I stopped in and had a Lauren's sandwich for lunch and it was great! The sourdough bread was really good, the veggies were fresh and crunchy, and the feta spread and black bean hummus that tied it together were delicious! It was just one guy working when I ordered (I think it was around 10:30, so not long after they opened), and he made the sandwich to order while also answering a bunch of phone calls, so it was a little bit of a wait, but reasonable for fresh food, and the sandwich looked like it was put together very carefully. The environment was very warm and cozy, and the man working was so nice. The prices are also more than reasonable! read more

LOOOOOOOVE this place so much! I discovered this spot quite by accident when I was attending university in Vancouver. My boyfriend at the time and I went on a mission for tomato soup and amazingly happened to find Harvest and THE BEST tomato soup! Now, years later, I'm so thrilled that it's still here and the tomato soup is even better than I remember it. Worth coming all the way up from California for! Plus the sandwiches are all equally delicious! They can even make every sandwich vegan and their daal soup is also vegan. There's a reason why this place is a favorite with the locals. Rami, the guy who runs it, is there every day pouring love into the kitchen. You can tell the restaurant is a full of passion and it really makes a difference. Ordered a roast beef sandwich and bottled lemonade. I was expecting an independent sandwich shop to use better quality or fresh sandwich meat but its like they got it from a safeway. The meat distribution was lazy too with it just folded in the middle of the bread so there was no meat near the sides. Other than that the bread was great the sauce (sundried tomato pesto mayo) was great and they didnt overload the sandwich with it. Excellent selection of soda/drinks to go along with the more independent feel of the shop. I enjoyed the cherry lemonade even if it wasnt made in house. The service wasnt great. When i walked in the employees chilling in the kitchen for over 2 minutes while i waited at the counter to be served. Once they came up i did not feel welcome like they didnt really want to be working there and wanted to get back to the kitchen asap so they could talk. I had high expectations based on reviews and was sorely dissapointed. I will not return and i'd recommend either they source better quality sandwich meats or make it in house. 6/10 read more

I think I've got this figured out. Really, I do. I'm pretty much a Montreal smoked meat rookie, and now having tried it various ways, meaning: 1. On some regular untoasted bread with mustard or, 2. Jazzed up in some way or another, and on something toasted. #2 is the clear winner for me. The taste is just *that* much better, IMHO. It wasn't the meat that made it for me, but the sandwich overall. Mr Montreal piles on the meat, with Swiss cheese, Dijon mustard on toasted bread, and it make the sandwich much, much better. Yay. Everything is made in front of you while you wait. There's minimal seating with a couple of the IKEA bistro table sets and a large communal table. They have multiple types of sandwiches to choose from. I know I'll be coming back for some sourdough thing of some sort at some point in time. In the back, there are some basic groceries for sale. We tried #14 classic reuben and #17 who is it. The sandwhiches were pretty meaty and delicious. Everything tasted fresh - no complaints with the sandwiches. Also, the prices were pretty reasonable. I think it would be pretty handy if they had a drink menu. I noticed they had a coffee machine and other drinks in their display but I wasn't quite sure what else they had. This place is full of regulars for a reason. I tried #35 "Back to Athens" and it was really good! Initially was nervous about the turkey being a little pink, and instead of being annoyed with me, the owner explained the cooking process and offered to make me a new one just to appease my stress about it. I felt really bad, but he was friendly and happy to do it. The owner seems to take pride into what he does, and there is a reason why so many people come back for more. Absolutely our favourite spot for a delicious sandwich. The turkey with cranberry sauce and crunchy lettuce on a lightly toasted sourdough is a favourite of heavenly goodness. Plus my husband eats only Vegan so Harvest Deli has a few great items for him. Plus there is an breakfast shakshouka to die for, he has a brekkie egg on muffin which he will sub avocado for bacon. Kids or anyone wanting a sweet order a grilled pb and j from kids menu. We like the owner who works so hard, and is friendly when you are able to talk