Food: The food is good but nothing special or particularly impressive. We tried the pho and spring rolls. The spring rolls were delicious, freshly fried and very enjoyable. The pho was a bit underwhelming, and the broth didn't have much flavor compared to other pho broths we've tried. Portions are also a bit small. The quality of the meat and meatballs were just okay. This seems like a popular place, likely because it's the only Vietnamese restaurant in the area, but there are better Vietnamese restaurants than this one in NYC. Service: Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Service was quick, and staff were attentive. Ambiance: The restaurant is a good size with tables that can accommodate both small and large groups. I frequent this place with friends when I'm in the area. As with any pho place I judge them by their broth and noodles and their signature is what I usually order. If not, then I order the noodles with pork chop, that comes on the side. Unlike a lot of pho establishments after Covid, the broth here remains the same- full of flavor and not watered down. They also give a lot of scallions and cilantro (which I love) and a slice of lemon to enhance the flavor of the soup. The noodles aren't overcooked and have a nice chew to them. The bean sprouts that you put into the soup are consistently fresh and adds a nice crunch to everything. I also love their pork chop, also rich in lemongrass flavor. The only thing is that they only give one pork chop. Most places give at least 2. Overall- a place I would come back to. The staff are friendly and very efficient. This was our first time coming back in a long time, and this time we brought our two kids and the rest of our family. Since it was the Lunar New Year parade on 8th Avenue, we decided to dine in with my husband, our two children, my sister and brother-in-law, their three kids, and my parents. Because our group was so large, there wasn't a table big enough to seat all of us together. There was one round table available, so my sister and brother-in-law sat there with their kids. My husband, our two children, and I sat at a table for four, and my parents were seated at a separate table nearby. As we finished placing our order, I noticed that a round table that could seat six people had become available. I waited for a server to walk by so I could ask if we could switch tables, allowing my parents to sit together with my family. A server walked past, and I politely asked, "Hi, would it be possible for us to move to that table instead?" She suddenly shouted at me in Chinese, "Don't bother me!" I was completely shocked and embarrassed as everyone in the restaurant turned to look at me. I couldn't believe a staff member would speak so rudely to a paying customer. The way she spoke to me was extremely unprofessional. It didn't seem like this was her first time behaving this way, as none of the other staff members reacted, and she showed no remorse at all. To make matters worse, they forgot to add my husbands dish into our order and he had to wait an additional 10 minutes for his food to come out while the rest of us were already eating. I've been dining in this restaurant since the mid-2000's and while everything has pretty much gone downhill since the COVID restrictions, I still frequented the place whenever I was in the neighborhood and in the mood for Pho. After tonight's dinner though, I'll probably stop dining here for good. The portions have shrunk significantly while prices have gone up. Add on to the fact that the waitstaff will now come and ask you for more money if you tip below 15% for their lacking services. Thought it was odd but because it was only $2, we didn't think much of it until after the fact. That, and we did arrive late as we had forgotten the place now closes at 7 PM (arrived ~6:45 PM, left ~7:15 PM). There were still other diners throughout our dinner though. I didn't realize this was an actual problem with the restaurant/waitstaff until I checked the Yelp reviews. Always supported this restaurant whenever I could but it's kind of disappointing to see a place where many of us have grown up eating, become a shell of its former self. If you're reading this, you're probably wondering if you should eat at Gia Lam. The short answer is no. The long answer is hell no, save yourself the headache and go down the street to Pho BK. This is such a disgraceful restaurant with completely shameless and terrible employees. My party of 5 ate here on a Sunday for lunch and to say the service was bad would be generous. We got no menus for 10 minutes then they asked if we're ready to order. They gave us paper take out menus. We ordered some stuff and while some things were okay, many things were not. The Thai Iced Tea tastes like floor cleaner. The Pho soup was NOT hot enough to cook the raw meat sitting in the bowl. Food came out slower than other tables and came out of order with 2 bowls of pho coming out, then some appetizers, then 1 other rice entree, then 1 more bowl of soup, then ten minutes later my dish. This place is so god damn incohesive. I'm so pissed off I gave them a chance and it's unbelievable they can survive in this area. Many many good restaurants on 8th Ave and this is NOT one of them. The restaurant management would be best suited to CUT ALL THESE WAIT STAFF AND HIRE PEOPLE OFF THE STREET. My GOD I have never dealt with ruder, more uninterested waiters than this stupid restaurant. They act like you are bothering them by asking for things or ordering food. We asked for water refills multiple times and finally some lady comes over and is pouring the water so aggressively it spilled over the cups and on the table, hitting food. She said nothing! I have been coming here since 15 years + ago ....have to say ...really disappointed in their food and service now. If Yelp or any food reviews was a thing 15+ years ago, I would give it 5 stars. Service: typical service in Chinese community (no offense), do not expect good service or even basic service. Here's why: I needed help ordering because I did moved out of town for a while so I am not sure if I am ordering the item correctly (like saying the dish name). The lady (probably the owner) is very impatient with me while I am just making sure if I am getting fried rice and I stated that I want fried rice but not sure why she made it so difficult. Placed my order in person, step out for