COVID takeout experience...happy camper! Vietnamese food is one of my favorites - Bac Nam has been on my radar for years but have never gone - until now, thank you COVID (I'm sorry, but that's a legit statement for me). Anyway, thank you also to the reviewer who mentioned about the parking situation, I was lucky enough to snag a metered ($0.25 for 10 mins) spot right on King Street fronting the restaurant. I go in (with my mask on!), there's one lonely bag of takeout waiting on the counter next to the register, would you believe that that was my order?The man repeats my order to me and I happily pay, get my food, and head on out the door. I ordered one shrimp summer roll and a bbq chicken & spring roll bun (vermicelli) dish. The one summer roll, wrapped in foil, with a little container of peanut sauce that had a small dab of chili sauce was so good...the peanut sauce was kicked up with some other flavor (other than the chili sauce) - I don't normally use peanut sauce because I don't like the flavor...but this one was different, super good. Now, the bun dish was even more flavorful, if you can believe that! The chicken was tasty, soft, moist, with a slight char on it...delish! The spring rolls were good too, but the star was the fish sauce...what are they putting in these sauces?? It was so good I wish I could do shots of it! I also liked that there were a lot of vegetables in the bun, I could have had more mint, but it was still super tasty and delish. If you want great vietnamese food, please come here. Crabmeat Curry: Cooked with carrots, potatoes, onions, lemongrass, red peppers, and coconut milk. Typically curry is extra flavorful and full of spices, but this one to me was underwhelming when it comes to flavor. It was extremely oily and had a strange gooey texture, sort of like cheese? I love it when a little hole in the wall, drive by it everyday, owned by an actually family kinda restaurant is open and have withstood the rest of time. I think the owners of Bac Nam have seen my boys (18&9) grow up from when we had brought them in their strollers to toddlers to " big boys". We love that they serve a very authentic menu and have a few specialties like their crab meat curry and their butter chicken wings that you can't really find anywhere else and we've tried. Their Pho has just enough meat to even share with a bother person and they have that "broken rice" that I've only seen in a few authentic pho restaurants. My only less then glowing comment is that I their spring rolls have gotten a little greasier with their fillings loosely wrapped in their little rolls. I love a stinker spring roll that has its filling tightly wrapped so no grease can swing around my fillings. Also, some cucumber and mint were missing ( I should've asked for them because the owner would no doubt probably provided them) and I need that to complete my Vietnamese spring roll experience. This place is not convenient to me but I always stop by when I'm in the area. If I'm lucky, I can score free parking in one of the 6-8 spaces in back. Everyone seems to come by to order pho or maybe their well-known curry with a baguette (I've never tried either) but I always get an order of the banh bot loc or what's translated on the menu here as "Vietnamese steamed dumplings." These "dumplings" are kind of hard to find outside of Chinatown. They're made of dried shrimp suspended in a gelatinous almost mochi-like blob. Can't tell if they're steamed or boiled but they're very moist and served with green onions, crisp fried shallots, and Bac Nam's fish sauce -- which is honestly one of the best around, IHMO. This dish is mostly a vehicle for sauce as that's what gives the dish most of its taste. Go try! read more

I always drive past past Bac Nam. I never really thought about dining here until recently. My co-worker had her birthday luncheon here because she is a fan of Vietnamese food and desired to try some place new. Someone else in our office recommended Bac Nam. From the outside, Bac Nam appears to look like your average hole-in-the-wall Pho eatery. There is a small parking lot in the rear of the building and street parking out front. When you enter the restaurant, you can immediately see that the interior is actually very spacious compared to what you see from the outside. My co-worker said that they actually expanded the dining area from what it was before. We had a reservation for ~12 of us. We were greeted and seated right away by the owner. As we were still waiting for the rest of our party to arrive, we were given menus and our drink orders were taken. I like the fact that we did not feel rushed to order right away. Our orders all came out in a timely matter. I ordered the usual plain Pho that I usually get. Honestly, it's hard to mess up plain Pho. Prices were reasonable, but definitely not dirt cheap. I thought $2.00 for a canned soda was a bit much. I usually don't like to drink the water from these kind of restaurants because it's not filtered and I can usually tell. Bac Nam was no different. Overall, service was efficient and friendly. I was impressed that our server remembered everyone's orders and who ordered what! The restaurant interior is also rather clean. A colleague tried to order the lotus root salad without pork and the man just said a quick "no." I'm assuming it's premade so no substitutions. My