    Garlic Side Style Fried Chicken

Came here for a holiday party my coworkers and I set up. We got their private room off to the side, which has a min spend of ~$1000 before taxes and tip. The waitress was very accommodating , since we had a large group we were initially offering to organize and take the orders ourselves and then one person would pass the entire order to the waitress. She said to avoid the hassle for both of us, she could just take the order from individuals. After that it was pretty much smooth sailing. We just ordered the colin's classic ($341 for 8-10 ppl) two times, enough to feed our entire party (with PLENATY of leftovers). I personally say that the garlic chicken and the kalbi were both a hit. The garlic chicken was crunchy and flavorful. The kalbi was super tender and flavorful as well. One miss I would say was the pan fried pork chops, I felt like they were just a bit dry and not the most enjoyable to eat. I also got their chocolate peanut butter crunch to go (recommended by waitress), it was good, tastes like reese almost. I would definitely recommend coming here if you have a large party, I would be more on the fence on getting the room but that's dependent on your budget.

Da original is still da best! I CRAVE the food here, and SSI is quickly becoming my first stop on my first night when visiting Honolulu. The fried chicken, pork chops, and fried rice are to DIE for. Family style portions are enormous--bring friends or family. I love SSI and everything about it. Wish I could visit more often than once a year. Aloha!

Side Street is and will always be one of our favorite spots in Honolulu. The prices really match the portions, super generous. For 4 people, we ordered the pork chops, spicy chicken (it's not spicy), fried rice, and mac salad - and we brought home leftovers! The spicy chicken is my favorite, no idea how they get it so tender and crispy and flavorful. The fried rice is very nostalgic, and I love their mac salad. Parking can be tough. Valet is $8, or there are QR scan lots and garages nearby, or you can Lyft if you're visiting. Staff are always so warm and welcoming, and we had no trouble getting seated at 6pm on a Tuesday. For 4 people with beers and 4 dishes, the total came out to around $140.

Visit 09/25 In Honolulu for a short visit and my Ohana suggested we meet up here. In my Cuz's words "It's been a while but I heard that Side Street have upped their game." Can't say what it was like before myself but "upped their game" was an understatement. This was just a full on feast of Hawaiian comfort food. Picture being at the family table with loved ones laughing it up but in a sports bar. Ironically we saw an SD friend who was also in town and their Ohana said this was the place to try as well. Can't argue locals ever. As we were a large group my Cuz suggested we do the price fixed menu which included all of what we were eyeing anyways. Star of the show for me are the pork chops. I...wow...just perfect. Juicy. Crisp coating. Flavor packed. Similarity their Signature Garlic Chicken is fried to perfection and just loved how each bite was a combination of crunchy shell and juicy meat. Some of the best fried chicken I have had. Another incredible hit was their take on Kalbi which was actually boneless which after a flight I kinda appreciate not having to work for my food lol. Tender beef cuts. The fried rice is perfect. Fluffy not sticky. Well seasoned and a perfect distribution of char siu, bacon, Portuguese sausage, peas, and green onions. Their Farmer's Salad is a meal unto itself packed with bay shrimp, avocado, capers, grape tomato, and onions. Gently tossed in a red wine vinaigrette. Our server was friendly and fairly attentive despite handling several large parties. Parking is tricky. There is a paid lot but they have a valet for only $7 cash. Do the valet. A super highly recommended stop when you're in Honolulu.

This place is Da'kine!!! When we used to live out here we used to go here all the time. We left 6 years ago and came back for Xmas and was so happy this place hasn't changed! The fried rice, fried pork chops and special chicken is the holy trinity! Must get! The service is always on point and friendly. You can't go wrong with this place if you want some local food.

We had a Pau Hana Farewell for a fellow colleague that was recently let go... sad situation but what a great place for a farewell... haven't been here in a long time and of course wasn't disappointed.

Side Street Inn is a really good place especially if you have larger groups. It's a really big space inside and you can make a reservation. I went with my family and we made a same day reservation by calling. The portion sizes here are really big and made for sharing. We ordered before 6pm and got happy hour pricing which was pretty much 20% off most of what we ordered. There's a giant parking garage across from the restaurant or you can valet park for $7. Staff: Nice (5/5) Sanitation status: Really clean (5/5) Garlic Fries (4/5) I think the garlic fries were good but could've used a little bit more flavor. It was a mountain of fries though and I feel like it wasn't really a shoestring fry cause it wasn't super skinny. Garlic edamame (4/5) This was pretty simple, I feel like there's no big way to spice it up. You can pretty much expect the flavor. Bone in Kalbi (5/5) Definitely a table favorite. The ribs were really thick cut and juicy. It had that sweet and salty flavor you really want to look for in a Kalbi. I would definitely order this again next time I visit. Fried Chicken Gizzards (3.5/5) I'm not a big gizzard fan but it was crispy. I thought it was on the tougher side and I prefer when you can chew through it a little easier. It came with this spicy powder to dip in if you would like. Lilikoi BBQ Ribs (4/5) I thought the ribs were okay, the flavor of the BBQ was there but some ribs were lacking on the meat on the bones. It had a nice little char almost on it which added to the flavor profile. Pulehu Short Rib (4.5/5) If you're looking for more of a steak I would order this. I was expecting something a little different than what we got but it was good. I would definitely say it could've used a little more seasoning but if you're looking for a basic steak then this hits all the marks. Signature Fried Rice (5/5) This was amazing, it was truly different from any other fried rice I've had before. The rice was really soft and they use concentrated bonito to give their fried rice more depth in flavor which I enjoyed. It had a good mix of proteins and was more than enough for a bunch of people. Signature Garlic Chicken (5/5) This was one of the star dishes for me here. The chicken was bonesless thighs which is already my favorite part of the chicken. They coat it in a sweet garlicky sauce that just added to it. The skin was super crispy. This dish did take the longest for us to receive so if you're thinking about it then I would order it earlier. Signature Pan Fried Pork Chops (4/5) I thought these were fried really well. I think in all we got about 3 pork chops total. It looked really good when they brough it out but I felt like it was on the drier side. I also though it could've used a little bit more seasoning but if you're craving a crispy pork chop I would reccomend.

