Hamachi Crudo @ $19 - much more delicate than it appears - delish!
    Kimiko D.

The fish (Hamachi Crudo, King Salmon & Moi) is some of the best we've ever had - so fresh! Liza was our server and she did a great job - let us take our time & was very professional. The ambience is a little off - where we were seated originally, we felt like we were center stage with all eyes on us - we moved and felt a little better. I like the brightness for lunch, but maybe dim the lights just slightly for dinner? Overall - the food and service win - will definitely return!

    Happy hour menu. Watch out!!

This is the old Nami kaze spot. The restaurant for the most part is exactly the same inside. The menu I felt was pretty limited and pricey. There wasn't much variety. We came just before 5p and was told there was happy hour. We ordered a bunch of things off the happy hour menu to get in an order of happy hour priced things. Then we got the regular menu and realized everything on the happy hour menu except select drinks and oysters were exactly the same price. Boo! So watch out the happy hour menu is deceiving!! The food was ok not amazing. We tried the fried moi which was underwhelming. We also got the poke rice crackers which were disappointing as they came on senbei crackers that kinda made it bland. Otherwise the service was excellent- friendly, polite and helpful. The parking is easy all around the pier.

Save this for your next date night. If you're looking for one of Honolulu's freshest new seafood experiences, Thirty Eight at Pier 38 delivers in a way that feels both elevated and effortlessly local. Local classics with a modern twist. From the moment you walk in, there's something special about the harbor-side setting. It's clean, modern, and relaxed--but still refined enough for a date night or celebrating something meaningful. You're right by the source of Hawai'i's seafood, and you can taste that intention in every dish. We started with the Spicy Ahi Cracker, and this is where things set the tone. Bright, clean flavors with just enough heat, layered over that satisfying crunch--it's the kind of bite that wakes up your palate immediately. The Maguro Cabbage was a standout in a completely different way. Fresh farm tomatoes, a touch of harissa chili crunch, and delicate slices of maguro come together in a dish that feels light but thoughtfully composed. It's refreshing, slightly bold, and beautifully balanced. Even something familiar like the Cabbage Caesar gets elevated here. The miso Caesar dressing adds a subtle umami depth, paired with fried anchovies and parmesan for texture and richness. It's creative without trying too hard--exactly what you want from a modern kitchen. For mains, the Fried Moi was comforting yet refined. Perfectly cooked fish paired with savory elements like Chinese sausage and mushrooms, all grounded by bok choy--it's a dish that feels rooted in local flavors but presented with intention. And then the Furikake King Salmon--this is the kind of plate that reminds you why fresh seafood in Hawai'i hits different. Rich, flavorful, and executed with precision. What really stands out at Thirty Eight is the balance. Nothing feels overcomplicated, but every dish shows technique, care, and respect for the ingredients. It's the kind of place where you can come hungry, try a variety of dishes, and leave already planning your next visit. Overall, Thirty Eight is a strong addition to Honolulu's dining scene--fresh, thoughtful, and quietly impressive. Definitely one to visit before it becomes everyone's go-to spot.

Only a month into its soft opening, this spot is already a must-try. While the name may be familiar, it's now under new ownership, with Chef Daysen Masuda bringing a fresh and exciting energy to the menu. We made a last-minute decision to dine here and had no trouble securing a reservation through OpenTable. Because they're still in soft opening, it wasn't too crowded--but that worked in our favor. The staff was incredibly attentive, eager to help, and genuinely welcoming from start to finish. Not knowing exactly what to order, we decided to explore a variety of dishes across the menu--and we're so glad we did. We kicked things off with cocktails. My boyfriend ordered the Dock Broker, which had a profile similar to an Old Fashioned--smooth, strong, and well-balanced. I went with the Classics Never Die, which had a touch of sweetness layered with complex flavors. Both drinks were bold and memorable--we'd absolutely order them again. As for the food--every single dish was a 10/10. We started with the Cabbage Caesar, not quite knowing what to expect, and it completely blew us away. The miso Caesar dressing added a rich creaminess, perfectly complemented by the salty bite of anchovies. It was a unique twist that worked beautifully. Next came the spicy ahi crackers and Spanish octopus--both dishes delivered flavors we hadn't experienced before, in the best way possible. Each bite felt creative and thoughtfully executed, which only built our excitement for what was next. The whole fried moi was a standout: perfectly crispy on the outside, with tender, flaky fish inside. The fact that it was deboned made it even more enjoyable--no effort needed, just pure flavor. We also tried the black cod with squid ink rice, which had a creamy, risotto-like texture. The cod was cooked flawlessly--soft, buttery, and packed with flavor--while the rice added depth and richness to the dish. To finish, we shared the Vietnamese iced coffee ice cream and yuzu sorbet. Both were refreshing and well-balanced, the perfect ending to a flavorful meal. The space itself is open and inviting--ideal for gathering with friends and family. Between the exceptional food, attentive service, and welcoming atmosphere, this place truly delivers. We left impressed and already looking forward to our next visit.

