Went for Thanksgiving Dinner and was extremely disappointed. Service: our waitress only took our order and disappeared for the rest of the dinner. All the dishes were coming out late and different servers had to help us. Very unprofessional for no good reason (the restaurant was half empty). Fortunately, the bartender noticed the problem and helped us in the end, but the dinner was already ruined. Food: We ordered the house specialty and it was a very subpar bland meat (it was unseasoned chuck steak, FYI) that we had to cook ourselves (thank god they had salt and pepper on the menu) served with boiled whole potatoes and bread. Do not order as you will be disappointed. We also had gnocchi and they were very dry with almost no flavor. We mentioned our experience to the waitress (when she showed up at the end) and no action was taken. Coming into this restaurant is like taking a step into Germany/Austria! All the front staff are from this area in Europe which gives this place a very traditional, authentic feel. Our waitress Maria was awesome and very well-versed in all the items on the menu, esp the red cabbage! She mentioned the cabbage was possibly even better than what they have back in Austria. Almresi's cabbage was great! I was surprised at the slight sweetness in it, almost like a light dessert, awesome! We walked in on a busy night during spring break and the waiter was kind enough to try and make seating for us without a reservation. We had gotten a rude response from other restaurants so it was a pleasant surprise to receive great service during such a busy time. A cool place to dine especially if you want a new experience. Went here on a Saturday around 8pm and the place was full. Reservation is highly recommended for the weekend. All of the employees here are from Germany or Austria. This a European cuisine (German/Austria) and the place feels like it is set in Europe. We started out with the cheese fondue. It was good given it's hard not to enjoy hot cheese with bread. For main dishes we shared the grilled salmon and the alpen gnocchi. The alpen gnocchi was our favorite dish of the two. It was on the heavy side but it's only 5 pieces so it's not too much portion wise. The salmon was light and thought the cedar it was wrapped around took the fishy taste which was great but hoped they would spiced it up a little. Finally we finished off with the apple pie and vanilla sauce (apfelstrudel) l. It was good but nothing special, hoped for a sweeter taste. First things first - this is Vail so I'm going to ignore the obnoxious prices. Almresi wasn't overly high for Vail, but it's pricy if you don't know what you're getting into. The best thing about this place is the atmosphere. Literally feels like i'm in a different country. The decor seems really authentic and i'm pretty sure all of the staff is from Germany. It's definitely an experience that we very much enjoyed, especially because we did not have much exposure to this type of place in the past. The food is good, but it's nothing to write hone about. Definitely quality ingredients but It's kind of hard to "wow" with traditional German dishes. Great for after a long day but you can only do so much with braised meats and fondue. The salad was really underwhelming but that was a bad choice to begin with at a place like this. Drinks were great, albeit expensive. The spritz is very interesting and they have some decent wine. I didn't have any beer but they obviously have a few German varieties. Perfect! Almresi lives up to all the 5 star and positive reviews others have shared on Yelp. From the host to signing the check, the entire experience is end to end Michelin Star without one iota of pretentiousness. The entire Almresi team are so personable and fun to engage in conversation. We heard from the hotel concierge that not only are the decorations and recipes imported from Austria but so are the staff. Regardless, you are transported with the warm decor of animal hide pillows, wood furniture, hanging metal canteens and cow bells? to hints of modern coolness on the art work. All of this warm blanket ambience was the perfect backdrop to the top notch food. We started with the fondue where the cheese barely had time to conceal as it was so quickly devoured. We did opt for the brandy boot shot for the added experience which interesting came with a different sequence of events depending on who you asked -- first dip bread in brandy boot then the cheese fondue or alternatively dip bread in fondue, eat, and then sip brandy boot. Either way, too strong like grappa for my wife or I so we just enjoyed dipping into the heart shaped bowl filled with ooey deliciousness. Philip, our main waiter, was so helpful. He described the dishes with tasty precision and we ended up taking all of his recommendations starting with the Old Bavarian, Almresi's twist on the Old Fashion which was in the top 5 ever. For entree, we shared the pork shank. It was so good we took the leftover to put in the hotel fridge as it was simply too good to waste. For dessert, we once again listened to our sage Philip by partaking in the Apfstrudel, a warm apple pie/turnover with vanilla sauce. WOW!!! That's how to describe this place. We made 6pm reservations and were warned by the reservationist to "come hungry". We arrived and as we walked up the stairs to the restaurant we were transported to a German/Austrian alpine house. We were greeted warmly and were escorted to our table. Our server Tobias, whom was proud to tell us he has been here for one week took extremely diligent care of us. As for food and drinks the choices are limited, but in the best possible way!! We choose the meat and cheese platter for the two of us to start off with...what a mistake!! It was so big and so delicious that we