I came here today because I happen to love their Bai Mi Sandwich shop a few blocks away. When I found out that they actually had another place nearby that was a full Vietnamese restaurant I just had to try it out. Wish I didn't. Where do I start? I started with a appetizer consisting of fried spring roll. Nothing wrong with the taste except for the fact that there wasn't much meat in it. Very nicely crisp fried skin. Just wish there was more filling. Pho. One of my all time favorite comfort food, especially on a cold day like today. I think I have to rate this as my second least favorite place for this noodle soup dish, first place being this god awful place that I went to in San Francisco's Chinatown a few years back. I still shudder to think of eating Pho at that place. The noodles here was way thicker then what I am accustomed to for Pho. The beef, normally sliced paper thin to cook easily from the hot broth, was about 2 to 3 times thicker then normal and was from a different cut ( can't figure out from where ) then what is used at other Vietnamese Restaurants. The different cut and thicker slices makes the meat chewier then what it needs to be. It also makes the beef harder to get cooked in the broth. I just gave up waiting and ate mine with a little pink left in it. The saving grace of the Pho was that the broth was fine. My friend that was with me had some kind of seafood curry soup. Don't know the name of it since I wasn't paying attention but he was complaining nonstop about how watery it was. I took a little taste from his dish and have to agree. 3 dishes. 3 disappointments. There are two ways to approach a meal at Thanh Da, either trying to secure a table and taking a look at their regular menu, or grabbing a bánh mì for takeout. Of the latter, every sandwich is priced at $3.75 which seems to be the going rate for Sunset Park these days. I started with the #1 sandwich, the normal bánh mì, just to sample how the place handled making them. I am not so impressed by their wrapper, just a boring baguette that was not fluffy and only toasted a bit. Inside the content was more promising, but was not stuffed full of vegetables and pickled items as much as I would prefer. The meats were good, and the grilled pork inside was especially tasty, sweetened to perfection. The sandwich is served very warm and fresh, and should be eaten immediately. I have only sat down once here in this always crowded restaurant, a popular location among the Chinese in Sunset Park. They serve all the normal items and everything is done at least averagely. The rolls (both cha giò ($3.50 for 4) and goi cuôn ($3.25 for 2)) seem made at least half a day before, but of good ingredients. Their fish and peanut sauces are both up to par. I drove home a bit faster after eating here tonight -- so I could eat something else to distract from my experience at Thanh Da (thank goodness for Villabate cannolis). We ordered the summer rolls, Vietnamese spring rolls, large pho, and sliced pork vermicelli. And so, our 1-star rating explained: 1) The place smelled like mothballs. Who knows why. But it's not an appetizing smell. 2) There was a piece of bug shell in the fish sauce (thorax or abdomen, not sure, you can check my photo). 3) The vermicelli noodles were dry and chewy. The pork was plainly marinated, and did not have those nice herbs or small leaves you normally expect. It also appeared to be broiled instead of grilled. 4) We were brought the wrong dish instead of the pho initially. 5) The pho only had one type of meat, and the tripe was overcooked. Even without all of the above detriments, the flavor of the dishes simply did not carry through. I'm not sure how this place deserves its 4-star average. And so the search for decent Vietnamese in Brooklyn continues... I do not recommend this place. read more

If I were to review this place strictly on its iced coffee, I'd give them 5 stars. It was delicious, one of the best iced coffees I've had. Alas, I had more than just their iced coffee. I also had a vermicelli bowl, which wasn't that great. Not much pork and the spring rolls tasted quite average. While there was plenty of cucumber, there wasn't much else veggie wise. I kept on thinking, "If this were in California, it would have gone out of business long ago." My wife also thought her pho was inferior to what she's had elsewhere. I came here on a whim, 'cause I was really missing Vietnamese food - I think it'd been at least a couple of months. I don't usually come out to Sunset Park (I think I've only been once?), but I was in Prospect Heights and the trip didn't seem too long from there. So I hopped on the train, and went on a little adventure by myself. I got to Thanh Da and the place, though small, was tidy and efficiently run. The server was friendly and polite although she didn't speak much English. I've heard that the Bun Bo Hue is popular here, and although I love that dish (I had the original dish in Hue, Vietnam a couple of years ago), I really came to get my all-time standby, the very traditional and straightforward Pho Dac Biet. The broth, which is normally how I judge phos primarily, was great. Complex but clean, with depth but not overpowered by any one flavor. There could've been a little more meat, but it's suffice to say I was very satisfied. The condiments were also plentiful and I proceeded to douse my soup with them. I then had the Vietnamese coffee, which was just how I liked it - earthy, dark and sweet. Overall, I was very happy I made the trip out. Wish it was a little closer to the areas I usually hang, but I guess it's a good excuse to explore a new neighborhood.. I got a banh mi to go, so I'll have to see how that tastes tonight! read more

