Really great food in a beautiful hotel restaurant. We stayed at the Sonnenalp and had breakfast at Ludwig's included with our room. The breakfast buffet on the weekend was wonderful with a plethora of savory of sweet options. On our weekday morning, they didn't have the buffet but instead allotted us credits to order of the menu. The breakfast sandwich was a hefty portion. The avocado toast was filling and flavorful, and the arugula salad on the side was great. The fruit plate and Belgian waffles were fun shareables but nothing spectacular about them. We really enjoyed the fresh sunny dining room with windows for walls and ceiling. read more

Cutest Germany/Switzerland style brunch place. It was our first time visiting Vail and our friends from LA recommend this place to us. We went on Easter Day and were worried they wont let us in without reservation but they were very friendly and helpful. We got the breakfast buffet and it was not only worth every penny but also great experience for us. They had everything you would crave for breakfast and it was only 42 per person except the alcoholic drinks. Considering Vail as an expensive place this was our cheapest meal we had with very good quality and service. My fav was the german sausage which taste like the real ones in . First off, please make sure you make a reservation. This is a very popular breakfast place for both hotel guests and non-hotel guests. I made a mistake of missing that detail when we went. My husband and BIL didn't want to wait as they wanted to start snowboarding asap. I did however still we t because I had a spa appointment for 10:30am. I listed myself at 8:27am and got seated at 10:32am!!! The selection of food is really top notch. You would want to go when you have a big appetite for the buffet and willing to pay $57 per person. I took pictures of all food options so you can see what are available. They also serve fresh juices and coffee ofcourse. The ones that stood out to me were the smoked salmon, french toast, chocolate croissant, mexican omelette (I forgot the name), bacon and fresh fruits. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a great ambiance, excellent breakfast, really hungry or looking for a date place. 10/10!!! read more

Located right inside the Sonnenalp Vail hotel. Great views in terrace area! Waitress was friendly but took a long time in between to check on us. This has to be one of the cutest spots I have been for brunch and I mean it whole heartedly . Its an Old World-meets-mountain-modern décor: Bavarian-style carved-wood ceilings, paintings by Austrian and German artists, and sunlight flooding in from a glass atrium. The view from the sun room was gorgeous with the snowcapped trees and the food and service complimented the ambience This place is inside a restaurant so might take a little bit to find a good parking spot but we were fortunate that it was a Sunday and we were able to park out front an establishment that was closed . Diners are greeted with picture-perfect baked goods, fresh fruits, exotic-looking cheeses and meats, and rows of scrumptious pastries .There's even a whole honeycomb dripping fresh honey into a lovely porcelain dish. Yes, there's an à la carte menu, but the whole point of dining here is to graze from the sumptuous European-style buffet, a cornucopia of eggs, waffles, blintzes, sausages, cured meats, cheeses, berries, yogurts, breads, preserves, and pastries . Beverages are ordered as per your choice and might cost extra depending on what you ordered . There is a separate Egg counter where you can get the eggs made as per your preference. Service was excellent to say the least and our server took really good care of us without being over bearing . She just magically appeared every time someone wanted to order something. So the pricing is on the higher side and everything including juices etc are additional cost. They also added a service charge which I am not sure was for what however we all paid an additional gratuity individually on top of it. This is a top notch breakfast buffet. I tend to not have really high expectations for any buffet in general but I remember liking this one pre Covid (the paused it during peak of Covid and only did a La carte) so when we visited The Sonnenalp this past weekend and heard it was back on we decided to indulge...and indulge we did. The main thing that impressed me was definitely the quality of ingredients served. The bacon was amazing; I had four pieces (insert shocked face lol) omelettes, eggs, breads, fruit...everything was great. I was a bad pregnant lady and also had some charcuterie for breakfast but I felt like If there was anywhere I could trust the cured meats it was Sonnenalp and it was so good. The fruit was great; pretty much everything was lovely. It also includes freshly squeezed juices, teas, and coffee. It's a bit pricey but totally worth the splurge if you ask me. read more

The restaurant is beautiful with different "rooms" including a solarium with lots of windows to overlook the mountains. The service was great and beautifully adorned in traditional swiss dress. We went for breakfast since our room at the Sonnenalp included the buffet. They had a very nice selection all looking fresh. Unfortunately, my eggs were cold and so was my coffee. Stayed at Sonnenalp Hotel and Ludwig's is located inside! The breakfast buffet here was included with our hotel stay (about ~$50 for the buffet), so thought it was a great deal!! Included are all the coffees, teas, juices -- the only exclusions were freshly squeezed juices and alcoholic drinks. Otherwise the buffet had a lot of variety including a station for omelettes/ eggs made however you'd like. Would definitely recommend especially if you are staying at the hotel!! Even if you are not I'd say it's worth a try!! At night the lounge area of the restaurant has live music and is a cute chill area to hangout and grab a drink especially by the fireplace! read more

Back again after 2.5 years. We were again not impressed. Went back because we wanted a quieter place with no TV's blaring, got that, but service was non enthusiastic, mundane and food wasn't what you'd expect for the money. I had Fish and Chips and it was blah with panko bread crumbs, which I was aware of, but it was nothing to rave about, a bit overcooked. It would be much better if the coating was flakey and crunchy, like a light beer batter dip. Chips (fries), nothing at all good about them. My wife had pumpkin stuffed ravioli and it too was ordinary. The potato, bacon, ham and corn chowder stole the night, it was excellent. My whiskey sour was poor at best and the wine too is overpriced. I don't mind paying higher prices but it must be worth it, ..it was not. Yes, overpriced, not exclusive and therefore, it just didn't cut it. I am just being honest, and sadly, we won't be back. I hope they get it together soon. read more

