Bread service
T W.

Great steaks! Had the 18oz cowboy ribeye and split it with my wife. More than enough. The creamed spinach was very good . Also excellent bread service . If you get a seat by the window, it's great people watching as everyone coming and going into Vail village has to walk by. The sides were however disappointing- the steak came with some miniature squash and zucchini- that was a bit of a joke next to this big steak ( you had a puny 3 or 4 miniature vegetables ) . Also the little potato square that came with the steak was cold, it felt like it was sitting around a long time and was dried out . Finally the service was very good, they were on top of everything. One thing our waitress did which all great servers should do, get the table cleared and set up BEFORE they bring out the entree.

escargot - gritty, and hard to finish

We enjoyed Russel's on Christmas for dinner. We were visiting the area & I wanted a nice dinner place. It was quaintly decorate & warm, cozy vibe. I recommend making reservations. It was so easy to get call & get a table. We went early at 5:30pm & it was packed when we left. We started with bread for the table which is a must! And the escargot. I have only had it one other time on an island, but the escargot here was gritty & dirty tasting. I would not recommend it. The sauce was delightful but not enough to mask the texture. My son got the King crab leg which came with rice & broccoli. I ordered the filet mignon & glad we didn't order a side because the steak came with broccoli & a portion of au gratin that was perfect sized. The Bernaise sauce was done well, I ordered the Shiitake Chimichurri to try and was not a fan. The staff was attentive. The hostess nice. They took our coats & hung them on the post near our table. Restrooms were clean & tidy. Overall, I would recommend this place when in Vail.

Opening day

Dear lord I loved this food! Tonight was opening night for the season at Russell's and they sure were ready. Aside from the rude female who snipped at us for walking in 10 minutes early (could have been handled MUCH differently) the evening was amazing. We shared their oysters on the half shell, full rack of ribs and their Mac n cheese which was to die for. The ribs fell off the bone and had the best flavor. Wine selection was amazing as well. Loved our server. She was super sweet. We also purchased the round of beers for the kitchen that's on the menu to celebrate their opening night. Definitely go here! Oh, but don't you dare walk in early lest you'd like your head bitten off. Beautiful interior as well. Oh! And they accept bitcoin upon request!

Wow the food is amazing! Our steaks were perfect they even came with sides (rare these days). Sauces were to die for Cesar salad was perfect! Will definitely be back!

We sat at the bar and just came for a drink and appetizer. I loved Charles at the bar! He was great energy. My first time trying escargot and it was amazing. We got the bread and dipped it in the butter sauce. Very delicious.

Ordered A filet mignon with a king crab leg. Asked for med rare. After waiting 1:20mins with no appetizers. received well done.

Let me start with. My husband and I loved this place. Whenever we come to Vail, we always made a point to eat here. I Waited for 1hr and 20 mins to get food at our table. Ordered surf. And turf., tThe filet mignon Med. Rare. And a king crab leg. Received well done steak. And un cut or cracked king crab leg. After cutting it up. I received back a cold cut king crab leg and had my cold butter with it. Couldn't wait another 20mins for them to try and cook another steak We were very disappointed. We were looking forward to a good meal. As we have had years ago. Unfortunately I wouldn't recommend this place anymore. Mgr picked up price of steak. and a glass of wine. I feel like my meal should have been picked up. Just for waiting 1hr 20mins. To get my food on the table. Then to have come out of kitchen so sloppy. Over cooked steak and uncut king crab leg. With no crackers.

