The cheese fondue was not what we expected at all. I've had fondue several times in the past, but it was nothing like what I've had before. The one we ordered--supposedly the mildest option on the menu according to our server--was overwhelmingly pungent, and the sour note completely threw us off. The meat fondue was also underwhelming. The flame was too low, and the meat pieces were large and thick, so they took forever to cook, which made the whole experience feel slow and frustrating. Let's start with the ambiance: if you've ever wondered what it would be like to stare into bubbling hot oil while questioning life choices, congratulations--this is your place. At one point the oil literally splattered into my eye. Nothing like being physically assaulted by your dinner to really set the mood. But wait... it gets better. Somewhere between dodging flying grease and trying to figure out whether I was supposed to cook my food or sacrifice it to the fondue gods, we discovered a $50 cakeage fee... ...on a cake we ordered THROUGH the restaurant. I cannot overstate how ridiculous that is. It's like buying a car and being charged a "sitting fee" for using the seats. We think we eventually got the charge removed, but only after negotiations that felt like reenacting the end of World War II. Diplomats probably reached peace treaties faster than we got our check corrected. So if you're looking for an adrenaline-filled dining adventure featuring potential eye injuries, baffling fees, and negotiations worthy of a military strategist... Swiss Chalet is absolutely for you. TLDR - this place was the highlight of a pretty miserable day. My girlfriend and I drove out to Colorado Springs this summer to attend a friend's wedding. We were working our way back towards the Bay Area when our rental car suddenly started having some system malfunction issues. For better or worse, this landed us in the beautiful town of Vail Colorado. After finding out we wouldn't be able to get a replacement car until the next day, we found some lodging for the night and came across the Swiss Chalet as an option for dinner (it came as a recommendation from a friend who grew up in Vail) We arrived around 6:30 PM on a Sunday night - the restaurant was fairly empty so we were able to be seated easily. Our server Sigi was phenomenal - she gave us a thorough overview of the menu , some recommendations for food and drinks , and let us try some potential options for wines we were interested in. For our meal, my girlfriend and I shared a Garlic and herb Cheese Fondue to which we added apples + pears and the 4oz Steak Medallion. We also started our experience with a cocktail and ordered a bottle of wine to enjoy with our meal (both of which were recommended by Sigi) Food arrived promptly and we were able to dig in. Everything was fantastic. I don't know if this is copium talking but this was one of the best fondue experiences I've had - the perfect way to heal and ground myself after some bad circumstances. The vegetables that came with the fondue were seasoned perfectly, the steak medallion was tender and well seasoned, and the wine was delicious. To top off our meal, we opted out of dessert but Sigi proceed to bring out some chocolate dipped strawberries for us to enjoy (they were fantastic) All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience at the Swiss Chalet. When we do find ourselves back out in Vail (hopefully under better circumstances) I'd definitely love to stop in here again. read more

Over priced, under delivered. I thought the staff was friendly and lively but the fondue left something to be desired. You can add on extras like sausage etc for a fairly steep price to only get a couple pieces worth. I don't think it was worth the price in any capacity. My sister and I went for the cheese fondue after a day of skiing. It is pricey for the amount of food you get and doesn't come with protein. The smell upon entering the restaurant is like a wet dog, but is probably the pungency of the cheese. Definitely a social place, as it was very loud. The aesthetic is charming. Apple streusel was good. Our waiter seemed to be more attentive to larger groups and didn't seem as attentive to us as a pair of guests who weren't drinking alcohol and were splitting fondue and a dessert. read more

Sigi was an amazing waitress and the atmosphere, food and drinks made for a great meal. You start with baskets of baked pretzels with black salt topped butter. Yum. I tried a medium Weiss beer and it was fantastic. You can get a smaller size or the larger stein depending on how thirsty you are. Swiss Chalet also has many good cocktails. The food is definitely shareable. The Haus salad has butter lettuce with a sour cream dressing. The beet salad is full of red and golden beets along with frisée, pea tendrils and a great dressing. The onion soup has melted cheese on crouton and a broth you savor till the last bite. The fondue is wonderful and there are many options for cheese and meat. We did the suggested Alper fondue and added a sausage sampler and Wiener schnitzel to cut up and dip in the cheese. You do get pieces of bread to dip in your fondue as well as a plate of roasted potatoes and vegetables. It was great for kids too as many of the other tables had families (we went earlier at 5:30pm) A great experience in Vail Village that is worth a dinner during your stay. read more

