11/10 experience at Juniper! This was the best dining experience we've had this trip! My husband cleaned every single plate. When we walked in, we were immediately greeted by the owner (who was working as the host!) and we felt that he paid great attention to detail. He even let us pick where we wanted to sit! Our favorite appetizer was the pork belly - so much flavor with the squash and apple. I loved the vegetarian dish - lions mane mushrooms with vegan cheese and shaved veggies. We came here for Christmas dinner on the recommendation of a coworker. We were staying in Vail and decided to leave the village in hopes of, if not saving money, finding food that was a better value for the expense. Unfortunately, we didn't find it at Juniper. We walked in and there was no "Merry Christmas" or "happy holidays" or really any welcome whatsoever. We were then led to a high top that was next to a temporary wall, so it was a bit cold. I will never understand why restaurants that charge $45-$75 for an entre will sit people at a high top - this is Uncomfortable. Women in heels do not want to try to find a place for their feet. Also, there was no reason for it - it wasn't saving space. It could have just been a regular table. The service was lacking, to say the least. The menu doesn't have a lot of descriptions, including important information about size of beef portions, but the server didn't provide this information until asked. Even the $100 wagyu special made NO mention of the fact that it was 5oz and only one raviolo (though the menu said 'ravioli') - we didn't order this anyway. We ordered the duck confit pizza ($30), pork chop entre ($50), brussels sprout salad ($20), side order of crab cakes ($25), and side order of potato croquettes ($16). The duck pizza was decent but for $30, the crust was rather flavorless - if the crust was a chewy, charred sourdough, this would have been perfect. At least the duck was good. It was a sizeable portion, so if you're only 2 people and you order this, I would not order another app. The pork chop was a properly sized entree with tasty sides. It was cooked well and the only complaint we had was that the bacon really took away from the flavor. The menu did say bacon, so it wasn't a surprise, but it was unnecessary to the plate. The brussels sprout salad for $20 a bit of a disappointment. It was small and overly vinegary. There were 5 small cubes of butternut squash that could have just been boiled. It's a salad, so I'm not expecting fireworks, but like, do something different? The crabcakes were - as the server pointed out - very small. They tasted great and came with a small frisee salad, and the preparation was good but wow, so small. Not worth $25. The potato croquettes were the biggest disappointment. They were four TINY pomme dauphines that barely had potato in them - if you pressed on them, they entirely compressed. Do not order this. And then, we get the bill, and the Bombay martini I ordered was $24.50. The same martini in Vail Village cost me $20 the night before (and the same martini at a comparable place in Denver would have been $18). The other cocktails were $18, so I really can't imagine why this drink would be 30%+ more. Overall, I can't say I'd recommend this place. Just go to Vail and have dinner - at least then, you won't be annoyed at the cost. read more

Have always wanted to like Juniper, but they consistently disappoint. !st time there we ordered a filet medium rare and the meat was grisly & overcooked and when we were asked how it was and we complained, the waiter claimed my wife didn't understand what she ordered. This evening a group of local women had an outing culminating in diner there. Salad came out over dressed after requesting to have dressing on the side.. Duck confit pizza came out raw and when pointed out, the half eaten pizza was reheated and returned burnt. My son and I joined group after meal was completed and waiter was condescending when we ordered wine. Overall experience was way below expectation. Will not return. First of all, the service here is exceptional. For fine dining this is an excellent option. My husband enjoyed his steak, which was prepared, medium, and exactly as he liked it. The toffee dessert was exquisite, and even though I didn't have room for it, I am glad we chose it to share. Absolutely the worst meal ever. Couldn't cut the chicken with a knife and the nocchi was over cooked to the point a fork was not useful. I wish I could give them zero stars. Misleading location information leads you to believe this restaurant is in Vail. We canceled the reservation as we did not have a car. They told us that we would be charged for canceling late but issued a gift card for the amount of the charge. We were charged $250 ($50 per person) and not provided with a gift card. When we called to ask for a concession or at least the promised gift card they gave us the run around and were rude. Doug was rude to my wife and would not return calls. He basically told us to suck it. Beware of doing business with these people. read more

