Wow! We loved Mawas! It was so good we came back for lunch before our flight. It's within walking distance of the airport on the Aspen Business complex tucked away. There is a sweet deck attached for eating outside, which we took advantage of the first time we went. The restaurant interior is just as charming, very clean and modern aesthetic, offering a lovely place to eat. The menu is fresh and wholesome ingredients. We got the same things both times, the Thai noodle salad and the tomato soup - both to die for !! So good. The second time we went we also got a cappuccino, which we regret not getting the first time. The staff is welcoming and super nice, the service was extremely fast and each time we were very well taken care of. Pleasantly surprised to find such delicious food on my trip to Aspen. The owner, Mawa herself even came and told us her inspiring story! Love to know that the owner is very hands on with her business. She really brought flavor to Aspen and I loved her menu! I was so happy to see a Black woman-owned restaurant in Aspen and even happier when I tasted the food. I got the pineapple ginger juice to complement my chicken and waffles but the entire menu sounded delicious. There were some differences with the menu and what we saw on their IG (some things being off season or removed from the menu) but all in all our table was overall satisfied. My husband and I came for breakfast, and much like Aspen itself, everything was good but left me wanting just a little bit more. To start, most of the food wasn't very warm. The sashuka was only served with two pieces of bread, but really could have used more in proportion to the tomato sauce it was served with. The French toast had an excellent crunchy crust, but could have used more of the fresh fruit. The Benedict was my favorite part of the meal, but the hashbrowns were a little overcooked. Ok, so considering how delicious our last visit was, we decided to go to breakfast here again. Hubby and I show up at 10, bc yelp says it opens at 8am.Not open til 11. Ask if this is a Breakfast menu and the girl working, very very slow reaction time and very slow voice, kinda mumbles, yeah yeah of course. We are seated and that is it....wait......wait......finally I flag down a waiter and kinda smile. he says one sec. and 8 minutes go by. There were three of us and the other two were not very enthused by the meh menu staring at us. lso to be told 3 things were not avail. The restaurant was deserted too. We were the only ones there til we wanted to go. We decide to at least get a cocktail so as not to be rude. We order a White Russian, a coffee and a bloody mary. Must have been dude's first time behind the bar bc the white russian was some weird concoction with 4 difft liquors including baileys apple? It took another 10 minutes for our drinks to get to us, so I actually got up and approached the bar to bring them back to our table bc the server was sitting laughing with the girl hostess. Once we realized the drinks were ass. I asked for our check and the guy nods sure. I took my card and put it on the table. In the meantime a couple who is obviously well known sat down and had service by 2 otherwise unseen servers in like 5 minutes flat. 52.50 later....for 3 drinks, we bailed. We were kinda stared at by the staff bc we wanted to get out of there. I doubt we will return. The rudeness of the people working and the bartender who actually defended his white russian recipe, makes us think there are better places to spend a hundred bucks. read more

Breakfast and brunch are where Mawa's really shines (and I include her crepe shacks in that statement). While her dinner menu is good, it doesn't hold a candle to breakfast/brunch. Her pancakes are to die fo and the Benedicts with the latkes subbed for the English muffins are genius. I have her cookbook and use her banana bread recipe to make my kids muffins for their lunches and add some pumpkin seed protein powder to the recipe for extra oomph. read more

Came with 7 friends on our way to the airport after visiting Aspen for the weekend - they stored all of our luggage during brunch and then took us all to the airport - what?!? The food was incredible, I had the frittata and pineapple ginger juice, and we shared the most delicious crispy pancakes I've ever had. Everyone was super friendly and kind, especially as we were here early. The space is elevated and so lovely. Everything was thought out and executed beautifully. That goes for the food and drinks, too. Chai Tea Latte. This has got to be the best one I've ever had, and I loved the cute glass it was served in. Brioche French Toast. Gimme more, please. What made this dish especially tasty was the granola mix. It really made everything come together. Buttermilk Pancakes. You have to see this stack in person. These are the fluffiest pancakes ever and oh so good. That apricot jam was especially to die for. Cherrywood Smoked Bacon. Unfortunately, this was a flop and $8 for 3 strips. I was headed to catch a flight and had to stop by from what I hear is the only black owned restaurant in Aspen. So it was a must and it did not disappoint! Here are my thoughts: Environment Located not too far from the airport in what is considered to be like an airport business area its very accessible to folks coming in to town. Although it's not located in the dainty downtown area it has plenty of character. It's a beautiful restaurant with a lot of character. Plenty of dining space with a whole other section that includes a lounge section. They also have a full bar area. Service Very friendly from the moment that I entered the space. Very welcoming and accommodating and always approached with a smile. Really enjoyed the service and everyone made sure I had everything that I needed. Food and Drinks I had the pancakes and scrambled eggs w/ cheese and a mocha. Everything was delicious. The pancakes were fluffy and warm and the eggs were perfectly made. The mocha was just right and was comforting on a cold snowy day in Aspen. The pancakes are high on my list for my favorite. Overall If i ever find myself back in Aspen this will be the first place I go and the first place I recommend to anyone. I enjoyed myself and loved the food and the space. We ate their whole staying in Aspen. The restaurant is in an office park near the airport ; a bizarre location for a higher end restaurant . But we did sit outside on the lovely patio and the inside of the restaurant is pretty and funky. We had warm and efficient service and our food was beautiful and delicious. I can't believe this restaurant has been here for a while. I feel like in my ignorance that I missed out on several delicious meals. I think the location at the ABC is the only reason this place isn't mobbed. The parking is good, but you have to go to the entrance of the restaurant, this means going past the delivery entrance in the direction of town (E) and take the next left and then a left. You will see signs for restaurant parking. The DR is beautiful, and the service is excellent, but where this restaurant really shines is the food. Gluten-free eggs Benedict on a bed of crispy potato pancake, and salad that would make the French proud. Pancakes that are famous. Dinners are fantastic. Though the dinners are quite big, so you might want to consider asking for a to go container for part. This is a great restaurant for gluten-free food, and for people who like to eat delicious, well-seasoned food. Michelin knows what it was doing. read more

