Whaaaattt?? New American greatness and a cool post modern hipster atmosphere in a converted Dairy Queen? Don't let appearances deceive. Nova is a largely undiscovered treasure on the outskirts of Bishop Arts. Unique flavor combinations fill the menu. I wanted to try everything, but settled for the Roasted Garlic Hummus, the Brisket Burger, and my date ordered the Veggie Enchilada. All was delicious, though the burger was a little small. Service was attentive despite arriving during the dinner rush. Though the parking lot was full, no one we talked to in Bishop Arts seemed to have heard of Nova. I'll definitely be back. read more

I came here for brunch many months ago. I remember walking in with a reservation, but since the restaurant was half empty, we got to choose our table and we picked a booth in the corner. The restaurant is very casual and it reminds me of a classy diner even though it isn't a diner. The waitress was very nice and attentive. She kept water and mimosas coming through our time there. Speaking of mimosas, they were good and not diluted with too much juice. We decided to order two entrees to share. The Smoked Salmon Benedict was pleasing. The salmon had a nice smoky flavor and went well with the hollandaise. The Lobster Frittata was underwhelming. There was hardly any lobster and I wouldn't have known it was lobster if I hadn't looked for it because the taste of it was not there. The frittata was thin and hollow in texture. It wasn't fluffy with any type of good flavor. It was bleh. The roasted potatoes that came with each entree were delicious. There wasn't anything so great about the food that wanted me to visit again. I even forgot to write this review, so it wasn't too memorable. But, it wasn't bad either. I haven't been to Nova in quite some time and was happy to see it has still there. Nova definitely has a throwback style and feel, think late 60's. When you walk in you'll see wrap around bar on the far wall and diner style booths along the windows with a few tables here and there. The menu is as unique at the restaurant itself. It's fairly small and simply to read, but by no means making a decision is easy. The menu contains several small plates, fresh salads, pizza, and of course big plates. LOL! After looking through the menu I decided on the Chicken Fried Pork Loin, OMG! This was the first time of ever had Country Fried Pork Loin, which was sitting on a bed of Country Mashed Potatoes and covered in Jimmy's Sausage Gravy! I don't know who Jimmy is, but this was the best sausage gravy I've ever had, seriously! The Pork Loin was so tender and juicy, not moist! Juicy! The seasoning was spot on and that gravy, I can't get over it. LOL! The service was extremely friendly and gracious, our waitress came and checked the table often, but not so much that she was disrupting. Beyond our dinner, I noticed the warm and friendly nature of Nova. Several people seem to be regulars, just enjoying a meal and a few drink while watching the game on the TV at the bar. We couldn't hear the TV at all. Nova actually has a good mix of mood music playing in the background, but not too loud, so you could truly have a conversation. Hooray for upgrades!!!! I always like when I can give someplace a boost. We arrived late Saturday night to find the place bumpin (their kitchen is open till 11pm and bar till 2am...yahoooo!). We were sat on their lovely heated patio (which is also dog friendly). Whilst perusing the menu, I noticed the entree part was different than the last time we were here. I LOVE when restaurants do this, its like a reboot every few months or so. Our waitress was awesome! Awesome!! Totally cool and laid back. We ordered cocktails and she told us the specials. While our cocktails were being made, I decided on the fish special...which was a Grouper with a red pepper paste, roasted potatoes and a shrimp/corn hush puppy (what??). MP wanted their "breakfast" pizza, which is what I call it. Bacon, Eggs, Tomatoes and other yummies. Their menu is some of the most creative and intriguing items I've ever seen. And from what I've alredy tried here....they got it goin on. A little while later the Owner/GM comes out to explain the wait and that it had everything to do with the MP's pizza. He then said that their oven can only hold so many pizzas and that seemed to be the popular item of the night. I really appreciated the fact that they owned up to the delay. It wasn't like we had been waiting forever, but it was about the time our food probably should have been out. After all that was exhanged, we started chatting about the neighborhood and how awesome we are...I mean how late they served food, etc...etc. At the end of the convo, I wanted to hang out with him at the bar then walk home. I bet he has a strong pour. I digress.... When our food was delivered, the waitress goes..."ugh so jealous you're about to eat this. It's my favorite." Bam. I win. Went for dinner Tuesday, July 17, 2018. Waitstaff informed our group that menu changed effective tonight. THANK YOU for keeping the chicken fried pork tenderloin! It is still as delicious and generous as always. Don't mess with success.. Nova is not to be missed. It is yummy and everyone in there seemed like someone you would want to get to know better. We had the seafood special and it was delicious! One hiccup was that we ordered salads and they forgot to bring them...would have been nice if they had comp'd dessert or something. Atmosphere is warm friendly and fun. Super-Nova This is my go to place. Always fun, filled with some of The OC's finest bar goers. I can always strike up a conversation with anyone at the bar. The vibe here is so friendly, the people so diverse, the bartenders so willing to pour me yet another cocktail :))) The food is almost always satisfying, interesting and served by wonderful servers. From the Smoked Salmon potato skins, to the burger, to the pizza's to interesting entree's, there is always something I want to eat on the menu. Hits all the right buttons. The staff here are always so sweet and helpful, they go above and beyond. They automatically bought out water and a full on quinoa meal (which was supposedly a treat) for our dogs, which are, by the way, welcome on the patio and out front seating. The cocktails are delicious (every one of them I've tried) and the food is absolutely great. They have an amazing variety of dishes to choose from, my fav app is the fried green tomatoes, which is very unique to Nova. I also love the crab legs. Their specials are always great and they have an extensive wine list. Love this neighborhood joint, it's a fave of locals. I highly recommend this place! We come pretty often, we live just down the street. read more