Google had this restaurant located in Vail.. It is located outside of Vail in a town called Edwards. I tried to cancel my reservation because of driving issues. Their reservation cancelation policy states you get a gift card if you have to cancel.. Doug the manager refused to talk to me about the google location or the gift card. The management charged my account a $250 cancellation fee even when the place was wide open on the night I cancelled. Doug basically told me to suck it... Warning they do not honor their gift card policy based on cancellation. read more

We stopped at Juniper on our way to Eagle and our dinner was fantastic! My husband had the halibut and risotto and I had the trout and crab cake. Both were excellent! I called to cancel our reservation at Juniper (after their "24-hour deadline") for a party of 5, due to a child that was coughing as explained to the owner Doug. Without any apologies, he told me that he's still going to charge my card "if he couldn't rebook the table" - but would issue a restaurant gift card to be used at a later date. My credit card was charged the $250 - though it's hard to believe he didn't rebook the table - it's season in the ski areas and the restaurants are packed. He likely just uses the "if I can't rebook" as a standard line and uses his policy as a penalty. We decided to use the $250 gift card the very next night (now a party of 3) while still in town (restaurant was packed), and he presented the card upon checking in at the host stand. Our meal was very good - their veal scallopini was excellent. Upon receiving the check of $189, I put down the $250 gift card and told our server "the balance is for you" (32% gratuity). However, the server said that I couldn't use the gift card for the gratuity! That's the restaurant's "policy". Since we were seated at the table right behind the host stand, the owner Doug overheard and came over to reiterate "no gratuity on gift card", and he said to me "you're going to stiff the waiter?" I replied, "no - YOU'RE going to stiff the waiter by not giving him the $60 gratuity I left for him." What if I got the gift card as a Christmas gift - you mean if I dined at the restaurant, I'd have to pay a gratuity separately from the gift I received? Certainly not the intention of gift givers - as I've given restaurant gift cards myself many times. Well, I left the $250 gift card and will leave it up to owner Doug if he wants to stiff his staff. After reading many other reviews of Juniper and the nasty attitude of the owner, I guess I'm not surprised that he'd set up this scheme of "no gratuities on gift cards", thinking that "I'm probably a tourist and will never use the $61 balance", pocketing it for himself. read more

Let me just tell you the service was fantastic, and we really appreciated Cody being our waiter. He was extremely attentive. He was on top of his job. He was very friendly and professional. The restaurant was appointed nicely, and we had enough space between the tables where we did not feel like we were sitting with strangers. The food was remarkably fantastic! We ordered pork chops for one dish and the organic salmon. The truffle was a nice note . For dessert we ordered Crème Brûlée and flourless chocolate cake. In response to Bill's comment below, I was one of the women in the group and have to totally disagree. Bill was not there until after the meal was finished and everybody at our end of the table, including the person with the duck confit pizza, loved their meal. I do believe there was a misunderstanding when Bill ordered wine and asked for four glasses, but instead of saying something when it was delivered, they enjoyed their wine and then complained. read more

However, our recent visit, marred by the appalling service provided by waiter Michael C., has left us with no choice but to bid farewell to what was once our go-to dining spot. From the moment we were seated, it was evident that something was amiss. Michael's demeanor was far from welcoming; instead, he appeared disinterested and aloof. Despite our attempts to engage him in conversation and express our excitement about our meal, he remained indifferent, barely acknowledging our presence. His incompetence became glaringly apparent as he fumbled through taking our orders, frequently mixing up items and forgetting simple requests. The wait time for our food was excruciatingly long, with Michael offering no apologies or explanations for the delay. When our dishes finally arrived, they were disappointingly lukewarm, indicating a lack of attention to detail in the kitchen. Heck, one of the surf and turf plates they forgot the lobster. he told us he didn't work in the kitchen but he ordered it correctly. He never brought the lobster. Throughout the meal, Michael's neglect continued, as he failed to refill our drinks or check on us to ensure everything was satisfactory. When we attempted to flag him down for assistance, he would casually saunter past our table, seemingly oblivious to our needs. What truly irked us was his dismissive attitude when we voiced our concerns about the service. Instead of addressing our grievances with professionalism and courtesy, Michael shrugged off our complaints, displaying a shocking level of apathy towards customer satisfaction. As patrons who have consistently supported Juniper over the years, it pains us to sever ties with a dining establishment that was once a cherished part of our culinary repertoire. However, the abysmal service rendered by waiter Michael C. has left us with no other recourse. It's regrettable that the actions of one individual have tarnished our perception of this restaurant irreparably. In conclusion, until Juniper takes decisive steps to rectify the issues plaguing its service standards, we can no longer justify patronizing an establishment that fails to prioritize the comfort and satisfaction of its customers. read more

