I see the fun attempt to bring a younger crowd to the restaurant, but the food pricing and service staff need some improvement Pricing: $2 for a pot of tea? If the first pot is free, 2nd pot of tea for $2 is easier to understand. $15 for a pork chop banh mi or a $12 regular banh mi or $16 for 2 thin pork chops with rice + tomato + kirby slices . Wow, looked like prices for Manhattan restaurants. Service: Servers did not bring out waters or basils or bean sprouts until asked. The staff also need some more training and practice with their new computer POS system, but understandable growing pains. I recall Pho Hoai is the FIRST Vietnamese restaurant on Avenue U, but now at least two other Vietnamese restaurants also populated, I recommend keeping the prices affordable ($10 banh mi, or if $15 banh mi- add fries or 2x spring rolls for the St Edmund high school kids) and having better service. Definitely not the best pho around, but will do in a pinch. The broth here unfortunately lacks a bit of depth and is not super flavorful. For the #1, there were about 1-2 pieces of each kind of meat, but no tripe or tendon. Beansprouts come with mint instead of basil. The grilled porkchops here were aromatic, but also paper thin and not too flavorful. Total for pho, grilled porkchop over rice, and a small spring roll came out to about $50. Parking around here is not the easiest, but this looks to be more popular as a takeout spot. read more

Back when I lived in the area, this was my go-to spot for pho. I went again today with my family after a very veery long while. The food was still alright. Staff was good for the most part, all except for one person -- a lady with long hair. I do not know what her position is but it seemed like she had a lot of say considering she was bossing a nice gentleman around. Not only did she lack common sense, she was one of the ruder people I've met working at any pho restaurant. She was the main one serving our table. She made the ordering process more difficult than it needed to be and carried an attitude. When serving of the food came to play--- we had 4 adults and 3 toddlers with us. Had last second plans to have lunch with my BFF. We ordered our favorites. For me, it's the summer shrimp roll and the crispy squid. They taste a lot fresher when you dine in. He likes the spring rolls. I like to eat them wrapped in the fresh lettuce and mint leaves dipped into the orange sauce. He tried the beef cubes with fried rice. I always order my favorite, grilled pork chop with Chinese sausage and a fried egg. The service is always excellent at this place. The dishes come out quickly, and the servers are very attentive. Food was OK. Not great, but also not terrible. However, what was terrible was the service. Our waiter was good, but the owner kept frowning at us and generally had a sour puss. I'm not sure she was actually mad at us in particular, but she was just generally unfriendly and not welcoming at all. What further irked me was the bill handed to us by the frowning woman -- the bill was just a dollar amount: no itemization at all; not even tax. I had no way of checking if we were overcharged. No way of computing the tip. It was just a single number. I honestly don't see myself going back -- there's a few Vietnamese places in the area, and next time I need to scratch my banh mi itch, there are better options close by. Banh Mi Dac Biet: C+ The house special Banh Mi. Sandwich was much too dry. Banh Mi Thjt Heo Nuong: B- Grilled pork Banh Mi. Better flavor than the house special banh mi, but suffered from the same flaw: it was too dry. Cha Gio: B+ Vietnamese spring rolls. They were quite good, but came out of the kitchen room temperature; I wish they were warmer. Xe Lua Pho: B Your standard Pho. Good (but it's hard to have bad Pho). The meat had a little gristle. One of my favorite go-to spots for Vietnamese in Brooklyn!!! Sometimes I dine in but more often than not, I order take out. They have generous portions for pho. I usually order #1 which is the "extra big bowl." The broth is so flavorful and it's literally one of my favorite comfort foods. I also love the spring rolls here. So crispy and good. They also provide lettuce so you can make lettuce wraps with rolls and dip them in sauce! We also got calamari here, but beware - they're usually hot and fresh so wait a few minutes before you eat them! The service is always quick and the food always comes out piping hot. The beef or chicken lemongrass are my go-tos but I seen they have a shrimp option too as a full place, rice on the side... and it was sooo good. They are generous with the sauce and it is delicioussssss I was able to share with my bf with an extra rice on the side . The chicken lemongrass plate (rice plates are great for one person) always does what it's supposed to but the beef?! & the shrimp?! *chefs kiss* Of course spring rolls are ALWAYS apart of the order (not pictured) and I tried the dried longan drink, it was interesting. This was the first time i have gone to this place. Upon entering the place was very clean and nice. There was also a very nice scent and empty. The staff had a few pick up/deliveries order waiting. I ordered immediately and the staff lady was nice and quick to assist. I ordered something simple as it was the first time i came. I ordered a simple chicken and broccoli dish pver white rice. They didn't even call me to ask what I wanted instead of the durian shake. They just gave me an iced coffee instead (which is probably cheaper than what I paid for the durian shake). The pho was good. The soup is really what makes it pho to me. It's clear but flavorful. The grilled chicken was also good, but very obviously oily. There are two Vietnamese restaurants in the neighborhood which have been our go-tos for at least 15 years. We stopped going to the other one once their quality declined. It seems as though the quality here is declining as well. We ordered a pick-up order via Uber Eats. Here's everything we ordered: Cha gio - this was really good. No complaints here. It was still hot and crispy after spending 20 minutes in a takeout container Grilled pork chop over rice - pork chops are overcooked. It was dry and tough Marinated beef cubes over fried rice - beef was also very tough. Also, it was as if they didn't really marinate the beef cubes or cook with it, but poured the sauce on top instead. All the sauce was on the bottom of the fried rice, making it super salty and soggy, and leaving the beef very bland Banh mi - the filling was good. I must say, they probably give more meat than most other places that serve banh mi do. But the bread was hard. It was almost as if they bread was starting to go stale, so they tried to toast it to cover it up. Be careful with this one - you may break a tooth Pho combo - this was probably the best dish out of everything, and everyone else agreed. They also do not skimp on the meat here either, and the broth really hit the spot on a cool, autumn day. My only peeve was that they gave a lemon instead of a lime for the pho but not a deal breaker (I just prefer lime with Vietnamese food) I think if you just stick to the pho and spring rolled, and avoid the grilled meats, you should be okay. read more

