A week-long getaway to Vail Valley during shoulder season proved delightful, and Fattoria, which we visited TWICE, was the highlight. When we stepped in, the manager, looking a bit like The Dude in shorts and flip-flops, admonished us: "You walk in with a party of eight without a reservation and you expect to just get a table?" There was a pause. "Of course you get a table. It's mud season. We're so thrilled to have you!" The food, especially the lobster ravioli, polenta appetizer, and the Italian beef sandwich (that last one at happy hour) was fab, and the servers were all funny and personable. Our server was extremely helpful in selecting our wines, and was super kind. We decided to split a charcuterie board and it was so worth it. Each cured meat and cheese paired perfectly with the jams, honey, and fruit. For my entree I got the rabbit tortellini (which is one of my all time favorite dishes) and it didn't disappoint! Another outstanding dinner! The moment we walked in the door Steve (an owner) greeted us warmly and seated us personally on a busy Saturday night. Our experience began with a blackberry margarita and a glass of Amorone. After some debate we decided upon the calamari to start. I requested and received some light aoli which along with the tomato based sauce (too delicious to be called simply marinara) were perfect compliments to the squid. This was followed by the rocket salad crowned with a dollop of sorbet which is amazing. This was the best dining experience I have had in a long time. Top 10 lifetime for sure. From the initial 'amuse bouche' a spoonful of pesto, peach and ricotta cheese. A taste of heaven. Then we enjoyed the melon antipasti with cantaloupe, prosciutto, honeycomb and raisin tapenade. Surprising and delicious. Then, on to brazino, an European sea bass that was perfection and a pollo cacciatore in a crockpot with meat just falling off the bone in a delicate tomato broth. I asked for additional bread to soak it up. Tied up the meal with 3 flavors of local gelato. We were delighted and mostly silent as we slurped up our servings. He came by a few times to check on us and shared the story of their business. The restaurant had a casual feel but the food was far from casual. The drinks were bright and refreshing. We started with the octopus and the carpaccio...and the gin drink. Absolutely wonderful. The octopus was super soft and the carpaccio was tasty with a light, horseradish, cream sauce, and arugula on top. Wonderful. For dinner we had the lobster ravioli, the pesto pasta, and a Sauvignon Blanc. And then finished it off with a wonderful tiramisu and a mint tea with honey. It was so good that I asked the owner to create reservations for every day for the rest of our stay. There was simply no need to go anywhere else. Lastly, it's not cheap, but let's be honest. It's not expensive either. Our dinner is around 260 (with tip) and super well worth it. Less than we spent at other places with food not as good. Craving Italian food we found this place on Yelp. Its high rating gave us high hopes unfortunately there was a misstep. Located in Avon near Beaver Creek. This is the perfect location for some upscale Italian food after a day of skiing. Interior is very nice and I believe they have outdoor seating in the warmer months. What we got: - Carpaccio - this was a star, big portion with a lot of arugula. You could consider this a salad. The caper dijonaisse was delicious and the pickled fennel added a nice vinegar hit. Perfect start before a heavy pasta dish. - Pappardelle Bolognese - this example of a bolognese was delicious. There is cream in the sauce that makes it heavy. - Beet Rigatoni - beet juice adds color but doesn't change the flavor. The sausage was delicious and so was the mushroom sauce. Tomatoes added a nice acid hit. Somehow this creamy and cheesy dish seemed lighter than the bolognese. *** while the flavors were 5 stars I have to knock a star due to the pasta being very overcooked. Unfortunately for both pasta dishes. The rigatoni was actually falling apart and mushy. The pappardelle wasn't as bad but still over cooked. I have to think this was an unusual mishap. Maybe the dishes sat under the heat lamps too long or the kitchen got distracted. The host was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Our server was nice but fast spoken and curt. At times we had to ask him to repeat. The server at the table next to us was much more descriptive. Our server simply described the amuse bouche as "vegetables" but we overheard it was eggplant. This review is long overdue. We have had dinner here many times - it is a must visit on every trip we make to Vail Valley. Fattoria isn't the most cozy venue but we overlook a rather bland decor for the superb food and drink. We always begin with Antipasti and Fattoria has an exceptional range of offerings that will delight. In particular, we recommend the carpaccio, calamari, and especially the pulpo which is one of the best octopus dishes we have found this side of Firenze. Their pasta is, of course, house made and is always perfectly al dente. One of us almost always orders the bolognese which is a delightful blend of veal, pork, and beef. They have a bold selection of Secondi Piatti and we highly recommend the branzino, cacciucco, and the porko buco. Hidden 'Employee Living fee' of 3% on the bill - a guilt fee that none of the other high-end restaurants we visited had. Your experience may vary. I do not have the desire to revisit this establishment again. In length: When you go to a high-end restaurant, you expect to walk out of there remembering the amazing tastes you experienced, the presentation of the cuisine, and the wonderful service you received - to wrap the whole encounter. We do go to high end restaurants and the above has been a consistent 98% of the time. However, our party experienced none of the above. The restaurant's atmosphere and ambience were great! But that was about the only highlight. The food was ok but nothing special. The service was ok but not personable. The part that offended the members of our party was the hidden 'Employee Living fee' of 3% -- in addition to the expected tip. One member in our party was an owner of a very successful restaurant in Lake Tahoe, California (another expensive resort town). His restaurant had NEVER passed on such hidden fees to customers. He felt that this 'fee' should have been prominently displayed either at the door or on top of the menu - so there were no surprises to the customer at the end. I asked a couple of different AI Services that I use about this matter. They too concurred that the owner should have clearly posted this either on the door or on the menu. We know that Vail is an expensive place to live in - just as Lake Tahoe is. The host did offer to take the fee off the bill but it made everything feel very uncomfortable and 'sketchy'. So, my advice to the proprietor of this restaurant is to simply post it at the entrance or on the front page of the menu. read more

The calamari is crispy, although the peppers are a bit random addition, the marinara sauce is excellent. Very crunchy and non-soggy calamari dish. Was searching for a nice, local place to celebrate our anniversary dinner. I read thru all the reviews and decided on Fattoria. Vast majority of their reviews spoke highly of the food - and those reviews were spot on! The food was excellent. Fresh, flavorful, home made. The Cesar salad wedge dressing was very very good with just a slight hint of anchovy taste and not over garlicky. The pappardelle pasta was comforting in its rich slow-cooked meat sauce. The standout item ended up being the mussels appetizer. A very generous portion in a white wine citrus fennel broth. In addition to the mussels, there was sausage and giant white beans. Served with bread, it was a hearty meal in itself. A good appetizer for sharing. I especially enjoyed the clementine cake dessert served with ice cream. I found it a nice way to end a very pleasant meal. Many reviews that I read were critical of the service. I could not disagree more. The host, Eli, took my phone reservation the prior day and was there when we arrived. He was most courteous and welcoming. Our server was knowledgeable of the menu and helped us make our selection. He was patient and we never felt rushed. The restaurant filled up and he handled all the tables efficiently and attentively. The restaurant has attractive decor and nice ambiance.