My normal location to get regular viet sandwiches. The bread is baked to a great crisp and they give a good amount of stuffings. They do have a vegetarian sandwich which is not on the menu probably because I am the first one to order such. At first they said they don't make it but then I convince them to. And now when I order it, they don't create a problem. Unfortunately the pricing of it is a little unfair, $3, meanwhile a regular sandwich is $3.75. I've definitely had better Vietnamese in Manhattan. The pho was standard and didn't have that flavorfuly soupy broth. The herbs didn't come through as well that usually does in a nice hot bowl of pho. The dry vermicelli and spring rolls dish was nice but didn't stand out. Bright and clean space, sun light coming through from the wide and clean windows to the dining room made this already sparkling clean space even sparkled. Cold tea in a metal pot on a table was free! About 90% of Asian customers were enjoying Pho. It was hot day and I was sweating. I couldn't imagine eating hot soup so I opted for Thit Nuong ($5.75) - grilled pork.with vermicelli and chopped green salad. It's a noodle salad dish with a grilled pork. The dressing for this salad was a staple of Vietnam sauce, Nuoc Cham. It wasn't overly sweet like most hi of Vietnamese restaurant in Manhattan but gave a good flavor to this dish. Yum goodness juices met on the bottom of the bowl with bite size cut grilled pork pieces, rice noodle and lettuce with mint were well mixed at the end. Adding Sambal Oelek was a good idea. The heat helped to take to another level of Umami. Vietnamese spring roll, Cha Gio, had a strange texture. I couldn't figure out what's making that texture and it was okay. My friend got Do Bien soup (seafood with rice noodle/ $6.50). The broth was very tasty. Adding Sambal elevated another layer of excitement. Is it worth coming from Manhattan for their Thit Nuong? I use to come here all the time until today. I asked for a plastic fork and plastic spoon because the utensils they gave me was not clean and had noodles still on it. They refuse to give me. they said that their policy is to use their utensils according to their boss. I've never heard of such thing. My friend and I were hungry and only had about 20 bucks in cash between us. Not wanting to pay ATM fees, we decided to make our $20 bucks work for us in the China Town area in Brooklyn. Enter Thanh Da. I've eaten here before and remembered having a good experience. Today, for some reason, the food was particularly good. It could have been because it was my first meal of the day, but I don't think so. We just ordered one Banh Mi special and a shake each. The bread was crispy without that overcooked, chewy and burnt bread texture. It just seems to crackle when you bit it. Thanh Da's banh mi used to be a weekly staple for me. Not only was the restaurant about 4 blocks away from my apartment, the sandwich was THAT good that I had to have it at least once a week. The perfectly toasted baguette, barbequed pork with just the right amount of smokiness and sweetness, and crunchy pickled vegetables hold a special place on my taste buds. I can't come up with any other sandwich that fulfills the sweet, salty, sour & spicy flavors all in the perfect bite. Not to mention, it provides you with the different textures required in a great sandwich - soft meat, crispy exterior and airy interior of the bread paired with some crunchy carrots and daikon. What more can you ask for? I've also tried their Pho and banh mi varieties, but always revert to the special because nothing else can really compare. Service is usually really quick and for the most part, friendly. Well I've officially moved out of the Sunset Park neighborhood and sadly admit that Thanh Da is probably one of the few restaurants in Brooklyn that I will miss most. read more

I was going to give them 4 stars but my #1 sandwich wasn't so great yesterday. They ran out of my favorite BBQ pork sandwich, which happens 50% of the time. They also load tons of jalapeno peppers if you ask for "spicy" so be sure to ask for only a little or no jalapeno peppers - my lips were burning!! The vietnamese coffee is really bitter and too strong for me but I like to get it time to time. I never ordered the rice dishes so this review is only for the sandwiches. read more

