    Calamari
    Larene U.

Food was EXCELLENT. That calamari was one of the best I have ever had. It was crisp but not to the point where it hurt the inner of my mouth - super soft and tender. The cucumber was also perfect and it's amazing how everything was so crisp on the outside yet soft on the inside! The crab pasta was a standout. The flavors just melded together perfectly with the soft shell crab being an amazing garnish to the dish. It was tender and crisp. You can just eat it as is with the pasta and it just was absolutely delicious. They give you an option if you want some blue crab garnish on the pasta - make sure to say yes. The crab adds such a nice kick to the creaminess of the pasta. Did I also mention how big the portion was!? You could probably order the crab pasta and another entree to share with friends. Dessert was unique. The flan was rich and the lychee was a delicious side. The popcorn ice cream was very different than what I'm used to. The ice cream has a very grainy texture with the accents of popcorn. The butter mochi was standard but a good additional texture for the popcorn ice cream. Not too sure if I would order that again, but the flan was definitely my favorite dessert of the meal. Ambiance is a darker mood with dim lighting. It adds to the luxurious vibe of the restaurant itself. I noticed people came dressed up for their reservations as they walked in. Definitely a great spot to go with friends/family. Service was quick and helpful - very attentive with filling up our waters and making sure we were ok. Definitely a standout restaurant. I'm a fan!

Ever since this place opened, my wife and I have been back numerous times! Very lovely set up inside, full bar, and an ambience that's great for any meal or date night. Our go to's are the chicken pho, and soft shell crab pasta. The pasta is so rich with a little spice and soft shell crab is crispy and light. Centered in town, it is easy to get too. Swing by now!

Had lunch with my wife and brother-in-law. I had to minus a star from my previous review. Soon after being seated a child started crying loudly. I think it was one of the staff or owner's child. Very annoying. This went on for about 10 minutes. The couple seated near the child got up and left. A couple of minutes later The child was wheel out on a stroller. As for the food I noticed the many Yelpers gave high reviews for the soft shell crab with pasta. My take is that the crab was crispy and had a strong garlic flavor. I really didn't care for the sauce used in the noodles. The calimari was crisp and tender. The dipping sauce I didn't care for. This is a Vietnamese after all so Enjoy.

First time here seen all the reviews from other Yelpers and it's all pretty good . Had to try it for myself so had lunch with sister and brother in law. Parking lot is very crowded because they share with other businesses like Starbucks and Orielly Auto parts . I was disappointed in the soft shell crab Pasta the pasta was very sweet the soft shell grab was ok. Their appetizers have lots of garlic . I love garlic but not so much on top of fried foods . The fried chicken , calamari all had lots of garlic . Ambiance is very noisy although the highlight was our server he was fast and efficient. He took away our rubbish from our table right away . Hope the best for Chao but to be honest I won't be going back just not my cup a tea . Support Local whenever possible

"Good food is very often, even most often, simple food." ― Anthony Bourdain I have been seeing so many photos and reviews for this amazing place before arriving on vacation that I knew I would be stopping by for a bite. I already knew what I want, I just needed to get myself here and wow. What a great meal! Beef Carpaccio: Paper-thinly sliced raw beef tenderloin with an herb mix, onions, crispy shallots, lime vinaigrette, and Thai chili. Such a flavor bomb compared the usual Italian classic with lemon, olive oil, and capers. Crispy Calamari: Garlic, jalapeño, and a chili lime sauce. I don't even remember eating this as there were so many plates on the table. I only realized this was ordered after uploading my photos on here. I'm sure they were great though. Grilled Sweet Corn: Curry butter, pork floss, and chives. I avoided this not because it didn't look or smell good because it did. I just generally avoid eating corn-on-the-cob in public. I'll end up looking like a child with corn on my face if I attempted to eat corn-on-the-cob in public! Hamachi Poke: Spicy tobiko roe mayo, salted calamansi, and served with shrimp chips. Good flavor balance and fun texture. I can absolutely inhale this all by myself. Spanish Octopus: Mixed herbs, roasted peanuts, and roasted fish sauce. Perfectly tender with a great flavor profile. Duck Salad: Seared duck breast, lettuce, crispy fried noodles, and fresno chiles with a creamy house dressing. Get this. The fresh crisp bite of salad helps cut the flavors of everything else you are eating. Brisket Beef Stew: My twinsie actually had this and it smelled great. Taste wise, I'm sure it was good. It's beef, potatoes, and onions in bo kho. It can only be good. Soft Shell Crab Pasta: Fried soft shell crab, fresh noodles, and lemongrass tossed in beurre monté ("mounted butter"). This was the single dish that made me want to pop in. I have been haunted on Yelp by this soft shell crab that's standing up, needing me to have five it with my chopsticks. It was good. It was tasty. I ate a lot of the noodles even. Chao Penicilin: Chivas, ginger, and honey. This was Randy S.'s drink but I fell in love with it quickly. It tasted like a fresh ginger root was strangled and poured into a glass. This is 100% my kind of drink. I love it when ginger bites back. Vietnamese Espresso Martini: Vietnamese coffee, Mr. Brown, and Absolut vodka. You can't go wrong with Vietnamese coffee and you definitely can't go wrong with an espresso martini. Up until the point when I tried the Chao Penicillin, I was elated with my martini, haha! What a great place. I'll be day dreaming of that Soft Shell Crab Pasta and Chao Penicilin now that I've finished this review.