crab curry had a good amount of shredded crab and flavor but it was hard to eat because of the amount of corn starch used. The sauce was extremely thick, and had the consistency of jelly. For the curry you have a choice of rice , bread or noodle & I chose french bread. It was nicely toasted & I have no complaints there. A coworker ordered the fried sweet & sour fish and I wanted to put out a PSA saying this is not a whole fish (which she expected). They're more like fried fish nuggets with sauce & veggies. A friend recommended this place to me today so I decided to try it out especially with all the positive yelp reviews. I don't have much experience with vietnamese food besides the usual pho places I visit so I am unsure on how good/authentic the food is so please read my review with that in mind. The service was good they were very friendly but also a little awkward. I tend to over order so I can taste most of the stuff in one trip but I was recommended that it was a lot of food already which is a nice gesture so I decided to stop there. I ordered BBQ Chicken Skewers, Steamed Dumplings, Stuffed Chicken Wings, Lemon Beef Salad, Tamarind Fried Shrimp, Crab Curry, rice & bread and a Spicy Beef Soup to share. The only thing I really really liked were the chicken skewers. The Stuffed Chicken Wings didnt arrive and everything else felt like it just needed a little more seasoning or salt. I ordered a Viet Coffee half way thru the meal and that never arrived either. The biggest problem for me was that my total was $111.00 but for what we ordered our food shouldn't cost more than $100 before tax. So I guess I was charged for the coffee? To Bac Nams benefit. They did say back my order to me but I usually just say yes at the end so it could have been me who agreed to the order that did not include the Stuffed Chicken Wings. I wanted something soupy; the husband suggested pho; I looked up Yelp, saw the reviews on the crab curry and it was settled. I ordered a small crab curry for me, a lemongrass chicken for the boy, and the husband ordered a large combination pho. Oh, and we shared an order of spring rolls and the husband had one single summer roll. While the crab curry is tasty, I wasn't blown away. Maybe because my mind was too focused on the price tag ($19.95). Still, there was crab meat in every spoonful, and I took half home because I couldn't finish it, so I guess that makes it worth the price. Rice or French bread is served separately at $2 and $2.50 respectively. The lemongrass chicken plate was huge! It isn't spicy, but I thought it's missing the lemongrass flavor. I've had better lemongrass chicken elsewhere. The boy didn't complain and ate most of it, however, so I guess that's all that matters, at least today. The large combination pho was, well, large. Ha! Interestingly it came with steak, meatballs, and tendons too. At least we think they're tendons? The other pho places we usually go to don't serve tendons. The meatball was smooth--that's how I judge meatballs-- and the broth was tasty. Overall good value for money. The spring rolls smelled a little like banana lumpia, but in a good way, and only to me, it seems! I liked the dipping sauce--it is not too salty or fish sauce-y. For $9.50 we got 6 half pieces. While they were crispy and I could see a lot of ingredients, I can't say much for the taste. Overall I think it was a pretty good meal, although the crab curry and spring rolls were really pricey in my opinion. (Yeah, yeah I know crab is pricey). After we placed the pho order, the owner told us they ran out of beef tendon. Wait a minutes... a pho place on a Saturday ran out of beef tendon at lunch? They should be better prepare. I have to say that this is the best Vietnamese place that I have ever eaten at. The food, price, and service are all great. Everything was tasty, affordably priced, and had quick as well as very friendly service. The menu is extensive with the usual classic Vietnamese dishes, but they also have a lot of special and unique dishes that are not the norm for a Vietnamese Pho shop. The two that stood out which I ordered was the Lotus Root Salad and Crabmeat curry. Both were outstanding and highly recommend to try. The Lotus Root Salad is the pretty much the same as the classic Green Papaya Salad, but with grated lotus root verses green papaya. The lotus root makes for a healthy option as I am sure it is a good source of fiber and probably almost zero calories to it. It was very nice that the brought the sauce on the side so you can added it as you wished. There Crabmeat curry was amazing. Lots of crab throughout the curry along with vegetables as well a the perfect amount of spice and heat. You can get it with French bread or rice, but I think the bread is best with this dish as you eat it more like a stew and have the bread on the side to dip and eat as you go long. I did notice other tables around me ordering Pho. They look very large and filled with lots of goodies. By the size of them, if you are not that hungry, I would say start with a smaller size and especially if you are ordering appetizers. One thing to note, although it is on the street and easy to spot on the road, the parking might be a challenge. I got lucky with street parking right in front, but that was because I went just after 11am. There is parking in the back, but limited. It also gets busy from people working in the near by medical building, so best to eat early or late to avoid the crowds. I will be back and highly recommend this place. read more