to him. Just wonderful. I live four blocks from Harvest Deli and have now eaten ten sandwiches from this tiny Kitsilano deli. In fact, I am eating a BAM right now, and honestly think it may be the best sandwich I have ever had: grilled and buttered sourdough, generous amounts of crispy bacon, ripe avocado, caramelised onions, arugula, melted aged cheddar, and russian dressing. It is super super awesome. I just turned to my girlfriend to ask her to contribute to this review, but her BAM disappeared after the first sentence. Amazingly good. Each sandwich is made to order and the ingredients are very very fresh, and thoughtfully composed. The owner also makes two soups fresh every day, and service is prompt and polite. I lived in the UK for several years, and there are sandwich shops in every neighbourhood. Whether it is due to VanCity's fear of carbs, or due to our city's eclectic tastes and wide variety of ethnic options, Vancouver has surprisingly few delis and sandwich shops. When done right, a sandwich is the perfect food, and HD has restored my passion for these simple yet satisfying snacks. I have a few minor criticisms. Their multigrain bun is fairly dense and detracts from the delicious fillings within. Also, the business has been working on its branding and signage for about a year, and this gives the shop a "temporary" and slightly unprofessional feel. There are over two dozen sandwich options, but the menu is a bit confusing and wordy. Once you know how to navigate through it, everything is fine and scrumptious...but I was intimidated by it the first time I explored it. Nitpicking aside, I am a HUGE fan and a bi-weekly supporter of Harvest Deli. Mmmmmmm. PS - A good tactic to tackle HD's massive menu: bring a buddy, order two sandwiches, and then split them. I've worked on West Broadway for the past 3 years and somehow managed to never see this place. On yelp's recommendation, I ventured in on my way home and was blown away by the quality of the food. The single employee there was doing an excellent job of managing the entire dinning group and whipped out a handful of mouth-watering sandwiches. Though YELP suggests this place takes VISA, please note that their cash registered states that they only accept debit or cash. Bring a variety of payment options to be sure. The menu was a little bit confusing as it was very large so I opted for the Bacon Avocado Melt which was a chalk-board special. Not disappointed in the least. This is a small but very classy hole in the wall. I love the dark stained tables which match the floors and chandeliers. The decor is simple but elegant and they currently are playing smooth jazz. It's actually a very interesting vibe in this space. Today I had the Mr. Montreal. Smoked brisket, Dijon, Swiss on sourdough. It was very good! Pricey, but good. The guy kind of reminded me of the soup Nazi from Seinfeld. He didn't smile. Just asked what would you like? For here or to go. Have a seat it will be 5 minutes. No smile. He waived me over, handed me my sandwich, took my cash and asked me if I wanted pickles. Then wrapped two pickles and that was it. But boy was the sandwich good! read more

I don't know why Harvest Deli isn't packed to the rafters day and night. I've been here several times and the food is always amazing. AND the sandwiches are made fresh when you order them, not stacked up wrapped in cling film in a cooler, made who-knows-when. I absolutely love the Caprese salad (only $6.95), with everything super-fresh: arugula, sliced tomatoes and bocconcini, tasty olives and a delicious dressing I can't get enough of. I could eat this delicious plateful every day and not get bored. Sandwiches are loaded with goodness with 20 or so choices for meatlovers and vegetarians too. There's even a kids' menu. My granddaughter has loved the "thrilled cheese" and the tuna salad sandwich. As a matter of fact, she requests that we go here cuz she so enjoys the food and the big harvest table seating. Apparently the coffee is delicious, and there's an interesting selection of cold drinks. A blackboard lists the day's specials, including homemade soups, and Harvest Deli even does all-day breakfasts. This part of Broadway seems to be hurting a little, business-wise. The cupcake shop is gone, as are other small businesses. Please visit Harvest Deli for a delicious lunch while you've got the chance. Judging by the other reviews, I either came here on a bad day - or people like the idea of this place more than the execution. It is a lovely concept: a cozy, simple neighborhood sandwich spot. Unfortunately, neither sandwich I tried was satisfactory. I'm not a meat maniac, but the reuben was the skimpiest I've seen - should have at at least 50% more corned beef. Worse, the Picasso chicken sandwich was dominated by the stale chicken taste. My americano was delicious (they use Caffe Umbria beans), but I won't be back for the food. read more

