For my third visit, I wanted to try the happy hour, but since it was a Saturday, it wasn't available. (Happy Hour is M-F 2-5.) They were only serving Weekend Brunch at 3:00 which I'm glad I got to try. DRINKS I recommended the Rising Phoenix (which I loved) to my friend who enjoyed it. Because I wanted to explore more of the menu I got the Pono Punch - bourbon, vanilla, lime, and almond which was a nice blend of flavors. Love that Tommy , the director of beverages (for Chao and Nori Bar Waikiki which are in the same family ) came by to get feedback. I told him I personally prefer a little less sweet but that's just me and drink was still lovely. Our server recommended the Salmon chazuke and Shrimp & "Grits" which my friend got. It came with 5 nice sized grilled shrimp atop a creamy savory plate of grits. Yum! Being someone who enjoys trying new dishes, I decided to go with the Shakshuka - fresh catch- hamachi , onsen egg, baguette, after our server reassured me that wasn't super spicy despite the chili pepper symbol. It turned out to be a substantial pan of flavorful tomato sauce with tasty chunks of yellowfin tuna that you can either turn into a sandwich or just use the bread on the side to scoop up the sauce. Good! Our Poke Tostada was petite but fine as an appetizer for us to share. Delish! Service has been consistently knowledgeable, professional, and friendly on every visit so far. Still need to come back for happy hour!

ok-Same owner as Chao Restaurant with Chef Justin at the helm. Tried this place when they first opened and operated on a limited serving schedule. I will admit the food and service was a bit underwhelming. (note- we sat at the bar and their "so-called" manager sat at the bar also observing what was going on in the establishment. Pretty shabby if you ask me... Second attempt was better than the first. The food was better and this time, we grabbed a table where the service was pretty good. Still learning but good. Third attempt ok, I admit getting better with each visit. The food was better and it's made upon order; unlike other places where the food is prepared and sits in the warmer or refrigerator. I ordered a Poke bowl and the fish was FRESH. The cucumbers were tossed upon order I'm sure because it held its crunch. The crab salad was a bit too much mayo for my liking but it tasted good. Decent price for what you get. Average dish runs you a cool $25 I think they have happy hour. I failed to check on that. Reservations can be made on Open Table. Parking in the lot by the public restrooms or in marked parking stalls along the roadways.

We parked in the open lot and made the short walk to the restaurant. Open kitchen clean dining room, tables close to other tables. We came at lunch time and before the lunch rush. Good thing because all the parking and restaurants were getting busy. We ordered two Fisherman Chowder and shared a Miso Butterfish lunch. The chowder was good but could have used a little oyster cracker or two or sourdough bread. The soup I felt missed something it was good though. The Miso Butterfish was delicious, and filling for us. We needed to eat light because of the errands we had to run in the afternoon. The prices are on par with others on the area. With all the options in the area, Thirty eight is one of our choices.

We planned on coming for lunch, but took too long getting ready. Instead, we made it to happy hour, daily from 2pm-5pm. They weren't too busy for happy hour. We came on a Monday and there were only two other tables besides ours. The best item to get for happy hour is definitely the fresh half shelled oysters $2.50 a piece (6 piece minimum). They were fresh, plump and naturally sweet. My poke nachos was also delicious and fresh $16. I went with the ginger scallion ahi. The other choice was the spicy ahi. It went great with the fresh fried wonton chips and kabayaki sauce. My hubby got the crispy chicken sandwich $15, which he said was ok. It came with really crispy shoestring fries, which were great. I drank a Vietnamese iced coffee $6. I love this coffee as it's made with condensed milk, but it's strong. We received excellent service. The feel of the restaurant is really modern. It has an open kitchen, so you can see them cooking up the food.

Easiest 5 star review I've given this year. This place is a home run, a grand slam. Food is DELICIOUS! We went to try the new weekend brunch menu! Our favorite dish was the tater tots. Who knew tater tots go so well with ikura? Not me! But now I know! Soooo yummy. Drizzled with sauce that tastes like aioli, on a bed of I think scrambled eggs? Tots were nice and crispy, piping hot. We ate every last morsel. Next fav was the shrimp and grits. WOW I've been looking for that smoky, fresh-off-the-bbq-grill flavor in shrimp for the longest time and finally found it. Pairs so well with the "grits" which tasted creamy, and umami, and ever so slightly spicy, and loved the lumpy texture. Wowow basically shoveled this into our mouths as quickly as possible. Next fav was the side order of kimchi fried rice! Very good, love the addition of bacon, I was expecting more of a strong kimchi flavor, but nonetheless the dish felt balanced. Very good portion size especially for a side order! Lastly but not leastly, the salmon benedict we thought was like good but standard good. I think the English muffin was a little tough/thick? And the salmon didn't have much flavor/maybe too thin. Still a good dish, but not as outstanding as the first two. Again, good portion size, would definitely fill me up. For drinks we both got Lion's coffee. Crazy as it may be, this was my first time trying Lion's coffee despite being born and raised here haha, and I totally get the tourist hype over Lion's coffee now--it's so good!! So roasty! Loved it! The cream they give at the restaurant is like real cream too, blended so well. Free refills on the coffee! Ambience is clean casual, open kitchen concept. Something small we rly appreciated was the table setup: some places will have the tables for 2 parties set up in a row, sometimes too close together and it feels like you're basically dining with the table next to you. But here they were thoughtful enough to orient the smaller tables perpendicularly such that you never felt like you were eating too close to the party next to you. Love that, whether intentional or not. Ample free parking. Reservations very easy online. I made a reservation for 2 just the night before going in on Sunday at noon. Service was great. Very attentive, food came out fast. The waitress told us about the executive chef(s?) and their other restaurant called Chao, we will definitely need to check that one out too! Price was totally reasonable given quality/portion. Will definitely be coming back! Great job! Thanks for the amazing food!