Lunchtime led us to a lovely meal, Chao. A place that was highly raved about by friends, and my Dad and I were anxious to try. Our experience was great, and I'm still thinking of what I ate. My unnie, Li Y., made reservations for us. We were sitting inside, farther back. The restaurant is stylish yet more casual. A nice watering hole for locals and visitors to enjoy meals, drinks, or happy hour. We came for lunch and were treated like family by all staff. It was great to talk story, have our questions answered, and enjoy our meal at our own leisure. We chose to order family style and shared the Crispy Calamari, Roasted Eggplant, Duck Rice, and Soft Shell Crab Pasta. Everything was superb. The flavors, seasonings, spices, all of it was on point. Loved the roast on the eggplant, the calamari was crispy and great with the sauce, and the crab pasta was so creamy and nicely balanced. My favorite was the duck rice. The duck was so tender, and the rice had so much flavor. I could eat so much of it and hope to try their other rice dishes in the future. Their Ube Dream drink was also a nice surprise--creamy ube with a refreshingly tart lime taste. Chao took my taste buds on a trip, and I recommend everyone try this spot if you're into Vietnamese or fusion cuisine. Find them in the Nuʻuanu Shopping Plaza. Parking is hit-or-miss in the plaza, depending on the time of day you go.

Awesome food, casual ambiance, good service, but I was freezing my butt off. This place has a different take on Vietnamese food but I love how modern and true to the culture it is. Don't come here for the pho though, try everything else!

Came for lunch to celebrate 3 birthdays. Beef pho was great! It had a tender piece of brisket that covered a 1/3 of the bowl. Very satisfying and now I am stuffed! Great service as well. Very nice decor and ambiance.

The hype is real. Been hearing about this place for a while and finally got to try. The scallop ceviche was sooo yummy and fresh and a nice take on ceviche. Their beef tar tar was also so good and so soft. The star of the show was the crab pasta which we added extra blue crab which totally took my breath away. The flavors are so diverse and creamy and the soft crab had surprisingly a lot of meat inside. I would absolutely come again just for that. They have a parking lot right outside but I can get busy so come early.

Well we finally came here to eat lunch. We came when they 1st opened their soft opening. Today 6-10-26 it was busy. Made reservations on open table even though we're there before they open at 11. We ordered spring rolls, calamari, chicken wings. And tried their soft shell crab pasta. The appetizers were good if you love garlic its for you. I'm not much of a garlic eater but was ok. The soft shell crab pasta was on the sweet side the pasta that is. The soft shell crab was good. The place was crowded and I think the owners son wasnt happy kept on crying and made the place nosiey. After about 15 mins or so she took him outside.

