The food had great presentation with great flavor flavors. The lump blue crab bucatini was the favorite item. I probably would not order the lamb again although the lamb sausage part of the dish was amazing, I think other items on the menu might have been a better choice. Cocktails and service were great but be careful if you order something magical, it comes in a unicorn cup. I was glad my wife ordered it and not me, lol. Not pictured is a Hamachi Crudo appetizer, which was very tasty. The sticky toffee pudding cake reminded me of desserts. I've had another nice restaurants - they made it special for us without the peanut brittle and I bet it is even better with the brittle. If you are looking for a high end restaurant with an amazing view and delicious food, sweet basil is the place for you! I have been here many times over the years but my recent visit was by far the best! We started off with the whipped feta appetizer, which was very big and definitely shareable. The feta was so smooth and creamy and paired well with the cracker and honey. Next I had the filet mignon. This was out of this world. Filet was so tender and delicious. It would have been great on its own but the sauce was delicious along with all the accompaniments! It was a very thoughtful meal. Others in my party had the halibut and lamb and both were amazing! We did not have dessert this time but I have had the sticky toffee pudding and it's amazing!!! The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because one of the halibuts came out a little cold. Sweet Basil is our go to special occasion restaurant when spending time in Vail. The atmosphere is modern yet cozy, befitting a mountain town. There is a welcoming bar as you enter, with several different dining spaces, each with its own intimate feel. I've never had a bad meal here and every time we take guests they are blown away! On our most recent visit over the winter holiday season, my partner and I had another wonderful experience. Our server was knowledgeable, attentive and non-obtrusive. I am pescatarian and gluten free and they were attentive to my dietary needs. We split the tuna and octopus appetizers, both absolutely delicious. For entrees I had the trout which was delicate but flavorful and my partner enjoyed the lamb. Portion sizes are fitting of fine dining, enough to be satisfied while not being stuffed. This is an amazing restaurant. We came for lunch and thankfully there was availability. I would definitely suggest making reservations to make sure you have a spot since this place is located in the heart of Vail. From the moment you walk in, the place is warm and inviting and has a killer bar. We sat towards the back of the restaurant near the window overlooking the creek. The menu is small but the food is spectacular. We went with the Caesar salad to start which was very fresh. I loved the dressing. It was tangy with hints of mustard and the saltiness of the anchovies. For entree we went with the special of the day which was a 6oz filet with truffle fries and a bone marrow sauce. It was cooked to perfection and very flavorful on its own. The bone marrow sauce really just added another layer to the steak. The fries were crisp and the truffle was not overpowering. We were seated immediately for lunch and got great seats in the back with an amazing view. Our waiter was amazing and friendly. We tried their Caesar salad which was so flavorful and had fresh crisp lettuce. It does come with anchovies. So if you're sensitive to that then I recommend not to get it. This place was our favorite dinner spot in Vail. The menu changes frequently so I appreciate recent reviews with pictures. The food is always delicious. Parking is free in the VTC garage. I wish it just wasn't so super expensive but once in a while, it's a really nice treat. We usually can't get a reservation so we try our luck at the bar and have been seated there the last two times. It's always fun to chat up others and we met a couple of fun ladies sitting next to us. Tyler was our server and took good care of us. Food... we ordered the Caesar salad. It was good but the last time we had it, it was very memorable and more crisp and citrus in a way that really made us want to come back for it. We tried the foie gras bateau. I really like the rich taste of foie gras, so the mango gel really overpowered the foie gras so I just ate it separately in layers. I wouldn't order it again. Beef tenderloin was cooked perfectly throughout for medium rare but it could've been a touch more flash seared on a pan or grill. I enjoyed eating the mushroom with the steak. The turnips didn't have much flavor and the stems were hard to cut on the rough stone plate with a steak knife. The Super Tuscan wine was very nice. Tyler described it well that it was peppery and bold. Most times we've really been impressed with our meal but this night was a little disappointing for such a large $240 bill for 2. I'm not sure we'll be back anytime soon. There are a lot of options at this price point in town so we might try something else next time. read more

