Also purchased the Pho Special Combo. Meat portions were a little skimpy, but otherwise pretty decent pho. It was relatively inexpensive so ... par for the course on the protein servings. As for parking, I usually go during lunch on a weekday so I'm able to find street parking in front of the restaurant. Bac Nam, a small unassuming popular Vietnamese restaurant, sits at the former Washington Saimin Stand between Pensacola and Piikoi streets. Opened in May 2004 by husband-and-wife owners Tam and Kimmy Huynh, Bac Nam means "North South" in Vietnamese. While the Huynh's are from North Vietnam, the restaurant's authentic menu offerings include both northern and southern areas of Vietnam. Some of the dishes that were ordered were: steamed dumplings, curry crab with bread, vermicelli with spring rolls and bbq pork, beef salad, short ribs, and grilled beef wrapped in lot leaves. As I have a small appetite, I chose the Vietnamese steamed dumplings as my main meal. Six steamed dumplings with fillings of marinated shrimp, pork, and onions, were nicely presented and topped with cilantro, chopped green onions, and crispy fried shallots. It was served with a delectable house-made fish sauce that was slightly salty, sweet, spicy with shredded carrots, daikon, chili peppers, lime juice, and spices, for dipping. Made with tapioca flour, the dumpling wrappers were chewy and sticky. The dumplings reminded me of the Chinese half moons, but only chewier and stickier, and were delicious with all the garnishes and spices! Customer service was satisfactorily delivered by the personable owner, Tam, who is gracious, friendly, and accommodating. He took our orders, served them, refilled our water glasses, and periodically came around to ensure that everything was okay. There's a small spacious dining room as you enter, and our group was seated on a long table in another room off to the side. This side room is great for private parties. It's BYOB, so the wines were flowing! Hours of operation are Mon to Sat, 11a to 2:30p for lunch and 5p to 8p for dinner; Sun closed. There are a few free parking spaces in the back of the building and metered parking on So. King Street fronting the restaurant (be aware of tow away during rush hour). Exceptional food, homey vibes, and an owner you can befriend - this cozy location on S. King st will become your new go-to spot for comfort food. Bac Nam is my favorite family business to support, especially since it's the birth place of my closest friend group today. Their pho, papaya salad, and spring rolls single-handedly bring people together. What more can you ask for? It's definitely worth the fight for parking, although there is a small lot located right around the corner of the store. Otherwise, there's street parking in the surrounding area. My favorites being the crispy spring rolls and the steamed Vietnamese dumplings which are nice and chewy due to the glutinous wrap used. Have recently discovered the crab curry here as memorably delicious. While it is not the original restaurant serving crab curry in town, it is my preferred as it is not too salty and seasoned perfectly. Best when accompanied by the crispy French baguette. Comes in two sizes. Trust me, you will want to get the large, even if just for the leftovers! Bac Nam is on South King Street just after McKinley High School. There is metered parking on the street. We often come here on rainy days and when it's cool out. My favorite dish is the beef stew. The beef is tender and they serve a good portion of it. Included is tendon as well. The stew broth is flavorful. The carrots are always cooked to perfection. Not too over cooked. Our combined favorite dish would be the chicken curry. The chicken is tender, there are veggies and the sauce is unique and delightfully robust . We pour it over their jasmine rice which is topped with scallions! Our first meal after getting off the plane and moving to Hawaii was at Bac Nam, a Vietnamese restaurant! It was a small mom and pop shop with a clean, down-to-earth atmosphere. The AC was a welcome relief after getting off the plane on a hot, muggy day. The restaurant had a local vibe, and it was clear that it was frequented by locals more than by tourists. The pho was savory, with lots of fresh herbs and a delicious broth. We were blown away by the amazing stuffed chicken wings, which are hard to find in most restaurants. The only downside was there was street parking only, and the street could be busy with cars, but at least most of the time the curbside metered spots were open so parking wasn't really an issue as long as you're careful getting in and out of the car with traffic zipping past you. This is a great place for authentic Vietnamese cuisine and where the locals go to eat. If you're looking for a down-to-earth atmosphere and delicious food, check this place out! read more