I've lived in Vancouver all my life - and we are not necessarily known for our great sandwich spots. However, the Harvest Deli is exceptional. There are over two dozen different sandwiches to choose from (the initially overwhelmingly large menu is an ode to the classic sandwich spot), and all of them are equally delicious. Their sourdough bread is out of this world, and it is expertly toasted. Your sauce of choice is used sparingly, as to not create a wet, soggy mess (my pet peeve with a lot of sandwiches!). The vegetables are crisp and fresh, and the meats are delicious. The icing on the cake? Your sandwich will be accompanied by a pickle! Just don't expect ultra speedy service - the owner makes your sandwich himself, to order. I'm confident this is the best sandwich spot in Vancouver. read more

Is the honeymoon already over? I returned to Harvest Deli Friday just before noon to try another sandwich from their extensive menu. The chef/owner was sitting at a cafe table in front. I asked him if the deli was open for business. He said that he managed to lock himself out of both the front AND back door and no one else has a key. Quick tips: 1) Read as many of the sandwich options that you can. There are so many options you will probably see one that you like, but if you continue reading, you may find an even better one to fit your sandwich craving 2) The sandwiches are deceptively filling and use fresh and local ingredients; be prepared to be full. I was on my way to pick up my fiancee from UBC one evening since she was working late in the lab. I wanted to bring her a sandwich or something similar, since I figured she'd be hungry. Unfortunately, I wasn't at home when I had this thought. However, fortunately, I was in Kits and came across the Harvest Deli. I am happy to say, it was my first visit and it will most certainly not be my last. Since June 2011, the Harvest Deli has been open near the corner of Broadway and Baywater. Looking into the deli through the giant front window, you can see the Harvest Deli has a European feel to it, with wooden tables and simple decorations. The shop is fairly minimalistic, but is bright, clean and inviting. As you enter the deli, the seating area is immediately in front of you, with the food prep and working station at the back. As soon as I entered the deli that evening, I was greeted by the wonderful smell of fresh baked bread and a simmering soup. These two smells removed any second thought I may have remotely had to try somewhere else; only encouraging me to go in even further to see what the deli had to offer. Looking on the side wall is 3 large stylized signs displaying the menu. There are 50+ sandwiches, ~5 salads and the option of 1 or 2 soups of the day on the menu. I've so far tried 2 sandwiches (The Who Knew?! and the That's Fast!). Both were incredibly tasty and filling and I would most certainly recommend. I especially enjoyed the That's Fast, which easily had over 3/4 of a pound of house prepared, juicy, succulent roast beef and pastrami. I had the fortune to chat with the owner/chef as he was putting together my order. He was very friendly and loved to talk about food with me. He told me he believes food doesn't need to be overcomplicated, but the quality needs to be there. As a result, he always uses fresh made bread, free range chicken meat, wild salmon, high quality local produce, freshly in-house prepared marinades, spreads and sauces, and much more. I like this philosophy, and it's reflected in the smell, texture and taste of the food. Yes, Harvest Deli is predominantly a sandwich shop. However, the sandwiches taste excellent and fresh. The sandwiches taste nothing like a pre-packaged sandwich or one that uses processed materials. Harvest Deli's dedication to quality, as well as local and/or sustainable food sources is great! There is no doubt that this place fits right in with the other shops of Kits. With all this said, the price of the food is still very reasonable with almost all the sandwiches being less than $10 (most sandwiches fall in the range of $7-9). Many of the sandwiches come in two sizes (~5 oz of meat and ~ 8 oz of meat), with the bigger size being $1.50-2 more than the smaller size. The cheeses used are generous and tasty. I asked for aged cheddar, which was nice and sharp. In some of the giant deli sandwiches it will be 14-16 oz of meat, and cost about $12. Some may say this is a little high, but for fresh, quality ingredients that fill you up, I say this is