This is our second time in two weeks being here since we were always with a party of people who wanted to try the food here since it's been so long for all of since we've been here. Parking was not a problem as we all did valet parking for $7...worth it to not deal with the stress. The inside has expanded and has more room since last time we were here. We sat at 6 and was told we have a max of 2 hours there with our group of 9. No problem I guess except the service from what we remembered before has really gone down on BOTH occasions we were here. Our plates of food were served and we asked for extra serving utensils for most of them, which is kind of important being that it's family style dining. It took our server forever to come back and all she had to offer were some chopsticks. Everyone's drinks were almost always empty, and she just wasn't personable with us at all even though we were all so extra nice to her. If gratuity wasn't included I surely wouldn't have left one as big as our bill commanded! The food was good for the most part. Our favorite dishes were ordered but the fried pork chop just wasn't what it used to be. It was literally a blond fried pork chop with no seasoning and was $32 and came with ketchup. We also got the signature garlic chicken ($27), Chinese chicken salad large ($22.50), sizzling boneless kalbi that just said MP so who knows how much that was, crispy skin roast pork ($20) bland and served with ketchup....guess they love this condiment here, crispy fried chicken gizzards ($19) served with YOU GUESSED IT! Ketchup lol and Da Works fried rice which is basically Kim chee fried rice at $27. We also tried their desserts even after all of that and I shared the chocolate peanut butter crunch ($14) Ala mode with my son, and the other dish some people got were the baked haupia puffs ($14) Ala mode which was haupia wrapped in phyllo dough. All in all an average night out with no so great service, food that was okay, and company that made up for it being we were celebrating my husbands birthday. The prices are big and it shows in the portions, but like I said I wouldn't have left much of a gratuitous tip if we had control over it for the service. Like she knew she was gonna get tipped either way and didn't give two cares about our party or the lack of quality of service.

This place is delicious! A friend recommended it. They come here every time they come to Hawaii. The place is very busy. The staff is friendly and constantly moving around, serving tables and helping customers. The place is simple but the food is amazing. It's big and lighting is bright. We ordered the family platter options with signature fried rice. We had them add lop cheung. Signature is on the spot. Never had fried rice so tasty, the grains weren't clumpy or stick together. Then had edamame, fried chicken, bulgogi beef on bone, farmer salad and pork chops. We had plenty of leftovers. We ordered take out another night and finished it all.

The food very very good. My favorite was the garlic chicken and the furikake fish. The service was great and fast. We ordered and the food started to come out at a great pace. Very friendly and very busy night. Here for a Christmas dinner with family, love was in the air. Great environment all the staff was very friendly and gracious despite working on Christmas Day.

Great local family style dining in the heart of Honolulu (albeit in a pretty run-down area). Parking is limited, but they offer valet service for $7. I've been to the Kapahulu location many times, but this is only my second time at this location; the first time was over 12 years ago. It's been renovated and looks clean and modern inside with a spacious open seating area so tables can be rearranged to accommodate the large groups that frequent here. We were here for an early Father's Day dinner with my son-in-law's family, with 12 of us. The portions are big and designed for groups to share, unless you have a huge appetite, so it was great for our family dinner. The food is consistent and good, with service to match. It did take a while for some dishes to come out since the kitchen was probably slammed from all the parties and groups. We enjoyed the edamame, Farmers salad, Hiyayakko (cold tofu), their signature fried pork chops and fried chicken, SS works fried rice, boneless kalbi, and the Catch of the Day, which was a Basa (Asian catfish) filets in hot oil, ginger, and Chinese parsley. Needless to say, we finished it all, along with a second order of the kalbi. The night went well, and everyone enjoyed the food, the service and the company. SSI is definitely a diamond in the rough.

