For Mother's Day we decided to try something new! Our first dining experience with Sera and their newly unveiled pet accommodations. They did not disappoint. First off, free 3 hour validated self or valet parking. How can you go wrong with that! We used valet, it essentially brings you into the back of the restaurant. So you'll need to walk through to check-in with the front. Staff was super friendly and attentive. Because we chose to bring our fur baby, we sat outdoors. They have a nice divider between seating and the sidewalk so you feel like there's some privacy, some detachment from the "outside world" haha. Now, take us to the menu, these prices are so extremely reasonable, it's so nice to go out for a sit down meal and not feel like we just broke the bank. We probably ate way too much food but we left so satisfied. Power Lunch Set for $30 you get a decent size mini salad or soup of the day, entree, and a soft drink. Don't want the full meal deal, just ordering entrees and appetizers is still such a great deal, ranging from $21-$28. Portions are perfect, we had a party of 6 and shared the hummus, crispy calamari, sera pancake, and shakshuka along with our own entrees and finishing off dessert with a delicious sorbet. Needless to say, this is hands down my new favorite spot. Craft cocktails, great food, free parking, and a great dining atmosphere. Had been meaning to try Sera for a while. Had been to the previous Mara restaurant at the same location . Tried it for pre-Mother's Day dinner. Great experience, great food. We tried the pork belly appetizer which was done perfectly crisp. For main, we tried the shrimp pasta with a side of mushrooms with chorizo, eggplant, which was also done perfectly. For dessert, we tried the Kuia chocolate, which was excellent. Our server, Bradi, was excellent, thoughtful, courteous, attentive, but not overbearing. Preface this review to say that Sera was not our first choice but selected because it was close in proximity to the other restaurant we were trying to dine at but could not because they were fully booked. Here is my story: This location always felt like a cafeteria; maybe because of the interior design and seating layout? Not sure but it did NOT feel like a restaurant truthfully. The menu as I've mentioned on my earlier review is clean and simple; 3-4 each of the salads, appetizers, entree and pizza toppings. This time we ordered the Caesar Salad, Hummus, Grilled Chicken and the Marguerita topping for the pizza . My obserations 1. Pizza? go to Papa Johns or Pizza Hut. Our pie dough was underdone and gummy (and it's a thin style pizza crust) 2. Chicken? Jury is out on that too 3. Caesar Salad? Good! Dressing was excellent 4. Naan Bread and Hummus? I've always pass by SERA on our walks to Ala Moana and finally got a chance to check it out during our weekend staycation at the Renaissance Hotel. Wow, such a beautiful, modern restaurant, the entrance and check in with hostess is on Kapiolani side, we entered via hotel side since we came from the lobby. The staff, hostess, wait service and buffet staff were all so friendly! We were going to do the continental breakfast but after see what was available, we changed our minds and opt for breakfast buffet. I like the options of the buffet, not too much and not too little, just right. I don't like over-eating and so hard for me to resist, hehe. I loved the Japanese section of the buffet, make your own miso soup with all the toppings, nicely grilled salmon and wow, Koshikari rice was available. Breakfast meats, eggs, mini pancakes, fruits, pastries for rest. We enjoyed our breakfast, I've never Japanese breakfast of miso soup and salmon for breakfast ever. The other half mentioned you don't like to eat lunch type of food for breakfast. haha. Need to start for when we our plans to travel to Japan, hehe. For lunch, ( no photos) we got the grilled fish sandwich with fries and that was very tasty, enjoyed in our room. Perfect-Packaged nicely with napkins, utensils, ketchup and even tiny Tabasco bottle of sauce, without even asking. Great breakfast spot in the Ala Moana area! Sera is located inside the Renaissance Honolulu Hotel & Spa, but it's open to the public too I only got to experience their breakfast, but I ended up coming back almost every day during my stay, which says a lot. They offer a $36 buffet with a wide variety of options: eggs, breakfast meats, smoked salmon, pancakes, juices, coffee, a selection of breads, and even rice and miso soup with toppings. Everything I tried was fresh and delicious. I also ordered from the a la carte menu a couple of times, the omelette was really good, but my favorite was the avocado toast. It's served on a croissant with two poached eggs, arugula, and parmesan cheese... so good and definitely something I kept craving. Their lattes are great as well, a perfect way to start the day. This was my first time dining at Sera and was genuinely impressed with the quality of the dishes. Our party of nine shared several appetizers and the most memorable dishes for me were the ahi tartar, crispy pork belly, and crispy calamari fritto misto. There were also a lot of compliments on the hummus