One word to describe South Ocean Grill.....FANTASTIC! This place has been on my bookmark list for a while because their food looked amazing in photos. I will say I was not disappointed at all with what they had to offer. The food here is fresh and cooked to perfection. I ordered the louisiana chicken sandwich while my bf had a fish burger. Each of our sandwiches came with kale salad. Let me say I dislike kale with a passion because to me it's bland. However, the kale salad SOG served was incredible. It was so flavorful and rich! My chicken sandwich was also amazing. The sauce, bread, cheese and chicken were so delicious! We topped things off with a delicious cheesecake. Service here is good, we were the only people in the restaurant on a slow Sunday but the hostess and waitress were super friendly and welcoming. So the day of my long awaited military retirement ceremony arrived and after we had made reservations and were going to be seated in the patio. It was raining so they accommodated us inside (15 ). I had never been here but had some great reviews and it was military family owned. Upon arriving we were seated immediately by the host (very friendly) and took our drink order. In the meantime i went and ask to meet the chef , sorry forgot his name , very polite and assured me dinner would be great. So not many details but out of 15 plates, did not hear one complaint and the drinks were on the money. Great Customer service and dining experience. I was craving some seafood and was searched for a new place to try. Based on reviews, South Ocean Grill was highly recommended. This restaurant is small so make sure you make reservations especially on a Saturday night. We were able to get a reservations at 8pm on a Saturday and it was still pretty busy. We tried two appetizers, one being the daily special which was cheese and tomatoes with balsamic over bread. It was delicious. The other we had was the volcano shrimp, which had the perfect amount of spice. After debating a while what to get for dinner, I decided on the Lobster and Shrimp Gnocchi. My husband ordered the Pan Seared Jumbo Scallops and Rock Shrimp. Both dishes were great and satisfied our seafood cravings. Also, if you're getting cocktails, I recommend the Shorefront punch. Delish! For dessert, we shared a Skillet Cookie Sundae. Great end to our meal. read more

Family owned friendly environment and very accommodating! Was a great find and plan to return!

This place was amazing! I'm so glad we discovered it last night, we had such a fantastic dinner at the South Ocean Grill! When we got there, originally we thought they wouldn't be able to seat us, but the hostess really worked her reservation planner and found a perfect cozy table for my husband and me. We started off with a couple of beers and browsed the intriguing menu. We began our culinary journey with the prosciutto flat bread. They weren't kidding when they said they we're known for their flat breads. It was absolutely delicious. For dinner I had the shrimp and chips and hubby had the crab cakes... and of course we shared a bit of each other's meal. The shrimp was the perfect crispiness, so fresh, the breading just right, and beyond flavorful and good. There was some type of spicy dipping sauce on the side, and though I'm not much for spicy I thought it was fabulous! The crab cakes had the most amazing consistency and were very filling and delectable. Even the coleslaw was fantastic! We don't usually do dessert but everything was so terrific we just had to have more. We went for the creme brûlée cheese cake and I swear it's about the best cheesecake I've had. It was light but not too airy. It was a treat but not overly sweet. Unlike a lot of cheesecakes it didn't at all seem to be too much after a good meal... to the contrary it was the perfect finish. I cannot say enough good thinks about this place. The atmosphere was comfortable and trendy, the type of place you want to be on date night. The service was outstanding... everyone was so helpful and friendly. And the food was more like six stars than five... it was THAT good. Superb. Outstanding. Magnificent. It's been a few years (pre-Covid) since we last visited South Ocean Grill. Unfortunately our experience was very negative primarily due to the unfriendly and inattentive waiter who served us. Management needs to address this issue with this particular waiter. We were friendly towards him and he did not reciprocate and made us feel very uncomfortable. Given this experience we will not be returning to your establishment and look forward to visiting other establishments in the Patchogue area. read more

