We really enjoyed our dinner at Cafe Bernard this evening! This is a lovely place with nice soft music in the background, dimmed lights and efficient service. Very friendly and family oriented atmosphere! My husband had the lamb chops with veggies and fries. The chops were delicious! I ordered the French onion soup and the Nicoise Salad with tuna. The tuna was perfectly cooked and the salad dressing was light and tangy. Perfect for my taste! We shared the "Bomba" ice cream for dessert and the dark chocolate ice cream was wonderful. Enjoyed brunch on Sunday during the market. The omelets are perfect and the value in the valley is not comparable. Beautifully prepared and plated quality food. This place should be SO busy. The server was pleasant, kind and gave great info about menu and baked goods. We ate inside for a little bit of air con, but the outside patio is cute. Worst French onion soup ever! Although the only thing that resembled French onion soup were the onions. And they were crunchy. I totally undercooked and the broth was insanely sweet. No herbs, no flavor just sugary pork wine, and al dente onions. When I gave feedback, they were nice, but did not understand how basic French onion soup is made. Everyone can have a different take on the recipe, but the onions need to at least be cooked and also caramelized. For $17, I couldn't even finish it. It was so sweet.. It's a shame. This used to be a really cool local place, but it's run by chefs and people that don't quite know American cuisine and don't seem to want feedback so... eat at your own risk read more

WORST Eggs Benedict I've ever had... Asked for my eggs to be over medium and they were runny, hollandaise sauce was so tangy it wasn't edible! Took about 3 bites and sent it back.... the owners wife (our waitress) proceeded to still charge us!!! Never again will I go back.... DON'T WAIST YOUR MONEY DINING AT THIS RESTAURANT! Very small/cute European style cafe downtown Basalt. The service was pretty slow since they only had 2 servers for the whole dining room and they weren't in a rush, which is very European. We found it funny that they had signs all over tell you to not use your cell phone, which might be a European thing as well. I ordered the Breakfast Burrito and a side of bacon. It was fantastic and the perfect portion for the price. I loved that the burrito wasn't insanely messy and falling apart which made it very easy to eat with a knife and fork. Their pastries looked great in the case as well but the room is so cramped that people looking at the pastries were basically bumping into me in my seat. Overall, great little cafe on the main road through Basalt. We will definitely be back. read more

The food here was very hit and miss. The ratatouille and the seafood linguine dish were great. However, the curry with scallop was disgustingly salty. Like every bite you would take you don't know if you're going to get a bite of seawater or not. Similarly, the cacio e pepe was literally butter noodles. There was no flavor and it was like unsalted butter and a bit of pepper. We tried to send the butter noodles back but the server said the best they could do was do 50% off on the noodles even though we had a few fork fulls of it. We decided to not make a scene and accepted it. Not only that but we actually waited over an hour to get our entrees. We were here from 6:30 and didn't get the food until close to 8 despite only 2 tables being here in front of us. Extremely disappointed by this experience. Not sure how this place has a high review but it definitely shouldn't be 4 -- in my opinion this place should be at most 2 stars. Beware all future customers - this place is has really inconsistent food. EDIT - Some random white guy in his 50s came up to us as we were leaving and got up in our face and said "so you're going to leave a 1 star review because the food was bad?". We actually were outside and this random guy confronted us. He was very angry and said a few things and told us to stay at Carbondale next time (???) Not sure who this person was but that was very awkward and uncomfortable for a middle aged man to start a confrontation with us AFTER WE LEFT THE RESTAURANT WHILE WE WERE ON THE SIDEWALK. A nice cozy place for breakfast! We were staying in a hotel literally doors down, during a weekday, and were able to walk right in and sit down (even with limited seating and social distancing.) The waitress appeared to be the only one working, other than a cook obviously hiding in the back, but she handled things smoothly. I noticed her making fancy coffees, mimosas, assisting all the tables inside and outside, and take out customers. I had never seen sugar crystals that were colored and that part pretty much amazed me. We tried the fresh toast and it was delightful! read more

