I came here per the recommendation of some Yelpers. And naturally, when I got here, I was adamant about trying the Bun Bo Hue. My dining partner had the large combination pho. Honestly, my dish was a little disappointing -- maybe because my expectations were so high. The broth was good as was the vermicelli noodles and some of the meat. I had a blob of bone that I had to messily nom through. There could also be more 'stuff' in the broth as well. I was expecting more of a burst of flavors. This place has been around for as long as I can remember. Really, probably at least 15 years. I used to just go to Thanh Da II for their banh mi's (closer to 8th ave), but this original location is where to go if you want to sit down for a casual meal. The special pho (basically just every type of meat they've got, including rare beef stomach and tripe) was pretty good. The bowls aren't as big as they used to be, but that seems to be a trend. I like their sandwiches but not their noodles or spring rolls. Their soup base for noodles seems very oily and fattening. The sandwiches is decent and average. I like the one on 43rd street better. I feel like their food standards went down because this use to be my favorite place for viet bread. When you order via the phone, it's always very rushed. I used to come here all the time when I younger for their Banh mi when it used to be 3.75. The price only went up 2$ in 10 years so im not complaining. It's the best you can get in New York. It's crunch, meaty, vinegary- everything you want in a Banh mi. The pho here is pretty good as well. The noodles are a bit firmer than other places and the broth is definitely fattier. The four stars is based on the food. The place is a hole in the wall and majority of the staff are cold. That being said the food is very good. After living in a Vietnamese household for years I can say this is some of the most authentic viet food around. I've been here twice now and have not been disappointed. This place has been opened for many years and had a second location on 57th street 8ave but only serves small snacks, viet sandwiches and drinks. Mainly for take out. This place has the best pho in town. Their portions are decent size and their spring rolls are my favorite. I had their viet sandwiches before and it was just as good as their second location (where I mainly go to get viet sandwiches) The prices has increased a bit now and they made their menu more presentable. This is my go-to bahnmi restaurant! I always order to go and call about 10 minutes in advanced. It is a bit of a wait if you order on the spot and wait for it but the bread comes nice and toasty. My favorite is the BBQ pork sandwich. The meat is always seasoned perfectly and the vegetables are cold and crisp. Some times the pickled vegetables I get at other restaurants are kind of soggy and bland but theirs are always the right amount of tang. The cilantro/parsley adds an extra flavor profile and they ask if you would like to add jalapenos (: I'm sad to hear that some yelp-ers received poor service here but I've never had a bad experience with them. There was a small bug in one of the meals. I know Asians can be disrespectful towards one another (family wise) but to be disrespectful towards strangers/customers??? It could be that I was sensitive since my grandma recently got heart surgery and that server was just awful. It's not every day that I pass through (my former home) Brooklyn and decide to actively search for a place to eat. We were on our way back from Satan.. I man Staten Island and were in the mood for some pho. Naturally, the blazing reviews coerced us into stopping at Thanh Da. Overall, the experience was ok. The venue itself is small and actually reminds me of old eateries in Southeast Asia (sans glass store front). There is a counter where you can get some sweets and things to go, and there is a small eat-in area. The bathroom and condiments on the tables were... also like an old eatery in Southeast Asia (and needs some extra TLC). The counter service was good, but the eat-in service was a little sparse. The staff tended to stay on the counter side so it was hard to get their attention. We had to order the standards: the bahn mi (with extra meat, since many reviews commented on their skimp); pho with all of the trimmings, and spring rolls. The items were good, but not outstanding as the ratings would suggest. The pho's broth was straight forward and light. It actually tasted more like a beef broth instead of a complex pho broth (with cinnamon, star anise, etc). I wish it were a little hotter since some the fresh eye round was still pink at the end of the meal. The bahn mi was good but needed the extra meat. We like ours on the spicier end and needed to ask for sides of jalapeño. The spring rolls were ok. Thanh Da uses the thin, Thai spring rolls skin (which I love) but the filling tasted like there was taro inside - which was interesting. Like I said: Overall, not bad. What a neat spot to get a pho fix. Real close to the 8th ave train station and easy to locate with it's big red awning and glass windows. There is a limited number of tables, but I haven't seen it really crowded yet. Real laid back place with responsive waitresses. Also, well ventilated interior. Menu is easy to read and pricing is very fair, especially for their quality. Highly recommend the big noodle bowl of a quality abundance of pho, tasty broth, and assorted cuts of meats. Thanks to Thanh Da, I will never step foot in a no frills/hole-in-a-wall type of place. I was looking forward to grabbing vermicelli from this place based on the rave reviews but that was quickly cut short when I found a long strand of hair in my bowl of Bun Bo Hue... I walked in, there was no server in sight so I assumed I had to order at the register. When I informed her that I wanted noodle soup, she told me to sit down and a server will be right with me. The moment I sat down, a random man who was eating noodles earlier got up and gave me my menu. My boyfriend and I ended up ordering Bun Bo Hue and Cha Gio Thit Nuon. The Cha Gio Thit Nuon came first, it was okay, I've definitely had better ones in Chinatown, there wasn't much flavor, the spring rolls were crispy though. The