It was kind of late, and I was trying to get to a pho spot that would still be open with time to eat! Pho 86 is open until 11 PM! When I got there, it was still pretty busy, but with plenty of tables to sit at. I got the number 1 Xe Lua and a number 30 Cha Gio Spring roll. The food came out fast. You can get the number one with a small bowl or a extra large bowl. I can say the extra large was pretty big. The spring rolls came out nice and hot! Pho served in a chinese style restaurant. Service was very quick - food only took a few minutes to arrive after placing order. Prices were very reasonable and competitive, and there isn't really anything bad to say about the food. We ordered 2 different pho - the standard large bowl and another smaller beef only bowl. The difference in serving sizes were definitely noticeable. The broth was very light. The cilantro flavor was also very light, which is great for my wife as she normally picks them out. I usually go to Queens for Vietnamese food but I decided to check this place out since I was in the area with my family. We ordered the Bò Lúc Lắc (beef cubes over salad), grilled pork chop over rice, grilled chicken over vermicelli, and the yu choy (Chinese greens). The dishes were very affordable and portions were large. The beef was a bit tough and the pork chop was overcooked. The chicken and greens were good though. There's still better Vietnamese food in Queens but this place was okay. This is a total no frills place but the staff were friendly and helpful (it does help to speak Chinese haha). read more

This is my go to neighborhood pho spot. Their food is always good. My favorite item on the menu is the beef cube over rice. Nicely charred onions over steak cubes with lettuce and tomato and slathered with a gravy with a umami kick. Their pho is solid. The soup is hearty and really helps revive the body on a cold day or a long night out. The place has wood carved Vietnamese art that my buddies have at home. I find it pretty awesome. Great place. Ordered the classic banh mi to go; under $9 and the taste/filling were sold for the price. Gone are the days where you can get a banh mi for $6, and one that tastes proper! My one ding is that the bread tore up my mouth; the bread is meant to have a crisp exterior but this was a bit over toasted. The fillings don't go to the very ends of the bread, but as you're eating it, it's the right ratio. Really happy with this and will be back for this! read more

I was craving Vietnamese food so I looked around the neighborhood and saw what was still open and found this spot. It was 4 of us and since it was late we didn't want to order anything heavy. We got a few summer rolls, spring roll and banh mi's. The rice paper wrap felt like it needed to be a bit softer but other than that it was pretty standard. I wasn't a big fan of the peanut sauce. Ordered lunch for take out with the office, and it was ready in 10 minutes. Pho broth was hot and the vegetable broth option comes with a lot of vegetables. I ordered the shrimp and it had about 5 or 6 large shrimp. Tad bit tough but can't be helped for takeout. It was a bit difficult to eat if you're getting take out and not going home. To my surprise this place was better than when they first opened. The quality and portion is a great value for the price point. The avocado smoothie is delicious but unfortunately not always available. They're honest and tells us because the avocados are not ripe yet. The ban bo hue has a nice kick and it's flavorful. The tomato soup noodles can be skipped. #1 big Vietnamese soup noodle bowl is humongous. The spring rolls were lovely and crispy. Finally gave this restaurant a try. Only two other tables were occupied which was great for my two kids. There's much more space here in comparison to the other Viet restaurant on 86th street. Also, this place is much cleaner. The portions here are larger and the soup tastes just a tad cleaner. Prices are cheaper so I would recommend coming or ordering here. Went to the restaurant recently. While the pho was good, the service was otherwise, especially the guy behind the cashier... very rude. Then I realized a 15% tips was automatically added to the after-tax bill regardless of the service. The guy could be as rude as he wished and you got to pay for it. BLUF: 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. Inexpensive Vietnamese food. Pho 86 offers affordable (in this era of price inflation), no-frills Vietnamese food in Bath Beach, Brooklyn. We often order a #1 "Train Pho" ($11.75; $12.79 with tax) and Grilled Chicken with Rice ($10; $10.89 with tax), and occasionally get a Vietnamese Coffee. There are better Vietnamese restaurants north and south of Pho 86 on 86th Street, namely Em Vietnamese and Phở Number 1, respectively. Both restaurants are slightly more expensive than Pho 86, offer slightly better cuisine and / or larger portions, and both have premium versions of pho that Pho 86 doesn't. However, Em Vietnamese is a smaller space and closes earlier, while parking near Phở Number 1 can be difficult at times. The food at Pho86 is good enough for the times we don't want to deal with such concerns. Complimentary tea is served. Pho 86 has two adequately maintained unisex restrooms. read more

I am a huge fan of pho and is something I could eat almost every day, even in the summer. Went for lunch on a weekday and it was not busy. Ordered the extra large pho, the bun rieu and a banh xeo. The banh xeo was crispy, nothing special. I was not a fan of the pho broth. It was lacking flavor, but it had a lot of different meats. The bun rieu, on the other hand, was really good. The broth of the bun rieu had a rich seafood taste, very flavorful. read more

