I was here earlier with my class mate M and he said Meat &Bread is his frequent place for lunch so I joined. M&B was already busy after 12 and we didn't wait too long in line. Just lucky making on time on our 30 minute break from VCC. M got Buffalo Chicken ($9.50) so I got the same one. Staff were already busy here and there, one person doing cash, another person slicing meat, and someone else was making the sandwich. I loved how my sandwich was fresh. The best part was the chicken it was moist and tender. Sandwich bun was crispy and soft. The veggie filling (coleslaw) was good too. Presentation was unique. I often get sandwich in a box or paperwrap, but it came on a chopping board. Also have to admit, all staff was friendly and courteous. Even one lady asked how my sandwich was while we had lunch at bar tables. And seemed like water is self-server while staff takes your chopping board (or wooden board) when you're done. Our first visit. Went at 2p for late lunch and they were sold out except for Meatball Sandwich's. Bought two. Great portions but VERY spicy. I love Spicy but this was almost too much for me. My Wife loves Italian but doesn't like Spicy anything. Needless to say, she didn't eat very much of hers. We aren't giving up on this spot. The first time I came, they had ran out of their Porchetta due to high volume of people wanting it. Yes, I was bummed and had no other backup BUT I made up for it. I knew I had to come back for revenge so I went the next day. I came around 15 mins of opening and I see this butcher guy slicing away the pieces from the Porchetta. I can smell the aroma from the fat and crispy ends. It was heaven going up my nostrils! I knew they'd run out in an hr or two so I made sure I ordered two sandwiches ($9/each). To be honest, the meat is good tasting and texture is fine, but there wasn't juice or thickness to it. I didn't get that grease or enough fatty fried ends. I didn't care for the pesto type spread either, I thought it was just alright. I would grade this Porchetta sandwich a B-. Almost as soon as I was in line, a woman walked up to be and started attacking me for information. "What do they serve here? Have you eaten here before? What is that man carving? Why are there so many people?" While I tried to answer her questions as calmly and honestly as I could (you do not want to further rile up a confused and possibly hungry woman), I watched the other customers and the employees inside. It was very quickly clear that this dedicated staff knew exactly what they were doing. Chop up the porchetta, add the salsa verde, top with crunchy porchetta-roll skin, and pass on down the line. Earlier this year, Meat & Bread opened its first location in Seattle on Capitol Hill. And they will be expanding again as they will be opening another location in South Lake Union. Over Memorial Day weekend, I was visiting Vancouver and decided to make a visit to the original Meat & Bread location in Gastown to see if visiting the Seattle location was worthwhile. The restaurant interior is rather straightforward. There is a sandwich assembly line that is setup to be streamlined and a huge communal table setup for customers dining in to enjoy their meal. Like the space, the menu is simple. There are a few sandwiches to choose from including a daily special, a couple sides, desserts and drinks including beer, cider, soda and wine. The signature sandwich at Meat & Bread is their porchetta ($9). Interestingly the sandwich prices at this location are lower than the Capitol Hill shop and we are talking CAD here. At current currency exchange rates, the porchetta is under $7 USD in Vancouver whereas the same sandwich in Seattle is $10. Since it was my first time here, I decided to play it safe and order the porchetta sandwich. I was wondering if it matched up to the same name sandwich at Salumi in Seattle. Alas, the answer is no. But that is because this porchetta sandwich is different from the one at Salumi. The Salumi version is like a pork stew on a bun. Whereas the porchetta at Meat & Bread resembles Chinese roast park. They even give you mustard on the side. Don't get me wrong, the sandwich is good. The pork is crispy and tender. But if you go to a good Chinese BBQ shop, you could make a sandwich similar to this at home. As for service, I would have to say the staff here is very friendly and keep this shop in tidy shape amidst the flood of customers that come in. At the current sandwich pricing in Seattle, I am in no hurry to try the Meat & Bread on Capitol Hill when I can get a sandwich at Salumi at similar pricing. However if I am in Vancouver, I would visit this Meat & Bread again because the service here is good, ambiance is pleasant and the currency exchange rates make the sandwiches here a nice deal. read more

From April 11-13, instead of having their signature Porchetta carve, Meat & Bread will be carving up their own house made Pastrami to craft their Reuben Sandwich. This is my first experience with a Reuben and I was blown away. I loved how the smokiness of the meat worked the tartness of the sauerkraut and the cheesy richness from the gruyere. Because the sandwich is finished in a panini press the outside is perfectly toasted and crispy, and all the insides are melted and delicious. I actually waited for it to open at 11AM. I ordered the porchetta! The first bite I realized that the pork was quite dry and I was a bit disappointed and it wasn't what I remember it was. Throughout the my trip here in Vancouver, I was thinking about this and how disappointed I was. I decided to give the benefit of the doubt that it was just an one off and it was morning. So during my last day here, during the afternoon I came back and ordered the same thing. To be expectations, it was still dry and wasn't as good as I recalled when I used to live here. The salad served on the day I visited consisted of chickpeas, fennel, red onion, red cabbage and oranges... no filler mixed greens or butter lettuce. Sounds a little