This review could be the result of extremely high expectations not met as it is one of 2 Michelin recommended restaurants in Vail. To start the decor is nice and comfortable with a nice view of the river through large windows. One complaint here being the restaurant was uncomfortably hot. I took off my sweater. The service was outstanding and our waitress was awesome, and so nice!! But the food...It was nothing special and we had nearly everything on their menu amongst the 5 of us in our party. I could make this review tediously long by reviewing each item, but the common complaint I have for just about everything was that they were all pretty bland. No real flavor. Meh.. I had high hopes for Sweet Basil, but unfortunately, the meal didn't live up to expectations. We started with the Feta Appetizer, which was decent and had a good balance of sweetness and savory cheese, but nothing spectacular. Then we moved on to the Shrimp Appetizer, and that's where things went downhill. The shrimp was ridiculously over-seasoned -- so salty that it actually burned our tongue. It was almost inedible, and I found myself unable to enjoy it at all. Next, we tried the bread rolls and the Ricotta Gnocchi. While the gnocchi itself was well balanced with the mozzarella and artichokes, there wasn't enough flavor to redeem the rest of the meal. The bread was just okay, and honestly, I was hoping for something more exciting given the restaurant's reputation. If you're looking for a great meal in this area, I'd honestly recommend heading downstairs to Mountain Standard. The food there was a big more satisfying. It's been a few years since I've been back, and Sweet Basil (and their sister restaurant, Mountain Standard) remain our go-to places in the Vail village. As of recently, they got some recognition for their cocktail program, which is well deserved. Since I reviewed it previously, I don't want to re-hash everything, but here are some highlights: 1. Cocktails: great cocktail program - The Fifth Leaf: vodka based with bnanana, pandan, shiso - Something Magical: rum based, with passion fruit, aperol, lemon in a really fun unicorn cup 2. Wines: wine director is great - he's very approachable and personable, and based on his very specifically curated list, our tastes are very aligned 3. Special menus: the dedicated vegetarian menu is unique in vail, and they have a great kids' menu, including a hot deal ice cream 4. Food: highlights the night we went included the ricotta gnocchi, Icelandic cod, and lump blue crab bucatini 5. Dessert: sticky toffee pudding was on point, and the igloo was fun for the kids 6. Service: attentive, not intrusive, and I appreciate the manager coming by personally to check in There's a reason why after all these years, it's still so hard to get a table here. Jason, our server, was fantastic--friendly, knowledgeable, and his recommendations were spot-on. Very popular place and very hard to get a reservation. So we bit the bullet and took a 9:30 reservation after a full day of skiing. One of the few restaurants in Vail where you have to make a down payment of $25 per person to hold your reservation (some others will charge you if you don't show up). We arrived a little early for our reservation and was seated relatively quickly. Enjoyed the Cesar salad and the pork chop. Nicely presented and the chop well cooked and tasty. My only criticism is that I was supposed to have the down payment credited against my bill and forgot to check. Later when paying my credit card bill, realized I was credited for the $50 paid up front. Disputed the bill with my credit card company and eventually found in my favor. I'll return in 2025 when we go back but will make our reservation earlier. read more

One of our favorite destinations in Vail. This visit was just a little bit off the mark for the price point. Food was lovely but service was only 4 stars. The fois gras was a disappointment. Instead of rich, intense flavor, it was a light gelatin version. I had the halibut. Portion was medium - not as big as I would have liked but not terrible. The bill, however, was big. So we just patiently waited.. took us back to our table, which is very nice with the back of the restaurant. We ordered the beef tenderloin. And the Dungeness pasta dish. The tenderloin was OK. The Dungeness tasted like seawater we sent it back. The mac & cheese might've been the best I've ever had. The dessert chocolate pinecone was good as well. Amazing meal tonight at Sweet Basils. Our waitress Laura was phenomenal. I asked if the app I ordered (ricotta gnocchi) was vegetarian. She could've just said yes but instead she said "hold on let me get you the vegetarian menu". There was a specific mushroom and potato entree she recommended that was incredible. I had asked earlier for a side of crushed ted pepper because I like everything spicy. So she asked the kitchen to bring some sliced peppers- similar to jalapenos- on the side. Just for my appreciation for the chef's creativity towards the dishes alone, I would give it a 5-star rating because it's an art form that satisfies my soul and tummy. The most memorable dish, of course, is the "whipped feta"! So eye-catching, fun and tasty! It's also a very loaded dish with a lot of details from the dome like blown up bread (cracker) with some sea salts on top, the feta cheese hid underneath, plus the honey and sour hibuscus powder. OH MY..... I experience overwhelming happiness and thankfulness for every bite! Thank you Chef for creating this dish! I also like the red snapper dish a lot. The lemongrass coconut broth is so on point to accompany the perfectly pan-fried fish filet, but not overpowering, you know lemongrass could do that to a dish. In there, you can find traces of broccoli rabes and fresh/green sugar snap peas, lightly cooked so it's still green and "snappy". LOL....Genius idea! With its long outstanding history, the service is professional and courteous. I received a special treatment on the day because there was a service mishap that happened to me at its sister restaurant - Mountain Standard the night before. Visited in July and easily made a reservation about a week ahead. They take a deposit when you reserve on Tock, but refund it after you dine. I definitely recommend making a reservation, because it was packed!
