Went here last night for a couples night out with the wife and 2 other couples. We eat out often. Saw the reviews and was excited to give this place a try. The outside looks very deceiving, like a hole in the wall. To our surprise the inside was cute and cozy. Unfortunately, the charm wore off quickly. The ladies ordered from the drink menu and received awful watered down versions of a margarita and raspberry lime aids. My beer and the beer of my friend was warm. My other friend ordered a whiskey sour that was made poorly. I brought all of this to the attention of the waitress and she appeared surprised but made the 3 newly ordered drinks herself and explained their fridge was not working properly. Trying to give the benefit of the doubt we mushed on and ordered apps. Speed was not their strong suit but to their credit the muscles, Thai calamari and tuna were tasty. Anxiously awaiting entree ordering we were told 2 entrees were already not available at 7pm. The filet mignon and ribs were done because it was the first day of a new menu and they cook fresh as we were told. Entrees took a very long time. When they finally arrived 1 of 3 orders of the scallops and risotto was missing scallops and the order of pasta and lobster had no lobster. When the waitress was told, she again acted surprised, went to the kitchen and return with an explanation that they were out of scallops and replaced the lobster dish with the correct dish. Then she told us the kitchen had 2 people only and they were almost ready to pass out. At this point we were frustrated and annoyed and made clear we expected compensation. The dishes that arrived were tasty. Crab cakes, sea bass and the corrected orders even though overshadowed by a bad bartender, slow service, mistake orders and bad overall service. Once dinner was completed a staff member surprised our table with 1 of each dessert choice on the house in addition to a round of shots. The bill was appropriately compensated. The over all experience was odd and none of us will return or recommend based on this experience but we did appreciate the recognition of the bad experience and the attempt to make it better. read more

So bad we didn't it even make it to the restaurant. Party of 6 for my wife's 50th. Tried to set up birthday cake and woman hung up on me. Friend of mine called about GF options and spoke with the same woman and got "your daughter will be fine if she doesn't eat anything with sauce." I called back to cancel the reservation and told her the date and my first and last name. She couldn't find it. I read her the reservation number and she said "oh..I couldn't find it because you booked it under Mike, not Michael." No joke. Their food must be amazing to endure treatment like that. read more

Amazing! We ended up here on a whim, no reservation on a Saturday night and the hostess did all she could to get us seated as quickly as possible. She even came over to celebrate with us when we scored a table only 10 minutes later. It's cozy and lively, perfect date dinner spot. I got the filet mignon and my boyfriend got one of the specials, lobster fettuccini. I was blown away and the house made truffle Parmesan steak fries.. out of this world. Portion sizes were perfect and employees were polite and warm. I've been in patchogue for two years now and kicking myself for waiting so long to try it. We'll be back next week with friends! No pictures because I have no self control and basically swallowed the entire meal in one bite. read more

Incredible dining experience! The ambience of the resturant was so romantic and perfect and the food was litterally incredible. If you haven't been yet then you are denying your self an unforgettable delicious dinning experience. We have talk for months about wanting to go here and let me tell you it was phenomenal! We got a reservation for 8pm Saturday January 5th 2019. Everything from start to finish was delicious and perfect! They had our table ready when we walked in, the wait staff was so sweet, courteous, and helpful. We had the Valcano shrimp appetizer. I ate the filet mignon entree and the key lime pie for desert was delicious. I can't say enough good things about this restuarant. It truly was the best night out. read more