Ok, it has been a hot minute since I've felt compelled to write a review. But oh man, does this place deserve it. Heard about Chao for a while, but never really tried it until someone made the bold claim that it is their favorite restaurant in Hawaii. Reservations were easy enough on a weeknight. When we got there, I will admit, I had some reservations. They're on a nondescript spot in Nuuanu, nothing fancy or showy. But holy cow, the food blew us away! Let me preface by saying that we have been trying to "discover" a new spot that was unique and delicious. Chao for sure delivered. First, the drinks. We had the Vietnamese Espresso Martini and the Night Market Fun. The martini was coffee forward as expected, but it was exceptionally smooth, with that distinct Vietnamese coffee flavor. Night Market was a tequila/mezcal based drink, and while I normally steer clear of mezcal, I decided to give it a try. It was very refreshing and the mezcal was pronounced in the smokiness, but it wasn't overpowering or abrasive. Definitely enjoyed both significantly but my favorite would have to be the espresso martini. Next, we got the wings and the grilled corn. The wings were perfectly cooked and exceptionally seasoned. The balance of salt, sweetness, and very slight heat was pleasantly unexpected. It is kid-friendly and we had to order another one just for the girls. The grilled corn was topped with chives, curry butter, and pork floss. The toppings and the char highlighted the nice gentle sweetness of the corn. For our mains, we ordered the House Fried Rise with the lemongrass chicken, the soft shell crab pasta with extra blue crab meat, and the Washugyu Picanha. The fried rice cooked in chicken fat was so flavorful but not in a cloying way, and the kids loved the chicken (although not as much as the wings). The rice also complemented the picanha perfectly, so no need to order rice with it. Pro tip: The chimichurri was quite strong so use sparingly! The salad underneath it though, that made the dish. It was the perfect crunch and acidity that made you want to keep going for more! Finally, the pasta. It comes with 2 whole deep-fried soft shell crabs with lemongrass and garlic beurre monte. It also has some masago mixed in and the extra blue crab meat was a must! It was very rich, creamy, and all umami in the very best way! Bites of the crunchy soft shell crab and masago provided an amazing texture balance, and the extra blue crab just took it over the top. Pro tip: get a drink that'll give you the palate cleansing and acidity that would cut through the richness of the pasta. We were too full to try the dessert but the coconut flan looked enticing. They also had happy hour starting at 8pm so I ordered a lilikoi margarita. Needless to say, it was done really well, not overly sweet, tastes very much like fresh passion fruit, with that hint of tartness from the lemon. It t was really refreshing! The staff were very attentive and friendly, and knowledgeable of the menu. They genuinely looked happy to be there. Our server took his time to go over the check with us to make sure we were charged correctly. I don't think I've ever seen that before. It was quite nice. The place is very loud though, the one con that is not really a deterrent, so maybe not the best choice for a first date. We already booked our next reservation and we can't wait to try the rest of the menu! So glad we found our "new" spot that is unique and wonderful!

    Caren G.

The food was just amazing. I especially loved how the Hamachi Crudo was prepared because the meat was individually fried and placed back into the fish which made it easier to enjoy bite size pieces. Perfectly fried! The Soft Shell Crab Pasta was by far, delicious. Everything we tried were hands down fantastic! Good lighting, clean restaurant and restroom...efficient and friendly service. Located in a little strip mall, so parking can take a bit to find. Highly recommend this

To my surprise, on a Sunday evening after having dinner nearby at Maze, my wife and I walked over to Bar Leather Apron and we were able to get seated right away! In fact, around 7:30 p.m. when we stopped by, there was actually a ton of seating available in the bar. Who would've guessed. If you're in the same boat as me and are unable to find a reservation for your upcoming visit, I would encourage you to stop by and try a walk-in. The first page of the menu lists a wide variety of whiskey based cocktails. Most -- if not all, of the cocktails are pre-fixed with BLA (Bar Leather Apron), and represent a collaboration with the named distillery. If you're fan of whiskey, you'll definitely have a difficult time picking only one. I ultimately ordered their "Take Warning" -- 2021 BLA Knob Creek BLA Single Barrel, Cynar, Carpano Antica, Mezcal, Bergamot Salt. Drinks here are not cheap -- averaging $20 to $25 per drink. Although my drink was very spirit forward, it still felt very well balanced. I appreciated the hint of smokiness from the mezcal that rounded out the end of a sip. Service here quick and friendly. When we received the check, a cute small chocolate snack was brought over as well, borrowed from the menu at Maze. Overall, I can see why Bar Leather Apron has earned so many accolades in its field. Definitely worth a stop by if you enjoy the art of mixology.

It is why you've searched for EP bar, looked over various reviews, and randomly found yourself reading thru the first few lines of this review. Well, welcome Dear Reader, and I hope what I'm about to share peaks your interest to visit EP Bar. I had my 2nd visit to EP Bar earlier this month with friends for some after dinner drinks. We did make a res, but there were some walk-ins while we there, so it's probably recommended but not necessary. We perused the menu, and our 1st round consisted of: Ringo Star Strawberry Fields Forever Pho Us By Us Hail Mary Any guesses on the drink I chose? It's related to the Beatles. If you guessed Ringo Star.....take another guess. The Strawberry Fields Forever was very refreshing. Recommended. My partner ordered the Hail Mary, which (sadly) wasn't to his liking, and he happily "helped" me finish my drink before ordering his own in the next round. I chose the Ringo Star as my next drink, and I'd say if you're a fan of Mr. Star and/or apples, this drink is right up your orchard. Recommended. SERVICE The service is friendly, mixed with a splash of polite, and served with patience and knowledge. BOTTOM LINE A great place for drinks. Casual ambiance/vibe and relaxed atmosphere. Recommended.

