When it's rainy out, dark, gloomy, and cold. There is nothing better than a nice hot bowl of soup to warm up the soul. The pho was overall "okay". It felt like it was missing something (maybe a few extra sprinkles of msg or something?) or some more fish sauce. All else were cooked well. Noodles were el dente and meats where cooked well within the hot broth. Was a bit disappointed in amount of garnish received (this was for two orders). Only one stem worth of basil and first time I ever was given a lemon in place of a lime. The spring roll though was fantastic. Hot, fresh, and crispy! Only mistake I made was ordering only 4 pieces instead of the 8! I like how they also give you individual fish sauce bowls that way you can double/triple dip all you want without grossing out whomever you're eating with. Def recommend getting the spring rolls. Chicken Pho was alright. The soup tasted like salty water, wasn't so flavorful. The waiter messed up our order and the owner came over and yelled at him in front of everyone. He then proceeded to yell at the chefs in an extremely loud manner. I found it to be very unprofessional, I felt sorry for the waiter it was a mistake. Came here with hubby because he really wanted Vietnamese, specifically a rice dish. He wanted bo luc lac (beef cubes over rice) and added fried egg for extra $. I ordered the chicken lemongrass for myself. Turns out, the manager wrote fried eggs for both meals and charged for both. I wasn't expecting it but I do love eggs. You would have to check your order carefully and be more clear. I was okay with it, but for people that usually place orders of the food, they wouldn't be happy for something extra they didn't ask for and charge for it. Food overall was okay. My friend who is well versed in Vietnamese cuisine consistently laments the lack of good Vietnamese food in New York. "That can't be" I always tell him, considering there's no dearth of Vietnamese restaurants and people in New York, particularly in Bensonhurst. Now that I reflect on it though, I've had a steady stream of phos, banh mis, and vermicelli bowls that ooze mediocrity from first to last bite. What gives? This was no exception at Pho 86. I was quite excited to get my grilled shrimp vermicelli bowl because I love the sweet and charcoaly flavor of meats in Vietnamese cuisine. Sadly, the flavor was sorely lacking in my dish, and the shrimp were also quite overcooked. The dish was overly simple, with only a few pieces of shrimp on a bed of noodles in the dish. Some lettuce and peanuts would've amped it up a bit. We also ordered a couple of bowls of pho for the table and there was a scarcity of noodles in each dish. It wouldn't be enough to sate most appetites. For a no frills restaurant like this where the average dish is less than $10 service is not something I'm concerned with, but there was one thing that bothered me a lot. Everytime our server brought out a dish, his thumb was planted firmly in the bowl, touching the food and errthang. We went for an early dinner and I came back for lunch a few days after. The early dinner around 5:30 will give you amble seatings, quick service and finish your meal in peace before the real dinner crowd; which seems to kick in around 6:45'ish... We tried the signature Pho (medium bowl) for my husband, grilled chicken pho for my 10yr old (he wasn't into it...) and I got the beef cubes over fried rice. The Pho broth was flavorful and a good portion. My beef cubes was pretty good! Savory and tender... however the fried rice was a bit lacking; didn't have much taste and not dry enough. The grilled chicken was tender and decent... but the pho alone was too mild... my son said it was too bland. The spring rolls were perfect! Crispy, flavorful and delicious. Alone or with lettuce. Must get. Also got my fav salted plum soda!! So good! My solo lunch, I had the Bun Rieu... I've had much better version elsewhere. It was OK, on a cold day... decent pho. The 86st area already has plenty of Vietnamese restaurants to choose from, but Pho 86 stands out with the quality of their soup noodles. Their #1 Pho was packed with flavor and the soup was somewhat sweet. Their #1 is a VERY big bowl, contains a lot of noodles, and it's worth the price point. However, my partner pointed out the lack of beef tendon and tripe in the soup. We also got to try their spring rolls, but it was okay. It was very pale and lightly fried, and it could've used more flavor. Overall, I'm very impressed with the soup broth flavors! Pho 86 is one of those places that seems to work best as a take-out, rather than a sit-down place. There isn't much of a decor or ambience to enhance the experience, and the customer service to ranges from good to mediocre. We ordered a beef pho (#1) which was absolutely massive, and which Rozena liked more and more as she consumed it. We also ordered the curry chicken with bread (#36), advertised as a banh mi, and it's just curry meant to be dipped in bread. The bread was crunchy with a soft interior, and warm. The curry was good; however the chicken felt plain, and I wish it were marinated in more spices. The final dish, three types of beef in rice vermicelli (#75) seemed like a delicious choice, but was ultimately disappointing. The beef pieces weren't juicy, felt a bit too chewy, and I'm not sure I liked all of them. The place isn't pricey, and that's a big plus point. But I see it more as a convenient food for delivery/pickup, lacking in some aspects as far as a sit-down restaurant is concerned. read more