When you come here to eat, be sure to come hungry and with a big group. The portions here are HUGE. I'm not exaggerating. lol the service here was great and everyone was super nice. Signature fried rice: 3/5, Huge serving but I found the rice to be a little dry! I thought the kimchi rice was better. Pork chops: 4/5, highly recommend this dish. The pork chop is super crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The cut the pork chop into pieces so it's easier to eat and share. Sizzling boneless Kalbi: 5/5, besides the chicken, it was probably one of my favorite dishes. It was insanely tender. Flavor was good and had a nice char. Bone in kalbi: 2.5/ 5, for some reason, this one didn't taste as good to me. The flavor was the same as the boneless but it was tougher. I found myself chewing for a long time. I would opt for the boneless again. Kimchi fried rice: 4/5, I loved the flavor of the rice. It was a little spicy but definitely tolerable if you can handle mild spice. Garlic chicken: 5/5, this was amazing. I'm so sad because this was the only photo I took but it's because it was so good. I'm sad that they served it towards the end of the meal because I was so full but I still tried some. I believe they use pieces of boneless chicken thighs. The sauce was so flavorful but it didn't make the batter soggy. Fried fish: 4/5, can't go wrong with fried fish. It had a light batter as well and the fish was not over cooked.

Omg! This local spot is ono!! IYKYK. The staff was overwhelmingly excited to see us. We chose a group style dining for dinner and it was almost 1 of everything for a group of 12ish for 300. Deal! The garlic chicken was fire! Fried rice is to die for. If your on island, dont sleep on this one folks!!

Ask the Community - Side Street Inn

    Are kids allowed to?

Yes! When we were there, they were large groups of families, all eating, and they included children. The servings are huge. Great for families.!!

Is valet parking still available? If so, what is the cost?

It was available earlier this year , not sure of the price. There is a parking garage across the street.

    Where is patking?

Side street parking in and around the neighborhood - we actually walked over so didn't have to worry about parking

    Do they take reservations?

You definitely need to get a reservation. I have been turned away as a walk-in because there isn't a table available for hours. The food is well worth the time to make reservation.

Do you have a party room to accommodate a medium size group about 30 people? Which location is better for this size of group?

    Yes they do

Does Side Street Inn Kopaka St put MSG in their food? I have an MSG allergy/intolerance (pounding headache 4 to 5 hours after eating MSG).

U should always ask or call before you go

Do you have gluten free dishes?

Yes, they have a fresh catch, bunch of grilled meats, just tell them to hold the soy sauce/shoyu on some if their sauces and fried rice dishes to be gluten free

Not quite sure I understand the take out procedure? Two instances (on a Wednesday last month and today (thurs)) I have tried calling for take out but was told that take out orders weren't being taken; the website shows take-out hours.

They're probably focusing on dine in customers now. Try the Kapahulu location.

Anyone know when the Hopaka Street location will reopen after renovations?

Hopaka location is currently open and conducting business with Covid safety procedures

How much is the corkage fee?

    Do you have karaoke?

No, the place has no dining area

    Do they serve breakfast?

No, they don't open till after lunch. The closest thing to breakfast they have would probably be their fried rice.

What's the best thing at side street in?

    Fried chicken and fried rice

Aloha! My wife has a gluten allergy, I wanted to know what's gluten free on your menu other than salads?

Fried rice, boneless kalbi beef, fries, poke, rib eye steak, ice cream, steamed snapper, pesto crusted ahi, steamed clams

If you're visiting Hawaii with a big group, 100% recommend taking them here…read more We initially were a party of 16, and showed up without a reservation at 6pm on a Saturday. The staff was super nice about it and was able to accommodate us, with only a small request that we be out by 8pm since there was another big party with a reservation coming in. Absolutely reasonable. They sat us right away at three large tables, which gave us plenty of space for food and didn't force us to sit super close together. Menus, waters, plates, napkins, and forks were all brought out immediately, and our waiter was quick to take our order. We started with the prix fixe menu for 8-10 guests and were going to add other items à la carte, but a handful of our group accidentally went to the other Side Street location (make sure your group is all on the same page), so what we ordered ended up being more than enough. We left stuffed and with 5 boxes of food still. Edamame was nice and steamy, and large enough to easily pop the beans out with your mouth. Wish there was a bit more salt though. The farmer's salad had everything going on from citrusy to salty to crispy. Avocado had a little bit of oxidation but the capers, dressing and potato curls provided plenty of reasons to overlook it. The fried rice came in a hefty portion, with sizable pieces of bacon and sausage. The chicken I didn't realize was boneless based on the shape of the deep fry, but it was nice to freely bite into it without worrying about hitting anything with my teeth. Probably a bit too much on fried bits but still good. Pork chops had a better meat to crisp ratio in my opinion, as well as juiciness. They even came with ketchup on the side, which I love as a pairing but don't see much of at restaurants. My favorite meat item was definitely the sizzling boneless kalbi. The presentation on the sizzling plate with a side of kimchi was spectacular, and the meat was full of flavor. We also ordered yakisoba, which wasn't part of the prix fixe. Tasted good but nothing past standard expectations. We let the waiter know we had a 30th birthday at the table, and they brought a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream with a candle, and did a decent job getting the whole room to participate in the singing. It could also be the type of crowd this place attracts, since it seemed that everyone was so friendly and approachable. Thanks to the quick and consistent service, we were out in a little over an hour with no complaints.
