Every time I visit, we always see something we didn't notice before and strikes up some unique conversation. I always (and probably forever) order the Chicken Fried Steak! It tastes homemade, savory and satisfying. Imagine a huge portion and then double it - that's TEXAZ for ya. You're lucky to eat half of the dinner portion, but the price can't be beat. Let's say that this is homestyle cooking. The food was ample in portion but needs a little lift. The salad is very basic and bland. Needs a little color and flavour. There was not a lot of excitement from the start. I was craving a great steak and I had never been here before. The Ribeye (My favorite cut) was lacking in the quality of the beef. It tastes like grocery store Holstein and looked like it when it cooked up too. The meal covered my hunger bit I felt this place could be so much better with just a little tweeking. The decor I loved and it screams Texas. It was fun to read the articles and see all of the hats hanging from the ceiling. As always, I may have just caught it on an off day. I'm new to.the Phoenix area and Texaz Grill like many other eateries are in walking distance from where I live so I ordered take out so I can.have a relaxing movie night. I ordered the chicken fried steak, fried okra and mash potatoes. It came with a salad and a biscuit. When I went to pick it up I was checking out the look of the establishment it's really neat. Biz cards on the ceiling, I'm mean its covering the just about the entire ceiling, baseball caps repping Tx and so many other great souvenir pieces The next time I will go in and eat to take pics of the nice establishment. I saw on the menu they have liver onions so I definitely want to try that. Every once in awhile I want a good meal. I will return Texaz Grill. I know, 5 stars for a joint in Bethany Home and the 51... are you crazy? The answer is no, the exact opposite. I'll start with the service, I sat at the bar today, lovely young lady who was very engaged and determined to make my first experience here a lasting memory... she succeeded. I ordered a drink and discussed menu options with her, I landed on the trio of fried meats, cfk, cfc, and cfp however I hate chicken so I asked to substitute for an additional piece of cfp. I wasn't in to the sides as I really don't like potatoes or vegetables (yes I am a fat person who loves meat) so she suggested a double order of salad, I declined thankfully as the salad she brought out was more than I could eat in a week. The salad was old school style, not that thick ass nasty dressing, appropriate consistency and very tasty, I actually ate more than I expected. Then she brought the fried meats, now typically I go gravy in the side but I got distracted and forgot to add this to my order, but the gravy was so good it didn't matter. They pounded the cfk and breaded it to order, I assume the same for the cfp. Outstanding in crunch, tenderness, quality and flavor. Absolutely delicious. I will be back again in the next few days for sure. Do yourself a favor, don't sleep on this throwback to what great restaurants used to strive to be.. this place is legit!! read more

I must start with a disclaimer. I gave them three stars because the type of food they serve does not fit my lifestyle or diet. And that is not necessarily a fair way to judge. It is a very unique restaurant. Very old-school Phoenix. Much like the old pinnacle Peak patio. There is lots of nostalgia pieces hanging from the walls. Most of the staff has worked there for about 10 years or more. They really do offer fantastic service. It is a great place to bring guests from out of town so they can experience Old Phoenix. Going back to the food. Lots of what they make is deep fried. Which if you love that kind of food this is your place. I understand the chicken fried steak is bigger than the plate. The pork chops I had I asked for them to be grilled and they were fine but bland. They did want me to put their gravy on it, Which I don't prefer, but I did ask for it on the side so I could taste it. To me it was not remarkable. Their salads are very much plain. They used mainly iceberg restaurant bag type mix. I had the balsamic dressing which they make and it was tasty but it was much too much of it for my taste. Been here many times throughout my life in AZ. Love the food, you never leave hungry that's for sure. Though as far as service, our waitress, who I believe was hired to serve others so they leave satisfied, sure left something to be desired. They when she arrived back at the table, huffed and said "have you decided?" The first experience for him was not enjoyable to say the least. A group of 5 of us arrived for dinner at 6:00. The rude hostess refused to sit us at one of the vacant larger tables and instead crowded us into a 4 top. Needless to say, this was not a good start to the meal. We were offered a choice of salad or cole slaw to start with. Unfortunately, 3 of us opted for the cole slaw, which while nice and creamy was loaded with onion and perhaps some garlic. None of us could finish the cole slaw because the onion was so strong. We tried the biscuits, which were undercooked and pastey. One bite was all that anyone could tolerate. Next we ordered main courses. Two people ordered the Saturday Special steak Lin Sue. A N.Y. strip steak topped with artichoke hearts, jumbo shrimp and then covered in bearnaise sauce. I don't know who thought this combination up, but neither of the people who ordered it finished it. One of the comments was that the shrimp were well overcooked. Companion ordered the "famous" chicken fried steak because there was no prime rib available. It came smothered in a very thick, heavy gravy that could only be compared to wallpaper paste. They may have served hundreds of thousands of chicken fried steaks, but if they were like this plate I feel sorry for all those who tried to eat it. I ordered the pork chops with gravy and mashed potatoes. I was lucky in that the pork chops were nicely cooked - however they were covered in the same "gravy glop" that everything else was hidden under. Most of our party asked for take home boxes with the idea of feeding the leftovers either to 2 legged or 4 legged members of their household. Next we ordered dessert. Once again, I picked the winner - peach cobbler topped with vanilla ice cream. Served warm, it was flavorful though the crust was not well cooked. The ice cream was nice. Another of our party ordered the bread pudding with whisky sauce. The bread pudding was very dense and did not look like any other bread pudding I have ever seen. As we passed it around the table, one of our party got a bite that had raw whisky in it and couldn't stop coughing. Another item which was passed around was the "Old New Orleans Calas" which were supposed to be sweet rice balls, deep fried and