odd but it was so good and filling - even my boyfriend enjoyed it! The Porchetta Sandwich is also super good! The bread is crunchy on the outside and pillow soft on the inside. The Porchetta itself is cooked to perfection with crispy pork skin and juicy loin meat. Finally tried meat and bread for my very first time and of course I ordered the porchetta sandwich. The service was really quick and the store wasn't busy at all around 1 pm on a weekday. I have had heard so many good things about this sandwich shop and my friend and I finally got the chance to try it. First off I think the decor is really cool. Just like very rustic and meat hooks used as a toilet paper holders. So cool and I like that they had a large community table that made the atmosphere very casual. I ordered the buffalo chicken and my friend got the porchetta. The sandwiches itself look underwhelming but the taste was great. Both sandwiches where very filling and had a great balance of flavours. The buffalo chicken was a particularly messy experience because of the slaw and buffalo sauce. Had a pretty solid experience today at Meat and Bread! The beef chuck was on special for $9... but I was more in the mood to try the classic grilled cheese. I noticed there were long communal tables and a few tables by the window. I was kind of confused how the ordering system worked: wasn't sure if we had to take a seat first and wait for a server or grab our orders ourselves from the counter. The hostess standing by the water pitchers by the door promptly explained that we were to line up first and order at the counter and bring it ourselves to sit wherever we liked afterwards. There was a long line up when we arrived which showed that Meat and Bread surely was as popular as I heard it was! Our sandwiches were served on these cute wooden boards where they have a side of their special mustard and hot sauce. You can also add sides to your order! My friend decided to try to carrot soup which came in a cute little glass bowl. We decided to sit by the window since it was sunny (and we all know how wonderful food photos look with natural light) ...but that was kind of a bad idea. There's hardly any room between the isle seat and the people standing in line behind you... so you're constantly having to watch your food in case someone knocks your water over or swings their backpack into your face... haha. So I think next time I'll sit by the larger tables further into the restaurant. Also just a tip, you have to grab your own water, which isn't really too much of a nuisance.. but the cups are rather small so you might have to get up and re-fill frequently. I am a HUGE fan of grilled cheese sandwiches... and let me just say, I was pretty blown away! It was crispy, and chewy, and ooey and gooey ... pretty much everything I want in a grilled cheese sandwich. I think the secret is definitely in how well they toast the bread (in my opinion, anyway, it was perfect.) I also mixed the mustard and the hot sauce together for dipping... which went great with my sandwich! I definitely don't think it would have been as good without the hot sauce. Cuz, come on, hot sauce always makes a difference, does it not? At the end of our meal we decided to share the ice cream sandwich. It was HUGE! I'm allergic to nuts so I asked if it was nut free. Luckily it was. I think my favourite part was the buttery sugary-ness of the cookies. YUM. Like, I felt a bit guilty for wanting another one..... I really loved the vibrant energy of the place. The hustle and bustle is actually something I enjoyed. I've got a 10 hour layover at the airport, so I go directly to the joint to try this supposedly delicious meat concoction. I arrive at 2pm ready to get my meat and bread on. Then I see it, those dreaded words "SOLD OUT." Really?!? At 2pm on a Thursday? Arrrghh. It's like opening a present and getting a lump of coal. Love the décor, very industrial/rustic. There's some interesting taxidermy on the walls, and the bathrooms labeled "Meat" or "Bread" with the toilet paper rolls hanging off of meat hooks. It was pretty crowded, even at 3pm on a rainy Saturday! The neighborhood was pretty empty but it seemed like everyone in the vicinity was packed into Meat & Bread. Even the noodle place just next door didn't have a single customer. Despite there being a lot of people, the line moved fast (I barely had time to think about what I wanted to order) and there was a lot of turnover at the seats so it was easy to find a spot to sit. Sweet beats were being played (always good in my books). Find a seat along the long, communal table. It is a bit cramped but people, for the most part, are good about it and don't overstay. There's also jugs of water on a side table that you can help yourself to. We went with: - Turkey a la King ($9.00) - this was their daily special which consisted of garlic butter, mushroom cream sauce, pepper onion sauté and mixed greens. A very special holiday sandwich indeed. - Porchetta ($8.00) - their signature sandwich that comes with a salsa verde. The porchetta had nice crunchy, flavourful bits of pork rinds in it and the slices of meat were tender and juicy. The dollop of mustard is a nice touch. - Butternut squash soup ($4.00) - creamy but not too rich, which is tough to find in a good butternut squash soup. Bowl is more than enough to sample and share. You can buy Meat & Bread's sauces/spices! Take a look on the way in/out (sambal, salt rub and mustard were a few options). Happy I was finally able to try Meat & Bread. Came here for an exhibition around the waterfront and found this place on Yelp. I am so proud of my decision! The experience: It's in (or around?) Gastown and I loved that old building with modern interior vibe. Once we got there we noticed how popular it is than other restaurants / food stands.. Well, we immediately know we made a good choice! (It's on a wall, written clearly..lol Like 1000px font) It is quite a cool and easy way to order and pay. Nothing difficult and really