In the mood for seafood after the disappointing Oyster Bay Festival, we were in the mood for seafood. We Googled "best seafood restaurants" (near us) and South Ocean Grill was 1 of the top 3 so we decided to drop by after calling ahead. We were told that it was walk-in at the moment but things could change in the 20 minutes it would take us to get there, and the hostess was right! When we arrived we were told the wait was 45 minutes to one hour, so I recommend making reservations. This was one of the best experiences we've ever had. The place is very small, so reservations are suggested. It's cozy and romantic, but still friendly for groups of friends. The service was casual and friendly, the drinks and food were fantastic. The bartender (whose name I forget...sorry) was creating Halloween-based drinks that night, one of which (The Dracula) I tried. It was fun, artistic and strong. My wife and I shared a shrimp appetizer and our entrees were the scallop dish and lobster/shrimp gnocchi. Both delicious and decent portions. For dessert, we went with the homemade banana bread, made by the bartender's cousin, which was delicious! The best compliment my wife could had made was that she wants to make this place our new romantic restaurant. My girlfriend and I used to meet at Houston's near the Roosevelt Field mall once a week until they closed years ago. Someone told me this place was comparable- I wish I didn't wait so long to check it out. What a gem! Love the small, quaint dining room. The food was divine. The slaw w the ribs and sweet potato fries was incredible- the old fashioned burger was out of this world. The white bean dip was delish - and the cookie skillet dessert was perfection. Strolled in on a Sunday afternoon with a friend and sat outside at one of the little tables in front to enjoy the great weather. The waitress was amazing. She was very accommodating and had a like able personality. She recommended the kale salad which was amazing it came with some roasted peanut dressing that just hit the spot. We went early on a Friday evening (4:50/5pm) knowing that we didn't have a reservation. Said they opened at 4 so should still be good to go. Got seated outside quickly and it filled up fast. The staff did not seem like they had their stuff together yet and throughout the whole meal we didn't have great service. They were out of the beer my boyfriend ordered and then our server told us there weren't any specials but overheard the other waitress tell the other table specials. We asked him again and he said there was a meat ravioli and cod. We asked the other waitress and she gave a more detailed description and catfish. The whole time they didn't seem to know what was going on. We went with dinner menu dishes. My dad ordered the swordfish only to be told they were out of it, quite early to be out but no problem chose again. The third waitress had no idea which table to deliver food too and just asked every table. Now why I gave them four stars: The food was fantastic! It seems the chef is holding this place together. We got the steak and Gorgonzola flatbread, perfect! I had the ribeye and baked potato, amazing marinade and one of the best cooked potatoes I've ever had - nice crispy skin and fluffy inside. The scallops my dad changed his order to were very good and loved the corn and risotto combo. My boyfriend had the filet and it was cooked perfectly, really enjoyed the Parmesan fries as well. Overall it's an average place. Location isn't the best especially for outdoor dining and there seemed to be a weird smell upon entry to the restaurant (we didn't smell it sitting outside). The street is a bit busy but it was a Friday so fun people watching! The inside atmosphere was really nicely put together but not much comment since we were outside. I do expect better service with the prices but the food saved the day. Fantastic and will come back and give the service another shot. read more

Reservations for our original dinner plans had to be canceled because of timing and logistics.... Stuff happens .... So, we ended up going out a few hours later. After some consideration, we ended up at South Ocean Grill in Patchogue. Wow!! Where has this place been hiding ??? Well, apparently right across the street from Lombard's on the Bay.... We were seated promptly... it's a very small place. I think I counted 31 seats, which included 5 or 6 at the bar. If you've never been, it's like you just walked into someone's house, and the living room furniture has been replaced with 2-tops and 4-tops.... Super quaint and cozy for sure. We ordered drinks and then decided to have the Sesame Crusted Tuna appetizer... pan seared to perfection... so tasty... and the chipotle aioli gave it a nice flavor... a bit of mixed greens and oh, watch out for the wasabi that was hiding on the side, and somehow became attached to my chopstick... now, I love wasabi with my sushi.... But an UNEXPECTED chunk.... Yikes... We ordered the Pan Seared Jumbo Scallops and Rock Shrimp with the creamy corn and spinach risotto... super tasty and the scallops were cooked perfectly. I ordered the Cajun Grilled Swordfish.... Now... from my experience, cooking swordfish needs to be timed just right or a dense fish like that will be dry... Well, chef Hirbin Manzanares has the swordfish timing down pat. Super moist and delicious!! Could not have been happier with my dinner choice! We never order dessert, but somehow we were draw to the Key Lime Pie... a most unusual choice for the 2 of us. The Key Lime Pie had just the perfect combination of tartness, sweetness and creaminess. Great crust too... well worth going for, I'm glad we did. Overall, an amazingly delicious dinner. We had originally planned on going elsewhere... and as mentioned, stuff happens .... Delicious. Unassuming. Creative. Cozy. These are the words that come to mind when thinking about this Long Island favorite of mine. My husband and I have become semi-regulars...it's our "the kid is with her grandparents, let's go out and have a nice meal, place"... and we've yet to be disappointed. I never rank this low on yelp but I was truly disappointed in the dinner I had, especially after seeing so many rave reviews on yelp. Made reservations, was seated right away which was a good thing. The place is small, 8-10 tables inside max. Once we sat we waited easily over ten minutes to be greeted and take a drink order. Then another ten minutes for the drinks. And so on and so on. Everything dragged on. An hour meal took 2.5 hours without dessert. I had to call my waiter over for more bar drinks. And the food was really not that great. The mussels smelled really bad, like feces. We couldn't even eat them. The volcano shrimp was good. Entrees were ok but nothing really to rave about. Their steak fries are a potato cut into four pieces and fried with truffle salt. The Mexican corn everyone raves about was drowning in some sort of mayo sauce. They had such a heavy hand with it that's all I tasted. I wished we could have tried to dessert but by that time I was there so damn long I just wanted to leave. It was dark in there too which made it ever more depressing. I will not go back there to change my mind. No photos because after waiting so long to get a drink in my hand and order appetizers I was already over this place. read more