All I can say is the crab curry is a must order. We called in our order ahead of time to pick up and eat at home. The phone line was busy but if you call a few times you will eventually get through. We ordered the crab curry, French bread, dumplings, and the spicy lemongrass bun which was like vermicelli noodles with there spicy lemongrass tofu. The dumplings had a filling that was similar to fish eggs. I would say that I would not order that again as it was very dry and chewy. The curry goes well with rice or bread and is very flavorful. This place doesn't look like much from outside however the food is generous and delicious. I have been searching for Vietnamese food that is generous and portion as I am a big eater of noodles. My favorite is the cold vermicelli. They were very generous in their toppings and vegetables. And the sauce was really good. The thought is also great there and they give a large portion as well. It is clean inside and the service is quick and the food is nicely made. Located on king street on the right side of king street which is a one way street. They have parking in behind the restaurant which are marked customers for Bac nam restaurant or street meter parking. As you enter no sanitizer they have it at the register towards the back near kitchen area. They did not ask for proof of vaccinations or getting any contact tracing information, just sit down and then served water and gave us the menu. As you enter the restaurant looks pretty small to accommodate couples, but the next room towards the restroom they have another room with larger tables which can handle 2 family of 6 per table. The first item to come out was the spring rolls it looked good and vegetables were pretty fresh, but as we tried it we were very dissatisfied, because it was very greasy and tasted like it was cooked in old frying oil that was turning. Called the waitress and told her about the problem and she said it is supposed to be greasy, told her I have eaten a lot of spring rolls from many restaurants and it is not greasy like this seems like she cooked it when the temperature was not ready and it soaked up all the oil. She finally said if you don't like I take it back! Next came the Special Pho and a regular Pho both small which was the right size, the flavor of the soup was very good and tasty which I let the server know it was very good! For nearly two decades, we've passed by Bắc Nam Vietnamese restaurant on South King Street but never once opened its doors to try them. Yeah, we've stopped to look at the menu posted on their window and viewed their dark-tinted window storefront as a "hole-in-the-wall." We were skeptical about what we'd find indoors regarding food quality, flavor, portion, value, and service. However, we did like that this restaurant has its own attached parking lot since most of South King Street's parking is metered. The other day, while we were driving out to have lunch, I told my husband that I wasn't feeling in the mood for the Korean food he suggested. Instead, my taste buds were up for curry, but my husband wanted Korean barbecue plate lunch. We almost reached an impasse when I told him about Vietnamese food. My husband almost slammed on the brakes while incredulously staring at me and interrogating me about how my taste buds could suddenly change from wanting curry (he assumed Indian, Thai, or Japanese) to phở. He chuckled when he asked me if I was "getting back" at him for his decision to eat malatang as we finished our recent exercise session. Ha! Not me (gently smirking). But, because I had previewed Bác Nam's menu, I knew they'd have dishes that would satisfy or be a compromise to our taste buds. Luckily, we were approaching Bắc Nam, so I told him to turn into their parking lot. We entered the restaurant and found its interior to resemble a "plate lunch stand" yet was clean, cozy, and quiet. A male server/busser/host/cashier greeted and welcomed us in, and as far as I could see, there were only two employees. The smallish restaurant seats around 40 people and public restrooms are also inside. FOOD: -Cà Ri Cua: I noticed this somewhat obscure Vietnamese crabmeat curry on their menu. I've eaten Vietnamese crab curry in Los Angeles' Luv2Eat Bistro and loved the flavors and textures. However, looking at the menu photos at Bắc Nam, I realized that the bowl of curry would be less messy to eat because there are no shells to contend with, like at Luv2Eat Bistro. My husband is a better shellfish eater than me since he stacks or organizes the cleaned shells or bones on the bone dish. Sheesh! And you thought that I was "AR!" Getting back to the food, I asked the