A group of us came for brunch on a Saturday. Nova is a cute little place with a vintage diner feel. Unique decor and the waitstaff were very friendly. We asked our waiter for recommendations and she suggested the chicken fried pork loin. She said it's a lot of food, and even told us a story of how a customer had a heart attack after eating it! :0. Three of us ended up ordering the dish, and we were not disappointed. She wasn't kidding when she warned us about the portion size! The pork was crunchy and tender, sauce was flavorful, even their ranch was good. My only critique is that our eggs were a bit undercooked. I could still see bits of clear egg white. Overall a good experience, and I got enough leftovers for a second brunch! read more

Such an eclectic restaurant! After the VP debate last night, we decided to get dinner - pretty late on a Tuesday, so we were surprised not only that Nova was open and taking food orders, they were friendly, welcoming and even accommodated my small dog. The watermelon and sashimi appetizer was delivered quickly and tasted great. I really liked my crab salad that included fresh tomatoes and wedge salad drizzled in a curry dressing. Went for dinner last night. Cool vibe here. It was an old Dairy Queen. Good service and good good. Met the owner and he was very nice. Started with some appetizers: Beet Salad- very good Chicken and Cabbage salad- had half order. Awesome Pizza with Pesto and Shrimp- Really nice flavor. Fresh Shrimp. Didn't love the crust. A bit thick for me. Hummus- Great pita, ok hummus. Entrees: Broiled Chicken Breast- Nice flavor, a bit over cooked. Cauliflower Au Gratin on plate was very good. Ramen- Was not my thing Dessert: Bread Pudding- Awesome, with a berry compote. I enjoyed this place. Look forward to trying other things next time. read more