I never leave reviews hours after I eat but South Ocean Grill is worth it. Really, absolutely amazing! I've had this place bookmarked for well over 2-years. I never like taking the kids to new places unless we scope them out first. I felt like it was a big place, but wasn't sure, turns out it's not, fifteen tables tops? Anyhow, it was date night, thankfully I called last-minute today to make a reservation, and it was a good thing I did. They had an opening at 4:30. I like eating dinner early so that worked for me! First, the appetizers. We had the Volcano Shrimp and Mexico City Corn on the Cobb. I am not going to lie, when the Mexico City Corn on the Cobb was put on the table, the smell of the cheese turned me off, I wasn't going to eat it. My God, it was amazing. Like no joke, AMAZING. The Volcano Shrimp were also fantastic. The shrimp are fried perfectly. There's also some magic going on here because the fried crispy shrimp are sitting in a wet sauce but don't get soggy? Crazy! For my entree I had the Pan Seared Jumbo Scallops and Rock Shrimp. I've had scallops many times in the past but this is what scallops should taste like. All these years, whomever was cooking the scallops I was eating must have been destroying them because they did not taste like this! They actually MELTED in my mouth. The risotto was delicious. I almost cleared my plate but would have blown up if I kept going. Next was dessert. I asked the waitress if I should get the Creme Brûlée Cheesecake or the Tres Leches Cake, and she said no doubt the Tres Leches Cake. I have NEVER eaten anything so delicious in my life. I can't even describe it, it's just something you have to experience. That's right, it's an actual experience to eat this cake. I walked out of this place a fat mess. My wife and I always play The Price is Right Showcase Showdown when it comes to guessing the bill. I guessed $240, she was at $140. It was $180. She won? Two entrees, two appetizers, five total cocktails, two coffees, and two sodas. Not to mention real-deal high-end eats. That's a score as far as I'm concerned. One of the best restaurants of all time! Always an amazing, fresh and well executed menu. A very small seating area so I suggest reservations. Bartender makes the BEST margaritas!! We have visited many times, but this time we enjoyed the prosciutto and burrata salad, the cheese dip and crab cakes. They were ALL delicious! The crab cakes were meaty and the remoulade was perfection. We opted for the crime brûlée cheesecake - the top was crunchy and delicate and the cake was spectacular. I was able to get 15% off the bill- nice discount! Located on South Ocean, in the summer I have a feeling this location is pretty much a nightmare. The parking lot was ridiculous and aggravated me more than anything. There's an extremely tiny- man made- lot filled with dirt-huge mud puddles & lots of rocks. Also the holes and divots made me nervous to park my vehicle there. The lot is behind another lot, if your handicapped, get dropped off in front. There were only a few spots on the street to park. The Prices were on the high side. I didn't mind because I had the discount. I don't think I would come here unless I had a discount or they're running some kind of special. Loved the "small restaurant" feel. The decor and overall atmosphere was relaxed and felt homey. The Service was friendly. Our Server told us the specials & gave us her recommendations. I booked on Opentable and was seated immediately. The food came out in a timely fashion and I never felt rushed during my meal. The food was flavorful. I tried a variety of dishes- I'll be reviewing what I had: -Complimentary Freshhhhh Delicious Bread served with Herb & Lemon Butter. Would have liked to have been offered seconds but sadly that didn't happen. -White Bean Spinach Dip: Thought this was an overall tasty appetizer. Great for sharing between 1-3 people. The meat was very tough. The portion was extremely large but for the price tag and the tough steak, I would skip this dish. 2.5 out of 5 stars -Key Lime Pie: $11 for a rather large slice. If I knew they were charging that much I would have skipped this one. I thought the pie was very good but certainly wasn't the best and not worth the money. I've had better. 3.5 out of 5 stars Overall I'm extremely happy I tried South Ocean Grill. I had such a great time at this well decorated, quaint little restaurant. I don't know if it's an off night or what but it's Friday and a bunch of empty seats. My snapper was bland and my wife's sea bass had more bone than fish. She was grossed out by digging out every bite. Got drinks at first and she never came back. Wish we weren't near the bar because watching her talk to the bartender instead of waiting tables kind of made it worse. I can tell this chef and the team put great effort into making beautiful and great tasting food. I like the different combinations of foods they have. The Mexican street corn is to drool over. The kale salad is just so good and I don't even like kale haha! The drinks are always delicious. I had a creme Brûlée cheesecake that was the of the most creative desserts I've ever had.The white bean and cheese dip so good. Literally everything we try here is delicious. I've heard GREAT things, so I figured for date night with the wife we'd give it a shot, made a ressy in person early in the day as walk ins and were greeted by a very dismissive hostess during lunch service. When we returned we were sat at an unbussed, dirty two top with a space heater jammed under the seat by the wall I took a gander at the comically large laminated diner style menu, my wife commented on the fresh lipstick stain on her water glass. We ordered wine and read over the menu and I found it to be EXTREMELY overpriced for what was offered. As a cook in the industry I was appalled by the prices that exceeded the prices of long islands highest rated steakhouses such as Prime and Tellers 38 dollars for crab cakes versus primes 32 And a whopping 23 dollar Caesar salad versus Primes 19... The ambiance is casual yet intimate, and would be great for either date night or family dinner. My husband and I are incredibly picky about our food and service (given that we grew up in the industry; my husband was an executive chef for years, etc.)... But we were not disappointed!! Coleslaw is back! This place was delicious, and the coleslaw was definitely a major factor. The restaurant is small and cozy and has a small outside space that faces the street so you can see the neighborhood. It has a maritime decor and feels like you are near the ocean (which you are) The waitstaff is very friendly and sweet. We came here for lunch when it wasn't too busy, so we received lots of attention. The food was great! The fish sandwich was perfectly cooked and tasted amazing with the coleslaw on top. The fish sandwich was made with salmon and the fish was very nicely made; pink inside and seasoned outside; great flavors. The Cajun chicken sandwich was also delicious. The chicken was soft and moist and the coleslaw on top gave it that signature flavor. Overall we were very pleased with our food. It was a great warm day to sit outside in their small seating area; we saw neighborhood kids playing and the ocean wasnt far away. The only negative was that the outdoor seating is by a relatively busy street, so you hear the cars going by. We would definitely come back here to try the rest of the menu! read more