Had a pretty good meal here the other night despite this place still being in soft opening. The menu is decent sized and the entrees are pretty much one of everything. One salmon, one ahi, one moi, one beef, etc. The kitchen did a great job getting the food out and serving tasty grinds. Prices lean a bit high for a space that feels a bit casual but the quality of food ingredients and preparation is good. This is an awful time to open a new restaurant. I hope they get the support they'll need pretty quickly when they're up to full speed. Check them out!

What an experience. Had the pleasure of dining with the chef when he had his sushi pop up and that did not disappoint so only right that this place was the same in comparison. MAGURO CABBAGE $21 local bigeye ahi, ginger scallion, ikura zuke. This was absolutely amazing. So refreshing and fresh. Definitely recommend a try 5stars* SPICY AHI CRACKER 12 local bigeye tuna, spicy aioli, avocado, tare, on a rice cracker. Came with Two pieces. Was flavorful and had great texture. 4 stars* SHRIMP TOAST 12 shokupan, makrut, chili sauce. The shrimp toast was perfectly toasted, lacked a bit of flavor but the dipping sauce was so good I could drink it. 4 stars* BLACK COD 35 misoyaki, squid ink rice, fried leeks. Cod was so soft and buttery. The squid ink rice was so creamy and flavorful. Definitely was a favorite of the night. 5 stars* FRIED WHOLE MOI 42 alii mushroom & lup chong stuffing, bok choy. The whole fish was fried to perfection. The sauce was so creamy and complemented the fish perfectly. I even took some of the fried fish and dipped it into the shrimp toast sauce... game changer. 5 stars* Service was decent. They're still in their soft opening so I think they're still working out all the kinks. Very clean and inviting atmosphere. Plenty of parking available in the lots provided behind and surrounding the restaurant. All in all a very pleasant experience with amazing food. Will definitely be back to try more options.

Great dinner, lively spot with friendly service and bold flavors. The Michter's neat was an easy sipper; the furikake salmon was perfectly seared and umami-forward, and the black cod was rich and flaky. Calamari katsu was satisfyingly crunchy, hamachi crudo bright and clean, and the shrimp toast was addictive. perfect share starter. Reasonable portions for the price; definitely order the furikake salmon and shrimp toast.

*chefs kiss* to daysen and his crew! first people in, waiting outside the door before they opened at 5, and basically last people out at 9p on a sunday night. ordered like 90% of the menu: oysters, hamachi, cucumber, cabbage caesar, shrimp toast, octopus, calamari katsu, cauliflower, ahi steak, salmon, moi, crispy potatoes, vietnamese coffee ice cream, shiso mint ice cream, and the sorbet cocktails: classics never die, paradise 2002, reef rider, dock broker, espresso martinis, pinot noir menu is on the smaller more curated side. not crazy extensive like chain restaurants or people who try to do it all. that means you can expect every dish to be well thought out, made with love, and presented like its walking down the red carpet. that being said, you really cant go wrong with anything. though we did not need the side of crispy potatoes since our main came with the same exact potats, i thought they were going to be diff thats why i ordered them. my fave dish was the shrimp toast staff are also super friendly and helpful too. we loved that our waitress was down to play a joke on our one friend who arrived 30min late to dinner

Great staff. After seeing all the posts, we ordered the moi. I was disappointed. The stir fry was under the fish and it had a lot of liquid. The bottom of the fish became soggy. The top was crispy but I could taste the flour. The calamari katsu was very good. Also, the cabbage caesar. The bubu matcha arare did not match the yuzu sorbet. Very noisy. Don't expect to be able to hear each other.

