We had dinner at Russell's in Vail last weekend. We had a reservation and were sat immediately. Bowen was our server and she was excellent! Very attentive and friendly. We were never left waiting for service. Bowen brought water right away and took our drink orders. I ordered a dirty Martini which was made perfectly. Cold, filled to the rim and balanced correctly. Everyone else seamed to like their cocktails. We ordered the warm Parker house rolls for the table. They were warm & delicious. Three of us ordered filets cooked medium. The others ordered trout, wiener schnitzel and the ribs. Everyone said their filet's were cooked correctly but all needed seasoning. The béarnaise sauce was light and tasty. The trout was good, ribs were good but not fall off the bone. The other person didn't care for the Wiener schnitzel. The spatzle was hard and crunchy. No flavor. None of us understood the side of scalloped potatoes and broccoli. The scalloped potatoes seamed like they came from a box. Then a few pieces of broccoli thrown on the plate. Not what you would expect from an expensive restaurant. For dessert, we ordered the banana puddin' panna cotta. This was honestly terrible. The key lime tart was refreshing and tasty. Although Russell's is a nice restaurant and our server Bowen was excellent, the food is not on par with the prices. read more

Great steaks! Had the 18oz cowboy ribeye and split it with my wife. More than enough. The creamed spinach was very good . Also excellent bread service . If you get a seat by the window, it's great people watching as everyone coming and going into Vail village has to walk by. The sides were however disappointing- the steak came with some miniature squash and zucchini- that was a bit of a joke next to this big steak ( you had a puny 3 or 4 miniature vegetables ) . Also the little potato square that came with the steak was cold, it felt like it was sitting around a long time and was dried out . Finally the service was very good, they were on top of everything. One thing our waitress did which all great servers should do, get the table cleared and set up BEFORE they bring out the entree. read more

