Out of town and in search of a neighborhood gem, my colleague and I decided to check this place out. Absolutely adorable little house and the inside seating area was comfortable and made you feel like you're at home. We ordered an appetizer, meal and dessert and the food from start to finish was delicious. The key lime pie IS all it's hyped up to be! It was a Sunday evening and there were 2 tables seated when we arrived, that's it. The gentleman who served us was not very engaged, and seemed polite but not into his job or serving us as it took awhile for him to come over and even say hello (wait he didn't say hello or welcome). They offer cocktails, wine and a few drafts as well. Appetizers were very good. Shrimp, calamari, artichoke all to share. I had the steak sandwich. Very tasty but I'd go with something a bit more filling. It wasn't huge. The fries were listed as truffle but they were as plain as they get. No seasoning or salt to speak of...the first time I have put salt on anything in years. Still piping hot shoestring type. My Mom had the fried shrimp and they were quite good. Heavily breaded with many dip options. My wife enjoyed her ravioli special. Pricing is high but the quality and menu will have me back again. So much more to sample. read more

Always enjoyed the food and reasonable prices. We went back yesterday for lunch. Ordered: 2 Kale Salads @ $16 each, 2 cups of Chicken Noodle soup $22!!. 1 diet coke, 2 cups of tea and a piece of pie. Total about $90. The waiter asked if we wanted a bowl or Cup of soup and we specified that we only wanted a cup. Tucked away on a residential street, the South Ocean Grill is one of Patchogue's hidden gems. Every time I've been here, the food has been phenomenal. I love the grilled salmon and salmon sandwich. Although I haven't ventured outside of my love for salmon here yet, family and friends who have dined with me always enjoyed their food, whether it was steak, chicken, or salad. The only downsides are the lack of parking and the size of the restaurant. I enjoy the homey feel, but it has limited seating. Overall, the South Ocean Grill is a must-visit if you're in the Patchogue area. read more

My husband and I ate a the Grill on South Ocean tonight. it was the first time since the restaurant was sold. We had always enjoyed this small restaurant with friendly staff and really good food. Our experience was really bad. Our appetizer and dinners were not just overcooked but charred. Our waitress was nice enough but disappeared once our food was served. She never came over to ask how our dinner was or if we needed anything. The testa want too busy but the new owner didn't greet, smile or go over to chat with anyone there. I realize this is a tough time for restaurants with food costs, however it doesn't cost anything to smile or stop at a table for a quick chat. I hope the new owner gets it together and finds success. Nothing quite like restaurant week to open my eyes to new places! I stumbled across South Ocean Grill while looking at restaurants participating in restaurant week. My boyfriend and I immediately fell in love with their price fixed menu and decided this was where we were having date night! This place is small, like really small. HOWEVER, it is super cozy and inviting. If you don't like tight spaces I don't recommend dining in. I immediately fell in love with the decor and the ambiance. It's very rustic and like I said above super homey. For the food I ordered the Korean cauliflower, it was cooked to perfection but there were a few pieces drowning in sauce, could've used a little less. Otherwise amazing. My boyfriend started with the crab cake which was a $4 add on, he wasn't too thrilled but he did say it was amazing (crab cakes aren't my thing personally). For our main we both got the grilled salmon. We were slightly disappointed that they had run out of the filet mignon but the salmon proved to be an amazing choice. It was perfectly cooked and came with a delicious sauce on the side so you could add as much as you wanted. The green beans were cooked perfectly as well as the potatoes. We were both really impressed considering we thought we were gonna get a steak. Dessert was also great I had the gluten free chocolate cake, since I'm watching my figure, obviously. And it was heavenly. Creamy with a raspberry jam drizzled on top of it. I'm not gonna stop thinking about it. My boyfriend had the crème brûlée cheese cake which was also great, it wasn't saturated and held a great shape. Our drinks were alright, we both got "snowy" cocktails and they came in very "summery" glasses. My boyfriends margarita had coconut in it and it just seemed like a cocktail for the wrong time of year. I had an aperol spritz which was delightful but but also a little sweet with the "snowy" aspect to it. Overall, we had a great time and we definitely agreed on coming back in the summertime since it's right by the water and the summer cocktails look INSANE. For the winter season I'd just be prepared to be really close to other patrons since it's really small and there isn't a heated outdoor section. read more