spot on. The Harvest Deli also provides vegetarian sandwiches and sandwiches aimed at kids, but can most certainly be ordered by adults (i.e. organic peanut butter and strawberry jam; 3 cheese grilled cheese; free range egg salad). The many in-house made breads, fresh/crisp veggies, fresh spreads/marinades and juicy meat, make the sandwiches something that would be time consuming at home and require me to have many ingredients. At the Harvest Deli, I can have a satisfying sandwich and save myself a lot of time and the need to buy a shopping cart of veggies, baking supplies and meat. As I was waiting for my sandwiches being made, I overheard a lady at one table telling her dinner companion how much she was enjoying the soup of the day -- a lentil soup. She must have really enjoyed it since she made a take away order so she could enjoy it later. I didn't try the soup that evening, but it looked and smelled wonderful. I know I will definitely try the soup-du-jour next time I go to the Harvest Deli. Overall, The Harvest Deli is a great place to grab a sandwich, salad or soup. The dedication to using fresh, local ingredients is a great thing to see in a sandwich shop. The sandwiches may seem a little more pricy than a chain sandwich shop, but you will be full and will notice the improvement that quality ingredients make for something as simple as a sandwich. The place is super small, but we lucked out grabbing one of the three tables after we ordered. Be warned: this is a really small shop and might be better to take your food to go if you mind sharing a table with strangers. As for the food, the bf and I both got the free-range chicken sandwich with ranch, cucumbers and cheddar cheese on sourdough. Apparently this is their most popular one and I understand why that is now. It was mighty tasty, grilled like a grilled cheese and full of nice chicken breast - not sliced, pressed meat. Accidentally walked by this deli a few weeks ago and have been back 3 times since. They have a 40+ item list of deli sandwiches. I've only tried 3 sandwiches so far and it is difficult to find fault with any of them. First let me get this out of the way, I expect a deli sandwich to be well-priced, under $10 - at the end of the day, it is just a sandwich. Harvest Deli sandwiches are in the $7-9 range so that works. The ingredients must be fresh and not taste like a sandwich I can pickup from Save-On or IGA. This is where Harvest shines. They use unique breads and ingredients with generous portions of meat - I seriously hate deli's that give thin almost transparent slices of meat in my sandwich. I keep coming back because for the $7-9 that I spend, it is not a basic sandwich that I can easily make at home. I know the owner has gone to some trouble to source free-range chicken, wild salmon etc. When I eat a deli sandwich here I feel like it's a special treat for the day rather than just filling up my belly. I'm also appreciative of the fact that the sandwiches aren't over-salted. I'm very salt-conscious and I stopped going to most deli's because the meats have an extremely high salt-content even before they sprinkle extra salt on it. The only complaint I have is that the owner seems to be run off his feet most of the time so be prepared to wait if there are multiple customers. If my wife and I commit to working our way through the menu one day a week, we should be finished eating in about two years. Like an earlier reviewer, we decided to go with the chalkboard choices. My wife chose Mr. Montreal (Monsieur Montreal?), whose centerpiece was a mountain of exquisitely thin-sliced brisket, and I went with BAM (homage to Emeril?), a bacon-avocado-melted-cheese confection that was light, yet filling. The bread was buttery and grilled to perfection. As several reviewers have pointed out, the sandwiches take a long time to make. But this is not fast food; it's sandwich high art. I eat at Tera V a lot, which is right next door. They had closed early for mothers day, and we were hungry. We walk into this place, completely inconspicuous, probably walked by it a million times. Its a deli, with a fantastic Algerian chef, and passionate about food. We started talking about Chakchouka, which is served here. I grew up on it, with my mum making it for me for breakfast on days that I was a good little boy. He made it for us, and cue the scene from Ratatouille, where the critic was sent back to his childhood, this happened to me. The food here is outstanding, the prices are great, the portion size is perfect. I also had the roast beef, again just outstanding. This felt like one of those places that you walk by, have a great experience, and wish you find it again the next time you walk by.
