That's how I felt the moment I walked into this absolutely beautiful space--you are literally transported into a garden like environment in the alps, and the happiness and pure excitement of everyone who works there just flows onto you, making this probably one of the best dining experiences I have had in quite some time! We came here with a large group of around 12 people, and the table to seated us at, was surrounding by such unique pieces of art, and incredibly elaborate chandelier hanging overhead, and the charcuterie board we got alone, also was so intricate in how it was put together that we barely wanted to eat it since we didn't want to mess it up! The pretzels, the mustard, the meats, the cheeses...and then the main dishes were amazing too! The pork shank, the spatzle, the pork loin, the short ribs....everyone couldn't stop talking about how perfect everything was. The dishes all came out on time, they had a great wine and beer selection as a good austrian/german place should have, and really I just felt like I was in some magical forest and really didn't want to leave! If you find yourself in vail, all of the food is not cheap, it is a disneyland type of mountain town. Alright gang, let me just start off by saying: 1, best pretzel and mustard I've ever had. 2, best pork shank I've ever had and damn near the best meal I've ever put into my mouth. 3, better apple strudel I've ever had as well. This place though, Almersi, is next level sh*t. The atmosphere is beautiful and you know exactly the kind of food you're going to eat when you walk in, and it'll be amazing no matter what it is. Like I said I got the pork shank, and my family got the "eat the hat" special which is like an Austrian-Korean BBQ style experience if you can piece that together. I would also like to mention that this is all a family run establishment. They have a few stores in Germany but this is their first in the states and they've absolutely killed it. We visited this restaurant on their fifth day in business!! It seemed to be put together very well! We were promptly seated upon arrival. The restaurant looked and smelled brand new but we felt like we were part of a well orchestrated show: the staff was dressed in alpine inspired costumes (a lot of attention to detail), all well trained, very friendly and ... gregarious. Very nice atmosphere too, it felt warm and cozy after spending the day on the slopes! The decor looked beautiful. We found ourselves in an Alpine castle: wooden tables and chairs, chandeliers made of antlers, cute tablecloths and a truly alpine menu with the variety of meat choices, Rösti, fondu and pretzels with lard. On our day trip to Vail we knew we were in the mood for German food. There are a few options in the village but this was by far our favorite and we have tried the others on previous trips. The restaurant is adorable with a very rustic feel. We were seated quickly during lunchtime. Some of the seats are bench style some are regular chairs and others are armchairs. There are also a few seats at the bar. On first look of the menu I did notice that the wines were pretty expensive even just by the glass. My husband and father in law each had a beer and I had the Glühwein which was a cinnamon apple warm wine. We ordered the Käsefondue as an appetizer. We needed more bread to finish it which they happily offered to bring when we were running low. They offer a shit with it, a tradition of sorts, that is described as a cherry water, similar to a schnapps. It is $9 per shot, fair warning. I had the Bratwurst as my entree, served with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. It was so good and the potatoes were to die for! My husband had the Schweinelendchen which was the pork loin and it came with some of the best cabbage we've ever had! My father in law had the Schweizer Rösti which was delicious. The server gave him the run down on how to best prepare it for eating. The potato pancakes were nice and crispy and it was served with plenty of salmon and cheese. The women's restroom was clean. Both my husband and father in law complained of the stench in the men's restroom. After checking yelp and seeing all of the fantastic reviews of this place, my wife made us a reservation. The couple days before our reservation, we talked to locals about the restaurant and they all confirmed it would be a fantastic experience. I'll start with the only negative which we found: the signage doesn't draw your eye in if you aren't looking for it. We knew we'd be eating here but while walking around vail village, it wasn't obvious where the restaurant was until we google mapped it and eventually found it.. realizing we had walked past it a handful of times. When we arrived for our meal, the ambience really felt like we had arrived in Austria. Nice people, warm decorations and a medium level noise buzz. Our waiter's name was Julian and he was actually imported from Germany! Friendly, helpful and very courteous. He recommended a few items and we ended up getting the Brotzeitbrett and the Pork shank. German music as well, which we all enjoyed. The menu has great options including many very authentic specialties - the Austrians and Bavarians in our group were very pleased. The The Austrian red wine that we had was great. Everything on the brotzeitbrett was excellent. We also really enjoyed the pea soup, the schweinshaxe (pork shank) and the schmorbraten (braised short rib). Both of the meats were very tender. Consensus was that the fondue appetizer and the schnitzel entree were both good but not great, the other dishes definitely stood out more. (Although the bread that comes with the fondue was really nice. I still really enjoyed this dish and would order again - it was white wine forward, which personally I really like in a fondue.) We ordered the kaiserschmarrn and landhauskuchen for dessert and both were excellent, highly recommend. The drinks list was also extensive and included many regional options that aren't generally available other places. The Austrian red wine