One of those places that you could miss if you are not looking for the exact location, but this is what makes this place a perfect location for Vietnamese lovers. Luckily there is a parking lot in the back of the restaurant, but if that is full, there are plenty of street parking stalls available. Not the nicest restaurant, but do not let the outside fool you. I went with two friends and we were seated right away. However, I am sure there can be a wait during busy hours. For our appetizer, we shared the Vietnamese Steamed Dumpling (Banh Bot Loc). This dish is hard to find in Hawaii with the amount of quality they put into the preparation of this dish. My best friend specifically chose this restaurant for this dish and it definitely did not disappoint. The tapioca flour wrapping around the shrimp and pork is a unique combination of different textures in your mouth. I would definitively order this again!! My boyfriend chose the Crabmeat curry for our main entree. We do love spicy food and I know this dish is not made to be spicy, however we did have to add some chili peppers to the dish to make it to our liking. The crabmeat did not seem like it was fresh crab, maybe from a can since it was the same consistency, size, and texture through the entire dish. Nonetheless, still delicious. I would recommend to eat this dish with bread instead of rice, but you can order both if you are unable to choose between one or the other. Lastly, I got the cold vermicelli noodles with spring rolls. I remember eat this while I was growing up, so I always have to order this whenever I got to a Vietnamese restaurant. And it does not help that I love noodles too ;). The noodles were cooked perfectly as well as the spring rolls. I prefer to not have my spring rolls soggy so I removed them from the bowl with the noodles and ate them separately so they retained their crispness. One thing to be aware of this restaurant, if you do not like fish sauce, I would not recommend to come here. Most of their dishes are served with fish sauce so the restaurant occasionally has the fish sauce smell, but it goes away after the restaurant goers finish consuming their dishes. Broth flavorful but not overpowering, noodles had great texture, not mushy or soft. Most pho places don't give enough Hoisin, Siracha & chili oil for me which totally bums my trip...this place gave the more than enough! Every bite tasted just as good as the last. Last night had the BUN with Spring Rolls & BBQ chicken. Everything was delicious! The chicken isn't very salty but I figure it's because you'll use the fish sauce, which is very good. They have a wide variety of vietnamese food to choose from, not just the simple pho with a couple rice plate choices here and there. They have a whole ton to choose from! I recommend coming here to get your vietnamese food fix. Its not like the mainland, but it definately is out of all the other vietnamese restaurants league. We ordered 2 bowls of pho and it came with a few sprigs of basil, 2 slices of lemon and a small handful of sprouts. I asked for a bit more veggies and felt like I was imposing on them by asking for more. I was told that what we got was for 2 bowls, as if I didn't know that... First off, they have their own private parking lot in the back. That's definitely a plus. There's also street parking available if the back lot gets full. Next, I'm never, ever a stickler for a good, hole-in-the-wall restaurant being uber clean, but I couldn't help but notice how much dust and grime build-up there was on the banister/wall by the table we sat at. I just did my best to ignore it and focused on my food. The pho broth was excellent. The side vegetable portions were skimpy and I had to ask for jalapenos--which they brought. Yay. My husband ordered the bun bo hue. He said the broth was very flavorful and actually had pigs feet in it, like it should; it did not, however, have blood cake in it, which has been a real struggle to find in the bon bu hue places. The spring rolls were just okay, but the portion and size of the rolls were big. I would still not order them again, based on taste alone. The reason Bac Nam is a real contender in the Vietnamese cuisine world, is that not only is their pho and bon bu hue broths solid, but they offer a variety of traditional dishes on their menu. If you want a really good, hot bowl of Pho, I know this Pho-ntastic place...BAC NAM! A friend brought me here to try their pho out before and this was where I learned to appreciate broth--before loading my pho with Sriracha and Hoisin sauce. Their broth is heavenly. It makes you feel like you're ready to defeat all kinds of sickness! Which is why I came here recently ordering a takeout because I was hella feeling under the weather and needed something to fix me up. I ordered a large Pho with beef balls and a wonton and egg noodle soup. The owner was so sweet, genuinely wishing I'd get better and hoping the soup would fix me. The inside is usually busy around the evening, but I did a take out and it was perfect. The wonton and egg noodle soup was amazing also, having just the right amount of flavoring and spices whilst swirling around in hot broth.