Not a lot of places around Brooklyn are open for indoor dining so when we were scouting for a spot for lunch, this place seemed perfect. Seemed being the keyword. The pho was alright, the spring rolls were a bit chewy, and the crepe is a definite "never order". Why? Because 1. It was supposed to have pork and shrimp but it only had shrimp, worker said they don't use pork anymore because it spoils easily (uhhh... Isn't it your job to keep ingredients fresh for the dishes??!!) And 2. There was a coconut flavor in there that made us suspect they used coconut oil to fry the pancake, which is really off-putting. Bleh. I didn't mind the pho but the beef slices were very tough and hard to chew. stopped by for lunch after a friend recommended pho86! im a sucker for bun bo hue but today i opted for the bun rieu and absolutely loved it. not sure why the dac biet + meat balls is more expensive than the extra large dac biet lol but the pho broth is spot on. usually when a dish is heavy on the fish sauce smell, it turns me off - which was what happened with the bun rieu but its just in the very beginning. you just have to dig in. definitely will come back for the bun bo hue :) read more

I find that Vietnamese food is best eaten fresh at the restaurant (or made at home, if you know how) and takeout just doesn't do the food justice (especially with noodles and broth). However, with times as they are, I'll take what I can get. Pho 86 has been a favorite takeout choice for me these last few months because it's just a short walk away. Everything is affordable, always packaged well, and is hot as possible. I like to get the rice vermicelli with grilled pork and fried spring rolls. Sometimes I get pho, and lately my family tried their banh mi (Vietnamese cold cut sandwich) and it was fantastic. I'm a creature of habit when it comes to ordering Vietnamese food, but I would definitely like to branch out and try more items on their menu. I'm super picky when it comes to my pho and I've always been disappointed by the pho game in NY, but I have found my new favorite place!! I love the pho here - the noodles are Al dente and the broth is rich and flavorful. The brisket is also veryyy tender. Some might find the portion sizes small, but I personally love the small size. I usually can never finish pho but their size is perfect for me. The restaurant itself is very clean and the staff is friendly and nice. Staple in the area but I wouldn't necessarily crave coming here. We come here to fulfill a craving for Vietnamese pho. They're always quite busy and everything we have tried is decent, can't complain about. If you dine in you'll potentially see a lady swatting flies but that's all. Spring rolls are nice and fresh, pork chops are tasty, the broth in the pho is more on the sweeter side which is fine. I also noticed I don't feel as dehydrated which is a good sign. Means they either use less or don't use MSG at all in their broth compared to the other restaurants. It does often feel as though they are understaffed. We've come on random weeknights and it's just as busy as weekends. I also like that you can usually find parking easily in front because that's where all the pigeons hang out. Came here in a Friday night around 7pm and it was moderately busy. Waiters were still attentive and food came out fairly quickly. We tried the spring rolls, #1 pho and bun rieu. My husband enjoyed the pho and appreciated that it came out piping hot since he gets the meat on the side. The noodles and ingredients were a good portion. I liked my bun rieu - broth was good and came out piping hot as well. After hearing about a new Viet spot in Bensonhurst, I decided to give it a shot. We arrived to a spacious and only half filled restaurant one weekday night. I ordered my usual order - the number 1 pho. I don't know what saddened me more. The sad portion of noodles that would be sufficient to feed a child, but priced at normal adult prices. Or the mediocre broth, which is a must have combo of noodles and soup in Asian culture. Or the tough chewy tendons that I took one bite out of and immediately fished out of my bowl and put aside because they were unfit for human consumption. I'd need the strength of a dog's jaw in order to eat those. I had high hopes for this restaurant, but was severely let down. read more

Pretty good! A few staff members from Phot Tay Ho spin off and I much prefer this location. The pho is on point with the right texture for noodles and thinly sliced beef the way it should be. I also ordered the Bun Rieu here and the broth had more flavor than the one they serve at Pho Tay Ho. Ingredients were fresh as was the shrimp (not frozen, hooray!) Love the modern decor and closer location which is more easily accessible for us since we live in the neighborhood. Will bring the family back to try sometime as well. They're just starting out so I do expect continued improvement but the staff was timely and on point. The wait-time was not long on a Saturday afternoon with moderate traffic. If you live around the area, you will know the other popular Pho restaurant and some of the staff here will look very familiar. So I guess some of the staff there decided to branch off. Maybe it's newly opened, there is a special team spirit with the staff here. They are hustling taking orders, clearing tables, bringing out bowls pho, and fulfilling takeout orders. It's just a heart-warming experience. I would say, though, that two of the familiar staff continued their stoic facial expressions. They are not mean, but don't expect them to crack a Walmart smile. The menu is identical and the quality is good. A good hearty bowl of pho is just the right kind of comfort food for the winter. The service is good and the food is quick. The portion is just right and they don't skimp on the meats. I would come back to try their cha gio which is one of my favorite appetizers. I would think that this location will bring a lot of business as it's close to the train station in a more bustling part of 86th street. It took this restaurant several months to open because of gas company issues so I really want this local business to do well! read more