We went out to Dallas for my favorite restaurant. It turned out that they change their hours and now closed on Sunday's. It was a bummer but we wanted to make the most of our drive out there and find something new that wouldn't disappoint compared to what we were already craving that day. I found and looked at reviews of places nearby and we decided on Nova based on reviews, photos, and menu items. I'm go glad we chose it! If you're in search of a new brunch adventure, Nova in Oakcliff, is a must try! You'll walk into a retro-style gastropub with a patio option. The waitress and owner were super friendly and upbeat. There was amazing live acoustic musicians playing during brunch. They have an extensive bar selection and brunch drink specials. And the food.. Wow! I really don't want to write this review. I so wanted to love you after those fantastic Bastille mussels, Nova. Unfortunately, I think I fell in love with the idea of you and the fact that I thought I already knew you because of the crowd you hang with. Alas, you aren't akin to your counterparts down the street, and for us, it just isn't meant to be. Overall, the entire experience was [this is hard] enormously disappointing. I'll concede that I believe my elevated expectations might have left this place no option but to fail. It's a trendy-style diner with a half step above diner-caliber food... that's it. Plain and simple. Don't expect anything more, and you might not leave as disappointed as I did. It's definitely NOT a dressy place. People in shorts and t-shirts on a Saturday night at 8pm made me feel a little out of place with my sundress, but then again, there were a few other parties that didn't get the "no need to dress up" memo who were in stilettos - I guess I just don't get it. Come one, come all? It was hot as hell inside - don't know if the AC isn't working right or what, but our table was going through ice water like crazy. No one likes swamp ass while they're trying to enjoy a meal, and if it's that hot, please don't forget to bring me my nice cold beer again. My husband hit the nail on the head when describing the food as gourmet bowling alley food. It pains me to repeat it, but it's quite accurate. It's not bad food, it's just not at all impressive. Tack on that we waited almost half an hour for it to come out (ahem, even the salad!), and it was just a poor experience. Here's the food breakdown: Goat cheese truffles = delicious, definitely a highlight Chicken parmesan sliders w/ garlic fries = average, fries were better than sliders which were really quite boring Beet salad = totally unlike what our party expected - it's more of a normal salad with chunks of yellow beet (aka, salad with beets, not a "beet salad"). However, the beet chunks were excellent - very fresh and earthy, but the salad was so uneventful it was almost overpoweringly boring. The dressing had virtually no flavor. Four meat pizza = best item we ordered. I think Jimmy's sausage could make a pile of poop delicious (maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration?), so I hate to say it, but I don't really attribute much of the success of this dish to Nova. And for $12, I'd expect a 12" 4-meat pizza to be piled a little higher with goodness. We were lucky enough to snag the unique entryway corner table with super swanky light fixture and a sweet lazy susan built into the table that made it way fun and easy to share all our selections. Unfortunately, it just wasn't a positive enough experience to make an effort to go back... especially with so many other fantastic finds in the area. I won't deny an opportunity to try Nova again, but it won't likely be on my own accord. If I return, I won't dress up, and I'll just focus on the mussels that I know I enjoy. read more

We came here for brunch and it was amazing!!! I can't quite remember the name of my dish but it had the veal with hollandaise sauce and eggs. It was almost like an eggs benedict with veal, but it didn't have the English muffin, or bread on the bottom. It was delish!!!! My friend ordered the french toast and I tried a bit of hers. I typically don't like french toast but it was sooooo good! It was a perfect amount of sweetness (i.e. not that sweet) and also it was fluffy and not that dense. I don't like my food dense unless it's meant to be. It just tasted very fresh. They also put goat cheese in it which I'm not a fan of, but it added to the taste and texture of it. A little bit of goat cheese was perfect but I scraped most of it off. All in all, the food is great. However, they ran out of coffee and the gentleman who served us was a little awkwardly rude. My very first bite of "crispy" polenta was so hot it burned my mouth (and was obviously reheated in a microwave) and had zero flavor. It took about 20-30 minutes to get a drink. I ordered the batch valentines cocktail listed at the top of the menu. My server forgot to bring it with the other drink, so that took another 10 minutes. Before I discuss my food issues, I want to let everyone know that the Spicy Tuna Tartare Tostada was actually very good. I enjoyed it. I was so hungry - the prix fixe menu was very small for $115 per person. I was never offered the wine pairing, which I would have done going into the experience. I'm glad that I didn't because wine couldn't save the food. After the first bite I hate to report that the rest of the food was also bland, burnt, and disgusting. My crispy duck confit was SCORCHED. The duck was dry. The kumquat sauce was the only flavor on the main course. The quinoa risotto was dry and flavorless. Very disappointing and underwhelming. Next, I was praying this bread pudding situation was going to leave my experience on a good note. Nope. They sliced a French bread baguette, burnt it, scooped melted ice cream on top and random unmelted chocolate chips. That's embarrassing. Not only is this not bread pudding...it's not fine dining. It was gross. Zero out of 5 stars. Do not eat here!