pork could've been more savory, it was a bit bland. The Bun Bo Hue came a few minutes afterward, I took a bite of the beef but then I saw a piece of hair in my noodles. I was in shock, this never happened to me before and I was really hoping I was seeing wrong... I asked my boyfriend to look and he indeed saw the same thing. Feeling intimidated by their never ending paper signs of " NO REFUNDS " being posted everywhere and knowing this was a hole in a wall kind of a place I knew customer service was the last of their priorities. He asked me what I wanted to do about it. I asked him to replace it or exchange it so he took it back but I could tell he didn't really want to. The guy from the next table paid the check and was on his way out and told the server that he saw the truth that the hair was really from the noodles and not from my head. I can't believe that the server didn't believe me and wanted me to continue eating the noodle soup EVEN after I found the hair in it. This establishment failed in business 101; no matter what the customer is always right. I honestly didn't want to get another bowl but knowing it was no refunds only I'm 100% sure he would charge me for the noodles regardless. A few moments later, a " new " bowl of Bun Bo Hue arrived. I examined it very carefully to make sure it was clear of any hair. But for some reason I had a feeling they might have spit in it or it was the same bowl of Bun Bo Hue that I sent back, just reorganized... Guess I'll never know.. ignorance is a bliss right? I tried to be in a better spirit even after this disastrous meal but the ambiance was killed by loud cashiers screaming into the phone as they take orders and more people in the background screaming about the Bun Bo Hue being sent back. It also didn't help that the server gave me the stinkeye the whole time while I ate. I've never felt more uncomfortable and unhappy eating at a restaurant than I have at Thanh Da. My boyfriend saw this and when we paid, he decided to not tip. The server tried to stop us from leaving and demanded for gratuity. We left regardless because of how angry my boyfriend was and how upset I was from this meal.. I would avoid this place at all cost, seriously how can you run a business like that? ** The Pho ** As a longtime pho enthusiast, I've often been a bit disappointed by Manhattan pho, and have long had hopes that outer-borough pho would somehow magically be better. Thanh Da came on my radar after mentions from several fellow Yelpers, so I made the trek. I had the pho tai and am happy to report that it was pretty good... but sad to report that I did not have that longed-for wow moment, when I first sipped the broth. The meat was a little chewy, and did not arrive as glaringly rare as I think pho tai beef ideally ought to. (As for the noodles, I have no idea, someone really ought to school me on what separates the mediocre from the good.) Overall I didn't think this pho tai was in a different or better class than my long-time Chinatown fave Pho Bang, or newcomer Luu's in Kips Bay, with its spicier broth. ** The Other Menu Items ** - Avocado milkshake. Delicious! Who knew. Didn't taste a whit of avocado, though. - Bun Bo Hue. Apparently this is not often on menus so it's the thing to get. My friend ordered this and loved it. I had a few sips--very good, very strong flavor, not sure I could have a whole bowl though. - Chicken Banh Mi. No good. Skip it. When I found out that they actually had another place nearby that was a full Vietnamese restaurant I just had to try it out. Wish I didn't. Where do I start? I started with a appetizer consisting of fried spring roll. Nothing wrong with the taste except for the fact that there wasn't much meat in it. Very nicely crisp fried skin. Just wish there was more filling. Pho. One of my all time favorite comfort food, especially on a cold day like today. I think I have to rate this as my second least favorite place for this noodle soup dish, first place being this god awful place that I went to in San Francisco's Chinatown a few years back. I still shudder to think of eating Pho at that place. The noodles here was way thicker then what I am accustomed to for Pho. The beef, normally sliced paper thin to cook easily from the hot broth, was about 2 to 3 times thicker then normal and was from a different cut ( can't figure out from where ) then what is used at other Vietnamese Restaurants. The different cut and thicker slices makes the meat chewier then what it needs to be. It also makes the beef harder to get cooked in the broth. I just gave up waiting and ate mine with a little pink left in it. The saving grace of the Pho was that the broth was fine. My friend that was with me had some kind of seafood curry soup. Don't know the name of it since I wasn't paying attention but he was complaining nonstop about how watery it was. I took a little taste from his dish and have to agree. 3 dishes. 3 disappointments. Would have given the place a 2 but added a extra star because they serve that awesome Bai Mi sandwich here too. Come here for the sandwich only. read more

There are two ways to approach a meal at Thanh Da, either trying to secure a table and taking a look at their regular menu, or grabbing a bánh mì for takeout. Of the latter, every sandwich is priced at $3.75 which seems to be the going rate for Sunset Park these days. I started with the #1 sandwich, the normal bánh mì, just to sample how the place handled making them. I am not so impressed by their wrapper, just a boring baguette that was not fluffy and only toasted a bit. Inside the content was more promising, but was not stuffed full of vegetables and pickled items as much as I would prefer. The meats were good, and the grilled pork inside was especially tasty, sweetened to perfection. The sandwich is served very warm and fresh, and should be eaten immediately. I have only sat down once here in this always crowded restaurant, a popular location among the Chinese in Sunset Park. They serve all the normal items and everything is done at least averagely. The rolls (both cha giò ($3.50 for 4) and goi cuôn ($3.25 for 2)) seem made at least half a day before, but of good ingredients. Their fish and peanut sauces are both up to par.