Ordered take out and when I opened the containers at home I saw some of the most inedible, dangerous looking food I've ever seen.. The worst was the "Sesame Crusted Tuna" that was supposed to be high-quality sashimi grade Tuna. What I received instead was SLIMY, GREY & BLACK! I called the restaurant and the chef said they were out of the Ahi Tuna they usually use....so wth did I get?? I can safely say I would have gotten very sick if I had eaten it (see pic). The rest of the food was horrible as well. Grilled artichokes were undercooked and pretty much inedible. The baked potato was hard as a rock, chicken was dry and just very very boring with store-bought bbq on top. The noodle steak salad was nothing more than cold spaghetti on top of arugula with a few small pieces of overcooked steak. No peanut vinaigrette, no cashews, etc etc...VERY far from what you would think a nice Asian steak salad would be. All in all, horrible food and the staff on the phone couldn't care less. read more

Went here last night for a couples night out with the wife and 2 other couples. We eat out often. Saw the reviews and was excited to give this place a try. The outside looks very deceiving, like a hole in the wall. To our surprise the inside was cute and cozy. Unfortunately, the charm wore off quickly. The ladies ordered from the drink menu and received awful watered down versions of a margarita and raspberry lime aids. My beer and the beer of my friend was warm. My other friend ordered a whiskey sour that was made poorly. I brought all of this to the attention of the waitress and she appeared surprised but made the 3 newly ordered drinks herself and explained their fridge was not working properly. Trying to give the benefit of the doubt we mushed on and ordered apps. Speed was not their strong suit but to their credit the muscles, Thai calamari and tuna were tasty. Anxiously awaiting entree ordering we were told 2 entrees were already not available at 7pm. The filet mignon and ribs were done because it was the first day of a new menu and they cook fresh as we were told. Entrees took a very long time. When they finally arrived 1 of 3 orders of the scallops and risotto was missing scallops and the order of pasta and lobster had no lobster. When the waitress was told, she again acted surprised, went to the kitchen and return with an explanation that they were out of scallops and replaced the lobster dish with the correct dish. Then she told us the kitchen had 2 people only and they were almost ready to pass out. At this point we were frustrated and annoyed and made clear we expected compensation. The dishes that arrived were tasty. Crab cakes, sea bass and the corrected orders even though overshadowed by a bad bartender, slow service, mistake orders and bad overall service. Once dinner was completed a staff member surprised our table with 1 of each dessert choice on the house in addition to a round of shots. The bill was appropriately compensated. The over all experience was odd and none of us will return or recommend based on this experience but we did appreciate the recognition of the bad experience and the attempt to make it better. read more

This is a great little place! Cozy, intimate, great ambience, and delicious food. We were met at the door by the owner, who was gracious and friendly, and as soon as we were seated, our waitress Alejandra came over and got our drinks. I ordered (forgot the name) a delicious cocktail that tasted like pumpkin spice and apple cider - it was served in a beautiful hammered copper round-bellied cup with a straw and a slice of apple floating on top. Delicious! Hubby ordered the white bean spinach dip for an appetizer - it came with crispy triangular hand-cut corn tortilla chips. He was nice enough to let me have some, and it was great! I ordered the crispy calamari, and it was crispy - best part was that they added a nice dollop of horseradish to the dipping sauce, so it had a zesty zing that made my tongue do a lambada of joy! For mains, hubster got the grilled vegetarian platter - see the photos for full frontal YAY! I begged a bite of the grilled corn, because I saw so many rave reviews on Yelp about it, I had to give it a go - Dios Mio - fabuloso!! I ordered the scallops and shrimp, and those tasty and succulent morsels arrived atop a mound of soft, well-seasoned risotto that made my eyes roll back in my head... it was almost a "When Harry Met Sally" moment! We shared a cheesecake with raspberry sauce for dessert, and it was lovely. Honestly, there were so many wonderful sounding things on the menu, I can't wait to go back and try some more of them! P.S. For anyone wondering why I didn't give it 5 stars instead of 4? I think the prices are a bit high. If there was a "Happy Hour" price for cocktails, say... or an "early bird special" (I am getting old! Need the early bird special!) that would have kicked it up to 5 stars. If there were 6 scallops instead of 3, and if the calamari was house-breaded, that would have been a definite five stars. However, when a place is just starting out, it needs GOALS. Cozy place that you best try to go to in the off season. They are located near the water and very popular in the summer. The waitress was very nice and attentive.
