he was enrolled in the culinary programs at Leeward and Kapiolani community colleges. This brought back memories when he was younger, and he learned to combine them with the local Japanese and Korean accents. He then opened his restaurant in the former Old Saimin House in the Kapalama Shopping Plaza in July 2022. Viet Chubby Boy is a casual, hole-in-the-wall restaurant offers authentic, as well as creative Vietnamese comfort dishes using Korean (e.g., kim chee) and Japanese accents (e.g., cheese omelette topped with mayo and an okonomiyaki-style sauce) to accommodate local residents familiar to Asian multi-ethnic tastes. I order this at every Vietnamese joint we go to. The broth was to die for. BUT, the beef was not super tender as beef stew meat is supposed to be. However, I will still get it next time. The parking is plentiful for a late night meal and it was surprisingly busy for being after 9pm on a weekday. I guess only a few places are open late. The food is good, but it wasn't the best Vietnamese food I've had. I enjoyed the appetizers and appreciated the fact that they offer things sometimes not offered at other restaurants. I think I've had better summer rolls and pho at other places, but given the fact that this place is open late, I think I'd still be back to try other things on the menu and my husband liked his bunmee bowl. I like that they offer sandwiches in addition to their entrees and appetizers. They also have a yuzu ice cream on the menu that I want to try. The service was good. This is my boyfriend and I's go to pho spot! The service here is always phenomenal. It always seems to be the same guy (that wears glasses) working and he's always so sweet and attentive. Our go to order is the beef combination pho which has a really clean and clear broth. I also enjoy their shaking beef and love that they also offer crinkle fries because you can also do a side order of fries. And soup with a side of fries is a combo that I personally love! The beef stew and bahn mis are also really good. But the fried chicken is a whole other thing you have to try as an appetizer or get even as a rice plate! First time there. We were looking for a place that would allow us to bring in our own drinks, and they accommodated us. We had their Chubby Wings as an appetizer. So crispy and flavorful. Then my friends chose the vermicelli with pork and spring rolls. I had one of the spring rolls (yum) and a bite of her dish. And, yes. Yummy. I had their beef combo pho. So good. The broth was light and full all at once. I ate it up and was incredibly satisfied. The place was bright and clean. They didn't have many customers at 5pm on a Saturday. And they were very attentive to our needs. So happy we chose this place. Am looking forward to returning with my family. I think they will appreciate it too. read more
