This was another unexpectedly delicious surprise. M&B was in my list of food to either eat in Vancouver, or takeaway for the flight home. I ate porchetta stuffed inside freshly baked rolls in Orvieto, NYC and Tokyo (?), and I ate roasted pork with crackling skin throughout Asia and the Southern US, so I think I know how deliciously roasted pork tastes. I don't know if the chopped pork was over-salted and sauced, but at altitude of 30,000 feet and even after sitting cold for 3 hours, M&B's porchetta roll was so tasty and tender with bits of still-crunchy skin mixed in, I wished I bought 3 more to eat at home after my flight. read more

It was years ago that we first tried a sandwich at a different location and the family had such good memories we had to try again. Inside was a little empty around noon but the restaurant was quite spacious and modern. Last time the lines were so long so was this a sign? We ordered the porchetta sandwich and watched the staff prepare it. The porchetta sandwich we originally ate had left such a great first impression from long ago that it was the only choice for us even though it seemed a bit pricey now. Initial impressions were that the sandwich seemed smaller than before and there wasn't much stuffed inside. The bread to meat ratio was definitely skewed towards the bread. Nothing like the website photos. The porchetta and crackling mixture was quite savory but definitely could be a lot more including the salsa verde. A definite let down for us. I love meat and bread so this place is perfection! I love the rustic vibes of the Gastown location and they played excellent music when we were there! I got the porchetta sandwich - I wish they gave more crackling and/or the salsa verde. The sauce brought a hint of freshness that helps cut through the richness/fatness of the meat. Is it worth the hype? You tell me... In my opinion, yes and no. There are long line ups at times and food runs out at other times especially for their more popular sandwiches. The bread is tougher than I'd like it to be but the fillings are quite other worldly. After trying to traverse the crowd at the New Lunar Year parade, we saw Meat and Bread sign on the sidewalk and hustled inside quickly. Felt incredibly lucky because their hours on Yelp said they're closed, but Yelp is wrong! They're open on weekends now from 1130am to 5? (not sure of exact closing time). Right when you walk in, you come face to face with the carving station where the porchetta and crackling are glistening under the heating lamp. I didn't even have to look long at the menu on the right. I can't even remember what else is offered. Porchetta, please! My guy and I shared one sandwich because we weren't particularly hungry, but when you see the crackling just sitting there, you can't NOT try it if you're already there, right? Served with a dollop of mustard, it was truly a delicious marriage of crispy, tangy, fatty, succulent and chewy textures of pork, generous helping of that glorious crackling on that soft ciabatta roll. *chef's kiss* to the people at Meat and Bread. Some crackling fell off my sandwich and being the nice person that I am, I fed one precious piece to my guy and watched as he closed his eyes in ectasy. I instantly regretted it. The Meat & Bread in Gastown always smells so good and is never empty! My group stopped by on the way into Vancouver, and it was a wonderful first meal. I got the Porchetta Sandwich, and my boyfriend got the Meatball Sandwich - we both liked each others sandwiches, so we ended up switching. I personally thought the porchetta sandwich was a bit dry, but I know it's super popular. It comes with a good amount of meat and the other toppings go really well with the porchetta. I like the meatball sandwich more, since it's much more saucy :) Both of the sandwiches are really filling so you won't go wrong with either. I've also heard that their grilled cheese with the tomato soup is good, so it sounds like their entire menu is great. Next time I'm in the area I'd definitely stop by. read more

(+) We had a Meatball Sub ($10 CAD) and the Daily Special which was a braised beef sandwich($12 CAD). I really enjoyed my braised beef sandwich a lot! The meat was cooked just right and bread was tasty as well. (+)Had a craft soda that was pretty good! I'm actually not big into those things, but I rather enjoyed my "Speed King" ($3 CAD) lol (-) Wasn't a big fan of the non-stop rap music playing the whole time we were there. (-) Would have been nice to have fountain drinks available in addition to the craft drinks. (-) Pretty small menu that could use some more options. This place was a-okay. Came by just prior to closing on a Friday night as downtown for an event. I was advised this place is quite busy during the weekday lunch hour, but it was pretty much empty when we stopped by. Unfortunately they only had two of the five sandwiches still available but understandable given the popularity of their porchetta sandwich and the hour we arrived. I like the presentation of sandwich on a wood board with the sauce on the board itself. I ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich and it was quite tasty...even better when dipped in the buffalo sauce. The service was quick and the person making the sandwich was pleasant. With good service and a tasty sandwich, it was a positive food experience and happy to recommend Meat & Bread if in the area and looking for a sandwich. PS. My friend and I were cruising Yaletown for breakfast on a Sunday morning and the line at our chosen location was so long we would have still been there on Monday. Craving food and feeling a bit hangry, we sauntered down the street to Gastown looking for something that was (a) open and (b) wouldn't require an hour of bantering with other line-dwellers before we were seated. As we rounded a corner I remembered a place I'd eaten at a couple of times in the past: Meat & Bread. No, M&B isn't a breakfast place but let's be honest: it was well after 11am so we were clearly in the brunch zone anyway. And did I mention HANGRY!? Plus the intoxicating smells emanating from the open front door were impossible to resist - and there was no line. I ordered the porchetta sandwich and a can of Powell Street beer, and my friend ordered the meatball sandwich. They made our sandwiches right in front of us and gave us a knife so we could split them. We quickly found a table (there aren't many private ones - but there's a huge communal table too) and started noshing on our sammies. OMG the porchetta was amazing. Confession: I'd had it before. It was still amazing! My friend, who is also a well-known meatball expert, could NOT stop raving about her meal. I was excited to swap halves and we both agreed that while the porchetta was excellent the meatballs were a surreal experience that took us to another universe. I decided to try this place out today and I ordered two sandwiches a Huli Huli chicken and the Buffalo chicken. The girl was trying to push me to go for the pork sandwich but the piece of pork she was pointing me to looked so unappetizing sitting open on the counter top. The sandwiches i ordered were at best mediocre, nothing to rave about. Both were basically 75% bread + 10% Salad+10% Chicken & 5% Mayonaise & sauces. Honestly super overrated for $14 a piece taxes included. Seriously? Even A&W or any middle eastern traditional Shawarma place makes a far superior tasting sandwich or burger than this place for half the cost. A&W is also hormone free chicken and their beef is Angus. All I am saying is that the food is highly overrated and for the cost its not worth it. read more

Meat and Bread is one of my favourite lunch and sandwich spots in the city. There are multiple locations but the one on the corner of Gastown is a regular of mine. Inside the clean and minimalist store is a tidy and welcoming bartop complimented by carving station (something you don't see much of these days) below a simple sandwich menu. Each of their sandwiches are delicious, from the meatball and buffalo chicken, to their vegetarian-friendly grilled cheese. But special praise should be reserved for the legendary porchetta. This simple but remarkable pork sandwich, with the most basic ingredient set, is always outstanding and never out of place. For meat-eaters it is a MUST HAVE! And that's the thing about M&B their recipes are very simple, just a few ingredients between excellent bread. What more could you want? You'll often find a line-up around lunch time and on more than one occasion I have arrived late to find the porchetta all gone for the day but really its just a testament to a place which has captured serious interest and plaudits from all kinds. read more