Also, it's pretty absurd that they would charge $85 per person for no-shows. I've never seen a charge this high, even for Michelin starred ones. We visited Mawa's for brunch our last morning in Aspen, as I'd read great reviews and none of the other breakfast places in town seemed worthwhile. The staff were all smiles, were extremely prompt with taking our order and getting us our coffee, and even entertained our 10 month old while visiting our table. The food did not disappoint. My Mom had the classic benedict, my husband had the chilaquiles, and I had the salmon benedict with a side of merguez sausage. Everything was phenomenal, the ingredients seemed fresh and high-quality, and the portions were fairly large. Anywhere else in Aspen would probably charge double for half the quality. We had the matcha lavender latte, buttermilk pancakes, and the Parisienne omelette. The latte was great and definitely had an authentic matcha flavor but the lavender was lacking. The buttermilk pancakes were so fluffy and delicious, the most delicious and fluffy pancakes were had in a long time. Adding berries was the right choice. The Parisienne omelette was super delicious and filling and the mushrooms were so good. Service was good and attentive. First - READ THE OTHER 1 STAR REVIEWS. You will see I am not alone. I am utterly disappointed and appalled by my recent experience with Mawa's Kitchen. I have come to the conclusion that it may even be a criminal operation - here is why: We initially made reservation for Saturday night for 8 people. We had to reschedule due to unforeseen circumstances. A staff member switched our reservation to six people on Sunday night. He even shared his name and confirmed it back to us. However, when a storm was coming in over the weekend and several people in our party had to leave town, we called to cancel our reservation. The person on the phone claimed the restaurant isn't open on Sunday for dinner! AND... they would be charging us $680 for our 8 person no show (even though they saw that I called and had notes of my reservation change!) They said oh, "our staff member must not have been trained and we will make note of that!" The employee was so incredibly rude and told me to go ahead and dispute on Amex as they have won multiple disputes before. A clear sign of poor customer service is now costing me $680 for a reservation that I could NOT even go to because they are NOT open for dinner on Sundays! My feeling is they do this often, to try to steal money from would be customers. Read the other reviews and you'll see. As someone who visits Aspen several times a year, I am deeply disappointed and would advise all to think twice before booking dinners, parties, OR catering with this company. Do not fall for this scheme. If the credit card company does not refund us, we will be reporting Mawa's to the local police and better business bureau. read more

After a long weekend of pricey burgers and pricey bland pasta in Aspen, we ended our trip with a dinner at Mawa's Kitchen, and came away with one of the best dining experiences we've had in some time. A truly exceptional evening of perfect service, inventive food and the all-world hospitality of Mawa herself. Her soul is in this restaurant and her food and it shows. We were seated promptly on a busy Saturday night and given a thorough walkthrough of the menu, which had a unique mix of French, African and Asian flavors. Our 9-year old son, who has a deep interest in food and is an adventurous eater, caught Mawa's attention and she offered to make him a special dinner off menu as a surprise. Our son agreed and was treated to one of the most wonderful beef bourguignon-chanterelle mushroom dishes we've ever had (Mawa instructed our son not to share but we had to steal a few bites!). Our son absolutely loved it, and both he and Mawa were so happy. We ordered a very unique beef shortrib ramen dish that had a gorgeous anise broth and pickled onions, and a perfectly cooked chicken yassa dish dressed with light greens. For starter we had a shared bread plate with a variety of butters and jams. Bread at altitude is always a roll of the dice, but these were baked to perfection. Highlight of dessert was a knockout Ile Flottante with a perfect creme anglaise custard, one of the best desserts we've ever had. Our son was given a complimentary cheesecake from Mawa and her staff, we were really blown away with the generosity and kindness they showed to our son and us. He was really flattered and upon leaving gave a big heartfelt hug to Mawa. It was like dining in a relative's home, if that relative was a Michelin-rated chef. One of our best dining experiences. Pricey but you can feel the value in the food, drinks and service. As one of the few Black-owned businesses in Aspen we're proud to support Mawa and her vision of food and sharing. Rotten lettuce, old fruit in my brothers cup, slow service, bad communication. My dad said James Beard is rolling in his grave.