I had the Veal Wiener Schnitzel It was very dried out and no potato salad, only partially cooked potatoes, I didn't eat it. We enjoyed Russel's on Christmas for dinner. We were visiting the area & I wanted a nice dinner place. It was quaintly decorate & warm, cozy vibe. I recommend making reservations. It was so easy to get call & get a table. We went early at 5:30pm & it was packed when we left. We started with bread for the table which is a must! And the escargot. I have only had it one other time on an island, but the escargot here was gritty & dirty tasting. I would not recommend it. The sauce was delightful but not enough to mask the texture. My son got the King crab leg which came with rice & broccoli. I ordered the filet mignon & glad we didn't order a side because the steak came with broccoli & a portion of au gratin that was perfect sized. The Bernaise sauce was done well, I ordered the Shiitake Chimichurri to try and was not a fan. The staff was attentive. The hostess nice. They took our coats & hung them on the post near our table. Dear lord I loved this food! Tonight was opening night for the season at Russell's and they sure were ready. Aside from the rude female who snipped at us for walking in 10 minutes early (could have been handled MUCH differently) the evening was amazing. We shared their oysters on the half shell, full rack of ribs and their Mac n cheese which was to die for. The ribs fell off the bone and had the best flavor. Wine selection was amazing as well. Loved our server. She was super sweet. We also purchased the round of beers for the kitchen that's on the menu to celebrate their opening night. Definitely go here! Decided to check out Russell's for dinner on a recent trip. So disappointed - hate to say but wouldn't return & wouldn't recommend. It was Saturday night - later dinner around 8pm. Ordered a couple drinks and the crab cakes as an app - they were good! Asked the waiter for top dishes and he recommended steak first and trout second. Said they were the favorites. Great - we'll go with both. The Rainbow Trout entree - terrible, fish had no flavor, the olives and pepper mixture on top did not help make this dish better and the rice was absolutely flavorless and cold. The filet with scallop potatoes entree. Filet was great! We've had better potatoes from a box. Looked pretty presentation wise but no flavor and just lukewarm. We had a reservation at another restaurant in town, but several employees at the Grand Hyatt said we should switch, so we did- and are so glad we did! We are in Vail on our minimoon and wanted to have a nice steak dinner. When we first walked in the hostess mentioned they were having an issue with their heater if we wanted to come back another night. My husband was already warm so we decided to stay. It wasn't all too bad, but by the end of the night I did use my coat as a blanket on my legs. We got to sit by a table near the river which was nice. Started with scallops with bacon which were delicious. As well as the bread and butter. While the bread was nice not sure I would pay $4 for it again. I had the filet mignon which was perfect. So delicious I barely even used the bear aisle sauce. My husband had the bone in rib-eye what was huge and also great. We ordered their famous scalloped potatoes and Brussels sprouts. The potatoes were delicious and huge and I loved the brussel sprouts. Had a delicious bottle of wine as well! We loved it and are so happy to have stopped by. I read other reviews and people said service was incredible. I don't feel the service was all that great- we only saw our waitress 4 times and I always had empty water. I'll start with the best part - the service was very good. Adam was our server. He was kind personable and attended to us right away. The food, on the other hand. We had high expectations given the establishment has been around for a while. The espresso martini and dirty martinis were watered down. The French onion soup had a really bizarre thick layer of cheese and bread that was hard to break through to get to the soup itself. The Caesar salad tasted like straight anchovies with no other seasoning. The scallops weren't real scallops - the texture and consistency were off. The bacon that was wrapped around it was probably to mask the fact that it wasn't a real scallop, and it wasn't cooked through. We ordered 3 ribeyes of different temperatures and they had no idea which were which. At the end of the day it didn't matter because they were all raw anyway. They did offer take the steaks back to cook some more but it basically just charred the edges and kept the centers undercooked. The broccoli on the side was steamed in a bag and without any seasoning at all. The bison ribeye tasted like old meat. The only good thing about the meal itself were the oysters and the banana panna cotta dessert. It's incredible this place is still open. We ended up spending the same amount of money as we did at a Four Seasons restaurant a few nights before with significantly worse food. The stars are basically for the host and Adam. We had a wonderful experience dining here on our first night in Vail. We called to see if they could fit us in within the hour and they did. The restaurant is quaint and tucked away in a little corner next to a creek. They sat us next to the window which gave us a beautiful view of the snow and Christmas lights. The service was excellent and the food was absolutely delicious! We ordered steaks which were perfectly cooked and a side of potatoes au gratin which were very well prepared. We've walked by Russell's many many times and just got around to going. Here's what I'll say about Russell's: the food was great, but not mind blowing. The service was amazing though. Our server was Abigail and she was fantastic. We were seated by the open window that overlooked the walk. The seats were a little tight, but it didn't amount to anything.. My chair was almost touching the woman's behind me. If we'd both had a good guffaw, we would have bumped our heads. The decor was nice. A few wildlife and landscape photos of the area, you know, bears, moose, mountains, that kinda thing. There is an extensive wine list as a steakhouse's list should be. Their beer list had most of the regulars, Coors, Miller, Bud, Sierra Nevada etc. The whiskey and bourbon list was about on par with that. I chose the Jefferson Ocean Aged at Sea with one piece of ice. That came with a cube of ice that was about 2" per edge. Nice touch Russell's. For appetizers, I got escargots. Those were heavy on the curry flavor, already removed from their shells and came with bread. I'm no connoisseur but I though they were good. We also ordered the half and half salad, which was half Caesar and half tomato basil (it had a bunch of pine nuts on it too). That was good, but the romaine was not cut. I guess we got to burn more calories cutting it? Or we could cut it to fit whatever sized bite we wanted. On to the main course... I ordered the bone in ribeye (medium rare plus) and my wife got the NY Strip (medium rare). They both came with some squash and zucchini and a little square of scalloped potatoes. The flavor of my steak was spot on. It was juicy and tender. The marbling of the fat rendered just enough and there was a great crust on it. It really was the star of dinner. My wife's steak was nearly the same, just a little drier due to the cut. All in all, it's a nice homey local's restaurant. The food is good but the service is better. We'll definitely go back. What a lovely evening we had celebrating with family at Russell's. From the moment you walk in the restaurant is warm and inviting as is the staff. Bowers was our server and she was fantastic! Very engaging and fun, she made great suggestions and kept a close eye on us so that we never lacked for anything. Emma, the manager was delightful and checked on the table several times during our evening to ensure everything was to our liking. We interacted with several other staff as well and across the board they were great! For appetizers we had the bacon wrapped scallops and I lack the words to properly describe this dish. The scallops were the perfect texture and the flavor is amazing. The wedge salad and Caesar were great as well. I love that they don't cut the Romaine leaves. Entrees were Filet Oscar. Each was cooked to perfection and practically melted in our mouths. For sides we shared the Scalloped potatoes. They were a huge hit with the table. And the asparagus with crab. They shave the asparagus and it is large but super tender and flavorful. I can't pick a favorite both were excellent. Dessert was Crème Brûlée and like everything else could not have been better. I must warn other customers of the scam billing this place does with the "free bread" They charged me like $8 for the so called " free bread" that you are suppose to get. This bread was normally included before a meal at this very restaurant until the last time I went. The waitress just said like " would you like bread" instead of asking if we wanted to " ORDER bread or PURCHASE bread" in order to try to slip it in. There was zero indication this was something they were going to charge you for. The bread plates were already at the table when we arrived. In America, restaurants are not suppose to charge you for the bread before a dinner especially at a fancy restaurant. Very deceptive and underhanded. Maybe I should charge them transportation cost of me driving to their restaurant? I don't know how this got started but do not think it has gone unnoticed. I use to go here a number of years ago and it used to be good however they are under new ownership now and they are now trying to nickel and dime you on the so called " free bread" Very disappointing they would sink to this low for a quick buck. You get a lot of "modern" looking places and when you're in a mountain town, having a high scale rustic feel makes you imagine good style stands the test of time. I love that the bartender at the front of the restaurant likes to make their customers happy and (if you're nice enough), might even make you a drink of your own with their expertise. We were promptly served by a friendly and knowledgeable bartender. Old Fashioned was terrific and well made. I ordered the Cowboy Ribeye (no side) medium rare. The food came out in the expected timeframe, and was perfectly cooked. Flavor was beefy, and the Bernaise sauce balanced the flavors out well. In short, it was awesome! Went to celebrate my daughters' 15th this year, after a rough year when her father passed. We were ignored for the table to our right, perhaps we were not going to be spendy enough, and then received no kindnesses, even after explaining it was a birthday. Fui a preguntar dónde era el baño y también le pregunté a la host si aquí en Vail era legal enviar a alguien a lactar al baño. I know this place has a pretty solid reputation as a Vail staple, but I was simply underwhelmed with our experience. The crab legs aren't cut, which makes for a messy experience at the already crowded table. The bread isn't complimentary as it is at most fine dining steakhouses. It is warm and fresh but plain. The bone in rib-eye was thin and lacked flavor. Grouper on special was flavorful. I'd say that dessert stole the show, the MudPie dessert was excellent. Chocolate cake seemed like it came from a box, cheesecake felt similarly pre packaged. After dinner coffee was so weak that I thought they accidentally brought me a hot tea. As an aside, the inside of the restaurant is VERY warm. Dress accordingly. read more

I really appreciate that they have a vegan option and a kids option. The vegan option is not on the menu yet but it is the impossible burger without the bun (lettuce wrap). The kid's option is spaghetti with marinara, which the kids loved. Best service we have received during our vacation to Colorado, very friendly staff.