forgot we ordered entrees!! The German ham and the farmers cheese were out of this world. I couldn't stop eating the pretzel and dipping it in the amazing mustard it was served with!! As far as the entrees we ordered the pork shank and the short ribs. Again out of the world. We were so full after the appetizer but we kept plowing through!! The short rib was served with red cabbage and speztle. Amazing. The pork shank was with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut.. we couldn't finish...but it made a great breakfast Ok so totally full. The table wasn't ready so we had to wait about 20min in a very tightly packed bar area. When we were sat the table was very small and cramped. Not a problem, the bar tender was pleasant and service was great. I had the pork knuckle. The pork fell right off the bone, it was so tender. Pleasantly this reminded me of the pork knuckles I devoured on a recent trip to Berlin. This was the best knuckle I've had in the US. The others with me also enjoyed their meals. One commented it was the best salad he ever had (the Happy Creek Trout Salad). I have to admit, I want to go back and get one. We made a 6 pm reservation for the four of us. The restaurant is located on a pedestrian only street, so we walked with our big stroller as we have 4 and 1 year olds. They were happy to store our stroller for us. The staff were dressed in Swiss outfits and all of them had German/Swiss accents! The decor was DIVINE. I wanted to move in and never leave. We decided to split the fondue and pretzel appetizer. Compliments of the kitchen we were also sent bread with the pork "butter" (lard mixed with something else), topped with fresh veggies. It was SO good. As we had so many appetizers, we decided to split an entree, we ordered the pork shank and it was one of the best meals of my life! It was so flavorful and tender. Five star cumulative rating is a rare find on Yelp. There are clearly very good reasons for it. I was lucky to pick up a reservation here last minute, I would strongly suggest making one in advance. Design (5 stars): regardless of coming here for a date or just a casual bite, the atmosphere is amazing. A feeling of being in a European wooden lodge, with servers dressed in traditional outfits and many being from Austria or Germany. The atmosphere creates a feeling of authenticity. Dinner (5 stars): the food really did not disappoint. I normally do not get salmon as it is heavily over served, but this salmon had the taste and texture from heaven. Melts in your mouth, delicious. This restaurant's entire façade and décor looks German and Austrian, which is not the typical cuisine I'm drawn to but my husband is, so we stepped in at a quiet hour nearing dinnertime. This was like an adventure: the weather was glorious, we sat outside in the balcony, our server (wearing authentic lederhosen) enhanced our visit 10 fold, since he was perfectly conversational without being intrusive, and we talked about everything from the restaurant's inception to the impact of legal weed. Don't be thinking this is all about sauerkraut and red cabbage because the menu is creative with enough American style to offer something for everyone. The bread with vegetable spread is addictive but I scraped a lot of the butter off; it's too much. I chose the Schweizer Rosti, which was delicious (smoked salmon) but the accompanying SWEET potato pancakes would have received rave reviews from me on their own. Yummy!!! All of their presentations are clever and beautiful. Dinner for thanksgiving was not what we were expecting given the high amount of positive ratings. Especially since we had a better experience when we came here for last years Christmas dinner. The service was externally lack luster, except for the bar tender who picked up the slack when our waitress disappeared for 30+ minutes. We had to stand up and order from the bartender and ask for help when we needed it. Frustrating when you are expecting a higher end dining experience. Somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Talked to the owner; "she expressed this fact 3x when speaking to her." Her and her staff definitely weren't on the same page as we were the second family in a row asking the same question regarding a sale they were promoting. Her quote "I am 100% my staff didnt say this." The owner was flustered and kept saying we as the customer were wrong and the German culture was hers so she was right (I have no clue why she said this since we never questioned her culture or anything close to it). You could tell that she had been through this question multiple times and had enough because her and her staff weren't on the same page. The Almresi Pasta was flavorful, fresh and beautifully presented. It's big enough to split. My date had the Lumber Jack Steak which was so tender he was able to cut it with a butter knife and the gratin potatoes were amazing. The best part was dessert we had the traditional KAISERSCHMARRN dessert with plum jam. It was a cross between a beignet and French toast bites. It's my go to dessert now. The second time I went was with a group of 11 for my birthday party. We had my favorite two food groups appetizers and dessert. To start we had (this description is taken directly from the menu) BROTZEITBRETT- Slices of ham, Bündnerfleisch, Prosciutto, salami sticks, selection of cheese, garden radish, grape and pretzel ALM PASTI Black Forest ham, Prosciutto, olives, feta, stuffed peppers, caprese sticks, fine herbs with crusty bread. These were big enough feed and fill all of us. I also has the Mountain Salad with homemade raspberry dressing it was to die for. To end the party we had two of each dessert Black Forrest cake, Apple Strudel, Cheese Cake and KAISERSCHMARRN. It's great for a date, party, and groups.