Everything tasted fresh and was well made. PROS: great little place! The waitstaff was so friendly and all wear shirts that say the restaurant is Veteran Owned. That's awesome! The seafood is great. Mussel appetizer was good. The toasted bread with it was so good, I didn't expect to love the bread so much. Volcano shrimp were good, but the coleslaw was the star. I could have ate a bowl of just the slaw. So fresh and not too heavy with mayo. The steak was well cooked to temp. It was sufficiently seasoned as well. Delicious roasted potatoes and veggies on the side. The burger was the star! 5 star burger. Fresh roll, perfectly grilled patty. I would go just for the burger. It was insanely good and I would swear it eclipsed the seafood. The brownie sundae was incredible. Safe room for this warm, cake brownie topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. GET DESSERT! CONS: They were out of Calamari, which was really disappointing as I so wanted to try it. The risotto in my flounder special was not very good. I left it after one bite. Risotto is a tough dish to do, and quickly turns into wall spackle if done incorrectly. The risotto was the only real miss here. OVERALL: No waterfront dining, but it's close. Small place with really great food. You can tell they care about the end product. Everything tastes like it's from scratch. I highly recommend this place. Make a reservation. Really pleased to have had such a better experience during a return visit to South Ocean Grill! The menu has some updates, but still boasts fan favorites like the mushroom flatbread and Korean style cauliflower...and of course, one of the best kale salads around. The outdated drink specials were gone and some autumn themed drinks were in place. I 100% noticed that margaritas are served in a wayyyy smaller glass than usual, but in this economy everyone has to cut down somewhere. There were a few new burger options but we were so glad to see that the Roquefort burger was still an option - and it was delicious!! I ordered the crispy chicken paillard which was also great: super crispy and well flavored. The service was on point during this visit, our waitress was lovely and attentive. It looks like some updates were done to the interior as well, it looked a bit updated and stylish-much less cramped. The restroom needs some attention and to repair the lock on the door, but all in all this was a wonderful meal and a spectacular improvement. Back in the rotation for sure! read more

We went here for lunch because our daughter and her husband love this place. We quickly found out why, the place is such cozy hidden gem. The food was amazing and you could tell that the chef was top notch. I can't remember ever having a better steak sandwich than this and I have eaten them at a somewhat famous little steak place on the east end of Long Island a bunch of times. My wife's roquefort cheeseburger , according to her, seemed to be on par with how delicious my meal was as she raved about how delicious it was on the way home too. The service was excellent too. My husband and I ate here today on a day trip to Long Island during our vacation. I told the staff that in ten years of marriage this meal today at South Ocean Grill was in our top three restaurant meals. I was wrong. On the way home we tried to think of two other meals that came even close to this one, and we couldn't. We agreed that this meal was easily our favorite meal in ten years of marriage. My husband's risotto was creamy, the rice was not grainy, spinach was cooked to perfection. His scallops were perfect... and he is a scallops person, as well as a picky eater. He is usually disappointed in restaurant scallops... but not today. These scallops, he said, were perfect. The clam chowder was just clammy enough. My vegetable platter was gorgeous. The grilled flavors of the artichoke, corn, squash and potato were perfect. I ordered mulled wine to go with it and was not disappointed. Last night we ate at a far more expensive restaurant near a ski resort in the Catskills. The meal was good, but we will probably forget it. This meal will be a forever memory. The restaurant itself has an interior design that is simultaneously elegant and relaxed, perfect for a spontaneous lunch as well as a special occasion. When we went here the bathroom was out of order. The waiter was nice to let us know when we arrived before getting us seated. Long story short we had to leave but went back because it was the only one open in the area. So I ordered a veggie burger without bun because they don't have a gluten free bun. According to the description it comes with a BEET patty. However when my order arrived, it was rice and beans with teriyaki glaze. I didn't complain because I actually like rice and beans. It's just not what I ordered or how I expected it to be. It looks like they tried to make a patty out of rice and beans that didn't form like patty. Taste ok. They also accommodate dogs in their outdoor patio. So we were sitting with a bulldog who kept on staring at us because it wanted some food. read more

