5,000,000 Stars - Jeff the Divine Pourer of Honolulu Tavern If Zeus stepped down from Olympus, traded in his lightning bolt for a cocktail shaker, and opened a dive bar in Honolulu, he would still fall short of the sheer majesty that is Jeff the Bartender. I walked into Honolulu Tavern expecting a beer and maybe a game of pool. I walked out a changed human being, spiritually reborn through the transcendent wizardry of Jeff's drink-making abilities. The man didn't just pour me a Mai Tai -- he summoned it from another dimension using ancient Polynesian incantations and possibly a portal beneath the bar. Jeff doesn't make drinks. He crafts liquid experiences. I ordered a Jack and Coke. He gave me an elixir so powerful I briefly remembered all my past lives and cried openly at the bar. Jeff handed me a napkin without breaking eye contact. "Let it out," he said, in a voice smoother than the whiskey he poured. He flips bottles like he's auditioning for a Cirque du Soleil fire show. He garnishes with flair, zest, and possibly dark sorcery. He doesn't just serve drinks -- he blesses them. At one point, someone tried to order a vodka cranberry. Jeff leaned in and whispered, "I can do better." Moments later, he slid a drink across the bar that tasted like a sunset riding a unicorn across Waikiki Beach. Also -- and I cannot stress this enough -- Jeff remembered everyone's name, their favorite drink, and gave unsolicited but eerily accurate life advice. One sip of his signature cocktail and my taxes filed themselves, my skin cleared, and I received a text from my ex apologizing for everything. In conclusion: Jeff is not a bartender. He is a mixological prophet. A liquid shaman. A cocktail demigod. If you die before experiencing a drink from Jeff, you've wasted your one precious life. Mahalo, Jeff. Mahalo for EVERYTHING

If you're looking for a dive bar - look no further! Our bartender was awesome - and gave me a hot dog with my beer -- no extra charge! :-) Don't come here looking for umbrellas in your drinks - or anything fancy really. Come to hang w some locals and get relatively inexpensive booze...

This is quite possibly the greatest Dive Bar on planet earth! Such an eclectic mix of locals and longtime mainlander transplants. It's a real taste of gritty, no frills, no bs Honolulu. Bar staff are amazing, friendly and full of great stories.

Honolulu Tavern is a small dive bar in the Waikiki area near the International Market Place mall. It's in the same building the Hawaiian King hotel and is known to be one of the last dive bars in the Waikiki area surrounded by expensive hotel bars. The front of the bar contained mostly bar counter seating with a couple tables but if you go to the back where the restrooms were, there was a lot more space and tables. The well drinks were about $4 each and they sold Hawaiian ice teas for $7 which were sweet from all the pineapple juice. It was a chill hole-in-the-wall spot and my bartender Vivian was super cool!

    Honolulu Tavern delight.

I LOVE this dive bar in Honolulu. I'm a bit of a margarita snob, and just had one of the most delightful house margaritas I've had in years. Not some premixed bland bottled version, but a hand-made true margarita. Great service, great atmosphere, great drinks. I highly recommend visiting this wonderful hole-in-the-wall gem in Waikiki.

Would you like to meet friendly locals and get drunk for little money? This is THE PLACE! Bonus if John is your bartender

The bartender was extremely rude he wanted us to sit on the bar but it's 4 of us and it's easier to talk if we are on a table the bar was empty and we kindly asked if we can sit on the table instead he was mad after that he was very rude he gave us very bad drinks and before we left he asked us to hand him all the empty glasses... Not recommended at all

Absolutely the best bar in town hands down! Great space to relax and have a good time. Jeff makes the most amazing Blue Hawaii cocktails in wakiki! A must stop place during your visit!

We were seated relatively quickly, outside, at a long picnic table. No problems there. But then... Our server (Andrew, I think that's his name...it was on the receipt but we literally never saw him after he took our order and then brought the bill), really didn't want any small talk at all. He seemed a bit annoyed when my fiancé asked about their own brews....almost like it would've been easier for him to just order Coors or something. You're a brewing company...people are going to have questions. All 4 of us ordered something different- Sicilian pepperoni pizza, some type of burger, pulled pork loaded fries, and a macadamia nut chicken salad. Food was average...you can tell they cater to tourists.. Our server never checked on us. He took our order, a runner brought the food out, and the next time he came to the table was with a bill. I actually had to flag down another service so we could cash out. I have so much respect for people working in the service industry. It's a hard job. You deal with people all the time and some of them are downright jerks. We weren't jerks. We were regular, nice customers. It takes a lot for me to not tip anywhere between 20-25%. Sadly, this was one of those times. 2 stars

The staff was super nice about it and was able to accommodate us, with only a small request that we be out by 8pm since there was another big party with a reservation coming in. Absolutely reasonable. They sat us right away at three large tables, which gave us plenty of space for food and didn't force us to sit super close together. Menus, waters, plates, napkins, and forks were all brought out immediately, and our waiter was quick to take our order. We started with the prix fixe menu for 8-10 guests and were going to add other items à la carte, but a handful of our group accidentally went to the other Side Street location (make sure your group is all on the same page), so what we ordered ended up being more than enough. We left stuffed and with 5 boxes of food still. Edamame was nice and steamy, and large enough to easily pop the beans out with your mouth. Wish there was a bit more salt though. The farmer's salad had everything going on from citrusy to salty to crispy. Avocado had a little bit of oxidation but the capers, dressing and potato curls provided plenty of reasons to overlook it. The fried rice came in a hefty portion, with sizable pieces of bacon and sausage. The chicken I didn't realize was boneless based on the shape of the deep fry, but it was nice to freely bite into it without worrying about hitting anything with my teeth. Probably a bit too much on fried bits but still good. Pork chops had a better meat to crisp ratio in my opinion, as well as juiciness. They even came with ketchup on the side, which I love as a pairing but don't see much of at restaurants. My favorite meat item was definitely the sizzling boneless kalbi. The presentation on the sizzling plate with a side of kimchi was spectacular, and the meat was full of flavor. We also ordered yakisoba, which wasn't part of the prix fixe. Tasted good but nothing past standard expectations. We let the waiter know we had a 30th birthday at the table, and they brought a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream with a candle, and did a decent job getting the whole room to participate in the singing. It could also be the type of crowd this place attracts, since it seemed that everyone was so friendly and approachable. Thanks to the quick and consistent service, we were out in a little over an hour with no complaints.