The guy with the crooked teeth was insanely rude. He was yelling at me and my family for asking to separate the pho and the bean sprouts. He then proceeded to give an attitude and click his tounge at us. The meat was also way too chewy and lacked any flavor. Compared to Pho Number 1 near 24th Ave 86th street, it is so much worse. The quality and quantity of the food is completely different. Absolutely horrible restaurant. If you're craving pho, take your time and drive a few blocks down to Pho Number 1 for better food. read more

There's nothing like a hot warm bowl of soup on a cold night. We had just arrived from JFK and it was late, so we were limited on the pho restaurants that were still open at 10pm. I am very glad they open late, which is clutch. I thought it was interesting that all the employees spoke Chinese, but this is a Vietnamese restaurant. Despite that, the soup is authentic and delicious. They also have complimentary tea for the table. We also got the Pork and Veggie Spring Roll ($6.50), which was a bit disappointing. The pork didn't taste great and I only finished it because I was hungry. For my soup, I ordered the Bun Bo Hue ($12) while he got the Pho ($10). The spices in the soup is so savory with a nice kick. I've attempted to finish my review mulitple times but they've always failed to save for some reason -- nonetheless, this is my new favorite on 86th st. Their service is nice and quick for both dine-in and takeout. Their food is great. The portion is big. No complaints whatsoever. I want to specially mention their Bo Luc Lac. My husband and I feel like it is specially good compared to the other places we've tried. The beef is cooked to perfection and not dry at all and the sauce is just too good to miss. Vietnamese cuisine has always been a hit or miss in New York City for me. It was one of those days I felt not compelled to cook at home but still get a taste of home. We ordered the summer rolls with peanut sauce and the grilled pork chop with pork egg custard patty. Normally I always go for the pork over rice dishes because that's my weakness versus everyone ordering the pho or beef cubes (the usuals). This place did not hit the mark for me. It was a bit empty even during the dinner rush while dining here and I asked myself why that was the case since 86th Street Chinatown restaurants were always exploding with business. My grilled pork chop was ok. It was much drier than usual, wasn't marinated long enough and doesn't have the special charness on it like I love my grilled meats to taste like. The custard pork patty was what I enjoyed the most from this dish. I never got to taste summer rolls but that peanut sauce did look very luscious with flavors. This place in terms of flavor wasn't bad the last time I dined here. Maybe the chef who used to cook for this establishment left and settled somewhere else. I'll try the beef cubes next time to see if there is any oomph to this place. read more

I came to pho 86 wanting to get a banh mi for take-out. After talking with one of the staff they asked if it was okay if I wanted to try the combo and without hesitation, it sounded good to me. The banh mi definitely had some unique elements that aren't in your usual banh mi places. Banh mi was solid and crispy but I think for its price it definitely is not worth it. Whether it's the size or not enough filling, something felt super lackluster from the banh mis I've had in the past. The spring rolls were more heavily battered and chewier than other spring rolls I have tried from other pho restaurants which are more on the flakier side. Still decent, but definitely had to use my teeth and chew more than usual which I did not like. I got charged $16 for both of these items, which I know it's new york but let's be real this food is not worth $16. I was quite surprised when I got charged that so that definitely threw me off. In addition, while waiting for my food I had to wait about 25-30 minutes. I saw a table of 2 come in after me, sit down, and order and they got their food before me. The restaurant location is closed to train stations and bus stops, very convenient if you take public transportation, but street parking is hard. The server was not kids friendly and he seemed to be annoyed when we asked him for extra folks and small bowls for our little kids. The price for the pho soups and other dishes seemed reasonable, but the portion of the pho soup was really small. We had to order an extra noodle to fill us up. Surprisingly the size of the extra noodle was actually bigger than the amount of noodle in the pho soup. The taste of the soup was okay, but nothing really noticeable. The pork chop was the only positive things here. It is tasty and soft, not chewy at all. The seating was not comfortable. I was back to back with the table behind us and my son's chair was against the wall and he could not move further away from the table. According to my son, he was squished sitting there. absolutely would never come again. been a local around this area about 6 years now and never have this restaurant been this bad of quality. most of all it's this mid age guy at the cashier, while taking our order he kept giving us the biggest attitude. i asked for 3 bowls of pho, one without greens and he started giving us attitude like "okay?". we were confused and asked him is that alright and he kept repeating himself while getting louder everytime. at the end while asking for the check, he basically threw the check at us. we tipped the guy cleaning the tables and didn't even bother tipping the other cashier guy a dime. read more

Typical pho spot. I got the regular pho but regular size for $11 and it had a lot less stuff than I was expecting. I am used to ordering the large pho for $2 more but I wasn't very hungry today. We ordered as soon as we sat down, and received two giant bowls of pho within 5 minutes. The pho here is pretty standard - not outstanding, but not bad either. It's exactly what you would expect. The broth did seem to be on the sweeter end, which threw me off a bit. It was easily masked with a bit of hoisin&hot sauce though. The broth had good depth of flavor otherwise and was piping hot. Noodles are abundant! The meat here was a bit tough, & they maybe skimped out a bit on the tripe. Overall, great for a quick lunch stop if you only have about 30 minutes.