This restaurant replaced Namikaze right next to Nicos Pier. There is a bunch of parking on the side near the water or by the main restaurant. I went for the happy hour and I was surprised that it wasn't that busy. We did a walk in and there was only one other party there. It's exactly the same as how Namikaze was, modern and clean. The happy hour has a lot of great options for food and drinks. All of the food was delicious and the seafood tastes very fresh.

Came last night and again the food was delicious and the service was great. We had the the cabbage ceasar salad and the grilled octopus. It was delicious. Two of us had the miso butterfish and my other friend had the scallops. She enjoyed her meal as well. The miso butterfish had fried leaks on top which I love. However, I think it was fried too much that my friend and I both thought the butterfish had bones. That's how hard the leak garnish was on top of the fish. A little over fired leaks. Otherwise, the butterfish entree was delicious. The fish wasn't too sweet like some places make it. I would order it again I liked it so much. The place is nice and clean and spacious. You don't feel like you're so close to the next table.

Came here for dinner to celebrate a friend's birthday. We weren't seated right away since service is a little slow but it was okay. I wasn't impressed by the decor or ambiance but the menu had some interesting items and prices seemed fair to expensive. We ordered the fried moi, black miso cod, braised short rib, hamachi crudo, seafood ceviche, shrimp toast and ended with 2 desserts - deep fried kulolo sticks with a haupia dipping sauce and an ice cream parfait with Please Come Again's Vietnamese coffee ice cream (they ran out of their in house ice cream flavors). Loved the fried moi (favorite of the night). The skin was so crispy and fish was well salted. The hamachi crudo was a close second and nicely plated. The miso black cod dish was interesting. In my opinion, the squid ink risotto did not complement the miso cod very well but they were good separately. The braised short rib was the table's least favorite dish while the shrimp toast was the most popular. But I thought both dishes were throw aways. The shrimp toast tasted like eating a shrimp ball between two pieces of fried bread. I don't really like fish cake so it wasn't impressive or creative to me. My friends loved the dipping sauce, with strong accents of lemon grass and fish sauce. The short rib was a hefty dish but nothing stood out. Meat wasn't very juicy but okay. Seafood ceviche was the worst...way more tortilla chips than the seafood which was barely there. And it tasted a little fishy so I didn't really have any. Kulolo sticks were very heavy and oily. None of us finished one full stick but we did love the haupia/coconut dipping sauce. I could eat just that! The ice cream parfait was AMAZING. We all gobbled that up and loved the Vietnamese coffee ice cream!! I think some dishes are great here and others aren't so much. Would be back for the moi and maybe some other apps and dessert!

I came here with my cousins a few weeks ago to celebrate our birthdays. The space looks the same as the previous occupant, Nami Kaze. We made reservations in advance, and it wasn't very crowded, so it felt more intimate in the large space. The service was pretty good all evening. Water was refilled, questions about the menu were answered, and recommendations were made. The menu is seafood focused, with some twists on traditional Asian classics. For the food, we ordered: cabbage Caesar, shrimp toast, calamari, furikake king salmon, and braised short rib. This was enough for all three of us to share and be full. All the items we ordered were delicious. I loved the salmon, as it was cooked nicely, and the flavors of the sauce went perfectly with the fish. The braised short rib was also very good, with tender, melt-in-your-mouth meat accompanied by smooth and creamy potato puree. Overall, we had a great meal! Happy Eating!

