I want to give kudos for a very friendly, attentive staff. However, the cheese fondue dinner was a complete disappointment. The amount of fondue was absolutely paltry, especially given it was supposed to serve two people and cost $80. We had a nearly full basket of bread remaining after eating all the cheese. They also provided boiled potatoes and blanched vegetables to dip in the cheese along with dried fruit but that only made the meager cheese situation worse. It was more appetizer sized and even the fondue itself was bland and lackluster with no flavors of kirsch, wine, or other seasonings. We had to go somewhere else to actually get dinner. I appreciate the waiter discounting our meal to try and make up for it. The portions of the other entrees looked good so maybe go here for those and skip the fondue. read more

This quaint restaurant felt like you were right in the Alps even down to the servers uniforms. I had the Alm Pasta Sudtirol (pesto pasta) as my entree. It was tasty, but I had a bit of buyer's remorse when I saw the other's dishes. I had a bite of the Schweinshaxe (pork shank) and Resi's Schnitzel which were both delicious. Some of the table was still hungry after our entrees, so we ordered some Bratwurst Bites and Pretzel to top off the meal. To finish, we had the chocolate fondue. A really lovely experience in Vail. The Austrian ambiance is over the top on just the right way, and it fits in with Vail's faux-Alp atmosphere quite well. The food was also delicious. I tried the porcini mushroom soup with truffle dumplings and all of it was delicious and savory and warm, and even served with a delightful carnation on the side! For the main course I tried the pork shank (Schweinsaxon?) and the meat was fall off the bone good. The mashed potatoes were tasty but the sauerkraut was truly phenomenal. It's not a bargain meal, but it's not nearly as expensive as it could be, being tucked into Vail and visited by a very wealthy cadre of visitors. The service was also great. I commented on one of the waitstaff's steampunk goggles and he asked if I wanted to try them on for a photo op. I declined, but laughed at the invitation. All our questions were answered with politeness and ease, and I was quickly taken care of when I asked to buy a slice of cake on the way out. Almresi is a fantastic option for a wonderful dinning experience in Vail. A reservation is REQUIRED. The restaurant is very small and people sit for a very long time, so if you don't have a reservation, I doubt you'll get in. The restaurant is gorgeous with a swiss chalet theme. The host stand area is a bit crowded but they they have an area to leave your coats which I think is essential in Vail. The fondue was incredible! We started with some drinks and wine, then had the truffle cheese fondue appetizer, which was fantastic. Each of us then did the full fondue experience. Just WOW. There was so much food, there was more than enough to go around. I honestly think we could have done 2 portions and shared it between the three of us it was so much. The fondue setup was incredible though, a three layer warmer one at the top with broth, a hot grill in the middle and a broiler at the bottom to melt cheese and the fixings in little dishes. It is sweltering hot inside. Lamps w Incandescent bulbs over the tables will have you sweating profusely half through your meal. We couldn't even finish our food we had to put it in boxes and leave. We made no requests. We just mentioned it was too hot ( b/c we thought they might want to know why we were leaving )The host and the manager were both rude. Using Open Table notifications, we were able to sneak in a reservation when another table presumably cancelled. We arrived on a Saturday night and were immediately sat for our reservation. My husband is from Germany and was so excited to hear German music playing, but not the over the top Bavarian polka kind... true German music. The atmosphere was great and felt very authentic. The food was just as good! We got the cheese fondue app, which was perfect for two people. And then I got a salad and hubs got a schnitzel. Everything was delicious! Prices were on par for the area, but the quality was there to match it! Our server, who I believe was named Danielle, was also fantastic! All in all, a great experience! Wow! That was a delicious dinner and crazy fast! The service is awesome and very attentive but not overly attentive. I had the pork shank and it was unbelievable! The jus that came with it, was drinkable! The meat on the bone was so tender that you would have been able to eat it with just a spoon. My wife had the Alm pasta and absolutely loved it! Her comments were "rich yet fresh". Parking, in the main lot and walk to the center for the restaurant which is located on the second floor when you enter the sliding door. Perfect German meal. My friends who lived in Germany kept saying it reminded them of Germany. The decor and service were excellent. I split the fondue with my wife and it was very good. Wow! Very impressed with the great service we received in this restaurant. We had no reservations but they were able to comfortably accommodate all 7 of us! The presentation of the food was