fast and smooth. I got my order within 5 minutes and it was as easy as order-pay-eat! We ordered meatball sandwich and Porchetta sandwich with Soup (Tomato)and Salad (Coleslaw). Food: OMG. Excuse me but it was SO GOOD. I loved every bite of that meat and bread!!! THe meatball sandwich is really juicy and a bit spicy. You get a big chuck of meatball every single bite and with that kale and sauce...PERFECTION. I loved it. And the other Porchetta sandwich reminds me alot of the Hong Kong style BBQ crispy pork! The crispiness and mustard really got that similar taste to it. But a bit lighter and slimmer pork. I walked MILES for this place! And it did not disappoint. I ordered the Porchetta, while my boyfriend got the meatball. Both were very good! The meatball was a bit spicy for me though. (I'm weak) The porchetta, wow! The meat was flavorful, and moist! I appreciated how thin they cut the pieces, so it's easier to eat. The crackling added a nice crunch, and the salsa verde wasn't overpowering. The ciabatta roll was good too! What I really enjoyed was the dollop of mustard they give you with the sandwiches. Before I got to try Meat & Bread, I didn't really get the hype about their Porchetta sandwich as to me, nothing can really beat vietnamese sandwich or bánh mì! I've been eating this since I was a kid and I seriously think it's the best! (Don't worry, I still love vietnamese sandwiches!) On my last trip to Vancouver, I got the chance to try Meat & Bread's most famous sandwich: Porchetta sandwich with salsa verde and crackling. I think their sandwich is something that you cannot get elsewhere. The ingredients are really "simple" too i.e. there are just a few things but it is one of the most tasteful sandwiches I have ever had! The pork was so tender and juicy! But the best part was the crispy pork skin! The mix of juicy, soft and crunchy texture was a unique experience! The bread is a bit hard but seriously, you won't even notice is as you go since the porchetta is to die for! Portion-wise, the bread is on the smaller side but there was quite a lot of meat for the size of the bread. We ordered for takeout as we wanted to eat it along the Kitsilano beach (highly recommended). I find their takeout boxes to be really cute because of the cover with their logo and the fact that it is custom-made to the size of the sandwich. One of the best parts of Meat & Bread's Porchetta sandwich is that no matter if you eat is hot or cold, it is both DELICIOUS! I like the setting of the restaurant as when you enter, you can see the big counter with porchetta and bread. My favourite part was seeing the staff prepping the porchetta sandwiches (cutting the big porchetta into small pieces)! I would definitely go back for their Porchetta sandwich since I think it's a must in Vancouver! read more

I've been to Meat & Bread a handful of times and have enjoyed myself every time! The staff are always super friendly and the food simple and delicious. I've only ever gotten the Porchetta sandwich here, which is what they're known for. Watch them chop up that slow roasted pork loin/belly rolled up with herbs and hear the crackle of the crispy skin. The meat is served on a ciabatta bun with their house made salsa verde. The porchetta here reminds me a little of Chinese BBQ roast pork! They serve it with this mustard (which I don't normally like, but it pairs well with this sandwich?) For those who care about aesthetic instagram photos if you eat in at this location they serve it on a wooden board, but only at this Vancouver location and not the one by Burrard. A little messy to eat, but so worth. The prices continue to increase but that's life! Will continue to come back to this nice little sandwich shop. PS: I like asking for extra crackling!! Stopped by during a day in Gastown. We got the porchetta, which everyone around us got too. Hmm. Well, anyways. I split the sandwich and that was enough. The sandwich itself was super flavorful. Make sure to eat it while it is still warm! The bread is nicely toasted, the meat is warm and the chicharones are perfectly crispy! I liked it with the mustard to cut some of the rich flavors. I had the cider which was only ok. I wish I had ordered the beet salad too, but alas. Four stars for great execution on the porchetta sammy but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come again. read more

Great spot for lunch. Their sandwiches are finely crafted and I can see why people line up for the #turkducken sandwich." Although my favorite is their "meatball" which is a bit messy to eat but worth it! They also have a good space at this location to have a seat and enjoy. Their soups are also very tasty but don't be greedy and get both a soup and the sandwich unless you are very hungry! The sandwich themselves are quite filling. Vegetarians - there are daily salads and the good ole grilled cheese. Their service is pretty fast and the prices are reasonable for downtown. This place gets really busy around 12 so it's a good idea to come a bit earlier around 11.30 or so. TIP: they have a different special each Thursday so check their website out. The porchetta and chicharon sandwich was unbelievable! Juicy pork and crunchy chicharon with a green verde spread on a perfect roll. Big, abundance of flavor. We were walking down the street and did a double take when we saw this place. You could see the staff slicing and preparing the sandwich from the window. Did not disappoint! It was my first visit to meat and bread. I went in at two in the afternoon and had the buffalo chicken. I expected it to be a bit spicy but it wasn't it basically just tasted like chicken with coleslaw and ranch. It was decent but could've used some spice What what was disappointing to see was the garbage can next to my table overflowing well the staff members stood there chatting. There was also sauce on the wall. It's a pretty nice place and if I was the owner I would be pretty disappointed at the way things are being run there. read more