Thirty Eight which is across Nico's at the previous Namekaze Restaurant. The restaurant had a soft opening and we had the privilege of coming in and trying it out. Thirty Eight is a new seafood joint featuring a local assortment of fish and ingredients. It's clean and well lit and has a pretty good amount of seating. Staff is friendly and the kitchen is well organized. Our water was always full and staff is always attentive. Parking is plentiful, though some walking may be required. Food is not only amazing but the prices is reasonable for being a seafood restaurant. For starters we had the Caesar Cabbage which had anchovies and dressing. Nice saltiness and not served like a traditional Caesar Salad. Well balanced and full of flavor. Oysters were fresh! Could've eaten 2 orders if we didn't order a lot of food. The shrimp toast was a winner. The dipping sauce was amazing! For entrees we had the huli huli chicken which could've used a bit more seasoning, but the meat was super tender and it came with kabocha watercress salad which tasted really well. The poke crackers were also a hit at our table. It only comes in twos so be prepared to order more cuz it's tasty!!! The Moi was the winner tonight with the lup Chong sauce which was simple yet so flavorful. Could've served the sauce alone over rice. For desserts they had specialty ice cream by Please Come Again Ice Cream. We had the Thai coffee flavor which was a nice night capper to a great and affordable meal. I can see Thirty Eight restaurant being an after work casual place to come for a quick drink with a sorta more upscale restaurant but super casual. Most definitely recommended!!

Lunch in Honolulu, Hawaii... Located at Pier 38, Thirty Eight is a Hot New Business! Note: This space used to be Nami Kaze. Currently, Thirty Eight is only open on weekdays between 10am and 2pm because it's their Soft Opening phase. We appreciated the free, shared parking, clean, modern environment, and convenient restroom. When we walked in, we were invited to seat ourselves, help ourselves to disposable napkins and utensils, and to scan the QR code to order and pay online. Our meals, served in takeout containers, were brought to our table. I ordered the Misoyaki Salmon which came with rice and a fresh, green salad on the side and a container of dressing. Everything was delicious and nicely plated, but my Salmon was a bit undercooked... and my friend's lemon wedges were dry (no juice was present) and one wedge had a brown spot on it. Service was efficient and friendly... although, my friend asked for more "malt vinegar dipping sauce" and the server forgot to bring it... I realize that it's Soft Opening phase, so I'll give them a break...

    Appetizer shishito peppers. So good.

Located off of Nimitz Hwy on the pier side. A nice little restaurant with amazing chefs. Lunch menu is small but well curated. Try anything and you'll be pleasantly surprised. The mixed plate and miso cod were perfect for lunch. Oysters are a real treat. Very clean, easy parking, great service and fair prices.

Fish & Chips. Three overcooked pieces. No slaw. Dry lemon wedges w one actually turned brown. Never again.

This is a place still in its soft opening. It feels like there is a lot of work still to be done. This is a first brick and mortar for Chef Justin Inagaki, who says, "I'm a fine dining chef actually, by trade ... My wheelhouse is ... whatever the concept might be. I also want to be different - we don't just want to be like everybody else." The place still has the same layout as the former Nami Kaze. There is no sign currently up and you'd have to know to find them ... or just be curious and take a chance. There is minimal service - you take a seat anywhere, order and pay via QR code, and your order will be brought to you when ready. If you just want to take away then head to the POS station by the bar. It appears they have a limited liquor license. The back bar shelves reflect the limited offerings available. The soft opening menu is pretty basic. A couple of soups and salads, four entrees, a couple of sandwiches. The food descriptions sound very promising but the actual execution falls short. I went with Nadine C and Peter Y, who both ordered the salmon entree - it looked good but neither actually said they thought the salmon stood out. A Yelper at another table recognized Nadine and mentioned the hamburger steak plate wasn't to their taste either. I ordered the fish & chips - to compare it with Nico's. The description is, beer & vodka battered ahi belly, salt & pepper slaw, house tartar sauce, house finadene, fries. My three pieces of ahi belly were overcooked. There was no slaw included. The fries were packaged crinkle cup ones - a couple of pieces had unappetizing green ends. There were three wedges of lemon - all dry, and one going bad with a brown end. I was really surprised they cared so little about the plating - in a take away container - that they would give me the bad pieces of fries and lemon. I really hoped to enjoy this but the fish & chips were barely better than a low end drive-in. Maybe things will improve. But for now I prefer the fish and chips and bar service at Nicos Pier 38. This looks like a one and done TOFTT.

