Making tiki drinks is an art form as so much goes into them. We had a Navy Grog, King Kō Swizzle, and the non-alcoholic Sunset Passion. All of them were so delicious and it was fun to have the Navy Grog with the traditional ice cone! Attention to detail was obvious as was the quality of ingredients and rum! Review of bar only, they do serve food, we only ordered drinks. I love a good tiki bar, and Skull and Crown does it right, with a bit of a darker, pirate theme. There are skulls, and the music was right on theme, one song included "lightening". I made a reservation for Saturday evening, and they were completely full. The bar is fairly small, but this lead to more of an intimate feel. The drinks are pricy, but the same price as many bars in the area. Some friends ordered the crystal skull for two, which included the server lighting the drink on fire, a mini show with order. All of the drinks were excellent. This restaurant and bar is a full Tiki experience- complete with carefully selected artifacts and decor, treasures and Japanese fish floats and all the brick a Brack you expect to find in an adventure escapism themed bar. A beautiful cast mermaid behind the bar, tiki carvings and a ship wheel and other ocean things. It really creates a mood and atmosphere. There are lighting affects and a low track of midcentury instrumental music you would find at Trader Vic's or Don the Beachcomber. We ordered a few dishes off of the menu, and had two rounds of cocktails. The food was fantastic - every aspect was spot-on. We loved the drinks, and they were very balanced with great bright flavors and over the top garnishes and matching glassware. This little place is off the beaten tourist path in Chinatown, but has the coolest vibes of any tiki bar I've been to in island. The decor is done right. They hit all the details of spooky and fun. We happened upon this establishment while talking a stroll through Chinatown, on Hotel Street. We were looking for somewhere to grab some after dinner drinks & dessert. Don't judge this establishment by the storefront, as you'll need to walk in to really see how they themed the decor with their name. From the sound of storms to the skulls on posts and ship paraphernalia, it was a constant reminder as to where you were. Fun!! The establishment was clean--restroom is always the tell-all. Customer service was great--we never had to wave anyone down for another drink, as someone was always coming by to check in on us. Remember this drink: Crystal Skull (Clarified Zombie) Yum! It wasn't what we were expecting--let's say that we were pleasantly surprised! This drink is presented beautifully--loved the branded ice cube--and the taste and flavors are just smooth & so enjoyable! Definitely a must-try! Skull & Crown Trading Co. is a tiki bar located in the Chinatown area of Honolulu. We made reservations but it was pretty empty on a Wednesday night. The crystal skull ($20) was a clarified drink and was spice forward (mostly cinnamon) but easy to drink. The jaded jungle ($18) was sweet, light, and refreshing. The skull and crown ($40) is their namesake drink that serves two and it was good with hints of absinthe. The dagger mai tai ($20) is a collaboration with Smuggler's Cove in San Francisco consisting of a secret recipe but had fruity berry notes on the front and was spirit-forward on the back. A lot of our drinks had the cinnamon sprinkle over top to give a fire show. There was decor everywhere including a giant woman statue in the middle looking up. Throughout our time here the lights went in and out and spooky music would come on, adding to the ambiance. read more

Tiki bar without being too kitschy and tacky is a hard line to walk but Skull & Crown does it perfectly. As a Hawaiian, a tiki bar can feel a bit inauthentic and weird to me but I love the decor here! The whole spot is a vibe, from the dark and moody inside to their outdoor patio in the back. Located in Honolulu's chinatown, you might walk pass this spot without knowing the whole new world in this hole-in-the-wall. The drinks are everything that you could want and more in a tiki bar. The fire theatrics, tiki cups, fruit and flower garnishes, and tropical flavors (plus some pretty heavy pours). I will not accept any sugary drink slander when it comes to tiki bars- that's what it's all about! I came in with a group of 7 and we all got different drinks, so I got to try sips of the: - lapu lapu the pandan palm syrup paired with lilikoi was so good! - Ube bae, this was a favorite among everyone in the group! It's like a dessert cocktail - Siren, I'm not sure if it's on the menu but when I mentioned that I like mezcal, they brought out this drink with mezcal and midori. This was my favorite of the night but I'm bias because I just love mezcal. - koloa colada, when at a tiki bar you gotta get some sort of pina colada- am i right?! - pua ula ula with coconut, pineapple, and li hing, some of my favorite island flavors! - awa awa mai tai, there are a few different mai tais on the menu but this one has lilikoi in it! So ono! Don't forget about the food! We got a few different things for the table: -Lettuce wraps with this garlic pork and crispy shallots, which can also be made vegan. -Beef skewers smothered in chimichurri, perfect bite to go with any and all drinks. The service here is amazing, shout out to Tina and Christopher. I would recommend making a reservation, I've gotten lucky walking in a few times but have also been turned away because they do get fully booked on busy nights. Yes.. it's Chinatown so parking can be tough but you can get lucky with street parking or there are municipal lots that are really cheap (some only accept cash, so keep that in mind). read more