Every once in a while I get together with my uncle for lunch. This time I chose to try Thirty Eight which has taken over the space previously occupied by Nami Kaze which I really enjoyed. With a reservation for 11:30 on a Wednesday, the restaurant was half empty (or half full depending on your perspective). The food came out pretty quickly, given that we were able to order, eat, and pay in under an hour. We tried the cabbage Caesar salad. My uncle had the miso butterfish while I tried the ahi belly. My uncle thought the miso butterfish was okay. However I found the ahi belly to be super salty. The watercress was actually a salad (which isn't clear on the menu), but the dressing was super salty. It tasted like they just poured fish sauce on it. The ahi belly itself was cooked perfectly, but again too salty. It comes with a ponzu butter sauce with capers and the fish was salty with and without the sauce. I'm not a big potato salad fan but that was the saving grace to be honest.. that and the slightly mushy rice. I was this close to asking for no rice and am so glad I did not. I don't say this often, but unfortunately, I don't think I'd return. I wish them much success though and hope this was a one-off experience.. or maybe I'm just ultra sensitive to salt today.

We checked this spot out for happy hour and enjoyed it! Everything tasted great (poke bowl was our favorite) and service was decent. Would definitely check out this spot again for a nice meal.

    Happy hour menu. Watch out!!

This is the old Nami kaze spot. The restaurant for the most part is exactly the same inside. The menu I felt was pretty limited and pricey. There wasn't much variety. We came just before 5p and was told there was happy hour. We ordered a bunch of things off the happy hour menu to get in an order of happy hour priced things. Then we got the regular menu and realized everything on the happy hour menu except select drinks and oysters were exactly the same price. Boo! So watch out the happy hour menu is deceiving!! The food was ok not amazing. We tried the fried moi which was underwhelming. We also got the poke rice crackers which were disappointing as they came on senbei crackers that kinda made it bland. Otherwise the service was excellent- friendly, polite and helpful. The parking is easy all around the pier.

Only a month into its soft opening, this spot is already a must-try. While the name may be familiar, it's now under new ownership, with Chef Daysen Masuda bringing a fresh and exciting energy to the menu. We made a last-minute decision to dine here and had no trouble securing a reservation through OpenTable. Because they're still in soft opening, it wasn't too crowded--but that worked in our favor. The staff was incredibly attentive, eager to help, and genuinely welcoming from start to finish. Not knowing exactly what to order, we decided to explore a variety of dishes across the menu--and we're so glad we did. We kicked things off with cocktails. My boyfriend ordered the Dock Broker, which had a profile similar to an Old Fashioned--smooth, strong, and well-balanced. I went with the Classics Never Die, which had a touch of sweetness layered with complex flavors. Both drinks were bold and memorable--we'd absolutely order them again. As for the food--every single dish was a 10/10. We started with the Cabbage Caesar, not quite knowing what to expect, and it completely blew us away. The miso Caesar dressing added a rich creaminess, perfectly complemented by the salty bite of anchovies. It was a unique twist that worked beautifully. Next came the spicy ahi crackers and Spanish octopus--both dishes delivered flavors we hadn't experienced before, in the best way possible. Each bite felt creative and thoughtfully executed, which only built our excitement for what was next. The whole fried moi was a standout: perfectly crispy on the outside, with tender, flaky fish inside. The fact that it was deboned made it even more enjoyable--no effort needed, just pure flavor. We also tried the black cod with squid ink rice, which had a creamy, risotto-like texture. The cod was cooked flawlessly--soft, buttery, and packed with flavor--while the rice added depth and richness to the dish. To finish, we shared the Vietnamese iced coffee ice cream and yuzu sorbet. Both were refreshing and well-balanced, the perfect ending to a flavorful meal. The space itself is open and inviting--ideal for gathering with friends and family. Between the exceptional food, attentive service, and welcoming atmosphere, this place truly delivers. We left impressed and already looking forward to our next visit.

To my surprise, on a Sunday evening after having dinner nearby at Maze, my wife and I walked over to Bar Leather Apron and we were able to get seated right away! In fact, around 7:30 p.m. when we stopped by, there was actually a ton of seating available in the bar. Who would've guessed. If you're in the same boat as me and are unable to find a reservation for your upcoming visit, I would encourage you to stop by and try a walk-in. The first page of the menu lists a wide variety of whiskey based cocktails. Most -- if not all, of the cocktails are pre-fixed with BLA (Bar Leather Apron), and represent a collaboration with the named distillery. If you're fan of whiskey, you'll definitely have a difficult time picking only one. I ultimately ordered their "Take Warning" -- 2021 BLA Knob Creek BLA Single Barrel, Cynar, Carpano Antica, Mezcal, Bergamot Salt. Drinks here are not cheap -- averaging $20 to $25 per drink. Although my drink was very spirit forward, it still felt very well balanced. I appreciated the hint of smokiness from the mezcal that rounded out the end of a sip. Service here quick and friendly. When we received the check, a cute small chocolate snack was brought over as well, borrowed from the menu at Maze. Overall, I can see why Bar Leather Apron has earned so many accolades in its field. Definitely worth a stop by if you enjoy the art of mixology.

