escargot - gritty, and hard to finish
    Sydney J.

We enjoyed Russel's on Christmas for dinner. We were visiting the area & I wanted a nice dinner place. It was quaintly decorate & warm, cozy vibe. I recommend making reservations. It was so easy to get call & get a table. We went early at 5:30pm & it was packed when we left. We started with bread for the table which is a must! And the escargot. I have only had it one other time on an island, but the escargot here was gritty & dirty tasting. I would not recommend it. The sauce was delightful but not enough to mask the texture. My son got the King crab leg which came with rice & broccoli. I ordered the filet mignon & glad we didn't order a side because the steak came with broccoli & a portion of au gratin that was perfect sized. The Bernaise sauce was done well, I ordered the Shiitake Chimichurri to try and was not a fan. The staff was attentive. The hostess nice. They took our coats & hung them on the post near our table. Restrooms were clean & tidy. Overall, I would recommend this place when in Vail.

Dear lord I loved this food! Tonight was opening night for the season at Russell's and they sure were ready. Aside from the rude female who snipped at us for walking in 10 minutes early (could have been handled MUCH differently) the evening was amazing. We shared their oysters on the half shell, full rack of ribs and their Mac n cheese which was to die for. The ribs fell off the bone and had the best flavor. Wine selection was amazing as well. Loved our server. She was super sweet. We also purchased the round of beers for the kitchen that's on the menu to celebrate their opening night. Definitely go here! Oh, but don't you dare walk in early lest you'd like your head bitten off. Beautiful interior as well. Oh! And they accept bitcoin upon request!

Wow the food is amazing! Our steaks were perfect they even came with sides (rare these days). Sauces were to die for Cesar salad was perfect! Will definitely be back!

Ordered A filet mignon with a king crab leg. Asked for med rare. After waiting 1:20mins with no appetizers. received well done.

Let me start with. My husband and I loved this place. Whenever we come to Vail, we always made a point to eat here. I Waited for 1hr and 20 mins to get food at our table. Ordered surf. And turf., tThe filet mignon Med. Rare. And a king crab leg. Received well done steak. And un cut or cracked king crab leg. After cutting it up. I received back a cold cut king crab leg and had my cold butter with it. Couldn't wait another 20mins for them to try and cook another steak We were very disappointed. We were looking forward to a good meal. As we have had years ago. Unfortunately I wouldn't recommend this place anymore. Mgr picked up price of steak. and a glass of wine. I feel like my meal should have been picked up. Just for waiting 1hr 20mins. To get my food on the table. Then to have come out of kitchen so sloppy. Over cooked steak and uncut king crab leg. With no crackers.

We sat at the bar and just came for a drink and appetizer. I loved Charles at the bar! He was great energy. My first time trying escargot and it was amazing. We got the bread and dipped it in the butter sauce. Very delicious.

We had a reservation at another restaurant in town, but several employees at the Grand Hyatt said we should switch, so we did- and are so glad we did! We are in Vail on our minimoon and wanted to have a nice steak dinner. When we first walked in the hostess mentioned they were having an issue with their heater if we wanted to come back another night. My husband was already warm so we decided to stay. It wasn't all too bad, but by the end of the night I did use my coat as a blanket on my legs. We got to sit by a table near the river which was nice. Started with scallops with bacon which were delicious. As well as the bread and butter. While the bread was nice not sure I would pay $4 for it again. I had the filet mignon which was perfect. So delicious I barely even used the bear aisle sauce. My husband had the bone in rib-eye what was huge and also great. We ordered their famous scalloped potatoes and Brussels sprouts. The potatoes were delicious and huge and I loved the brussel sprouts. Had a delicious bottle of wine as well! We loved it and are so happy to have stopped by. I read other reviews and people said service was incredible. I don't feel the service was all that great- we only saw our waitress 4 times and I always had empty water. They did seem pretty busy though.

We had a wonderful experience dining here on our first night in Vail. We called to see if they could fit us in within the hour and they did. The restaurant is quaint and tucked away in a little corner next to a creek. They sat us next to the window which gave us a beautiful view of the snow and Christmas lights. The service was excellent and the food was absolutely delicious! We ordered steaks which were perfectly cooked and a side of potatoes au gratin which were very well prepared. I look forward to coming back soon.

