My husband and I started off by splitting the Wagyu Pigs in a Blanket which were good but I wouldn't order again. It just didn't seem to be anything over the top special so I would rather order something else as an app. My husband ordered the fried chicken and I got the Crispy Chicken Katsu. Both were delicious and I would definitely recommend trying both! The Katsu came with a spicy mayo that made the sandwich perfect! Celebrated a friend's birthday at Culinary Dropout and had a great time! The atmosphere was lively, making it a fun spot for a birthday gathering. I sampled a few bites from everyone's plates, including the Pepperoni & Italian Sausage Pizza, Fried Chicken (buttermilk biscuit, smashed potatoes, and Brussels sprouts), and the Crunchy Chicken Tacos (queso Oaxaca, refried black beans, roasted corn slaw, and salsa borracha). Everything I tried had great flavor and was well prepared. I also tried the Spicy Rigatoni with chicken sausage, roasted mushrooms, spinach, Calabrian panna, and pecorino breadcrumbs. I customized mine by swapping the chicken sausage for blackened chicken and removing the mushrooms, and it was delicious! Several people in our group ordered the Beer Battered Fish & Chips with coleslaw and tartar sauce, and they all raved about it. Overall, Culinary Dropout was a great choice for a birthday celebration good food, a fun atmosphere, and plenty of options for everyone at the table. I'll start with a positive -- the appetizers were actually quite good. The deviled eggs, dragon roll, and pigs in a blanket were all tasty, and that's honestly the highlight of our visit. Unfortunately, everything else was a struggle from the moment we walked in. We didn't have reservations, but eventually found seats at the bar. Given how busy the place was, we figured the bar would mean faster, more attentive service. We were very wrong. We ordered two beers, a non-alcoholic drink, and three appetizers. The drinks arrived, and the appetizers followed about 10 minutes later -- fine so far. But there were no utensils. We had to ask for them, and we asked for plates as well, which never came. The empty dishes from our appetizers sat in front of us for a solid hour with no one clearing them. The bartender who took our order never once checked on us. With 3-4 people working behind the bar, only one server approached us during the entire 40-minute wait between appetizers and dinner to ask if we needed anything. The bartender told us twice that our food was "coming out shortly" -- and still, 40 minutes passed. When dinner finally arrived, my order was wrong. I ordered the Mongolian Short Rib, listed clearly under the Entree section of the menu. The bartender claimed I had ordered off a "happy hour" menu -- one I never saw or was told about -- and had swapped it for BBQ Pork Ribs without saying a word. Knowing a replacement could take another hour, my friend swapped plates with me and took the ribs. He had ordered the steak frites, which, for a rare steak, should have taken no more than 5-6 minutes to prepare. The third entree, fish and chips, was just okay -- a bit soggy and not particularly fresh. To top it all off, after everything we dealt with, the bartender never asked how our meal was or if we needed anything else. The good news is this place is a solid 4 stars, and for me, 5 is very much within reach. Everything was good, just a few easy misses. We had planned to hike the Katy Trail and grab lunch somewhere along the trail, but it started raining on the drive, so we pivoted to my nearest bookmarked spot and ended up here. Yea! Matthew our server turned my initial review around! He was very attentive and very knowledgeable of the Happy Hour menu! My coworkers and I met here after work on Thursday not realizing we were needing a reservation. (FIFA in town) Anyways, we were seated rather quickly. Came here Saturday with my mom and sat on the rooftop. The Dallas skyline view alone is worth it, but what always stands out to me is the culture of this place. You can tell everyone genuinely enjoys working there. Servers were attentive nd incredibly cool, while the manager was walking around checking on tables and enjoying to customers -- just a really warm, welcoming energy throughout. Haven't been to a New American restaurant in a while, so was sorta anxious. Menu seemed a little limited and was more bar oriented. However, the chopped chicken salad sounded like the choice for me. Of note- we were not offered the menu and had to ask for it! Docking one star because the service was a little slow (took 30 minutes to get our food) and our order was rung up incorrectly (didn't apply the HH deal for our drinks), but the waitress was kind and apologetic about it. As for the food - my favorite was surprisingly the frosty fries! Crispy and not too salty with a side of vanilla soft serve. Such a fun and nostalgic ode to the classic McDonalds pairing! I also enjoyed the spicy tuna crispy rice, but the california roll was comparable to grocery store quality. I can't believe it's normally priced at $17 for just 8 small pieces! I love this place! It's easily at the top of the list of places to dine. I love the ambience and the decor. It's very casual and relaxed atmosphere while holding an upscale aesthetic. The location is great, as it sits just outside of downtown Dallas so you get a great view of the skyline. The valet service is free and operated only from tips. The food was really good! Would give 3.5 if I could- not for the food but for the overall experience. Came here two weeks ago for the DFW Restaurant Week Prix Fixe menu. It was a great value for the price and the food was delicious! The vibes both inside and on the rooftop are great. Unfortunately my biggest complaint was the service. Our waiter let us know that since we were ordering from the restaurant week menu that we could place our entire order right away. What he didn't tell us was that literally everything (2 margs, 2 apps, 2 entrees, 2 desserts) would all come out at once.... Our small table was quickly way too full and could barely fit everything. The other waiter who brought out all of our food just apologized for the small table and consolidated the plates but I genuinely could not believe they were okay with bringing everything out at once?? Our apps and entrees were tasty, but our cheese fondue quickly got cold and thick, the prime rib au jus got cold, meanwhile our vanilla ice cream was melting, our chocolate ganache was too thick to pour, and the monkey bread was cold and hard by the time we got to it. So attentive, gave thorough and relatable suggestions, offered dietary replacement, and knew that menu well. Hats off to you! If you've never been to Culinary Dropout, it's an up scale (maybe mid scale?) scratch kitchen that offers a great twist to tons of Southern classic cuisine. The Design District location offers decent parking options (free during the day), and has a massive rooftop for cooler days. I ordered the steak frites this time and we shared an app of deviled eggs.