Breakfast. Things to eat that almost look too good to eat. Staff that refills coffee but other wise does not disturb that Sunday morning feel. Also, it's under a glass dome, so you're in a sunny, spot. I really think the other people there had a look on their faces like..."This is the best..." and I agree. What did I eat? What didn't I eat? My companion made me eat the funniest foods. One was clearly a miniature salmon mousse filled ice cream cone. There were three buffet displays plus the bread area. And so delicious it all was! Ludwig's is kind of a Bavarian tea room inside of the Sonnenalp which is itself a Vail institution, so the costumes of the staff match the whole Alp theme and so does the food. Such an amazing dinner experience! This quiet restaurant is tucked back in the Sonnenalp hotel. Started off with the jumbo crab cakes and Caesar salads, very fresh and plated beautifully. For mains, Dover sole (deboned tableside) and artic char. Both cooked perfectly, and the sauce puts them in a different caliber. Ludwig's has long been our go-to for breakfast in Vail. Unfortunately, starting with the pandemic, the quality of their ingredients has deteriorated. Their hot chocolate used to be world class, creamy, rich, served in huge mugs, but now is watery and thin and served in small mugs. The buffet is no longer the quality it used to be, and they no longer refresh it as often. We ordered off the menu this time and the food was pretty but did not taste good. Egg whites undercooked. We are very sad to lose this long time favorite. I should say that both the setting and the service are still world class! read more

Upscale restaurant in the SonnenAlp hotel. Wait staff was friendly and helpful. I started with the Amberjack and really enjoyed it. My friends said the scallops were good too. Moved on to the twice boiled chicken soup with tortellini, my friends had the bisque. It had been a super cold day on the slopes so the soup hit the spot. Then I had the Venison Duo, again cooked to perfection, and the reduction really worked with both the tenderloin and the sausage. One of my friends also enjoyed the wild boar ragout. Ambiance was upscale. There was several meters between tables. We dressed in slacks and a button down shirts and that was about the correct level. The only faults I could find were: 1) they neither asked if we wanted to check our coats, nor had a rack near the table, seemed odd in a ski town. 2) the cocktails were good, but not consistent. A MUST for breakfast if you come to Vail! They had such an awesome buffet for $35. I haven't had a brunch buffet that was this well priced anywhere else in the US. They have scrambled eggs, croissants, chocolate zucchini bread, waffles, Nutella, multiple types of cereal, strawberry cup, blackberry cup, raspberry cup, different types of local and European cheese and charcuterie. For how expensive this restaurant is, you would think both the food and the service would be outstanding. Don't get me wrong, the food was fantastic, but the service was absolutely horrible and I was extremely disappointed in it due to the price tag of the meal. They forgot to put our dinner meal in and we sat waiting for over an hour after ordering. Excellent food and service! I had no idea seafood served in the mountains of Colorado could be so amazing. I had the potato-crusted cod which was amazing. The fish laid on top of an amazingly-tasting, creamy bed of polenta (sorry, no photo. the dish looked extremely appetizing and I was hungry) Not only was the entree amazing, but the desserts were ridiculously delicious. The presentation of the desserts was beautiful and attentive (check out the photos). I ordered the pear pudding. Creamy, yummy goodness. Our table also received hand spun cotton candy and handmade truffles that melt in your mouth. Our service was also great. The staff was attentive and accommodating. Elk Carpaccio was as delicious as visually appealing. The use of edible foams, sponges, soils and gel-lees is novel, but ultimately falls flat when over used. Lovely, high-quality breakfast buffet. I usually am not much of a fan of either breakfast foods or buffet foods, but the ingredient quality here (as well as the European approach) won me over. Usually I eat only organic/local-type food, but I have eaten the brunch here quite a few times, on two different visits, and I have always enjoyed everything I have eaten from the buffet. That is an accomplishment for them! This is also a beautiful hotel and the dining rooms are no exception. Also nice staff and owners. Worth the price. Some of the highlights: - Cheese blintzes - always a favorite, and they were stuffed to the max. - Hash browns - just the perfect texture, and tasted super buttery. - Fruit - very decent selection of melon, berries, etc. Not sure how they got fruit this fresh at this time of year. - They had a smoked salmon plate they would bring to you as part of the buffet. They also offered eggs benedict and a couple other things that are normally not good in a buffet, but are perfect if they're served straight to you (still included in the meal, of course). I have to say, the Lodge's breakie buffet has been my Vail go-to for years (and it still holds a special place in my heart), but Ludwig's may now hold the reins for Best Brunch Buffet in Vail. While the selection is certainly not like a Four Seasons extravaganza, Ludwig's has all of the breakie staples that one would need -- though I can't imagine getting anywhere near a ski slope after gorging myself on their delectable treats -- a solid selection of fruit (berries, kiwi, grapefruit, bananas), cereals (hot and cold), waffles, French toast, cold meats, bacon, sausage, a benedict of some sort, some salt-laden hash browns, and perhaps one or two other things I'm forgetting -- oh, and there is a make-your-own-omelette man eagerly waiting to make your egg hopes and dreams come true. I think you can also order heuvos, other egg dishes, and a smoked salmon platter, if that strikes your fancy. At $25 a head, a meal that is actually more than worth the price you pay for it. The recent wedding I attended held it's rehearsal dinner here, and I was blown away. The service was amazing, and our server specifically came up to me and made sure I was a vegetarian...then brought out one of the most delicious meals of my life (ratatouille on top of a garlic/broccoli puree). The meal was perfect and a great addition to the wedding weekend. We had a cocktail hour in the library section before being seated in the outdoors atrium that's made up of window panels. We got the beautiful ambiance of being outside without the stress of having to wonder if it would rain or not. All in all, it was a great night. read more