We've walked by Russell's many many times and just got around to going. Here's what I'll say about Russell's: the food was great, but not mind blowing. The service was amazing though. Our server was Abigail and she was fantastic. We were seated by the open window that overlooked the walk. The seats were a little tight, but it didn't amount to anything.. My chair was almost touching the woman's behind me. If we'd both had a good guffaw, we would have bumped our heads. The decor was nice. A few wildlife and landscape photos of the area, you know, bears, moose, mountains, that kinda thing. There is an extensive wine list as a steakhouse's list should be. Their beer list had most of the regulars, Coors, Miller, Bud, Sierra Nevada etc. The whiskey and bourbon list was about on par with that. I chose the Jefferson Ocean Aged at Sea with one piece of ice. That came with a cube of ice that was about 2" per edge. Nice touch Russell's. For appetizers, I got escargots. Those were heavy on the curry flavor, already removed from their shells and came with bread. I'm no connoisseur but I though they were good. We also ordered the half and half salad, which was half Caesar and half tomato basil (it had a bunch of pine nuts on it too). That was good, but the romaine was not cut. I guess we got to burn more calories cutting it? Or we could cut it to fit whatever sized bite we wanted. On to the main course... I ordered the bone in ribeye (medium rare plus) and my wife got the NY Strip (medium rare). They both came with some squash and zucchini and a little square of scalloped potatoes. The flavor of my steak was spot on. It was juicy and tender. The marbling of the fat rendered just enough and there was a great crust on it. It really was the star of dinner. My wife's steak was nearly the same, just a little drier due to the cut. All in all, it's a nice homey local's restaurant. The food is good but the service is better. We'll definitely go back. The prices weren't that bad and we had a great time.

It was the day of thanks giving we had no reservations we sat at the bar. Friendly bartender - Emma, she has great leadership skills , she was talking the server about next steps, good communication with her customers, quick in service , food came out right time and tasted great. They have good collection of drinks. I appreciated how much quickly and efficiently they were able to serve the customers. Clean restrooms. Public Parking is available in 2 building just a few steps walking distance. Perfect for fine dining.

What a lovely evening we had celebrating with family at Russell's. From the moment you walk in the restaurant is warm and inviting as is the staff. Bowers was our server and she was fantastic! Very engaging and fun, she made great suggestions and kept a close eye on us so that we never lacked for anything. Emma, the manager was delightful and checked on the table several times during our evening to ensure everything was to our liking. We interacted with several other staff as well and across the board they were great! For appetizers we had the bacon wrapped scallops and I lack the words to properly describe this dish. The scallops were the perfect texture and the flavor is amazing. The wedge salad and Caesar were great as well. I love that they don't cut the Romaine leaves. Entrees were Filet Oscar. Each was cooked to perfection and practically melted in our mouths. For sides we shared the Scalloped potatoes. They were a huge hit with the table. And the asparagus with crab. They shave the asparagus and it is large but super tender and flavorful. I can't pick a favorite both were excellent. Dessert was Crème Brûlée and like everything else could not have been better. I can't recommend Russell's more highly 10/10