I felt like I was in the Swiss Alps with Disney-esque theming that was almost a bit over the top. You get a nice whiff of cheese as you walk into the restaurant. It felt cozy, comforting, and warm. Our waitress was very nice, patient, and timely. Weinberg Schnecken: Probably the best tasting dish, they were warm and flavorful with herbs and butter. Zwiebelsuppe: The onion soup tasted like you'd expect, very typical. Raclette Fondue: Maybe it's just me, but was very mid. Been to another fondue place and had similar thoughts, so maybe I'm not a big fondue guy. The veggies to dip were the best dipping side, but there was very little given. I have been eating at Swiss Chalet for 14+ years and wow how it's changed!! My family or 3 had dinner here this weekend and ordered the classic cheese fondue for 3 ($78 for 2 + $38 for each additional person). Included in the price was bread and vegetables which used to be ample. When we received the food I assumed the server forgot the vegetables for all 3 of us - we got 3 small new potatoes (1 per person), a small piece of broccoli, a small new carrot and 2 twigs of broccoli rape. It looked like a quantity that we each should have received, not to share! Are we really supposed to cut 1 piece of broccoli in thirds?? When I asked the server, she said this was correct. I suggested that for $116 we only got 1 new potato a person?? Totally not worth the price - such a shame, we used to love it here! read more

We had a really wonderful experience here! The restaurant is located in a beautifully decorated spot in Vail Village. Lots of Swiss décor everywhere including cow bells and traditional smoking pipes, which line the walls around the restaurant and bar. The tables are all spaced very comfortably and we reserved a perfect table in a nook facing the windows by stopping by the restaurant a few hours before they opened for dinner service. The manager was very friendly and took our reservation in person, even allowing us to select the exact table. We enjoyed a regional red wine which was very nice. We had the house salads as an appetizer course and then a bountiful pot of delicious cheese fondue for two. This fondue was exceptionally executed and on par with fondues I have had in Montreal and Quebec City. In addition to the bread and assorted veg dippers served with the fondue, our server provided a delicious multigrain bread as part of the bread basket, which we also enjoyed very much with the fondue. We even preferred this to the bread provided with the fondue. Service and food was great! My only minor criticism is that the music they played throughout our time there was this weird mix that sounded similar to what you'd hear riding a carousel or a merry-go-round. I can understand maybe they want to have some traditional music but this was a bit much. Maybe just some nice classical music or mellow jazz would better suit the mood of the place. First and foremost, make a reservation early! Especially if it's the weekend. We did this but saw several others trying to get seated without luck. The atmosphere is very German inside. It looks like a Christmas Oktoberfest. Even the service staff are dressed up. The prices were on-par with other Vail Village restaurants (ie. not cheap) but the food was pretty good. We went for the fondue with a few extra of the add-ons (like pears and proteins, which cost extra). Was it the best fondue we've had? Probably not. But it was still good. Portions seemed very small but it really did fill us, so I guess there's a reason they're small with all that cheese. Overall, go for the atmosphere, expect it to cost something, and don't expect the best food you've ever had. Would we go back? Always love coming here when I'm in vail. It's a must!! The cheese regular fondue is outstanding. Must get the apples and pears for sides. I would get a few rounds of it if you have multiple people. We had 6 people and I think got 5 or 6 orders but, 3 of those people were men who were hungry. Also, pro tip - get a side of steak or chicken as a little boost of protein. Allow me a moment to sing my praises, and say danke, to Suzanne and her tiim (team in Swiss German... according to Google because, well, I don't speak a lick of German or Swiss) Our daughter started dinner off by singing to the restaurant. We took turns taking her outside to let her greet the world and let other patrons dine in peace. Suzanne made sure the food didn't arrive or leave until we were ready for it, allowing us to enjoy a fresh, hot, and plentiful meal! We savored the venison, lamb chops, apples and paired with the raclette fondue. I've never had venison before and was pleasantly surprised to find it wasn't gamey, rather it was very moist, tender, and savory. Needless to say the lamb was scrumptious and the fruit was sweet and fresh. We finished off the meal with a swirled chocolate fondue, dark chocolate with light and hazelnut! Our waitress was not very attentive and never came back to ask if we wanted drink refills or really to check how our food was. We ordered the meat and cheese fondue options for 4 people and although the food was ok, it wasn't nearly as amazing as expected. The vegetables take forever to cook in the broth (we really never did get a fully cooked potato! Maybe they should pre boil them a bit before bringing out?) The amount of meat you get is small and nothing special. The cheese tasted good but only came with a fairly small portion of bread. But my wiener schnitzel order was extremely disappointing. First, the entree was "Wiener schnitzel with warm German potato salad". My plate had no more than a tablespoon of potato salad. It was good, the two forkfuls I had. But a ridiculously small serving. And the breaded pork was chewy and absolutely tasteless. While it came with a lingonberry jam (not a sauce) on the side, this dish needed some moisture like a butter or wine sauce. I ate one of two cutlets, couldn't chew my way through the second. I came in hungry and left the same way Final note. This restaurant, being Swiss themed, markets their fondue. But the only fondue available starts at $70 for two.