The neighborhood is vibrant, gritty, and alive--a mix of Chinese, Southeast Asian, and Native Hawaiian influences layered over historic buildings, glowing neon signs, art galleries, and hidden cocktail dens. It reminded me a bit of New Orleans: worn facades with stories to tell, creative energy around every corner, and the sense that the best experiences are often tucked behind an unassuming door. Which makes it the perfect home for EP Bar. "EP" stands for Extend Play, a fitting name for a place built around music. Long before listening bars became fashionable in Los Angeles, New York, and London, there were the jazz kissa of Japan--small cafés where people gathered not to drink or dance, but to listen. Records spun through carefully tuned sound systems while patrons sat immersed in the music. The music wasn't background noise. It was the main event. Walking into EP Bar, you can feel traces of that tradition. The room is intimate and inviting. Reservations are highly recommended because the place fills up quickly on weekend nights. Once inside, the atmosphere hits a sweet spot. The music is loud enough to create a mood and provide privacy for conversation, yet never so overpowering that it dominates the room. Loud enough to muffle the secrets being shared between old friends. Loud enough to drown out the office gossip that somehow followed everyone from the coffee machine into happy hour. The soundtrack isn't just playing--it's setting the tone. As an Old Fashioned guy, my choice was easy. I ordered a Oaxaca OF, which swaps traditional whiskey for mezcal. Smoky, balanced, and memorable, it felt like the kind of drink that rewards slow sipping between tracks. Another member of our group went with the Pho Us By Us. To nobody's surprise except perhaps her own, it tasted a little salty. Considering the ingredients--Green Chile Vodka, Sake, Pho Spice, Lemon, and Soda--it was probably the most honest cocktail description I've ever seen. The drink tasted exactly like its name suggested. That's part of the fun here. The menu doesn't hide behind clever marketing. Drinks like Thai Me Down and Candy Rain practically dare you to order them. Not every note landed perfectly. Service was a little off-beat during our visit. But like any live performance, sometimes the rhythm isn't flawless. Thankfully, the vibes, decor, music, and overall experience more than carried the set. What I appreciated most was that EP Bar doesn't feel like a gimmick. It feels like a genuine continuation of a tradition that began decades ago in Japan's listening cafés, traveled across oceans, and found a home in Honolulu's Chinatown. It's a place where music matters, conversation flows, and the pace of the evening slows down just enough to appreciate both. The place slaps for what it is--and for what it isn't. In a world increasingly filled with distractions, EP Bar invites you to do something refreshingly simple: sit down, have a great drink, listen to great music, and be present. I'll definitely be back. After all, every good record deserves another spin, and I'm curious to see how the needle lands next time.

Tucked on the second floor of a Piikoi Parkway building, it feels like stepping back in time, a true bespoke bar with vintage art, moody lighting, and comfy couches that make it perfect for couples or a night out with friends. We sat at the bar, which was a highlight, Michael and Tony were welcoming, easy to talk story with, and clearly know their craft. I went with the Barreled Old Man, a smooth, layered mix of bourbon, rye, and brandy that just worked, while my wife's Sesame Veil brought a nutty, balanced flavor that stood out. For round two, the Espressing My Love was a great take on an espresso martini, and Michael built my wife a custom drink off her favorite flavors and nailed it again. We paired it with the smoked mozzarella and salami grilled cheese and Ho Farms tomato soup, and this is where it really hit. The sandwich came out hot and crisp, and when you took a bite the cheese pulled away just right, that perfect melt, with the salami adding a savory kick. The tomato soup was fresh, bright, and made for dipping you didn't want to stop. We were welcomed with a table that had our name on it, a small touch that goes a long way. Prices are on point for the quality and experience you're getting. It's a bit of a hidden, hip spot, not for a quick drink but for when you want to sit, relax, and enjoy it. Parking is tight, but you can park at Ala Moana and walk over, and it's worth it. Next time we're coming back for Grandma's Old Fashioned and the pork belly bao buns. This isn't a bar you stumble into, it's one you come back to.

