Hale Vietnam is my go to dinner spot prior to most shows at Diamond Head Theater due to its proximity to the venue and its yummy Vietnamese comfort food. Most nights, there isn't much of a wait, but I also topically get there by 5:30pm for the 7pm showings at DHT. My go to item is the oxtail pho. The broth is delicious and unlike many other oxtail pho places, not too fatty. The price has gone up quite a bit ($28.95 as of last night), but I suppose that is the cost of inflation. I used to frequent this restaurant many years ago, then took a break and visited other Vietnamese restaurants. I've been back twice now in the past couple of months and it's still just as good as I remember from before. I normally order the pho, but this time I ordered their Imperial rolls. I like how it's made with the rice paper, which makes it different from other places. It was very filling and I took half home. We were seated right away and service was quick. We got our food within about 5-10 min of ordering. My only minor complaint would be how close the tables are to each other. I could hear the other people's conversations very clearly, and I'm sure they could hear ours too - lol - so just be aware of that. Fresh food, quality pho and clean atmosphere! Only downside was the lengthy wait time. Customer service is good, as the staff are very upbeat and friendly. Only issue is they were not as attentive at times, and the wait time for food was surprisingly long. My boyfriend and I ordered the imperial rolls, which took close to 30 min to arrive at our table. Our bowls of pho took maybe 20 min afterwards. We are patient customers, but felt surprised by the lack of checking-in at our table and the lengthy waits. Customers who were seated after us got their food in 10-15 min time. Slightly disappointing but I never regret supporting local. The imperial rolls were nice and fresh. The produce was plentiful and the ingredients appeared high quality. I personally wish the spring roll wrappers were different, but understand the appeal of the fried rice paper. Tonight my nephew wanted to take me out for dinner . He suggested Hale Vietnam located next door to Duk Kee in Kaimuki 12th Ave . He was raving about their stuffed chicken wings for weeks so finally I said ok let's go . To my surprise it was really good very crispy and lots of stuffing with chicken and vermicelli noodles . 40 years... This restaurant has been in this location since the 80s! Our waitress has worked here for 22 years and was here again on another tremendously busy evening. It's always busy here... You write your name on the paper board near the door and get seated by one of the waitresses when a table opens up. The food is always very good here. I think they make the best spring rolls of anywhere on the island! A mark of a good bowl of pho is clear soup... pass on the murky type of soup you find in some Vietnamese restaurants. Came here on a Friday night without reservations, and we were immediately seated. I've heard good things about this restaurant and was excited to give it a try. I got the small brisket pho, and even the small size was a hefty portion. The brisket was soft, noodles were a good texture, and the broth was flavorful and not overly salty. Awesome. Really large place, much larger than it looks from the outside. Party of four for dinner on a weekday evening. Was somewhat busy. Their selection is quite large. I got the BBQ Pork noodles (vermicelli). It was fantastic. The rest of my family was equally pleased. The waitstaff was pretty busy but they did manage to take our orders, get our food to us, and generally serve us all very well. This is one of my pho go-to's, when I'm in the area and don't feel like going into Chinatown. The pho broth has always been a hit, and never needed to be doctored with the usual Hoisin and Sriracha... not for me anyway. The noodles were bouncy and there just enough steak slices to balance the meal, and I was able to finish my large bowl, full and satisfied. I decided to splurge and ordered these boneless chicken wings, that was stuffed with ground pork too and that was fried goodness. The tart fish sauce brought a brightness to each crunchy and savory bite. I only come here after I get paid, though... the prices are a bit steep considering what other places charge. Work lunch Wednesday was enjoyed at Hale Vietnam. A hole in the wall that is quite unappealing from the outside but spacious and bustling on the inside. Our party of 6 was seated immediately right before 12. I had been eyeing the menu since my recent calorie deficit diet required well...not my usual cold vermicelli noodle dish with imperial rolls and lemongrass chicken. I found a Vietnamese sour soup section that sounded delicious and low calorie but there was only one picture of the chicken sour soup from 13 years ago. I couldn't tell what was in it and the menu mentioned pretty normal stuff so I decided to go with the vegetarian sour soup. When I got my dish it was the chicken version which wasn't a bad thing I just didn't eat any of the chicken. During the meal I kept trying to figure out what this strange green vegetable was that I have never had. It was soft but not green squash soft, but also spongy. I finished as much as I could but ended up taking a full container home. The flavor was a perfect sour, it was definitely piping hot, and there was a soft licorice taste (possibly some herb). Very delicious! I asked the waitress what that vegetable was and she said "bac ha" or taro stem. It's also know as elephant ear stem. The dish was special and honestly nothing I have ever had. I also want to be clear- I'm born and raised here and come from an Asian family, so I understand different service styles. This wasn't that. This was just rude. Our server avoided eye contact, seemed judgmental when taking our order, never checked on us, and had a bad attitude when we asked for the check. When I asked for a container and we left part of the garden roll (the pork was very dry), she responded, "You don't want this???" in a rude tone. She also threw away my pho toppings before I could ask to take them to go. Tried here for the first time for lunch and it was okay. Food and drinks were good but very overpriced for the size of the plates and they charge you extra for rice. The fried egg rolls were really tasty and everything else was standard. Service was meh by one person who was impatient and another one who was friendly. With a large group they charge you 18-20% as I recall seeing on the menu. No biggie and this is standard, but they hand wrote down the tip for me. Just put down the exact amount on the menu that you're going to automatically charge to avoid confusion. FYI they also charge you 3% for using a credit card. What made it even more frustrating was that she seemed friendly and attentive to other customers, but not to our group. A few examples: * Before ordering, we were trying to remember the name of a menu item and asked her for help. She simply walked away without saying a word, as if she was ignoring us. * When we tried to place our order, she acted like she couldn't hear us. * When we asked for the check, we were ignored again. * The restaurant wasn't busy at all, so it wasn't an issue of being overwhelmed. The most frustrating part is that an automatic gratuity of at least 18% is added to the bill, yet the service we received was far below what anyone would reasonably expect. However the imperial rolls were so-so ... (I think the non vegetarian ones are better.) The food here is good but it doesn't stretch into the great category. We tried this place once long ago and I remember thinking the pho wasn't as good as I could get elsewhere. So, it took a long time to come back. This time we tried the imperial rolls and the vegetarian fried egg noodles with crispy noodles. The imperial rolls were delicious and came with lots of lettuce and herbs to roll them into. The noodles were quite bland and I felt like the crispy noodles weren't what I was expecting. This is painful to write this review , Ive been going there since they opened, maybe 30 years.It was my go-to Vietnamese restaurant. Not anymore :( We ordered 2 phos to go and said meat inside.Which means you don't want rare meat.When I get take out from other Vietnamese restaurants they put meat in broth or in tin foil. They put raw meat in the noodles which turned all of our noodles bright red with blood. It was so awful I just threw mine in trash.