Filet Mignon, scalloped potatoes and Brussels sprouts

We had a reservation at another restaurant in town, but several employees at the Grand Hyatt said we should switch, so we did- and are so glad we did! We are in Vail on our minimoon and wanted to have a nice steak dinner. When we first walked in the hostess mentioned they were having an issue with their heater if we wanted to come back another night. My husband was already warm so we decided to stay. It wasn't all too bad, but by the end of the night I did use my coat as a blanket on my legs. We got to sit by a table near the river which was nice. Started with scallops with bacon which were delicious. As well as the bread and butter. While the bread was nice not sure I would pay $4 for it again. I had the filet mignon which was perfect. So delicious I barely even used the bear aisle sauce. My husband had the bone in rib-eye what was huge and also great. We ordered their famous scalloped potatoes and Brussels sprouts. The potatoes were delicious and huge and I loved the brussel sprouts. Had a delicious bottle of wine as well! We loved it and are so happy to have stopped by. I read other reviews and people said service was incredible. I don't feel the service was all that great- we only saw our waitress 4 times and I always had empty water. They did seem pretty busy though.

Half and half salad

We've walked by Russell's many many times and just got around to going. Here's what I'll say about Russell's: the food was great, but not mind blowing. The service was amazing though. Our server was Abigail and she was fantastic. We were seated by the open window that overlooked the walk. The seats were a little tight, but it didn't amount to anything.. My chair was almost touching the woman's behind me. If we'd both had a good guffaw, we would have bumped our heads. The decor was nice. A few wildlife and landscape photos of the area, you know, bears, moose, mountains, that kinda thing. There is an extensive wine list as a steakhouse's list should be. Their beer list had most of the regulars, Coors, Miller, Bud, Sierra Nevada etc. The whiskey and bourbon list was about on par with that. I chose the Jefferson Ocean Aged at Sea with one piece of ice. That came with a cube of ice that was about 2" per edge. Nice touch Russell's. For appetizers, I got escargots. Those were heavy on the curry flavor, already removed from their shells and came with bread. I'm no connoisseur but I though they were good. We also ordered the half and half salad, which was half Caesar and half tomato basil (it had a bunch of pine nuts on it too). That was good, but the romaine was not cut. I guess we got to burn more calories cutting it? Or we could cut it to fit whatever sized bite we wanted. On to the main course... I ordered the bone in ribeye (medium rare plus) and my wife got the NY Strip (medium rare). They both came with some squash and zucchini and a little square of scalloped potatoes. The flavor of my steak was spot on. It was juicy and tender. The marbling of the fat rendered just enough and there was a great crust on it. It really was the star of dinner. My wife's steak was nearly the same, just a little drier due to the cut. All in all, it's a nice homey local's restaurant. The food is good but the service is better. We'll definitely go back. The prices weren't that bad and we had a great time.

Filet Mignon Diane - delicious !

We had a wonderful experience dining here on our first night in Vail. We called to see if they could fit us in within the hour and they did. The restaurant is quaint and tucked away in a little corner next to a creek. They sat us next to the window which gave us a beautiful view of the snow and Christmas lights. The service was excellent and the food was absolutely delicious! We ordered steaks which were perfectly cooked and a side of potatoes au gratin which were very well prepared. I look forward to coming back soon.

It was the day of thanks giving we had no reservations we sat at the bar. Friendly bartender - Emma, she has great leadership skills , she was talking the server about next steps, good communication with her customers, quick in service , food came out right time and tasted great. They have good collection of drinks. I appreciated how much quickly and efficiently they were able to serve the customers. Clean restrooms. Public Parking is available in 2 building just a few steps walking distance. Perfect for fine dining.

