Overhyped. Based on all the positive Yelp reviews, I was expecting a sandwich which was out of this world. Meat & Bread was good and the staff was extremely friendly, but my Porchetta sandwich was pretty average for the $9.5 cost. They do make everything fresh for the day so rest assured your meal will have been made that day. With a simple menu, service is fast and effective. Making Meat & Bread a decent spot for lunch. I didn't get order dessert, but the ice cream sandwichs is a unique idea. Meat & Bead does serve Stumptown Coffee, which is some of my favorite coffee in the country, so that is a bonus. read more

Love this place for their porchetta sandwich (especially with the crackling on top) *drool*. However today's visit was for a special occasion as they had their annual 3 day only "turducken" sandwich. We waited for just over an hour during lunch peak time. For $12.50 it was good but I think the porchetta tastes better and is priced a bit cheaper. They weren't selling the porchetta today. Normally I would give this place a 4.5/5 but there was some grinch girl with terribly dyed green hair who took this star down a notch. It wouldn't hurt to crack a smile and to tone down the IDGAF attitude. You can still be real without being rude. Great sandwiches served on a cutting board. There are so many choices to choose from which makes ordering so hard but I went with the meatball sandwich for my love of tomato sauce and bread and the Vietnamese style sandwich. No regrets here, except not capturing a photo of my meatball sandwich. I didn't love the Vietnamese sandwich but I definitely enjoyed the meatballs sandwich. Meat & Bread was really good but I'm not sure if I would wait another hour in the freezing cold for it...I'm not sure if it was because of their Turducken special or if the line is always that long, but one hour seems a bit long for a sandwich. We ordered the "beef bourguignon" and the "turducken" sandwiches along with their kale Caesar salad. We came in expecting to order the "porchetta" and were initially disappointed that it wasn't on the menu, but the turducken definitely blew us away and was a good replacement. The beef bourguignon wasn't for me, but I'm sure beef lovers would say it was good. There just wasn't enough seasoning or garlic aioli for the amount of meat in the sandwich. I loved the salad though! And the other couple in our group opted for the tomato soup which was also amazing. So would I come back? I arrived here about 10 minutes before they opened and there was already a line outside. I got the experience them pulling out fresh bread and porchetta right out of the oven. I ordered the PORCHETTA SANDWICH and GRILLED CHEESE. The Porchetta was basically just meat and bread. I see where they get their name. Oh and some salsa verde as well. It was served with house mustard which added a nice little touch. The meat was juicy and had bits of the crunchy rinds. The perfect grilled cheese has just the right amount of melt with the bread golden brown with just the right amount of crunch. This one really hit all the marks. There were strings of red onions that gave a nice flavor to the cheese. The house mustard and hot red sauce went really well with the cheese. Porchetta sandwich!! It's a meat lovers heaven! I don't know how you order anything else besides the porchetta sandwich. As you stand in line, you watch them cut and prepare your sandwich. It's drool worthy and mesmerizing. The sandwich is meaty with a nice crunch from the skin. You have to dip it in the mustard, which adds a nice kick. Finally! A restaurant in Vancouver that plays GOOD music. Everywhere I have been out here so far plays oldies (from the 90's, that is). Of course I find the best one on my last day in BC. This spot definitely gives off the hipster vibes, hence the good tunes. I had their daily special which was a pork sandwich. I believe the key to five stars and great customer service here beyond imagination. It's my first time here and even if there is a long line they move fast and generally have a smile and friendly disposition. When I entered the store, there is someone greets and help you what to eat base of your liking BEFORE you get to the order spot. I ordered Porchetta for take out as she recommended. The sandwich are what you'd expect from hype sandwich shop which is to say that they are pretty damn delicious. Wow!!! It was nicely seasoned and juicy meat. They put a good amount of protein. Sooo good. I've been here a handful of times for lunch and have never been disappointed! I've always received great service every time. The greeter plays a nice touch when it gets busy! The greeter greets you at the door (where the line has usually snaked around to when I go during weekday lunches) and asks if you've been before and what the special is. Super helpful for a newbie to understand what's going on with their simple menu. Prices for their sandwiches range from $7-9 with choices of the very popular porchetta, a daily special, meatball, grilled cheese and some other sides like soup/salad. I always gravitate towards the porchetta but now looking at all the Yelp pics of specials, I'm going with one next time! The grilled cheese was really nice and crispy - I loved the crust and the super oozy cheese. It had a really nice bite to it from the thin strands of red onion which you couldn't taste. Porchetta always a winner. I love how they've turned it into an art and showcase with the sandwich artist at the front counter. Always fun to watch while you're waiting in line. It's placed between ciabatta, add some salsa verde with a squirt of grainy mustard on the side, served on a small wooden board. Very simple. I gotta say though, the pork skin and the mustard are the best part about the sandwich. Pork skin adds so much texture to it and whenever I hear that crunch in my mouth, I am just happier! I can probably eat a whole sandwich just with that pork skin haha. The mustard is as good it gets and I make sure that every bite would have mustard on it. I did wish the pork was a little juicier and that they added more salsa verde since it was a little on the dry side. Also, the sandwich is not very big, but it is priced like one. This Gastown neighbourhood sandwich shop is a solid assembly line of meaty bread goodness. I love most everything about its charming nature and simplicity. I really dug the meatball sandwich. I actually don't like big meatballs so I really love the ground beef style meatball sandwich there. It's so overflowing with meat. It's crazy and damn tasty. The porchetta is probably the signature sandwich with its smell waffling from outside. You're in awe as you watch them slice and dice it right in front of you. I liked it but, it was so meaty. I overloaded. It was very good, but not entirely my thing. I grabbed a grilled cheese to go. It was quite good, but it left something else to be desired for me. And for a dollar more, the other sandwiches prove a much better value. I overheard someone saying it was probably the best grilled cheese they ever had and I would never say that. The final delight, however, is the one of a kind ice cream sandwich featuring vanilla ice cream with bacon bits and maple syrup in between two cookie cracker shells. Oh my, it's incredibly delicious. The combination of sweet and salty tastes is refreshing and addictive. This mishmash of flavours all gel together for a great treat that's positively scrumptious and delectable. Went on a Tuesday, just at the end of the lunch hour rush. A bit crowded, had to stand in a queue to order and pick up order and then find seating. While in line, I espied an empty seat, I left the line and placed my sweater there to save it. I was dining alone and did not have the benefit of having a friend help with pick up and seating. I ordered perchetta (roasted pork with pesto - and a generous sprinkling of pork crackling!). My only concern with the serving was that one female server was not wearing gloves and was handling the food with bare hands. To her credit, I did not see her handle money or touch her face it hair, but ... still .... I would have felt more comfortable if this food handler was wearing gloves (as the rest of the food handlers were). When I got to my table, I noted the bread was elastic enough to hold the meat, but tender enough for easy eating. It was the perfect balance! The meat was perfectly cooked and flavours good. I enjoyed my meat and bread with a 33 acres of ocean pale ale (a local brewery off Main Street). It was a good accompaniment. I will return, but at a less busy time. read more