Tina was so patient with us as we went basically line by line down the menu. We all started with different drinks but the star of the show, at least for me, was the Headhunter. The food was also divine! The Ahi Katsu and Nacho Rangoon were DELICIOUS! In fact, my mouth is watering even thinking about it. I also have a pineapple allergy and they were so great to make the food safe for me to eat; I had zero issues. I can't say I begin to understand the levels because I am no craft bartender but I definitely enjoy sipping on these libations and they pack a punch. The food is so inventive and Laotion which is not something I have had before this restaurant. I love all of the dishes I have had the pleasure of trying. The Lucky Lantern Chicken, the Crab Rangoon Nachos, the Shrimp Skewers, the Shrimp Ceviche, the smashed potatoes of which I cannot remember the name and have such a refreshing taste. The food is for sharing and plentiful per plate. On average when I eat here I leave stuffed and haven't made it to dessert. One day I hope to mention how that part of the menu tastes. From the street, this restaurant does not look like much. Upon entry, however, you are transported to a venue that reminds you of the Pirates of Caribbean but Hawaii. I do not rave this much about decor, but Skull & Crown Trading is unique. The food and drinks are just as good as the decor. Been here before a few years ago, thought we would come back on our recent trip to the island. We made a reservation for 10:30 PM and arrived at 10:40 PM -- yes, a little late, but what's frustrating is that last call was also at 10:30 PM. If the bar stops serving at that time, why even allow reservations that late? It makes no sense to accept bookings when guests won't be able to order anything. The staff wasn't rude, but the whole setup felt poorly managed and misleading. Definitely not the kind of experience you'd expect when you plan ahead and make a reservation. read more

We came on a Friday night post-dinner so it was quite packed, but the staff made do and had us sit by the piano until a table opened up. We came here as a recommendation from a friend. The location is not great in downtown Chinatown. We got towed after 30 minutes and the signage was not marked nor was the sidewalk painted. A $200 bill plus the dinner... The inside has a unique ambiance. It's dark and Hawaiian but underwater type theme. It was cute but small. We sat at a long table with a booth on one end and a chair on the other. It was nice and tight with our neighbors. We had the rum flight, which was unique and yummy. The presentation was beautiful on a barrel piece. The rums were Hawaiian and unique. Our waiter got our original drink wrong after we specified which one. We ended up keeping the wrong one and getting the original one we ordered. He did not offer to take off the mess up off our tab. The pain killer and the crystal skull were both great drinks! The crystal skull was dark liquor but sweet and also subtle. The ceviche to start was the best thing we ordered all night. It was a different ceviche than what I'm used to. It had more of a thicker coconut base but it was absolutely delectable and the shrimp chips paired with it were fluffy and the perfect touch. For dinner I had the noddles, which I thought were pretty good. I think they could have been a little spicier. However, I do think the shrimp portion was large and accurate for the pricing. My husband had the ribs and while the meat fell off the bone, it lacked sufficient flavor. Everything is ala carte. Portion sizes are decent. Probably would not revisit. read more

Came to Skull & Crown with friends on a recent trip to Honolulu. The outdoor seating area (shared with neighbor restaurants) is one of the things that stood out - kind of felt like a night market. Very cool! The drinks were great and potent. No watered down beverages here. For food, we ordered the kalbi, nachos rangoon, potato nanban, misoyaki eggplant and gingerbread pudding. The bread pudding and potato nanban really shined - we expected something different from the description of nachos rangoon since we love crab rangoon. In any case, the food was really solid. Service was friendly and attentive, and for 3 people the total came out to $183 including tip, or about $61 per person for drinks, entree and sides and a dessert. We ordered the nachos Rangoon and lucky lantern chicken. The nachos were soooo good!!! Swordfish nachos for $16?!? Honestly this alone made it worth it. Tiki drinks were a solid price compared to main Waikiki area. And i like that the owners are so protective of their dagger Mai tai ingredients that even the staff don't know what's in it. read more