Like all other restaurants in NYC, this spot is a takeout only. My friend and I ordered and within minutes, they gave us our order. I guess they are lacking in business (which ease, help out local business stay in business!) or what my friend and I got is the usual (which is probably true too). We ordered two beef pho to go and when we got home, we didn't really need to heat up the soup with noodles (you still can if you like it steaming hot). I first tried their beef pho a few months ago. It wasn't my favorite because their broth was very sweet. I also tried their lemongrass chicken which was very sweet without much savory flavor. I came back for a banh mi. They have a little handwritten sign that said their prices increased next to their paper menu box. But actual price changes are not on the menus themselves. A plain banh mi went from $5.50 to $7.00. It's about half the size in thickness compared to other restaurants. The filling was the smallest portion I've ever seen in a banh mi. The pickled vegetables are thick and have no flavor. You get one layer of each cold cut. It doesn't fold over or cover the entire bread. There's no pate, just mayo with one spring of cilantro. It was a disappointing sandwich. The bread they use was good enough. It was chewy and had good elasticity. It's too bad the filling didn't measure up. I gave this place a shot and it wasn't for me. Service across the vietnamese restaurants between 19th ave and 24th ave are pretty much the same. But the food quality is drastically different. I'll know to walk over to the 23rd ave restaurants over this one next time. There's about 3 clustered on one block that offer better food than this one. read more

First impressions were great right off the start, I got seated in a very timely manner and given ample time to look across the menu. But after I was done looking the waiters was standing at the back having a conversation and had me wait probably 3-4 minutes of trying to get their attention. Luckily one of the employees that I recognized at the register was from pho tay ho that night and just rang me up on what I wanted. Service Food came fast I got the #3 regular bowl and there was just this blood stain on the side of the bowl as seen on the picture.... that kinda lowered my appetite a bit but I brushed it off as it was nothing.. continuing on the bowl I took the pho and put it over the meat so it can cook more to a medium in the broth as I usually do! But long behold the broth wasn't even hot enough.. I called the waiter that was busy talking in the back from earlier and I told him "The broth was not hot enough to cook the beef" and the beef was visibly red - pink about 30-70 ratio and he had the audacity to talk back and say something along the lines of "why didn't you tell me sooner" Food Quality The coffee was perfect as expected and was made by the employee I recognized from pho tay ho. The dac biet was great but I think they took away the meat that was undercooked and just replaced the broth with hotter broth when they took it back but regardless the meat and pho is as expected The menu It's almost if not identical to the generic Vietnamese restaurant in terms of selection and pricing is also very similar I might come back and give it another chance since I live close by but it definitely didn't leave a good first impression to directly choose to go back to this place. read more

I've gotten takeouts from this place 3 times and have tried these items and recommend them all: 1. #57 - grilled slice pork w/ tiny rice vermicelli. The pork slices were sliced thin, grilled and had a sweet savory taste that reminded me of pork jerky. It comes with fresh pieces of lettuce and mint leaves, pickles and a dipping sauce. I think you are supposed to make a lettuce wrap using the grilled pork slices, the small pieces of rice vermicelli, mint leaves and pickles then dip it in the sauce to eat. That's how I ate it and it was delish! It normally comes with peanuts and I always asked for no peanuts. 2. Papaya salad with shrimp - Pretty good. The papaya were fresh and crunchy and you get a good amount of the papaya. Many other places will add other fillers like green beans or tomato to a papaya salad so you don't get much papaya. The shrimp did not have a lot of taste but they were fresh and plenty. The sauce was not too sour which was good. Again, it normally comes with a sprinkle of peanuts but I always asked for no peanuts. 3. Salted plum soda - another yelper said this was yummy so I decide to try. Wow, It was a new taste sensation! It tasted sour and SALTY! I am not used to this taste combination in a beverage so the first couple of sips were a surprise. But then the taste grew on me. Before I knew it I drank the whole thing. This was our first time ordering from this restaurant because we just happen to be around the area. Oh boy, what a different it makes. We always have the same order whenever we eat vietnamese. We get the thin sliced pork, spring rolls over rice noodles. When we opened the conatiner, our jaw dropped, literally it was all noodles and 4 tiny pieces of pork, like 4 pieces of pizza pepperoni toppings on top of the mountains of noodles.