And to stumble upon this chic and inconspicuous cocktail bar in the busy downtown was something I wasn't expecting and became a treat after a nice stroll through the town after dinner in my hotel room. From the moment I stepped inside, I knew I was at the place where my heart was calling for. There were two gents at the bar and one of them warmly greeted me and said I could sit anywhere I would like. I hence picked one of the bar seats. Except one table that was occupied by a couple I was the only one. I appeared to have picked the right time; I had the whole bar to myself (eventually though, several different groups of people streamed in; only a few of them sat at the bar close to me. The bar was spacious enough to comfortably accommodate a little over 10 people.) Jeremy, who greeted me upon arrival, was a super host. As soon as I explained that wine is my usual got-to, he said he could mix and match reds and whites to create a "flight" based on what I had told him as to my likings. His extensive explanations as to what sorts of reds and whites the bar offers/serves was (of course) all in his memory. His eloquent speech with no filler words truly impressed me; he sure is a wine connoisseur. What he picked for me were... -2024 Pepiere "Les Gras Moutons" (Muscadet) -Kobal "Bajta", Hazole Belo (aka Orange Wine) -Sandlands "Red Table Wine (Lodi Red Blend) With his wealth of knowledge, after giving him only a hint of what I liked, what Jeremy selected for me to sample/sip was a superb choice. All of them were world-class excellence with elegance and beauty. I carefully and slowly sipped each one little by little to truly immerse myself in the art of wine. Yes, wine is a piece of art for sure. I think I said it correctly at the beginning of this review. This is a cocktail bar with variety of spirits which Jeremy could easily concoct just about anything from gin-based one to vodka-based one to tequila-based ones to whiskey-based one to name several. For those who don't drink, their zero-proof section also has something interesting to browse and choose. Not to mention, rotating pilsner or IPA on tap to name a few from the beer section as well. If you need a little bite to eat, their (changing) food menu has a good number of New American-style plates. The bar originally opened in a different building back in 2015 (I believe). They moved to the current location in 2019. They also offer various different classes so you can expand/extend your knowledge. So for your next foodie vacation in Vail, make sure to include Root & Flower in your list.

Waiter had no problem with it, and I bet that's ridiculously easy for the kitchen to do, especially because they have other menu items that have cheese slices in it (e.g. grilled cheese on the kids menu). But I guess some manager dude woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning and decided that he needed to go on a power trip. He personally came over to our table to say that they will not replace the cheese. And then he had the nerve to ask us why we don't want the pimento cheese. Does everyone have to like the flavor of pimento cheese? If I owned a business and one of my staff did that, I would have fired that person on the spot and given them advice to change their line of work because you can't fix or train out that sort of lacking judgement.

He was by himself and she gave the table with six chairs to him. His full party was clearly not there but she sat him anyway. Why is that allowed? Clearly favoritism. And to be clear, two of his friends showed up and the other three never arrived. So, at that point we told the hostess we were now a table of four and she said we could sit at a table that had 3 chairs. Well okay....we took it. We grabbed the table and asked other tables around us for the extra 3 chairs and everyone was nice enough to give us the extra chairs. Our server, Suzanne was excellent. As anticipated, the place was gorgeous...with a slightly formal air. Given that it was in the Vail Village (near the ski slope), my husband was able to enter the place in his rugged ski suit. Despite the ambiance, it was a bit dead. I was disappointed with the lack of French music overhead...though maybe it was on so low, I didn't hear it? There were plenty of breakfast-brunch options, but on the menu, some items were noted as taking 20 minutes (which we didn't have time for!), so I was a tad bummed about that. In any case, my husband chose this Huckleberry Bacon French Toast, and I ordered the Maryland Crab Benedict. For drinks, we both just ordered plain coffee. As expected, the foods were good. I was more impressed with my husband's choice, this super-fancy french toast. Not only did it look amazing, it tasted spectacular! Mine was good, but disappointing at the same time. I really liked the Crab Benedict, but I only half-liked the side salad (basically just Arugula with a few Walnuts and Figs). The total bill for these items ran over 100 bucks... which, was to be expected in Vail. However, for such a pricey breakfast, I felt that I should have absolutely loved it...but it felt short of that. Overall, I just expected a bit more from this breakfast experience. Again, the decor was gorgeous, but the ambiance wasn't fully there (because of the lack of music?). Service felt a bit short-skimpy as well. Foods were good, but mine especially (Crab Benedict) felt a bit lacking. Let's just say that I've had Crab Benedicts as just as good for half the price...and with better sides. Maybe lunch or dinner experience is better here? In any case, am glad we checked out the place...but I doubt I'll choose it for breakfast again.