server/busser/host/cashier and co-owner, Mr. Huyn, if their curry was spicy and if the curry was thickened with coconut milk. There are chili peppers in this yellow curry, and there was a faint taste of coconut milk and lemongrass. The curry flavor was more similar to Madras curry than Thai curry, even with the lemongrass and coconut milk with a thick consistency, until I dipped in and found more broth below the surface. There was a lot of crabmeat, mirepoix of onions,potatoes, and carrots. I ordered a freshly baked baguette ($3) instead of steamed rice to dip into the curry. This crabmeat curry was tasty, rich, and filling as I could only eat half a bowl and baguette. $24.95 (small) + $3 (baguette). -Beef Short Ribs & BBQ Chicken Rice Plate: My husband found this combination rice plate to satisfy his taste buds and appetite. When our server delivered this plate, we were impressed by its enormity, quality of ingredients, and cooking execution. The fire-seared edges showed us that they don't use a flat-top griddle, and they genuinely mean "barbecue." The beef short ribs were tender and flavorful, while the barbecue chicken thighs were moist and juicy. The barbecue chicken tasted a bit bland, BUT the accompanying condiment dish of Vietnamese dipping sauce AKA nước chấm, the zesty, sweet, sour, garlicky with a chili pepper kick enlivened its flavors. My skinny husband scarfed down the entire rice plate and even dipped it into my crabmeat curry over some of his rice. $17.95 Mr. Huyn, the server/host/busser/cashier, was friendly and kept everyone's water glasses refilled while inquiring if customers needed more food or service. I think this restaurant only had two workers (husband and wife team), yet they were efficient. We ate at noon on a Tuesday, which is peak time, yet we never felt unattended. We'll be back to try more of the familiar Vietnamese dishes as well as the obscure ones. read more

Had an appt during lunch so while Hubs and I were out, decided to swing by Bac Nam. Luckily a little late for lunch, so had a parking spot in front. The crab curry or short ribs are my normal go tos, but decided on the S&P fried squid & the Hubs got the lamb curry. Those dishes are all ala carte, so had to order him rice on the side. Squid was really tasty, but felt like it was missing something...maybe just rice to balance out the oil? And maybe a little shoyu? Or maybe mayo mixed with shoyu. Located on busy South King Street directly across from my favorite Tammy's Barbershop with parking on the street or behind the restaurant. I love rice noodles but am trying my best to be carb conscious these days and decided ahead of time to resist my normal cold noodle bowl preference as I sat down and reviewed their extensive menu. I started my lunchtime visit ordering an appetizer shrimp Summer Roll, served with a delightful peanut sauce on the side The perfect rice wrapped summer roll is stuffed with noodles, lettuce and shrimp. It was so good that I ordered another one! I also ordered a #97 Sautéed Vegetables & Chicken (without Rice). Served on a platter enough for two normal people or one hungry man like me! I washed it all down with a can of green tea and resisted ordering dessert. And the everyday basics as truly solid here. With each meal, we always have a salad, 9 times out of 10, it's the Papaya salad, but we've been known to change it up to the Chicken or the lemon beef, all so ono! Most people would walk past, or keep driving by. I would make a hard turn and park my car in the parking behind the restaurant then walk right through the doors. Vietnamese food is good for your soul, spirit, and filling up your belly. The pho dac biet is a go-to for my boyfriend. He likes his pho with everything (meat cuts) in it. Sometimes I'll get the spicy lemongrass beef pho/bun bo hue that is filled with large soft chunks of beef. Sometimes I even order the banh khot/Vietnamese pancakes (mini size). The crab curry is also tasty with a piping hot french bread roll. You can also get the curry with rice. They have a very diverse menu, and execute this large extensive menu quite well! Gunna bump this back up to 5 stars after a few more visits. I've had about 10 or more dishes and very few misses. The only thing that was terrible was the flan in all my visits and I'm not a dessert person so I don't really care. Their pho is amazing (I think that's the mark of a great Vietnamese restaurant) but for some reason I never tried it until tonight. I guess because it's hard to share and I go with friends so I don't want to be the selfish Gollum slurping my precious noodles in the corner and not sharing... But finally I went with my hubby who knows I'm a food aggressive monster so we got a large pho to share. It's got the unmistakable "make