FOOD * Porchetta (5/5) - The combination of all ingredients in one harmonious sandwich = heaven! I'm not big on sandwiches, as I usually take the opinion that all sandwiches basically taste the same. But this one is special; the flavors of the meat, the crispy bites of skin, soft bread, and their MUSTARD really go so well together. I think if the sandwich was missing even one of these ingredients, it wouldn't have tasted so good. TIP: Buy some of their homemade mustard! I regret not picking some up on the way out. :( read more

Kudos to their marketing as the place was obviously abuzz on a Saturday afternoon. All seats were occupied and there was a long queue. As you queue up, you'll see their preparation of the signature porchetta sandwich - roasted pork chopped up complete with crispy skin and just enough fat to make you go ooh and aahh at the same time, topped with a salsa made of parsley. My sandwich was good, but nnooot quite as juicy as it looked on Diners Drive-In & Dives, which is why I decided to check this place out. Aside from the "experience" of being in the store that everyone is talking about, the sandwich itself could probably have been a bit hotter to bring out both the taste of the pork and the bread. Too bad, because the pork looked awesome. That's where they lost one star. I had to compare the pork to the Chinese BBQ roasted pork (the one with crispy skin, a layer of fat, and meat with sometimes some bones). I can't even explain why it's so yummy and it doesn't taste fatty at all. The other sandwich we had was turkey I think with onions and a side of mustard. This was done very well too. The service is very efficient, once you get to the counter they'll have all your food ready and in front of you by the time the cashier is done ringing you up. Finally made it down to a Meat and Bread location (Gastown), today for a late (2pm) lunch. Still a long lineup even so late into the lunch hours, but there was still seating at the long communal table so turnaround appears to be quick. Monday Special: Peace Country Kashmiri Lamb, Garlic Aioli, Fried Onions, Cabbage Slaw, Cilantro ($9.50) Probably better hotter but I had to sneak it out of the place to take a pic at VCC since no one else was taking pics there. The chewy-crusted bread was OK but chewing it too fast made my jaw ache. Yeah, it's that chewy. Lamb was tender for being pulled lamb, but otherwise a bit on the dry side, but helped by the aioli. Weak on flavours of garlic, fried onions, and cilantro. But lamb was tasty and very flavourful, easily making up for the shortfall. If you think of this as a $10 burger with no side, it comes in on-par with most restaurant or gourmet burgers. Plus counter service means no tip really necessary, so it works out to a medium or light meal (depending on your appetite) for $10, which can be really rare these days, especially if you're looking for something tasty and not ordinary. read more

I give this place a 5!!!! We walked into this place at the perfect time, it was lunch time but only 1 person in front of us...then BAM....a huge line behind us. We got the porchetta sandwich and meatball sandwich....they were both absolutely fantastic!!! Porchetta was super freshly sliced and came with crunchy skin....the meatball was cooked perfectly and the sauce with a little kick. I like this place as it is totally casual and the staff was very nice. One big long table in the middle and a counter with stools to sit at. Get to know your neighbor style!!! It gets quite crowded there so hopefully you can get a seat....not a sit down and chat for a while type of place as you will probably get weird looks when people have food in their hands looking for a spot to sit down. The queues at lunch time can get insane however you don't normally need to wait more than 10 mins for your meal. I went to Meat and Bread 4 times within a week and a half! Not only is the food good, their speed of service and consistency kept us coming back over and over. Their menu is huge (which I like), and simple (also like!). They do four types of sandwiches a day: their pride and joy pork sandwich (Porchetta), their special of the day (BBQ Duck Bahn Mi, Beef Sauerbraten, and Spicy Chicken are the ones I've tried), a fantastic meatball staple, and a vegetarian grilled cheese. They also have soups that change up daily! I've tried their Carrot Fennel so far. Out of all the sandwiches, the Porchetta still stands tall. Super tender pork, crispy pork skin, delicious salsa verde, umphy ciabatta bun, and a killer good mustard is packed together into one epic sandwich. Have one of these with the Fentimsns Ginger Beer and you'll hit food coma before you get back to the office!