We chose this small restaurant for breakfast on a Sunday morning and discovered a longish wait for a table. After being seated, we then encountered another wait for menus to be delivered. My wife ordered coffee, but I had to go to the counter for another cup because the cream was curdled. We each ordered an omelet, Florentine for my wife and the Gardener for me along with sides of potatoes. The omelets were nothing special and certainly not worth the investment in vacation time. While the food was solid. And, while they do warn you with a sign on the door that says "this is not fast food", there was a huge gap between the appetizers and the entrees. We had a family dinner there for our 50th anniversary and had young kids. Would not have chosen the place, if we had known that. Also, our kids cleared, in advance, that we they would be bringing a cake for dessert, but were not told that there would be an up-charge, until after the dinner. Yes one of our favorite places in basalt!! Always great. Tonight we started with an endive salad and the basil Cesar salad. Both were delicious. A macaroni and cheese with peas no bacon rocked! A salmon almandine left the plate clean!! No trout tonight but they did a great job replacing salmon for the trout. And a fillet mignon was great. Oh yea the mushroom ravioli in a white wine sauce was so delicious. And our kids always live the chocolate fondue! Such a hit. This restaurant was always marked by Bernard and his wife's personal touch, as they interacted closely with guests and ensured you felt their caring nature. This continues to be our favorite local restaurant. The new owner has taken Bernard's menu and made wonderful enhancements. The pomme frites are better than ever. New item that shines is the chicken scallopini picatta. Other favorites are the best mussels ever, lamb shank, osso bucco, liver and the shrimp dish which is a little spicy. Appetizers that are wonderful include two differentt preparations for calamari, beet salad, onion soup. You can't go wrong on this menu. No disappointments so far and we go there a lot. Nice outdoor space. Inside is small. Service is a Covid problem since they can't seem to find help; common to lots of local places. read more

We were one of three tables on a Friday night. Service was polite and attentive. Music was modern not French. I was disappointed with the food. The rolls were warm but lacked salt. I had the tuna tartare with a ginger soy dressing and toast points. It was cubes of tuna over cubes of slightly unripe avocado but it was not dressed. I asked the server and she said that the chef dresses it very lightly. There was no dressing at all so she brought me a side of the soy dressing which helped impart some flavor and salt. The Caesar salad was generous enough to share. My friend had the liver but she said it was over cooked/tough with some gristle and struggled with the blanched green beans. I don't mind green beans more on the crisp/salad side but also no salt. It wasn't the chef's best night. Sad because I was looking forward to trying a French cafe in Basalt and it is not worth returning. Relatively reasonable in price with the total dinner including two glasses of wine coming in under $100 with tip. read more

The slowest service I've had in a while. I think we waited 10 minutes for someone to ask us what we'd like to drink and 15 more minutes to finally get it. And let's not even talk about how long it took for the food to come out. I couldn't understand why either because there was a server for the inside and another for the outside and only two or three tables for each. I love breakfast. In fact I love breakfast foods so much I'll eat them for dinner frequently. While perusing through Yelp I was excited to see the pictures and reviews of the food at Cafe Bernard. It was a Sunday morning and I was happy to be seated upon arrival. The waitress was super friendly and our little table, though small, was very clean and comfortable. She took our drink order and our coffee and chai came out promptly. I do want to note that my chai did taste quite a bit watered down by milk but I didn't mention anything to the waitress as I was so hungry. We noted that the menu offers a variety of choices and I decided to go with the Cowboy (extra cowboy in fact - egg-in-the-hole in multi-grain bread) while my companion went with the Smoked Trout Hash and a bagel with cream cheese. The Smoked Trout Hash looked awesome as did my Extra Cowboy. I was a bit disappointed that the potatoes that came with my meal lacked seasoning (hash browns/breakfast potatoes are my fave) and the bread though fresh was just ok. Temperature wise the food was good though overall quite bland (both dishes) which left us both disappointed as we had been so excited to try this restaurant. I do want to note that there was a multi color sugar shaker on the table that we were excited about though neither of us seemed to order anything it would go with (we ended up putting some on the bagel and cream cheese for fun). I gave this business 3 out of 5 stars as I thought the staff was really great, the drinks/food came out fairly quickly, and the location was accessible and convenient. Next time I am in the area however I will more than likely try a different breakfast spot. read more

I give it six starts for the quality of culinary experience, class, the excellent coffee (better flavor & body than any Starbucks), friendly wait staff, classy & vibrant deco, & great quality of food. Bestest waffle I've ever had. Soft, fluffy, well done. one bite and the flavor of butter milk & goodness exploded in ur mouth. Light on stomach; not greasy nor heavy. While we relaxed here, two aged cyclists walked in in their cycling apparels, sat down, & started reading newspapers. Nice. We had coffee, trout hash, farmer's wife & waffle. Bill ran up to $32. Not bad at all; dinning in place this classy, cute & beautiful can easily cost an arm & a leg in NYC. While we waited for fresh coffee to brew for refill, we can smell nice aroma from the kitchen... so mouthwatering!! FYI: no wifi. Signs all over the place with "no cellphone" means in-person conversation & quality time at the table. lunch served 11:30 -. There is wall outlets to charge ur electronics.