you want to shovel it down your mouth until you're so full you could die but can't stop won't stop" taste. And you can sub egg noodles if you're neurotic like me and want to marry your ramen with your pho and eat their love children. The large combo pho had all the yummy things I crave, including gelatinous tendon, rare beef, beef balls and brisket... hold the tripe bc I'm a bit too white. I forgot to take photos until the carnage was shameful and I just couldn't post the wreckage. Sorry Yeeps. But trust me, it was baller. There's SO many dishes on the menu that I made my husband pledge to go back at least once a month to try new things. But every time I go, I get the beef in lot leaves. It is like grilled stuffed grape leaves but instead of rice it's a hamburger beef cigar with all the DIY fixens of a summer roll. They give you like 20 rice paper wrappers so I take it home and make some shrimp and make my own version the next day with the inevitable leftovers. Their portions are big. The pho is decent but I also have always had the chicken pho. The people are kind and I know all of their faces. There's always a man pleasantly greeting all the guests and 3 ladies in the back that sometimes you can hear them bicker with one another or just speak loudly. I cannot assume since I don't speak Vietnamese. The food is pretty consistent but yesterday I feel that my pho broth was a bit different in taste. It wasn't bad, especially since I was craving pho. It is nearby my house and I just wanted a bowl of pho and spring rolls. I have to say that the spring rolls came out a bit drenched in oil. When I wrapped them in salad and added all my extras and took a bite, the oil dripped down my hand. Usually that doesn't happen. It's ok, I patted it in my napkin and all good. For a quiet place, try this restaurant. I hear the curry is good. I had the chicken wings before and they are tasty. They aren't crispy, so don't expect them to crunch but flavorful and the rice that comes with it has a lot of taste with green onions. Summer rolls are decent too. read more

Been in my bookmarks FOREVER, given the famed crab curry. We finally stopped by this past weekend, almost at closing - we walked in at 8:30 PM when they closed at 9 and they were welcoming of us. Ordered the lotus root salad, the crab curry, and the bf had the lemon grass chicken. Lotus salad: good, but not great. I asked for extra mint and brought the rest home to doctor up with shredded cabbage and chopped cucumber. Lemongrass chicken: also good, but not great. Smelled amazing and the onions were tasty but I didn't eat the chicken since I am pescetarian. Crab curry: definitely the reason to come here - it's very rich and looks like it's thickend with tapioca. Ordered white rice to go with it. The small portion is about $22, but was enough for at least four people I think. We took the leftovers home and I thinned it out to make a sauce for some plain soft tofu. Bf thought it was too rich in its original state and liked it better when modified. All in all, good place to come, and I'd come back for some of their other dishes, but the true reason to come is the curry, which is not something you find at most place. Finally finishing this long and overdue review! The best part of Bac Nam is their private parking lot in the back. About 9-10 cars can fit in there but be careful as your enter or exit. The entrance and exit is the same causing the probability of an accident there to be higher. If you can't find a stall because they are busy then you can find street parking right on King St. Just read the street signs so you don't get a parking ticket or worse, towed. When you enter, you'll notice the cash register immediately in front of you. There are several tables in the main area and the side room has several other tables. They can accommodate small, medium and large groups. All condiments are on the table. Customer service here is sub par. We normally have to ask for things more than once to get them. Also, they are a little stingy when we ask for something (i.e. we asked for some slices of lemon and they bring only one). I've tried their Lemon Beef Salad, Green Papaya Salad, Summer Roll, Shredded Pork Roll, Crabmeat Curry w/Bread, PHO Special Combination of Meat, HUE's Spicy Beef Soup, Stewed Beef Egg Noodle, RICE w/Stewed Beef and Two Colored Tapioca over the few times I've dined here. The food is about average with their Crabmeat Curry w/Bread being the best dish I've had here. It's good and better than most places with chucks of crab meat inside. Now that I've had an adequate taste of the menu, experienced their customer service over several meals and been here with different people, I can fairly review them. I think they are just average for Vietnamese