dusted with sugar. Whoever made them forgot to put the sugar on them and totally overcooked them to the point that the rice was crunchy and inedible. They were not deemed to be something that anyone would take home. On the positive side, our waitress was excellent and a total hoot. She was lots of fun and our tips reflected her good nature. The restaurant is decorated with all sorts of kitsch, which prevented us from ascertaining the cleanliness or lack thereof of the restaurant. But we went in maybe hour &half before closing but our server gave off an attitude that she was annoyed she RARELY ever checked on us but proceeds to check on the other tables that came in after us. We sat there with empty drinks through most of our dinner time even though we asked multiple times. And I had the smoked prime rib that taste like fire work smoke didn't taste right. "Incredible" "Magnificent" "The best chicken fried steak on this side of the world" -Me, after my first, second, and third bite at this heavenly restaurant. First, you walk in and there is not an inch of paint you can see on the walls -- they are completely covered with miscellaneous items such as license plates and deer heads. They were extremely attentive and quick to get our orders in. Obviously, I ordered the chicken fried steak, and obviously, you will also order the chicken fried steak. We were served coleslaw and a biscuit while we waited in anticipation for what was to come. I took small bites of both, trying to save room for my feast, but couldn't help but gobble down the biscuit which was a flakey and buttery. I'm not a fan of coleslaw, so I can't really comment on that, but it looked very creamy, if that's how coleslaw is supposed to look. The chicken fried steak. wow. First, you get not one, but TWO giant pieces of meat covered in gravy with a side of potatoes (I chose mashed). It was absolutely fantastic. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and the gravy was topped perfectly. The mashed potatoes were great, but I pushed them aside so I could shove my face in the steak. They packaged our chicken fried steak for us to go with an extra side of gravy at no charge (bless them), as there was no way we were going to finish it all. One of the wonderful people who worked there (who I believe was the manager) overheard it was my birthday and did not let me leave without giving me a scoop of ice cream and announcing to the restaurant it was my birthday. The good: The ambiance is crazy. I love the signage and just overt nuttiness of the decor. They are cool with wee ones and accommodated nicely. Huge drink portions for both alcoholic and ice teas. The average: The steaks and prime rib are on par with sizzler. No worse no better. If I need steak sauce it's never better than average. The rib eye I had was a thin cut, which is hard to cook medium so I had to return it because it was cooked well. No big deal they handled beautifully. The biscuit and wheat bun were standard fair and neither were warm. I do like it when a place drops free bread on your table regardless. The bad: The salad. Awful. Wilted lettuce is the worst. This is a tucked away gem in Phoenix. Once you walk into the small steakhouse you are inundated with the sweet smell of smoked beef. Our party of 4 adults and 3 kiddos was kindly accommodated and our waitress went above and beyond to help make sure we and our kiddos had a great experience. I had the smoked prime rib which was amazing and was tender enough to melt in my mouth. The smokey taste was certainly different from most preparations but was excellent. Everyone at the table had different potato options and they were all also excellent. I recommend the biscuits from the bread basket. The chicken fried steak, which is one of their staples, is humongous and really all the portions are "Texas sized" including the kids' meals. Kids' meals come with a cup of bluebell ice cream and the kiddos even got a trip to the toy chest which certainly made our kiddos' evening. Food and service were fantastic. Living in New York city for so many years I would chuckle over tourists. Just standing abruptly in utter fascination, usually in the middle of the sidewalk, blocking commutes in Times Square. In the office we would chalk it up to visual overload. So when I walked into TEXAZ Grill and behaved similarly I laughed at myself. Opening the doors to this restaurant was unbelievable. Memorabilia from the Great State of Texas. Covers. Every. Square. Inch. Neon lights greeted me. "Texas!" (Also neon shapes of Texas were everywhere.) An old school juke box. Beer signs galore. Guitars hanging. A giant gull head. Horns. John Wayne behind the bar. "Happy Birthday Texas!" The best collection of inappropriate stickers *ever*. License plates of every state covered the bar. The collection has been cultivated over 28 years by the the owner and patrons. (Tip: When you go, feel free to bring stuff in!) Anyhoo, stuff. My eyeballs were full. Finally I made it to the bar and met Tammy. (A hoot who has worked here 18 years!) After inquiring where I was from, a peppy response, "Well, welcome to Texas!" (And so I fell in love with this place. Before food even factored into the equation.) ENTREES So the food... A tad concerned there wouldn't be a healthy option to consume I was incredibly wrong. (Plenty of non-fried options!) The ribeye steak was to die for. (Perhaps the mashed potatoes with gravy were necessary to consume. But I just had to try them!) The meat was prepared to the exact pinkness level requested. I can't even describe the level of food happiness that transpired that night. The meat was just so tender. I had made the mistake of noshing on the spicy hot peanuts available on the bar, as well as eating my way thru the delightfully prepared coleslaw that accompanied the meal. Amateur hour. Yes, definitely eat the coleslaw. It was flavorful and not too heavy in mayo. (Or try the salad with the blue cheese. Wonderful chunks of cheese.) But leave space for your meal! As I wasn't dining solo I had the opportunity to sample a burger. Holy bejeebers. This isn't a frou frou burger. This is a simply prepared burger, sans grease, on a beautiful bun with high quality meat. DESSERT We earned a bread pudding! One second and I'll explain how. Tough decision as to what to pick but we went with the french bread in an egg custard with toasted pecans & raisins. Why? It was topped with a bourbon sauce! Dense and delicious. Served as described. Warm. Mmm mmm mmm! Biggest scoop of ice cream too! CLEAN PLATE CLUB Clean you plate at lunch and get one punch. Two punches for dinner. EIGHT punches equals ONE dessert! My wife ordered her all time most popular dish"chicken frid steak: and I got the chop steak. I uploaded a photo of my wifes dish with her hand over the food just to show you the portion we got.