The only thing that we didn't like was the rainbow ice drink. They forgot to put sugar in it, so it taste plain. I am sure it would be very tasty otherwise. read more

Came to this tiny dive Vietnamese place in Borough Park after reading great reviews. Only six tables in this bare bones place. Started with summer rolls and BBQ pork in rice paper which were good but the peanut sauce on the side had a nasty after taste. It was three of us so instead of the waitress bringing all three entrees at once, they were brought out one at a time with a good ten minute gap in between. To add insult to injury, they brought me the wrong dish! Ordered the curry chicken soup vermicelli which was delicious and hell fire hot. Tried the pork vermicelli with coconut milk and it was very bland. I would rate it a little higher because what I ordered was terrific had the service had not been so discombobulated. Prices are very cheap as well. I recommend take out. If you're eating in, good luck. read more

Was reading through the mixed reviews, but decided to give this place a try and I'm glad I did. Got the #1 Viet sandiwch which was awesome! I would say it's equal to my favorite place Ba Xuyen, on the opposite end of 8th Ave. Bread was crunchy and the meat to bread ratio was perfect. Also got the pho dac biet, which was okay. Def satisfied the pho craving, but the meat was a little chewy for my liking. I did get it for take out, so maybe it's better fresh in the restaurant. I was a little confused by the counter/restaurant layout. Looks more like a take out spot but there are a couple of tables for dine in waiter service it appears. Didn't seem the most inviting place for that. The negative reviews seem to focus on poor service from the wait staff. The lady at the counter was friendly enough, but again wouldn't really come in here looking for high class restaurant service. However, if you're looking for a no frills delicious Viet sandwich place in the area, I would recommend this one. FYI there is limited/hard to find parking in this area. read more

This place is absolutely ridiculous. I've attempted to do business with them three times and all three times was an epic fail. First two times I placed an order on the phone and when I came to pick it up (30 minutes after I had placed the order), I was informed that I would need to wait another 25 to 30 minutes since they were very busy. The workers were unusually angry too. The last time I went, again I placed an order on the phone. The man on the phone indicated it would be ready within 15 minutes. I arrived 25 minutes after placing the call and was informed that because I was late, my meal was sold to someone else and that I would need to wait another 15 minutes for them to prepare another one. I had never heard of a place that sells your food if you are a few minutes late. This will be the last time I will ever attempt to build your business here again. This place has been open for many years and it's the best place for authentic Vietnamese food. AMBIANCE/STAFF: It's not a fancy resturant but it's mom and pop place and I love helping out any family owned business! Staff is very nice but it also depends on how busy they are. If it's too busy then you may not get the "best service" but you'll get okay service from them (This is based on dinning in) FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Still one of the best places for a Banh Mi sandwich. They have a second store by 8th avenue that only makes banh mi so if you're looking for rice, noodles and other specialty this is the store you need to come! The banh mi, bun bo hue and viet iced coffee here is amazing. It's some of the best I've had in city. Their bun bo hue is super spicy and has a very rich broth that has quality cuts of beef and pork feet. I recommend coming here early to eat this because it can get packed here quite fast. If you come in twos or threes, they may seat you with another group at a round table. Banh mi I've had here is consistent-the pork is very flavorful and the bread has a crispy skin. Viet iced coffee is RICH! It's a very bold roast with sweetened condensed milk to balance it out. Definitely wakes you up. Docking a star because we noticed another table freak out. The price is decent for NYC standard, I would say, and their food tastes better than most Vietnamese spots around NYC. Came across Thanh Da when I was browsing through Yelp to look for some good Bun Rieu. It's a small place with just 5 tables available. This is probably the most loaded bun rieu I have had. Their bun rieu came with chunks of pork, tomatoes, crab patties, bamboo shoots, and puff tofu along with bean sprouts, mint, and cilantro. The noodles were nice and silky but the broth could be more flavored. It tasted somewhat water down. I had to do some broth adjusting myself with the help of some fish sauce and lemon juice. Overall I still recommend this place and I will be back to try out the other items on the menu. read more

When I asked for extra noodles on the side they tried to charge me for two Bowls of Pho! I was like the menu clearly states you offer extra noodles on the side for $1.75 but they denied giving me noodles on the side and tried to upcharged me for two bowls! They couldn't even admit they were wrong and expected a tip after such horrible customer service. Please stay away from this place.