This is one of those rare occasions on which I get to celebrate my friend Brian's birthday in person. So he gets to pick the venue, since he knows the local scene in Vail/Beaver Creek a heck of lot better than the other two ski bachelors (all 3 wives were unable, or unwilling, to come). Brian had said that he picked a place that's "not expensive" since I had proposed to Ned that we treat him - I think that might be by Vail standards :-) We were seated promptly in a dim, rustic dining room that ended being 75% full - not bad for a Monday. Cocktails run around $13 while wines vary (seems to be a pretty good wine list). I chose the sea bass and some Dryland SB to wash it down with ($11 a glass is an OK price for a place like that I guess. We shared a PEI mussels app ($18) - a first for Brian, and he liked it! The mussels tasted really good, but seemed to be a little small for "1 lb". My sea bass ($42) was absolutely delicious, but on the small side (5-6 oz.) - I was eyeing jealously at Ned's black cod, which must have been 9-10 oz. See I had chosen the sea bass because, at a difference of $2, who wouldn't? Well had I known there's a size difference too, I believe I would have reconsidered - skiing makes you hungry, you know! Brian chose the elk ($38), which he pronounced delish and devoured. This is clearly a well-run kitchen with a skilled chef. So why 'only' 4 stars? Several small factors, all of which add up. As mentioned, more than the price level, it was the lack of transparency in the 2 fish dishes. We'd told our waitress that it was Brian's b-day, and when we came around to ask what dessert he wanted, we all thought it'd be comp'd. Call it mis-communication, I guess (she even charged the extra $3.50 for the ice cream that she recommended to be added to the toffee cake!) If the occasion arises, we would return. For the most part very nice a little room for improvement overall. Let's start with what was great, our waitress was wonderful. We asked her for menu recommendations and her insight was spot on. I ordered the tuna, it was delicious, fresh, seasoned well and the presentation was good. I really liked the flavor of the mushrooms with the fish and the sauce added the correct balance of fat and acidity to really bring out the flavor of the fish. The texture of the shrimp was a nice contrast and complemented the rest of the dish. My wife had the filet and lobster duo, the filet was cooked correctly and was well seasoned. Let's talk about where there was some room for improvement. The hostess. She was pretentious, It was just unnecessary and not how I was looking to start my experience. I ordered a draft beer, it was not poured correctly and came to the table over carbonated, I didn't finish it. The lobster that came with my wife's dinner was over cooked. In fairness the food and experience were both good. None of these are deal breakers, at this price point it's fair to critique all aspects of service and experience. I would eat here again as the food was well prepared and tasty. I was hoping for a bit more out of this experience. Restaurant was LOUD and bustling. I would not recommend for a first date or anytime you'd like to focus on conversation. We felt like we were yelling over other customers to hear each other. We dined on a Friday night, and the bar area was very crowded. People were standing around near our table waiting for a seat at the bar. It was distracting. The food was just okay. The bread was cold. The trout was plain, lacking spice. The menu was very standard--steak, salmon, vegetables, etc. So picky eaters will be able to dine here. But nothing new, fresh, or exciting. I probably will look to other restaurants when I'm back in the area. read more

The food is good. The service was good in the beginning but by the end all of us ran out of water by the end. The lobster was lack luster and tasted like frozen microwaved lobster but the filet mignon was very flavorful. We had our glasses filled once and the hostess spilled a glass of water on our table. The white table cloth had stains and holes not what I expected from a restaurant that charge $50 a plate. The tables are not spaced out enough I was literally in a corner and the table was so close to the wall my head kept touching the picture above the table. We had a party of 8 including 2 children under the age of 10. We were seated at a table that was 12 inches away from the front door & reception for all incoming parties. We told the hostess when we arrived that we did not want to be so close to the entrance, & were informed that was the only option we had. Every time a new party arrived our conversations were interrupted & we were uncomfortably close to people coming into the restaurant. After we paid I told the manager that the food was good but that the table was in a terrible location. He was extraordinarily rude & nasty.