and crudite. For dinner, I ordered the mary's duck breast and was blown away by how crispy the skin was. The interior was tender, juicy, and there was no gamey flavor at all. It did not come with a side dish so I did order potato puree to accompany it. My other family members had ordered the pasta and steak entrees and everyone seemed very content with their dishes. For dessert, we shared the clafoutis and the servers were nice enough to bring a dessert for our birthday celebrant. The clafoutis was unique and memorable from the range of flavors that you experience with every bite. I am a huge fan of citrus so I loved the lemon confit. Our bill totaled to about $850 so this definitely a place that you would go for a splurge. As with any fine dining establishment, I didn't expect massive portion sizes but was very impressed. The only thing to note is that the parking lot is complicated to exit and enter. To get to the restaurant, we had to walk down a stairwell to get to the lobby where the restaurant was located. To get back to your car, you have to take an elevator up to one of the parking floors and exit through out of the doors to the garage. This is something to keep in mind if you're unable to get down via stairs. I hope there is a more efficient way to accommodate those with disabilities. read more

We went on a Saturday night for dinner. Located inside Renaissance hotel next to Paris Baguette. They validate parking for free for 3 hours. Nice restaurant with a bar. The atmosphere felt calm, with dim lights. There were a couple of cons with our experience but other than that, the food is pretty good. We had the hummus & pita bread, calamari, and mushroom pasta. Came in for lunch and tried the koji marinated steak and the wagyu loco moco lunch specials -- both were SO worth it. The koji steak was incredibly tender with that perfect umami depth. You can really taste the marinade -- savory, slightly sweet, and super flavorful without being overpowering. Cooked perfectly and juicy all the way through. The wagyu loco moco was next level comfort food. The patty was rich and buttery (as wagyu should be), the gravy was silky and well-seasoned, and the egg tied everything together. Every bite was indulgent but balanced. Both lunch specials came with a fresh salad and a beverage, which made it feel like such a good value. The toasted bread crumbs on the Caesar salad made for easy eating versus large croutons. The Hawaii farm salad was also fresh, and all the ingredients blended well. The sakura/flower-shaped beets (I think) were a creative touch. The crispy pork belly lived up to its name as it was crispy! And the crispy calamari fritto misto had a great batter and was unlike other calamari appetizers, featuring a variety of fried seafood and pepper. In a word: fabulous! I read about Sera's happy hour (3-6, M-F) in Crave and immediately asked my friend if she wanted to meet up. We chose Wednesday because that's the day they have live music. Located in the Renaissance Hotel & Spa, Sera is a beautiful, modern Mediterranean restaurant. It used to be Mara, but it recently changed. It seems the menu is quite similar. Valet parking is free with validation which is a nice perk! We sat at the bar and ordered 2 glasses of sparkling Rose which were perfect. We also shared the burrat and pomegranate dip, the tzatiki dip, fresh pita, the lamb shepherds pie and the roasted eggplant. All were excellent. The eggplant was so good, we ordered it twice! Service was spot on: attentive but not hovering. Live music was such a nice addition. And in general, the restaurant is just beautiful to look at. read more

We stopped in for lunch on a stormy day, completely soaked. It was our first time here, and the place was pretty empty.3/20 Right from the start, the experience felt off. The woman at the front wasn't very welcoming and immediately asked for our name and phone number. When I said we didn't have a reservation, she just repeated that they needed it and kept staring at her computer. Not a great first impression, especially when we were standing there drenched. We ended up staying since it was pouring outside, but overall the service and food were just average. Several months ago, when my eldest brother-in-law planned a visit with several other relatives from Los Angeles to celebrate a milestone birthday and Thanksgiving Day in Hawai'i, he left his taste buds in my hands. I knew that he, as most of our relatives, gravitates toward Italian and Mediterranean cuisines for dinner, so this year I chose Sera since we had an excellent lunch there. I made the reservation through my handy OpenTable dining reservation app for seven people a month in advance. After providing directions to the restaurant and the parking garage, we shared our car with one relative, and the other four arrived in their rental car. This was the first time we had ever parked at the Renaissance Kapi'olani hotel/residential condominium, and we were shocked by the sharp turn up to a very steep incline into their garage. Still, the parking stalls were wide, and there were ample open spaces. After exiting the parking garage elevator, we noticed the RESTAURANT