stunning. We enjoyed the pretzel as an appetizer and we all got a different drink. Mine was the best one in my opinion...the traditional German mulled wine is set on fire in front if you and allowed to melt the sugar before dropping it inside! All entrees were in point. My wife and I visited this place after hiking in the mountains for a few days at Rocky Mountain. The service was excellent and the place is very cute. Clearly authentic! Down to the staff! I had the Wiener schnitzel and it was absolutely awesome. I would have liked a little bit more lemons , but it really was outstanding. It's not very big, especially compared to the stuff that I had in Austria. However, it was delicious and I think about it often! Ha ha ha. My wife had the fondue and I thought that she was going to eat the plate beneath it because she loved it so much. The strudel was good, and had an excellent sauce, but, me being American, I wanted a little bit of ice cream with it and they didn't have any. Regardless, it was excellent although not 100% fresh. If you have never tried an authentic German-Austrian dinner, I highly recommend you do so now! Almresi will get you in the spirit the moment you step foot into the restaurant. The restaurant is beautifully adorned with antlers, lots of wood, and plaid accents. The servers are dressed in traditional German clothing. The service is excellent; everyone here genuinely wants you to enjoy your stay. Begin your meal with a few schnapps, which are served in cute boot-shaped shot glasses. This will get you all warm and fuzzy for the food to come. I highly recommend the Schweitzer Rosti which is a Swiss potato pancake with homemade farmers cheese and smoke salmon. The ingredients of this appetizer paired perfectly leaving me wanting more. Spaetzels were interesting to try. Not my personal favorite; I rather much prefer American pasta. Love this place and will definitely return next time I head out for a ski week to Vail. Like many of the other reviewers pointed out, when you step into this place, it's like stepping into a German village--from the decor to the traditional German clothing the waitstaff wears. On the night of our visit, we had a rather large party, so we tried quite a few items on the menu. Most were hits with our dining party, and a few were just okay. Some of the best selections we tried included: the Charcuterie Platter, the Lumberjack steak, the Harvest Salad, and the Gnocchi (note that this item is quite small so you will likely want to order a salad or something to go with it). Items that were fairly good but didn't blow us away included the Pork Shank (the one served with mushrooms), the Fondue appetizer (it was fairly basic and super small), and the salmon (also kind of small and not well-seasoned). Other standouts during our visit included the shotski shots (several shots of jager placed in cool boot-shaped shot glasses and positioned on a cutting board) and the excellent service. I forget our server's name, but he was first-rate all around. We ordered dessert--the Austrian Kaiserschmarrn with cherry compote--which I remember being ok, but not mind blowing. What we really wanted to order was the Apple Strudel, but, unfortunately, they were out of the Strudel on the night we visited. read more

Let me start off by saying I looooove Vail. This town is in my blood; my Austrian dad used to live here in the 70's when he said it was only "shit kickers and funny talkers" (read cowboys and Europeans lol) what I love most is that it is easy to see the European influence all over the town. Visiting my grandparents in Vienna, and Stuttgart. Wonderful memories. The ambiance is very European; lots of wood, but there is a touch of cowboy thrown in. German music playing in the background and I am pretty sure the hostess was wearing a Dirndl. The food was great; a delicious pretzel to start. The Spätzle were sooo good with some melted butter, honestly some of the best I've had in a while. I will say I got the Foie Gras Bratwurst as it was the only sausage on the menu and I always have to get sausages if there is no Goulash on the menu; they were a bit rich for me; and the texture was a bit mushier than had it been pork/veal. But it is Vail after all so everything must be extra fancy. I think maybe putting another sausage option on the menu might be nice because I would not get those again. They were still good but definitely different than I was expecting. My sister was in heaven with her Schmorbraten and I tasted it and concur it was very good!!! We also got dessert and man the Kaiserschmarrn blew everyone away. It was almost like a deconstructed funnel cake but so much fluffier and better. The cherry compote on the side was amazing. The perfect balance or tart and sweet. Honestly I would Come back in a heartbeat and totally get the Schnitzel, or really anything on the menu. Borderline insulting that they present fondue without a heat source and served ours with old spongey "Almresi" bread. I don't care that it was only $15, it was awful. Main courses satiated but I don't think it's fair to praise *pork shank* as a "gigantic portion." That's just how big a pork shank is. Doubled down on entrees since that's what I do when I ski. For $62, I was pleased, especially with the Schweinshaxe which I think is actually supposed to be knuckle, meaning the shank is an elevated offering. Docking another star because they forced us to sit alongside each other so as to "distance" from the table behind us. No reason that you can't warn people about that at the time of booking. read more