we tried was very good, and the Stiegl beers came in the classic ceramic mugs. The schnapps selection was also good and came in the cutest little glasses. We had many great meals in Vail in the 5 days we stayed, but the two we had at Almresi stood far above the others. The authenticity of the staff, the decor, the amazing service, and most of all the food were all excellent. On our first visit, I had the pork shank with mashed potatoes and the best sauerkraut I've ever had. For an appetizer, the pretzel with mustard and lard to dip was great too. When we went back the second time (2 nights later) I had the pork loin, paired with excellent red cabbage. We met the manager of this restaurant last year when she was working at Sonenalp to learn more about the Vail tourist industry, prior to the restaurant opening. Her parents run a couple of restaurants in Germany and then spent a good bit of time in the U.S. setting up this new restaurant (including putting a lot of effort into sourcing quality meats - much harder to find in the U.S.! - and other quality ingredients). Their son also works here (I think running the kitchen). The restaurant turned out to be really superb, so much that my husband brought a group of newspaper executives here for a case study presentation. The Yelp reviews were all so good that they were suspicious that they were not legitimate, but after some of them ate here, they all changed their minds and just went on raving about it during the discussion. So the whole conference is now planning to return here for dinner next year. I think the best thing to do when eating here is just to let the waiter or manager pick out what to eat. The food is all authentically German (and nothing that you will find at typical German restaurants in the U.S. - they purposely do not have wiener schnitzel, for instance). We tried lard spread on toast (surprisingly delicious!!!), a pizza-type dish, some noodle beef soup, some pork shank (remarkably tender and yummy!), pretzels, and a bit of a cold cheese/meat plate. I like German beer in general, but the glass of beer that I had here was unusually delicious. I would buy it and drink it at home routinely, except that they import it specifically for the restaurant (it is from their hometown) and so it is not available anywhere else in the U.S. I also had a glass of German wine that was very good. I am really picky about ingredient quality (generally eating only local/organic food) and everything was just wonderful. The homey atmosphere is charming, and the authentic German folk costumes are just as cute as can be without being at all kitsch. (They now have a gift shop because people kept wanting to buy up their inventory of glasses, plates, costumes, etc.) Attentive, professional, non-pretentious service. (They train at least some of the wait staff and kitchen staff in Germany, and I think it shows.) Apparently they have authentic German music for lunch on Saturday, which sounds really fun. Considering that this is Vail, and considering the quality of the food (as well as the overall charm), I think the prices are pretty reasonable. I'd eat here often if I lived in the area (plus they also have take-out available). I really wanted to go back again in early October, when we drove through Vail again, but they were closed for the off-season. That was very sad, though I'm sure they do deserve a break after their first year in business. I'm really looking forward to returning next year. read more

This place is, in a word, outstanding. It was definitely one of the best meals and one of the best experiences I've ever had. My partner and I came here for a fun, romantic date night while staying in the area last month. Every single person in the restaurant was nothing but the paradigm of restaurant professionalism. The hostess was friendly, our server was warm, and one of the chefs (a member of the family who owns the place) who brought the food out was extremely welcoming. The decor was so much fun; their motto, "where the Alps meet the Rockies," is truly embodied in this place. Everything felt very mountainous, including the tables, the decorations, the place settings, and the Alpine uniforms for all of the waitstaff. Our food and drinks were absolutely superb; my partner had the glüwein, and I had a glass of white wine. We were given an amuse-bouche of the Griebenschmaltz, which was a lovely way to start the meal. For our starter, we had a "tart" (sort of like a thin-crust pizza) with fig, feta, and arugula which is no longer on the menu. The balance of flavor was incredible, though it did come with a side salad on the wooden board it was served on, which I found a bit challenging to eat. For our main courses, my partner had the Lumberjack Steak, and I had the short ribs. Both were incredible; we didn't even need knives to cut our respective meats. The portions were generous, and it was definitely some of the best food i've ever eaten. For dessert, we took home the Kaiserschmarrn, which were similar to fluffy beignets with fruit compote. These would likely have been better (and warm) if we ate them in the restaurant, but they were still delicious when we got home. Overall, a fun, different experience for a date night or classy party. From the minute we walked in, the host and servers were welcoming and friendly. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful and colorful. Even the outfits the servers wear, which would be kitschy anywhere else, fit in perfectly here and complete the atmosphere. It is alpine and Colorado-y and refined at the same time. Every table is set a little differently, so your dining experience feels special. Now on to the food and drinks. I started with the glüwein over ice, which was sweet but subtle and refreshing. My girlfriend ordered the short ribs, and I ordered the lumberjack steak. To give you an idea of how much I appreciate a good steak, I gave up vegetarianism just so I could eat steak. The steak I got was the best I have ever had. I could literally cut it with my butter knife.