Dinner: - Butternut baba ganoush: all the flavors of baba ganoush but with butternut squash, and the warm pita was great - Fire roasted tomato and chorizo soup: a bit on the thinner side, smoky, interesting - Buttermilk sea salt biscuit: rich, flaky, with extra butter, country ham, and red pepper jelly - Warm pimento cheese: I don't usually care for pimento, but their's is great with grilled bread. They also use this on their burger at lunch - Wood grilled octopus: nice wood fire flavor, great ham hock beans underneath, grilled avocado - Crispy brussels sprouts: interesting flavor with the grilled avocado sikil pak - Wood fired pork chop: tender, generously sized - Grilled cobia: wonderful warming pineapple coconut curry, charred pineapple, and fresnos for a kick - Seafood diavolo: very flavorful (my dad found it too salty), served over polenta Lunch items: - Fresh catch: Argentenian shrimp and polenta - like shrimp and grits, very flavorful - Grilled cheese and soup: always a good combo - Burger: we added the onion rings, which had a good kick to them They also had a really solid kids' menu, which I appreciate. It was clean and inviting. They offered an array of choices, so there would be something for everyone if you decide to dine here. The food was good, preparation and display were done carefully, but the taste was overall just ok. The appetizers we chose were Warm Pimento Cheese, which was mildly flavorful, but good, and Prime Beef Carne Apache, which had no flavor at all. The main courses we chose included a pork dish and a chicken dish. The chicken had great flavor, but was placed on a bed of potato wedges which were not all completely cooked through. We felt this took away from the overall dish. The accompanied sauce made with yogurt and poppyseed did not add any flavor to the dish. The pork dish had great flavor. The drinks accompanying the food were made well and tasty. The kids menu has an array of choices as well, and our choice of macaroni and cheese was a hit! We ended with a frozen snicker bar dessert that tasted exactly like a frozen snickers bar. Overall, we had a very nice evening and would definitely visit again.

Not one made eye contact and if you said merry Christmas, the just looked at the floor or past and ignored you. The food was phoned it by the B team. While the prime rib was itself its normal goodness, the remainder of the meal and timing was disappointing. As an example; the blue cheese dressing for the salad was runny and the shallot vinaigrette was made out of vegetable oil. If for some reason it wasn't, it sure tasted like it. It was inedible. As anticipated, the place was gorgeous...with a slightly formal air. Given that it was in the Vail Village (near the ski slope), my husband was able to enter the place in his rugged ski suit. Despite the ambiance, it was a bit dead. I was disappointed with the lack of French music overhead...though maybe it was on so low, I didn't hear it? There were plenty of breakfast-brunch options, but on the menu, some items were noted as taking 20 minutes (which we didn't have time for!), so I was a tad bummed about that. In any case, my husband chose this Huckleberry Bacon French Toast, and I ordered the Maryland Crab Benedict. For drinks, we both just ordered plain coffee. As expected, the foods were good. I was more impressed with my husband's choice, this super-fancy french toast. Not only did it look amazing, it tasted spectacular! Mine was good, but disappointing at the same time. I really liked the Crab Benedict, but I only half-liked the side salad (basically just Arugula with a few Walnuts and Figs). The total bill for these items ran over 100 bucks... which, was to be expected in Vail. However, for such a pricey breakfast, I felt that I should have absolutely loved it...but it felt short of that. Overall, I just expected a bit more from this breakfast experience. Again, the decor was gorgeous, but the ambiance wasn't fully there (because of the lack of music?). Service felt a bit short-skimpy as well. Foods were good, but mine especially (Crab Benedict) felt a bit lacking. Let's just say that I've had Crab Benedicts as just as good for half the price...and with better sides. I tried the porcini mushroom soup with truffle dumplings and all of it was delicious and savory and warm, and even served with a delightful carnation on the side! For the main course I tried the pork shank (Schweinsaxon?) and the meat was fall off the bone good. The mashed potatoes were tasty but the sauerkraut was truly phenomenal. It's not a bargain meal, but it's not nearly as expensive as it could be, being tucked into Vail and visited by a very wealthy cadre of visitors. The service was also great. I commented on one of the waitstaff's steampunk goggles and he asked if I wanted to try them on for a photo op. I declined, but laughed at the invitation. All our questions were answered with politeness and ease, and I was quickly taken care of when I asked to buy a slice of cake on the way out. Would love to make this an annual December visit tradition.

I want to give kudos for a very friendly, attentive staff. However, the cheese fondue dinner was a…read morecomplete disappointment. The amount of fondue was absolutely paltry, especially given it was supposed to serve two people and cost $80. We had a nearly full basket of bread remaining after eating all the cheese. They also provided boiled potatoes and blanched vegetables to dip in the cheese along with dried fruit but that only made the meager cheese situation worse. It was more appetizer sized and even the fondue itself was bland and lackluster with no flavors of kirsch, wine, or other seasonings. We had to go somewhere else to actually get dinner. I appreciate the waiter discounting our meal to try and make up for it. The portions of the other entrees looked good so maybe go here for those and skip the fondue.