They didn't give us a receipt when we took our order home, so we couldn't even double-check if the pricing was correct. Returning two hours later, I asked the boss to double-check the bill, only to discover they had overcharged us by nearly $40. This error raised suspicions; it's difficult to believe it was unintentional. When questioned, their response seemed dishonest. I suspect they may deliberately overcharge customers, hoping it goes unnoticed. If anyone decides to try this place, be careful of getting overcharged. Note: We are frequent customers of this place. Usually places big group orders and often thought that this place was too pricey for the amount of food we ordered. Finally decided to verify how the price was calculated. Pho came in a giant bowl with all the veggie fixings and generous amounts of thin sliced meat/ partially rare (rarer is better of course) and bits of tendon, onions & scallions in a fragrant sweet broth. The spring rolls were miniature and I can eat an order alone myself tbh but quite finger licking good- I think they keep them teeny weeny to keep you coming back for more. We always order the fried spring rolls. The large comes with 8 and they are my favorite i can eat them for days. Wrap it up in lettuce, dip it in their fish? sauce with carrot and bite into that hot (so be careful) spring roll. Cannot go wrong with these. Just like any good local Vietnamese restaurant in NYC, but sometimes that can be a good thing. And that's exactly the case here! I've frequented Pho Hoai quite a number of times and their menu is basically a replica of many other Vietnamese restaurants I've been to in the city. Not only are the items listed the same as other restaurants, but the pictures too. They serve your typical pho bowls, appetizers, vermicelli and beef/chicken/vegetarian rice dishes. My wife and I have had our fair share of pho, vermicelli, spring rolls, summer rolls and pork chop over rice dishes and everything has always been tasty, prepared right and exactly as we love it. Although the #1 Xe Lua (Combination extra big bowl) is always the most popular of dishes at a restaurant like Pho Hoai, our new favorite by far is the Bun Cha Gio (spring rolls with lettuce on rice vermicelli). Not only is vermicelli the choice of noodle, but it's served with 5 spring rolls to boot. If you're more of a rice dish person, then go with the Com Suon Nuong Lap Xuong Apla (grilled pork chop with sausage & egg over rice). The service has always been quick and cordial here. The waiters are not going to go out of their way to please you, but they'll get your order to you promptly. Overall, Pho Hoai is a great option if you're looking for a relatively inexpensive and tasty Viet meal. read more

So it's been awhile since I've updated this review and as I look it over, I cry about the idea of how much things "used to be" like the old bag that I am becoming... The beef cubes with rice is still good - even better with friend rice the way I get it. The soups are still good, but leave me hungry because it's very few strands of like hot pot meat. I've become more fancy and started getting the pork summer rolls which seem to task much better than the shrimp ones to me now. Overall, I've been coming here like 2-4 times a month - sometimes more when I'm craving. It's fine for now, but the prices are seem so crazy to me for Asian food. There's nothing better than a steaming hot bowl of pho in the cold winter months of New York. Pho Hoai not only provides a perfect bowl of pho but also provides various authentic and delicious flavors of Vietnam. My favorites here besides the pho are the fried spring rolls, marinated beef cubes over rice, and the grilled pork on rice cakes. Not the most beautiful decor, but it works. Service is a little gruff at times, but there may be a language component to which to attribute at least some of that. Food is generally delicious. You must get the seafood soup! It's got the tanginess that I love along with a delightfully tasty array of seafood. Spring rolls are also quite delicious when you dress them up in the lettuce leaf, with a mint leaf, and dipped in the accompanying sauce. The chicken banh mi sandwich is also surprisingly good and worth a try, although that's more the case if you're taking food to go or ordering in. When you're in the restaurant, try more of the hot, fresh dishes than the sandwich. The key to the banh mi, however, is the delectable bread that is so airy and light. read more