VALIDATION instructions on the parking validation kiosk, which instructed us to hold onto our parking tickets during dine-in, have the restaurant issue validation, and insert the validated tickets at the exit gate when leaving. Our table started with the Tasting Trio ($28, hummus, tzatziki, and burrata) and a Charcuterie Board ($38) to nosh on while sipping our wine, which my brother-in-law brought. Although we've dined at Sera for lunch, this was our first dinner experience. Our impressions of preparation, presentation, food quality, and value of the appetizers, entrées, side dishes, and desserts were phenomenal. The sommelier and server (Shalei) were attentive, friendly, and professional. Both my brother-in-law and I ordered the Lamb Tagine $55, which was authentically served in a tagine pot. The Morrocan braised and roasted lamb was tender, cooked to perfection, flavorful and not gamey-tasting. It's savory, slightly sweet and earthy sauce featured cumin, cinnamon (?), paprika, ginger (?), carrots, potatoes, marinated olives, and possibly honey or fruit. Atop the earthy stew was a sprinkling of the fragrant Egyptian, condiment, macadamia dukkah (macadamias, lemon zest, sesame seeds, and coriander). The stew was served with a bowl of turmeric rice. The stew was warming, comforting, and filling. My husband ordered the grilled Kona Kanpachi $45 which came with a zucchini and fennel salad, salsa verde, preserved lemon vinaigrette. The soft yet firm, succulent Kanpachi flakes were buttery-tasting. Its "simple" preparation showcased the fish steak. Other outstanding dishes were the Chicken Cacciatore $38 which had a beautifully balanced sauce of savoriness, acidity, earthiness, robustness. Also, the Grilled Spanish Octopus $33, Spaghetti Bolognese $32, and Braised Short Rib $50 all deserve mention as my relatives raved about them. We celebrated the "Birthday Boys" with frozen Greek yogurt as it was the least food coma causing dessert. I chose the sour cherries topping while others selected baklava crumbles or the olive oil and sea salt. "We're just getting started." Those were the words our waitress said as our large group remarked on the beautiful dishes displayed by the kitchen. How I love a good tease. I've been wanting to try Sera when it was originally Mara in May. Since then, I've enjoyed their special events room and main dining space. Sera is Mediterranean fare, elevated. Presentation is spot on for both food and beverage. Try a cocktail (or mocktail) and get ready to take a pic. Same with their trio of dip appetizer. Flavors are bold but balanced. The price can be tricky to nail down per person. For a Linguine Frutti di Mare, the price was around $40 but came with a great assortment of seafood including mussels, clams, lobster and shrimp. However, a New York Steak easily tipped into the $70 ball park. Dessert was delicious- pavlova, baklava, and the birds nest kunefe were all winners. Save room for these delights. We were staying at the Renaissance Honolulu and the spouse wanted a quick breakfast, so we ordered room service. Turns out, Sera, the hotel's main restaurant, supplies the food & beverage, not the hotel's kitchen like in most places. IN ROOM DINING MENU: A handful of pricey selections for B/L/D from 7am till 9pm. Nothing overnight. FOOD: Two Eggs Any Style The plate came with a choice of meat, in which he chose Portuguese sausage, also crispy potatoes and wheat toast. It's actually a hefty portion with the sides, but should be for the price. He also wanted a bowl of fruits which they did, off-menu. Unfortunately, there were no condiments (salt/pepper), no utensils and no napkins included. Luckily our room was equipped with silverware but of course not with condiments regardless of it having a kitchenette. We ordered this again the next day and asked for condiments, but still no utensils included again. Chicken Club Sandwich Not stated on the menu, this was served warm and toasted, with a big side of crispy fries. Comically enough, utensils came with this dish. SERVICE: Food was delivered in about 15 minutes in a takeout bag, not a room service tray. TIP: You cannot order off the In Room Dining menu inside the restaurant. I decided to check out Sera while in the Waikiki area on a work trip. It's located in the bottom of the Renaissance hotel - across from Ala Moana mall. We parked in the mall parking and walked over. The food was decent. I ordered the chicken breast and a salad. I also ordered a side of the asparagus but whatever seasoning they used, I was not a fan of. The waitress was nice and ended up comping that for me. I would stop in again to try something else but overall I wasn't super impressed with the food. read more