    Hammachi must try!!!

To my surprise, on a Sunday evening after having dinner nearby at Maze, my wife and I walked over to Bar Leather Apron and we were able to get seated right away! In fact, around 7:30 p.m. when we stopped by, there was actually a ton of seating available in the bar. Who would've guessed. If you're in the same boat as me and are unable to find a reservation for your upcoming visit, I would encourage you to stop by and try a walk-in. The first page of the menu lists a wide variety of whiskey based cocktails. Most -- if not all, of the cocktails are pre-fixed with BLA (Bar Leather Apron), and represent a collaboration with the named distillery. If you're fan of whiskey, you'll definitely have a difficult time picking only one. I ultimately ordered their "Take Warning" -- 2021 BLA Knob Creek BLA Single Barrel, Cynar, Carpano Antica, Mezcal, Bergamot Salt. Drinks here are not cheap -- averaging $20 to $25 per drink. Although my drink was very spirit forward, it still felt very well balanced. I appreciated the hint of smokiness from the mezcal that rounded out the end of a sip. Service here quick and friendly. When we received the check, a cute small chocolate snack was brought over as well, borrowed from the menu at Maze. Overall, I can see why Bar Leather Apron has earned so many accolades in its field. Definitely worth a stop by if you enjoy the art of mixology.

Anyways when you get to the top it's like being in another city (ok that's seriously what I think...) it's beautiful! There's an indoor section and an outdoor rooftop with greenery on the walls. Seating outside and inside is beautiful. We went around sunset, sat outside and there was a nice city feel outside with buildings all around. I loved it. When the sunset the lighting outside on the patio beautiful & relaxing. I don't drink but I love food and it was good, perfect pupus! We had the charcuterie board, fries, and a few others. Huge plus, they had mocktails!!! Service was good. The bartender was knowledgeable about the menu and drinks & gave recommendations. He even made hot water for my friends at the end. It wasn't crowded - like we were the only ones there. We stayed for awhile talking and it was comfortable and relaxing!!! I would've never known this beautiful place existed on Hotel Street. It's really an amazing relaxing experience. Parking: we parked in the municipal parking lot by Hawai'i Theatre.

Our server was gracious in helping us pick a bottle of red that paired well with our mocha cake. He offered us a spacious table with comfortable seating for our group of 8. Thank you kindly for the plates, forks, and napkins :) Their outdoor seating is magical under the stars and we enjoyed celebrating here. Sorry, no pictures this time LOL Careful walking downstairs after a night of fun :)

The English toffee pudding. It's so so hard to find one made with dates. A ton of places call a lava cake with caramel sauce as English toffee pudding which it's not. But this is amazing, and pretty authentic cooking techniques. The cocktail menu is incredible! Their smash burger for lunch is wonderful!!! The brisket burger was very good. Then we had this mushroom bacon toast as an appetizer. We should have ordered two!!! We were basically fighting over it! Service was perfect and the waitstaff was attentive. Food came out fast. This place is so nice and beautiful inside. So lucky to have found this place. Cannot wait for a date night!!

The space itself is small and really cute, and clearly popular. They were fully booked even on a Tuesday. That said, it does make for a pretty tight environment. Tables are close together and you can easily hear conversations from across the room, so it does not feel very intimate or quiet. The drink itself was just okay. I am usually a vodka person and had the Romantic Lead. It was good, but nothing particularly memorable, and the portion felt very small. On the positive side, the staff was great and the crowd had a really good vibe. Overall, the service and people were wonderful. It was just the atmosphere that felt a bit off for me.