cuisine and just below average for customer service at a restaurant. Location is convenient for people working in the area and the place is pretty clean. Bac Nam came highly recommended by my coworker who is also one of the artists who painted the vibrant storefront mural of the dragon and Mekong River. Overall, the food was exceptionally delicious. Service was warm and friendly. The space was accommodating for our party of 10 in the back room. 5 stars - hands down! Based on other recent reviews, my heart was already set on ordering the house special Crabmeat Curry (#53 Ca Ri Cua) before I even walked in the door. The owner confirmed that the small size order at $20.95 would definitely be enough for two people. So, I decided on a side of rice and my coworker chose French bread. Made with carrots, onions, potatoes, lemongrass, red peppers, coconut milk, and a generous amount of fresh crab meat, the dish was creamy, a bit spicy, and wonderfully satisfying. Even after sharing we still had enough to split and take home for dinner. Sweet! Now, I usually love to order Pho anytime I dine at a Vietnamese restaurant, but I just knew I wouldn't be able to finish even a small sized bowl. So, I asked our server if I could order a side order of the broth and he said "yes"! Topped off with scallions and white onion, the broth was incredible and it totally hit the spot. I could tell the stock was properly simmered with patience and love. I'm going to make it a point to come back for a regular size order of Pho with noodle, veggies, and protein! To make my lunch totally complete with other flavors and texture, I also ordered one summer roll and an iced coffee. Overall, I was content and raving about coming back with the family! Other entrees ordered by our large party were the Lemongrass Chicken rice plate, Cold Vermicelli Noodles with Spring Rolls, and Grilled Tofu Roll-Ups on a plate. Everyone was happy with their choice and by the time we returned to the office, it was suddenly super quiet by 2:00pm. Yep, food coma had kicked in!! Always a good sign of good food, right?! Free parking was available behind the restaurant (the driveway is off of King and right next door the Bac Nam), if you're lucky. WOW! Cant believe I've never been here before. I'll keep it short and sweet..If i had a "sleeper" list, this place would be on it! From the outside it seemed okay...but the food was 5 stars! And its BYOB! Feeling in the mood for Pho my GF recommended Bac Nam. We went here and the place was packed with a large party but they accomadated us. Although I was in the mood for Pho I looked around and everyone was eating curry! When in rome.... We ended up ordering spring rolls, grilled beef short ribs and a small order of crab curry..no Pho Spring rolls came out hot and it was a generous portion of 3 large rolls cut in half so 6 pieces. $10.50 Grilled beef short ribs (similar to Kalbi) were delicious! Good size cuts with little fat seasoned with spices and a hint of lemon grass served over shredded cabbage. Similar to Kalbi but with a Vietnamese twist on it, they were juicy and tender. BF was very happy with these! Good portion for $14.95 Now for the Finale Crab Curry $20.95. Truly amazing and very unique I've never had Vietnamese style of crab curry before and this one was so good! The small portion is large and perfect to share with 2 people. Just a little spice to it but so tasty. They put a lot of crab in the dish and the flavour is hard to describe you just need to try it yourself! Its different from Japanese and Thai curry but so savory and flavorful. So much for short and sweet! I'll be back next time for the Pho but will definitely get the curry again! Ate here for the first time with my family and we were pretty impressed. We ordered the large combination pho, bbq chicken plate, spicy lemongrass chicken plate, spring rolls, and salt/peppered shrimp. Other than the spring rolls tasting ok and the bbq chicken plate was pretty dry, everything else was pretty delicious. I wished the pho had more meat, but the broth was delicious. I think if they sold banana tapioca and sandwiches here, this would be my go-to spot. The staff are friendly, but the food took about 30mins to come out. The restaurant is pretty large and limited parking is available. read more

This place IS IT. So good. The curry crab is DELICIOUS. Can eat with a baguette or rice. Never tasted anything like it. The lotus root salad is unique and different. Fresh bite of flavor. The steamed dumplings (pork/shrimp filling) were very tasty. I like how Bac Nam has dishes that I haven't had elsewhere. I love trying new foods, so it was great to try three new dishes. The owner and staff are very friendly. I look forward to coming back here. read more