Dropped into SERA at the Renaissance Honolulu for a solo power lunch--rib eye, calamari fritti to start, and branzino to finish. Calamari was textbook perfect: light batter, crisp without grease, aioli on point for dipping. Rib eye came porcini-rubbed like their prime rib sig, juicy medium-rare with natural jus that punched umami hard--no need for extra steak sauce. Branzino nailed the Mediterranean vibe, moist grilled whole fish with herb-citrus lift that kept it fresh and not heavy. Room's sleek, service on point (shoutout free 3-hour valet), and portions hit right for the upscale price--worth it if you're optimizing hotel dining near Ala Moana. Lunch in Honolulu, Hawaii... My former co-worker wanted to get together and asked me where I wanted to meet. My reply: " Sera" Sera took the place of Mara on the ground level of the Renaissance Hotel on Kapiolani Boulevard. There's free validated self parking. The valet said to park in the "orange stalls". Thanks for the covered parking! Inside, the restaurant has simple, beautiful decor. It was bright and peaceful even though we watched busy traffic outside pass by. Our server was pleasant and calm. We reminded her about a couple of things... LOL! It was odd that the glass bottle of water that was left on our table had no ice. I guess the neck of the bottle prevented ice from being added to the water? Anyway, my friend liked the fact that she was offered a package for her takeout container. That was very thoughtful! I had the Sera Burger. I liked the Wagyu patty which had a slightly smokey flavor. The onion marmalade made the bun soggy, so I ended up focusing on just the patty, onions, tomato, cheese, and lettuce. The garlic aioli was a bit too mayonnaisey for me. Sat at the bar at SERA and still waited 45 minutes for drinks while guests who arrived after us were served first. Even once made, our drinks sat for 10 minutes, the ice was already melted. Someone then asked if we were "okay," which felt pretty audacious given the situation. On both visits, we were the only Black guests, and the difference in service was noticeable. The food! Soooooo good that I was satisfied with just eating there tasting trio ( $28) of tzatziki, hummus and burrata with beet puree. Their pita bread was addicting! We also got the roasted eggplant which was so delicious but the serving was 3 small pieces for $12! Our entrees took a while on a Saturday night but it was worth the wait. I had the seafood pasta ( $39)with 2 shrimps, 6 muscles and little clams without shell scattered throughout the sauce. The menu listed lobster but i could not location a single piece unless they chopped the pieces up so small and incorporated in the sauce. It was quite flavorful so I kinda didn't mind. My hubby ordered the lamb tangine ( $55) which was served with rice. This dish was a lamb stew and also sliced lamb that looked like it was cooked medium placed over. I do not like lamb but he said it was very delicious. We walked away spending $165 with plus a $30 tip! Would we ever come back? Maybe not this year but it also looks like a great place for ladies lunch. I couldn't resist stopping in for dinner again at Sera as I had a wonderful dining experience when I stopped in with friends a few months ago. Sera (formerly known as Mara) is located in the Renisance Honolulu hotel and spa. Reservations are highly recommend, especially if you have a large party. What I enjoyed at Sera: Tasting trio - hummus, tzatziki, and burrata served with hearth baked pita. Filet mignon with crispy parmesan potatoes - the steak was delish but those potatoes stole the show! Linguine frutti Di mare -i enjoyed the lobster, Kauai shrimp and mussels in the linguine! If you're a seafood lover, I would highly recommend ordering this dish. Cocktails- with so many delectable options, I'd have to say my favorite drink was the Homer. We attended a wine dinner pairing at Sera on Sunday, January 31st, hosted by Master Sommelier Chuck Furuya, and it was nothing short of exceptional. Every course and pairing was thoughtfully executed--truly some of the best pairings we've experienced. The food was outstanding, the wines were perfectly matched, and the generous repours made the evening feel both elevated and welcoming. Pricing was very reasonable for the quality, quantity, and overall experience. Huge thanks to Christian Page, the team at Lanai Grill, Sera Executive Chef Jeremy Shigekane, and the legend himself, Master Sommelier Chuck Furuya, for creating an unforgettable evening. Had a great experience at Sera! It's on the ground floor of the Renaissance Hotel on Kapiolani Blvd. There is valet parking or self parking and the restaurant validates up to 3 hours. Check in is through the hotel lobby to the left when you walk in. Beautiful restaurant! We went for lunch as soon as they opened. Comfortable seating, beautiful table setting with water glasses and carafe of water for refills left on the table. Delia was or server, she was so sweet and attentive and very helpful with describing the menu items. Our food came out quickly and everything was delicious! We ordered the Dips Tasting Trio which was kind of pricey but, it was worth it! It comes with 3 different dips and freshly made pita bread, when you run out of pita you can more, as much as you like at no extra charge to finish your dips. My husband ordered the Sera Burger and really enjoyed it, he only ate half, we were both full from the dips and pita. But, I did save room for dessert. I ordered the soft serve with Baklava and salt and olive oil, yummy! read more