The portions are huge. We messed around and didn't make reservations in time. I was hesitant to order takeout (we were staying in Breckinridge), but 1) my son loves German food and 2) the reviews looked nearly too good to be true. They're not. Almresi Vale is great. Between the four of us, we ordered the pretzel with obazda, the fondue, two pork shanks, a schnitzel and my schmorbraten (short ribs). For dessert we ordered lots of strudel and a kaisersmarrn. The hostess was a delight. Our wait was a few minutes longer than anticipated, and she tossed in four absolutely delightful macarons. Even with the hour-long drive back to Breck, the food was amazing. The schnitzel was easily the best I've had outside Germany. The pork shanks (they really should be called porn shanks) were tender and juicy. My short rib was tender and loaded with flavor. The red cabbage and kraut were excellent. I'm not a huge fan of spatzle, but theirs was better than the homemade spatzels I've had. I had a long ski day and walked in to grab a bite at the bar. This place is right by the fountains and surefoot. What a cute place. I got the short ribs and it was microwaved but still very delicious. The dish comes with red cabbage and spetzel. Short rib was tender. The short rib comes with a little container of aus jus, like the juice of the meat. I poured that over the spetzel, now fantastic. I love red cabbage but this one had way too much sugar. I would prefer just plain cooked red cabbage, so much healthier. Bar tender was friendly and service was good. They seem to kind of rush you but who doesn't in vail. Nothing says Bavarian wonderland more so than walking into Almresi in Vail, Colorado - the outfits The German menu. Cow fur wrapped light fixtures. The staff shouting to each other in German. Heck, you're already in a ski town...you might as well go full Bavaria! I had the Ski Water which is a pomegranate infused lemonade served in a jar. This was refreshing, though not my favorite flavor for a beverage. A few extra points for serving it in a jar. Almost everything is better in a jar. Of course the main reason I came here was for the fondue. If you've got fondue on your menu...expect a visit from me. The Käsefondue was a good fondue! The alcohol flavor (kirsch) really came through and made the dish. It's appetizer sized (even for one person) and I had to ask for more bread to dip. I'd love a larger version of this dish with other things to dip beyond the bread. It's a non-traditional cheese flavor (almost Gouda Smokey like instead of a Swiss/gruyere you'd typically get with this.) I also had a side-salad which can be hit or miss at restaurants... In this case it was a hit! It was very fresh and looked good for a basic salad. The base was greens (not iceberg) with tomatoes, croutons, radishes, and a raspberry vinaigrette served on the side. (other dressings available) They've got other options for vegetarians including a free baked German pretzel, a pasta dish and other entree sized salads. There are lots of drinks and dessert options as well. I enjoyed my experience at Almresi... It made me feel like I was on a different continent, and it was a great first meal in the mountains in Vail Colorado. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of food in Vail, and Almresi was my favorite meal of the trip! The service and ambiance were some of the best I've experienced for a non fine dining spot. From the decor, the menus, to the presentation of the food, everything was thoughtfully curated. The staff were dressed in traditional lederhosen and dirndl. A guest in front of us compared it to a German Medieval Times, though with legit food. The Germans at the table next to us conversed in German with a couple servers. They remarked a few times at how good the food was. We started with the recommended Käsefondue which had clear brandy and wine. The alcohol added a nice depth to the quality cheese. I warmed up with the Feuerzangenbowle, a traditional mulled wine cocktail served with a rum-soaked sugarloaf that's lit on fire. Fun to watch and sweet, but not too sweet. My Mountain Salad was literally the prettiest salad I've seen! The fresh ingredients were balanced, and the chicken add-on was actually seasoned and not terribly dry like most breast meat. The Schmorbraten was tender short rib with sides of red cabbage and spätzle - ah legit spätzle! It was like eating street tacos after having Taco Bell your whole life.The short ribs were juicy, and the sauce was heavenly with nice brightness. We were stuffed with the generous portions but had to try the traditional Apfelstrudel for dessert. The apple slices were distinct, no mushiness here. The vanilla sauce was light with a hint of sweetness. I could drink this stuff. Our server was so very cheerful and gladly explained anything unfamiliar on the menu.