a bit (probably like 5 min), came back in , the same lady (the owner/the same one from my previous story) , asked me am I placing an order? I said I already placed and we confirmed the order one more time. She said it wasn't ready. I sat there , seeing all people who order after me , left with their order. So I went and ask them , how long till my order. It was there , sitting there all along. I waited extra 30 min for no reason. I was like...are you guys serious because it been sitting there for a long time! The lady said oh just blame the waiter (who runs back and forth and pick up phone calls). But I am not that unreasonable and I understand service isn't the way it used to be. But it's so much that it made me sleepy and after i woke up, my mouth and throat are super dry. It wasn't like that before. But you know, things changed over here years, the owner made changed, the chef might changed. Overall it sad that service and food got downgraded a lot. Their pho is decent but I rather you go to Thanh Da. Gia Lam's pho taste salty and you don't taste the bone broth with other herbs. Their pork chop over rice are okay. They used to give tomatoes and cucumber on the side but now it is just cucumber. In addition they also have fish sauce with shredded radish and carrot, but this time the sauce went bad just by the appearance and smell. I use to come here every week for a quick and fully meal of Pho and maybe some Spring rolls (best wrapped with lettuce) or Summer rolls(Shrimp & rice noodle w/ Mint(optional but have to tell waiter if you don't like)) in the side. They also have fresh fruit slush (rainbow jelly is optional) This was one of my favorite spots for Pho in 8ave until recently I have noticed that there meat is not as tender and taste a bit dry compare to before. The grill chicken with rice is also too dry and over cooked/burnt sometimes. I would still go if my friends want to eat here but I would prefer elsewhere if I made the chose. This restaurant has been around since I was a child and it always brings back memories to eat here. However, evaluating this restaurant as an adult, there's absolutely nothing special about this restaurant. When I came here in the past, I remember finding cockroaches in my pho very frequently (almost every visit). They wouldn't apologize but would just bring a new bowl of pho out.....though half was already eaten... I never recalled how nasty the waitress's attitude was until I returned as an adult. I was in the area and decided to order take out from them during this pandemic. As soon as I stepped in, she rushed me to place my order, even though there were no other customers in front, or behind me. After placing my 2 orders, I realized I misspoke for one of the orders and I told her less than a minute after my order was placed. She gave such an attitude and said in chinese, "I knew you placed the wrong thing, you should have looked at the menu clearer before telling me" and then strutted back to the kitchen to announce the changed order. When I pulled my wallet out to pay, I asked if they take cards. She said with another attitude, "No. Cash only". Classic Vietnamese restaurant on 8th Avenue and a childhood favorite of mine! They are extremely generous and does not skimp on the ingredients! Here are some of my favorites: Grilled Pork with Rice: A MUST GET! The grilled pork is a bit sweet but has a very nice charred taste. Always a very consistent dish and always well cooked. There is something about the rice. The rice aroma smells so good and it even tastes different but it's a perfect combination with the grilled pork! Beef Cube with Fried Rice: So good, so beefy, and so much food! I love that it comes extremely hot and when I smell it, the only thing on my mind is that I must devour it! This is enough to share or for two meals. Get it! Spring Rolls: Fried, crispy, and really good! It is stuffed with minced pork. Wrap it with lettuce, dip it in the sauce, and enjoy! Summer Rolls: Very well wrapped together. The shrimp is still jumbo and the ingredients are just so fresh. Pho: I personally think pho is decent here. The soup is light in flavor. When it comes to Vietnamese in the five boroughs, it's without question I always sway toward Brooklyn (#1). At one point, Gia Lam II was as close to a "go to" as I could recommend, but after several subpar experiences in the last couple of years, I will have to downgrade them to average (#2) at best. Pho is not really their specialty, but it deserves some mention because so many people will likely come for it. The broth has become blander with every visit and it takes every ounce of my will to not douse it in mint leaves, beat sprouts, cinnamon basil, cilantro, lemons (not limes), hoisin, and sriracha just to enhance the flavor. If one is extra compelled to get pho, then make sure you've got plenty of meat. Their sliced lean flank is actually quite good, along with their bits of brisket and/or fatty flank. The bo vien meatball should be avoided at all costs however, as it's always been overcooked and a tad too tough. Where Gia Lam II fails at pho, it excels in rice dishes. This means staples like bo luc lac (marinated beef cubes) or com tam (broken rice + pork?) are safe bets. I've also had some decent success with their version of the infamous Chinese yangzhou fried rice (com chien duong chau), but in all likelihood, it's really just Chinese people doing it. And that's another oddity, ordering in Viet will get one nowhere with this staff. It seems silly to not be able to even refer to dishes the way they're actually noted on the menu. Mando is the way to go, though the number system ("I'll have a #12!") will also work wonders. Kind of weird, but not at all a surprise in Brooklyn Chinatown. Keep it cash only. Try to avoid the bathrooms if you can. An added bonus to all the mediocrity: it's open super late. _________ (#1) See? I got love for BK. I would have liked to try the fried rice with BBQ pork or a noodle dish. I ordered grilled pork over egg noodles. The soup was very light with lots of flavor and the grilled pork was delicious. The menu had a whole section of Vietnamese sandwiches which would have been nice to try but not for dinner. Overall, the servers were all very polite and fast. Although owned by Chinese, this place was pretty authentic - just as good as a restaurant in Manhattan but much less crowded and probably half the price!