This was my first time in a very long time I've been here to eat. The restaurant is very cute right by the water on the south shore of Long Island. I ordered the Jumbo scallops and shrimp over spinach risotto. It was delicious! We also had the lime calamari as a starter. The calamari was yummy but I thought there was a lot of breading and not a ton or big pieces of meat in the pieces. The waitress we had was very friendly. Very good. -Petite Kale Salad-10/5, I'll start by saying I'm really not a big salad guy especially kale salad but this was recommended by one of the people in our group so I thought it'd pair well with the tuna. Hands down the absolute BEST salad I've ever had anywhere....ever. Amazing. And HIGHLY recommend. -Crab Cakes-5/5, great flavor nice size and overly fishy at all. Overall I can vouch that the hype in the reviews is real. Very happy I finally came here and got to enjoy such delicious food. The interior is very small maybe 7-8 tables so I can only assume it must be difficult getting seated Thurs-Sun nights but I will absolutely be back. Great restaurant down by the water. Cute charming place with a real cozy feel. Our waitress Jean was super friendly and sweet. I ordered the Roquefort burger and the hubby order the shrimp and chips. Everything tasted fresh and was delicious. Just was enjoying my hubbys company I never took a pics. I also ordered a pear ginger martini which was super tasty. The only thing that was a bit disappointing causing this a 4 star review was when I was leaving I needed to use the restroom which the toilet was clogged. When I told Jean at the time she said ok thanks, never sent someone to fix. So I was unable to use the bathroom before heading back to the festival and home which is 40 mins away. We had an excellent evening while dining at the South Ocean Grill! The customer service is unbeatable! Our hostess Lisa and our waitress was more than accommodating! The food was absolutely delicious! We started our meal with an order of creamy white bean and spinach dip which was a great appetizer! The burger was cooked perfectly and the fries paired with the chipotle aioli were amazing! No complaints on the crab cakes either, cooked to perfection and lightly breaded packed with crab meat. The remoulade sauce was amazing and would recommend getting a bit extra! The table was a big fan of the spinach risotto, a great side dish for the pan seared jumbo scallops & rock shrimp. I will say I was not disappointed at all with what they had to offer. The food here is fresh and cooked to perfection. I ordered the louisiana chicken sandwich while my bf had a fish burger. Each of our sandwiches came with kale salad. Let me say I dislike kale with a passion because to me it's bland. However, the kale salad SOG served was incredible. It was so flavorful and rich! My chicken sandwich was also amazing. The sauce, bread, cheese and chicken were so delicious! We topped things off with a delicious cheesecake. Service here is good, we were the only people in the restaurant on a slow Sunday but the hostess and waitress were super friendly and welcoming. So the day of my long awaited military retirement ceremony arrived and after we had made reservations and were going to be seated in the patio. It was raining so they accommodated us inside (15 ). I had never been here but had some great reviews and it was military family owned. Upon arriving we were seated immediately by the host (very friendly) and took our drink order. In the meantime i went and ask to meet the chef , sorry forgot his name , very polite and assured me dinner would be great. So not many details but out of 15 plates, did not hear one complaint and the drinks were on the money. Great Customer service and dining experience. Hardest review I've ever written 1-5 star. Food first rate, excellent price to value. The dark, low ceiling interior smelled very musty, even moldy, would rate 1 star Our friends wanted to leave, fortunately, we didn't. Outside was not really very inviting 2.5 star, it was drizzling + 1 star, no umbrellas -1 star, no ambiance 3 star. Wonderful waitress, 5 star. Food 5 star for taste, not presentation, so make it 4.5 star ... probably the best calamari 5, but no tentacles which we like and flatbread another 5 any of the four of us have ever had. The mussels, wild, not cultured, were excellent 4, dipping bread unlimited on request, but I spoon it as soup. They ran out of another order of calamari (at lunch!) 3 star. So we went with the shrimp with the same lime sauce and salad. Not quite as good 3.5 star. We were with friends we meet regularly for lunch midway between Cold Spring Harbor and Bridgehampton. The bill was way below what we usually spend 4.5 star. Bathroom an issue 1 star. Suggest eat outside or do take out, unless they take care of the smell.