Thankfully, Michael and his team were able to accommodate us, which I really appreciated. From the moment we walked in, the place had a great vibe, the interior is beautiful. Throughout the night, the staff and Michael (the owner) were incredibly welcoming, funny and attentive. The cocktails were amazing. I had the expressing my love all night and even though the place was busy and there was a bit of a wait for food, it was honestly worth it. We had the crab dynamite, the ahi brioche, and the prosciutto and burrata. SO GOOD! My friends and I had such a great time and will definitely be back.

Best background music too! Lots of classic and modern exotica. Sat at the bar so we could watch all the drinks being made and so happy we did. Making tiki drinks is an art form as so much goes into them. We had a Navy Grog, King Kō Swizzle, and the non-alcoholic Sunset Passion. All of them were so delicious and it was fun to have the Navy Grog with the traditional ice cone! Attention to detail was obvious as was the quality of ingredients and rum! Everyone working was very sweet and it was just good vibes all around We did not eat but they do have a full restaurant and what we saw people ordering all looked yummy Highly recommend when you're in town; a wonderful place to get away from the hustle of Waikiki and enjoy a local gem

The drinks also match the theme as the cocktail menu is primarily made up of rum-based drinks. I ordered the Pua 'ula 'ula which was fruity and a bit floral. The food was tasty - we got the lettuce wraps and salmon belly special. The lettuce wraps do take a bit of assembly, so not the best if you don't like to work for your food. The service was friendly and quick. I would return if in the area and looking for a quick drink/bite to eat.

There are two sections to Nico's - a take out are where you can order poke, poke bowls, Hawaiian food, as well as fresh fish; also available are beer in a cooler and wine. Next door is a busy restaurant with a full bar. My sister and I wanted some poke and based on her friend's recommendation, we decided to visit. I ordered the special ultimate poke bowl (three fish selection) and it's amazing where there is more poke than rice! My sister's choice was also tasty. As we were checking out, the young cashier stated we could eat next door in the restaurant - wow, a pleasant surprise. It was during lunch so the restaurant was busy, but we found a seat. What's goes great with great fresh poke? Great fresh poke + beer, which was available at the bar! A great combination. Located off of Nimitz, Nico's is located on the far end of a converted warehouse, close to the pier, park and walk. It's worth visiting.

Lunch menu has more variety and the dishes are done well (Blackened ahi sandwich is sooo good, truffle fries, chicken katsu ) This review is for the dinner service: Ambiance: it's a good view, it's right on the pier, and it's dog friendly. (4/5) Staff: Hostess - we asked to sit outside and asked for a table near the railings - she told us that the table wasn't available but it was available the entire time we were there and there were several other open tables. (3/5) Waiter: quick service (mostly) & friendly. But didn't refill our water or inquire - tbf he was covering a lot of tables.(4/5) Food: (5/5) Poke Nachos. Order these, you won't be disappointed. Creme Brûlée Cheesecake - this was so good. (4/5) Drink/After 7: I like when the presentation looks like the pic; This did not but it was delicious. (3/5) Garlic chicken bites / average - crunchy but a little bland Edamame / fresh but average Monchong (catch of the day) the fish was fresh but the seasoning was bland Steak fritters- the steak was well cooked and flavorful, but the fries were way over salted and tasted previously frozen. (2/5) The burger - the patties had too much filling and not enough "burger". I got the side salad instead of fries and it's just green leaf lettuce, a little wilted, withe house dressing, and the dressing is not great. Desert slices are small and cost 8.50-13.00 (go down the road to Liliha Bakery instead) Vanilla Caramel Crunch cake - there wasn't a real "crunch" and the caramel layer in the top is way too thick. Chocolate cake - too dense Mango cheesecake - too tart

So they have a custom blend of Maker's Mark you can try. I didnt order it, but it seems interesting. The food was prepared well, everything came out crisp and contrasted with the other ingredients. The roasted steam bun was interesting, it make me think of gua Bao which has a lot of similar touches but not crispy pork belly like they do here. The chicken parmesean was good, but probably not their most notable dish. Interior seemes modern and relatovely compact. If you come here to host a gathering of more than ten, it may be better to book the venue altogether. The space is rectangular, and there isnt really a great sea ting for bigger groups to be together and engaged. The restaurant should be able to fit around 25 people.