We stayed at the Renaissance hotel for 5 days. Service in the morning not so good. Hostess at the front were not very friendly and service was very slow. I talked to one of the managers Derek, and they said they were transitioning. Hopefully, they will get things back up and running with good service next time we visited. Breakfast was basic and staff looked overwhelmed. I met and talked to Qi the new food and beverage manager. She was very understanding and accommodating . She just started last week and she's planning to make the dining experience great again. Dinner service was better! Clarissa was our server and she was amazing! Great service and recommendations for food! Very nice and was in tip of things! We ordered hummus dip trio, fried calamari, KEFALOGRAVIERA CHEESE SAGANAKI (fried cheese) and seafood paella. All of those dishes were delicious and full of flavor!!! The paella wasn't what we expected. This dish is Fusion with crunchy black rice and not your saffron rice you would expect. Not my favorite dish. We ended up with a sweet Greek frozen yogurt with baklava and honey. I recently saw their food post on Instagram and wanted to try here for someone's birthday. People say it used to be Mara's before. 3-stars for service and 5-stars for food. It's a classy restaurant with good quality food. My husband was happy with his filet mignon. He says it's one of the best he had and better than from a steak house. On the menu it says that it's from Nebraska. We enjoyed their refreshing oysters with light sauce. My entree was scallop served with purple mashed potatoe. Seafood Paella portion was big. This could be for 2 people. We also enjoyed Pistachio ice cream and Baklava. We also got Pavlova with Yuzu flavor but either we got the wrong dessert or couldn't taste no Yuzu. It was served with a hard, white sweet candy like thing. I think we could have without Pavlova. Dessert was kind of hard to order because there was no menu for it. You just had to listen to the server's description and decide. Speaking of which, our server was nice but not too attentive. Also, if you're celebrating a birthday or something this may not be a good place. Although I made a reservation through Open Table and specified for birthday celebration, there was no acknowledgement. Usually, a host or a server will ask at a classy restaurant. They did ask if we had any allergies however. On a different note, it's an open kitchen and we set right in front and so you could smell all the delicious dishes and watch hard working kitchen staff and the runners. Sera took the place of Mara in the Renaissance hotel near Ala moana. There is free valet parking with restaurant validation for up to 3 hours so not needing to find parking is a plus. The restaurant seems spacious with a resort vibe. The menu is a bit of a combination of Mediterranean and Italian. Our server was very friendly and attentive. We started with the the tasting trio and honestly that was the best this of the night. It contains pita breads with hummus, tzatziki and burrata. We followed that with the kanpachi, spaghetti and meatball, crispy potatoes and eggplant. Everything tasted fine and the portions are definitely for sharing. Given the price point though I'm not sure if it's really worth it. We'd probably come back just for the tasting trio and cocktails. read more

Very nice bar and service at this restaurant. Food not so impressed. First thing that bothered me is main dishes which without side dishes are not edible. Not sure how they create a dish that its just a peace of fish or meat on plate . I got short rib small cube of meat on plate with some greens on side . Meat I think was boiled cause had no sauce or flavor just meat. $50 for a small cube of meat . You will spend around $70 -80 for a single dish very pricy kinda not worth it. Sera is a great restaurant with a modern and colorful vibe, fantastic service, and delicious food in generous portions that can absolutely be shared. Our server Bobby provided great service. He was attentive, knowledgeable, and the menu recommendations he provided were killer. We started with the tasting trio. All the dips were delicious but my personal favorite was the light and bright tzatziki. Followed by the Grilled Spanish Octopus, which was so tender and bright. We also got the Hamachi which was citrusy, fresh, and so good! For our entrees we did the Seafood Paella and Kona Kampachi. The seafood in the Paella was cooked to perfection with all the flavors so nicely balance. The Kampachi was served whole with a most delicious salsa verde which we accompanied by the Creamy Potatoes. We finished off the meal with the Pavolva that was light and delicious without being too sweet. Between the beautiful ambiance, delicious food, and top service I would recommend Sera hands down. read more

Here it is... my absolute favorite restaurant in Honolulu! Everything was wonderful, the ambiance, music level and playlist choice, service, FOOD: taste, presentation, freshness, creativity, somelier wine service, oh my, I could go on and on. We went for girls night out dinner and were in such a great mood that we planned and booked a girls vacation that night! Now, I look for any reason to celebrate and always suggest Sera. read more