The Umeshu Highball was also very pretty and tasty. My friend who works as a sake distributor was impressed with their selection of good sake, so of course we had to order a bottle. Our server brought it out in an ice bucket, kept it off to the side, and completely served it for us throughout. Very classy. The food menu is fun and creative, but unfortunately not really for me because it's entirely vegan. Most times, but ESPECIALLY when I'm drinking, I want MEAT. Tried the Wild Musubi, a vegan Spam musubi. I'm not actually sure what the "meat" was. Possibly fried tofu? Whatever it was, it was definitely a passable alternative, but would have been 100x better if it were just plain old Spam. It also falls victim to what I find is a common problem with vegan attempts at Japanese food: anything teriyaki ends up being way too treacly sweet without actual meat or seafood to ground it in reality. Also tried the Char Siu Tofu Bao, fried tofu in a red Chinese-style char siu sauce on fluffy white buns. Again, fun and certainly not bad, but these would be 1000x better with actual pork. If Wild Orange had this exact same creative food menu but carnivore edition, this place would probably be 7/5 stars for me. That being said, I know being vegan will actually be a huge draw for some people, and I appreciate that the food is creative rather than just the usual sad vegan afterthoughts. Parking is pretty easy by Honolulu standards. It's inside Hawaiian Brian's, so there's a large shared parking lot. That being said, you might still have trouble finding a spot during peak gym hours since you're competing with all the 24 Hour Fitness customers. All in all, I LOVE this place. Definitely a fun stop--first, middle, only, or nightcap--on a chill night out. Will absolutely be adding Wild Orange into the rotation of places to bring out-of-town guests when I want to impress them with something cool and different. The vegan menu probably means it'll be a couple-times-a-year place for me rather than a regular haunt. But for drinks, service, atmosphere, and pure VIBES? 20/10.

I went here for my birthday and didn't realize I should've made a reservation for a larger group,…read moreespecially since it was my first time. Thankfully, Michael and his team were able to accommodate us, which I really appreciated. From the moment we walked in, the place had a great vibe, the interior is beautiful. Throughout the night, the staff and Michael (the owner) were incredibly welcoming, funny and attentive. The cocktails were amazing. I had the expressing my love all night and even though the place was busy and there was a bit of a wait for food, it was honestly worth it. We had the crab dynamite, the ahi brioche, and the prosciutto and burrata. SO GOOD! My friends and I had such a great time and will definitely be back.

I've been waiting for this cocktail spot to iron out its flaws and become as good as it should be…read more Sadly, I don't think it will happen. That's a shame because it has the potential to be very good. When you start with a cocktail concept that is deliberately kept low key with no signage, and a drink menu that rotates and evolves, you have a pretty good floor to start. Having a cozy place to settle in and being able to enjoy food from Chris Kajioka should give 430 Pkwy a high ceiling. If you like an espresso martini try something a little different. Their Espressing My Love batches espresso with Averna, black walnut bitters, and a unique monkeypod syrup. Unfortunately, there is no espresso machine so you cannot get fresh drawn espresso to make a Carajillo the way Cafe Miro use to. The ahi brioche is a carry over from all Chris Kajioka places. The grilled cheese is excellent. Hotdogs are kicked up - it used to be a black truffled miso chicken sausage but the current one is a little different. The problem is the food preparation totally undermines the whole place. Without a separate kitchen you have frying being done just a few feet away from where cocktails are made. If you sit on the right side of the bar you will quickly understand why this doesn't work. I would come here more frequently if i didn't have to smell like cooking oil afterwards. Fix that problem and this place would rock.

Our host invited us to choose our seats. Being the only guests, the service was unparalleled. Likewise the ambiance. We ordered a charcuterie board, which came from Livestock restaurant downstairs. It was okay but nothing memorable. Also, it seemed that Livestock didn't put any priority on Tchin Tchin orders. Normally, I would've been thrilled that we could converse without yelling, but with an empty bar, it seemed odd. I don't think I can recommend this establishment.

Anyways when you get to the top it's like being in another city (ok that's seriously what I think...) it's beautiful! There's an indoor section and an outdoor rooftop with greenery on the walls. Seating outside and inside is beautiful. We went around sunset, sat outside and there was a nice city feel outside with buildings all around. I loved it. When the sunset the lighting outside on the patio beautiful & relaxing. I don't drink but I love food and it was good, perfect pupus! We had the charcuterie board, fries, and a few others. Huge plus, they had mocktails!!! Service was good. The bartender was knowledgeable about the menu and drinks & gave recommendations. He even made hot water for my friends at the end. It wasn't crowded - like we were the only ones there. We stayed for awhile talking and it was comfortable and relaxing!!! I would've never known this beautiful place existed on Hotel Street. It's really an amazing relaxing experience. Parking: we parked in the municipal parking lot by Hawai'i Theatre.