They use flat long pasta in their Cacio e Pepe that is so delicious, flavorful, and hearty and top the dish off with a generous amount of Parmesan cheese. I also appreciate how late their kitchen is open in the evenings (10-11 pm) so you can stop by for a late night bite.

I was quiet impressed at the overall presentation. When my party did arrive, I wanted to keep it simple so I ordered the Chicken Cobb Salad and a Hibiscus Haze with Vodka. The table shmoozed as we ate some of the appetizers: the Crab Dip & Green Tomatoes, both amazing. The food did take some time but, considering it was 10-12 of us, that's expected. The Hibiscus Haze was splendid: smooth & flavorful, a great concoction. Cobb salads are usually pretty thick but this one was HEARTY. It came in a large bowl stuffed with the all the toppings. The dressing it was tossed with was well balanced but could've used a tad bit more. With some pepper & a little ranch, I was set! I defeated the salad but it also left me stuffed to the gills. Satisfying meal that I would order again! There are tons of restaurants to dine at in Dallas & sometimes you never know which is worth your time. I guess saying all of this, your front staff need to have more people skills when dealing with your customers. They are the face and first point of contact. A couple of us recently stopped by Nova with pooches in tow. Even on a warm, muggy summer night, the patio was irresistible. Immediately after we sat down, we were greeted by a friendly employee with a tray of ice-water in hand. While he was lovin' on the dogs, another employee came out to take our drink orders. Resistance to the charms of our furry friends proved futile for him as well. While enjoying a refreshing, St. Arnold's Lawnmower, complete with frosty mug, we couldn't help but be impressed with the warm reception we'd gotten. This place clearly LOVES dogs. Perhaps just as much as it loves its customers. A total of 3 employees made their way out to greet the dogs, during our time there. Clearly, we were the most popular folks there... The pups ice water was refilled numerous times while we enjoyed our delicious Lamb Kofta and Vietnamese-style NY strip. Taking into account the friendly service, atmosphere and most importantly the food, Nova is a class-act. Somewhere to revisit again and again. Especially with the dogs! read more

For some of you that can manage to make the trek away from the "hip" Bolsa, throw on a pair of jeans and flats and head over to Nova. Its small (Approx 20 or so tables - but a big patio outside for warmer weather), intimate, cozy and everything you want it to be and more. The speciality cocktials are delicious and the hummus and smoked salmon potato skins are just the start. The pizza was great, lots of toppings and a thicker crust without being over bearing but the hot spot was most certainly the noodles and the bowl seems to keep growing...its almost impossible to reach the bottom of the bowl. Only two desserts though a chocolate cheesecake and something else, I cant remember but the cheesecake was rich, yet somehow light. Drink and dinner prices were great. Nothing overly expensive and for the most part the average price was between $12-$15 and $6-$9 for cocktails and glasses of wine. Service was most certainly a plus! read more

As much as I want to LOVE this place because the food is great, it's ALWAYS something with their service. Today, I called in an order at 1:16 and was told my food would be ready in 15 minutes. I sat at the bar and didn't get my food until 2:06 without ever getting an apology or explanation. They weren't slammed or even very busy and didn't offer us ANY condolence. I told our server I wasn't happy about the wait and her response was "I don't know what I can do for you". I will likely not be back here again. First time trying nova after all the hype. Waited for a table to fit two when there were two bigger tables that they were "saving just in case" for a bigger party. Finally they let us take the big table as I see them seat another party of two who came in after us. Our drinks came out with our appetizers. Both were delicious though. Waited for the pizza for over 40 mins... Finally told them to scratch the pizza and left. Server wasn't friendly, the experience was pretty lame. My boyfriend and I celebrated our anniversary here. He got off work late, but thankfully the kitchen was open until 10pm on a Sunday. It's hard for us to find time to celebrate together due to our business travels, so this was a special treat. The dishes were a great mix of delicious flavors and fresh ingredients.