Food arrived cold; we have the photos to show, upon request. Artichokes must have been set afire, and the crab cakes dumped into a "leftover" box, along with leaking cole slaw. Upon calling the restaurant, we were put in touch with Jackie, an "owner/manager." We were promised a refund, a gift certificate and that the situation would be addressed with Grub Hub. I do NOT recommend. Food was average at best. The place is so loud you can hardly talk to the people you are sitting with without screaming and the server can barely hear you. Was told they are known for their fish, but yet their Filet Mignon was sold out, idk that seems fishy to me. The scallops were not good and the herb crust that was supposed to be on the salmon was more like an herb mush smeared on like butter. Lastly, the margarita and Prosecco and vodka drink (I can't remember the specific name of the drink) were not good in the slightest. This place is definitely not worth the high prices. read more

After attending a wake we were looking for a quiet place to relax and have a good meal. We hit the jackpot with South Ocean Grill. We were literally the only ones in there when we arrived. I was a bit skeptical at first, but it was early on a Tuesday night so not to be deterred we grabbed a cozy table by the window. There was plenty of staff on hand but they didn't hover, they were attentive but not overbearing. We ordered the white bean dip as an app, which came with homemade tortilla chips. My husband was a huge fan of this dish, i would order it again for the chips alone...wish they had a salsa or hummus to go with the delicious chips. For our meals hubby had scallops with risotto. i ordered the flounder with rock shrimp and risotto. Gordon Ramsey would have been proud of the risotto, it was very good. The fish was cooked well, the scallops could have had a better sear on them but were very tasty. As we were getting ready to leave a few customers arrived, which I was happy to see as this place deserves to have a loyal following. All in all we were very happy with our meal and will definitely be back if in the area. read more

What a little gem! Located on South Ocean Ave. in Patchogue, this is a perfect, cozy spot to grab a bite after a walk to the water or a bike ride around town. We came here on a Sunday afternoon and was lucky enough to get a spot to sit outside. The women dining next to us honestly could not stop saying good things about the food, so that got us pretty excited. I ordered the grilled fish sandwich which came out and I wasn't sure how I was going to be able to eat the whole thing! It came on a freshly baked sesame seed bun (they bake their own bread!) with lettuce, tomato, and some aoili. I was able to sub out fries for a kale salad which was worth it!! It was so delicous. It was dressed with a mild vinagarette, dried canberries and some sunflower seeds. Must try! My friend ordered a mushroom, spinach, and goat cheese flatbread which was super tasty! There was enough for a whole meal. My boyfriend ordered the crispy chicken sandwhich, that came on their sesame bun as well. Fresh baked bread was brought out to the table to start, and they have a decent selection of beer and wine which they say keeps growing. The inside, although I only took a peak, looked gorgeous and much more roomy than I would have thought. I'm looking forward to coming here again. It just could be my new little spot! read more

After the awesome sky diving experience, we decided to treat ourselves with a good but light meal. Is sky diving a life changing experience? It is because I only wanted veggies now! (Joking, wanted to give my stomach some more rest.) I got the grilled veggie platter (corn, half artichoke, quinoa with tomato, and kale salad), which was very fresh and delicious. The grilled half artichoke has a nice crust, and juicy and soft meat. Corn is sweet and delicious too with just the right amount of burn. Other items are flavorful too. I can imagine their grilled seafood will be delicious too!! Overall, a very nice and cosy place with outdoor seating. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive, kept checking on us see how we were doing during the meal. The cool thing is that chef checked my photo real time! Came back last night to celebrate a birthday and try some entrees. Previously we've taken out and have only tried sandwiches. What a shame we waited so long to try more! The Bronzino was perfect, served up with their amazing kale salad. That salad is enjoyed by kale haters. It's seriously delicious. The Mexican street corn was so good I was tempted to order a 2nd round, but held back so I could try their desserts. And the artichokes were top notch as usual. Really-really good food......Nothing bad at all. Two of us had the fish sandwich which was fresh and as advertised topped with a spicy slaw on a home made bun! ...the burger with avocado slices was a winner and I had the fries were crispy and fine but my friends had the the kale salad was unique and delicious!...It had peanut dressing so my friend couldn't eat it (she didn't read menu well) and I got it for lunch! Some very important customers were very happy after I brought lunch from South Ocean Grill today. We were super impressed that lunch for eight was ready so quickly, including appetizers & desserts, but even more impressive was that everyone loved their lunch. My dish was the vegetarian burger and it was excellent. It's the veggie burger to try if you don't eat meat or even if you do, but want to try something different. Veggie burgers can be dry, but this one is moist and tasty. I shared some with a carnivore and got a thumbs up! Believe it or not, I had two kale salads today and the one from South Ocean was far superior. It has a peanut dressing, corn, and cranberries, which together make a great salad. Even our kale salad newbie liked it! We shared the steak flat bread, calamari, and the Mexico City corn on the cob and they were all well received. For entrees, the scallops and crab cakes were both hits, along with the crispy chicken and the Caesar salad. We were all full, but I'm glad that we made room for dessert. The warm chocolate brownie was definitely the crowd favorite, especially with the ice cream that was packed separately for us. The key lime pie was perfect - not too tart and not too sweet, just right! We also enjoyed the creme brulée cheesecake, more of a cheesecake than a creme brulée, but also delicious. Hats off to the folks at South Ocean Grill. Meghan was so nice and helpful on the phone and in person. And Chef Hirbin created our outstanding dishes. So, my lunch crowd wholeheartedly recommends South Ocean Grill for great food from wonderful people! read more

With so many restaurants to pick from on Main Street in Patchogue, it would question why when in the area should you stray from here. The answer to this question is South Ocean Grill. My wife and I were dazzled by this cozy, off the beaten path restaurant. From the second we walked in the door we were greeted politely and gracefully. We were seated on time at a table that had amazingly comfortable chairs and made me us feel like a celebrity. The decor pulls off class while maintaining a casual and comfortable feel. Now to the important part, THE FOOD! We started by ordering a pitcher of red sangria. It was amazingly fruity and packed a punch. When looking to take the edge off with a delicious drink, you can't get better than this sangria. Appetizers came and we enjoyed the Mexican street corn and steak and Gorgonzola flat bread. I am a guy that will usually just pass over corn on the cob but my wife loves it so we ordered it. I couldn't be more happy that we did. Covered in a smokey chipotle aioli, reggiano and roasted to perfection combined with the natural sweetness of crispy corn made for a surprisingly delectable dish that I could have just kept eating and eating. The flat bread provided another amazing starter. The tender juicy meat was complimented perfectly by the beautiful tang of Gorgonzola and roasted peppers. Earthy undertones were provided by fresh arugula and balsamic glaze tied together everything atop a crispy flatbread for a symphony of flavor that just cannot be beat. Is your mouth salivating yet? For dinner I just couldn't resist the special of beef Wellington while my wife chose the scallops and rock shrimp risotto. Cooked to a perfect medium rare, the steak melted in your mouth and was seasoned perfectly. The herbs really came through. All wrapped in a crusty puff pastry and drizzled with a delicious red wine reduction. It was just incredible. The scallops were seared perfectly, tender and glistening on the inside combined with crispy tastes rock shrimp over an amazing risotto. This was finished with a white wine lemon butter sauce. Amazing dish. Because everything was so good we decided to see if the restaurant could deliver a trifecta. My wife ordered a key lime pie which was tart, creamy on a sweet crispy crust. I ordered the 5 nut brownie which was rich and still warm covered in nuts and vanilla ice cream. It was a perfect brownie. Both clearly made fresh on premises. A perfect finish to a perfect meal. A hidden little gem with solid food. Nothing fancy in terms of decoration, but the food rocks and that's all that should count. No hard liquor served, just beer, wine and sangria. Apparently in a location that has failed all previous establishments, but I have a feeling this one is here to stay. The chopped kale salad was on point and the skirt steak with mashed and brussel sprouts were excellent. Servers are polite and caring, the place is clean and the desserts are homemade. Small intimate restaurant. Suggestions: 1): BREAD. For the love of Mike, why no bread? Your answer was "covid". WTF. If you think it's too much to give away, just charge for it. While I am having a drink while deciding what to eat, I like to munch on bread and olive oil. What does covid have to do with it? We all use same salt and pepper shakers/grinders. Lame excuse. 2): lower the damn lights, just a tad. A little ambiance please. Hint, makes people happy, happy people drink more, that is where you make your money.
