Situated at a quiet corner of Dunbar St. is a charming, family owned restaurant called La Notte that serves up some incredibly delicious Italian eats. Featured here: Carpaccio Mussels Eggplant Parmigiana Linguine Alla Vongole Marguerita Pizza Tiramisu Mussels were plump, moist, tender, juicy, and flavorful. These were some of the best mussels I've had in a very long time. Marguerita Pizza was tasty but more cheese would have been preferred. Eggplant Parmigiano far exceeded my expectations. To be honest, I was a bit skeptical about ordering this dish. The last time I ordered eggplant in an Italian restaurant, I found that the eggplant was not as soft as I had hoped it would be, and was very much lacking in flavor. Not the case with this eggplant dish. My husband tried my Eggplant Parmigiana and he was blown away by it as well. Linguine Alla Vongole and the Fettucine that came with my Eggplant Parmigiana had both been cooked al dente and were accompanied with very flavorful sauces. It's been awhile since I've had a good Tiramisu, and this was definitely a good one! In most respects the service was decent; however, we were a bit turned off by response our server gave when one person in our group inquired about the chocolate cake they were serving for dessert. He asked the server if she could describe the chocolate cake. Her response seemed to imply that it was a stupid question to ask. As though we should already know from the name of the dessert, that it's a cake and it's chocolatey. The question was asked though in the hopes of receiving information that might describe whether it was moist, or dense, or filled with chocolate ganache, or whether it had a crunchy wafer in the middle, or whether it was covered in chocolate buttercream frosting. I know I know it's unfair considering their pocket-friendly price point but that's exactly how we felt , like they for sure emphasize quantity over quality here . Their salmon tasted fishy , pizza somewhat soggy , and the osso bucco surprisingly rough . It didn't help when a patron behind us was swearing profusely throughout the night . We were a party of five and we waited for our dinner for about 45 min. Everybody else who came after us got the food before us. My salmon was like a cardboard, with no taste at all. Nobody was happy with the food, only pizza was dissent. Bellini was basically slash with hardly any alcohol or syrup. When it came time to pay the bill, the waiter decided to split the bill between five of us, not even asking for our preference. This is the first time in my life, I left the restaurant hungry and $50 short. I 've been here before, but it was under different ownership and it was a very nice place. What a terrific gem of a place! I've passed this corner restaurant a thousand times, it seems, as it is next to my dentist's office (and god knows, I've had a ton of dental issues the past few years! But I digress....). This place has always looked SO cute from the outside, with all its class windows facing the street on two sides, and illuminated strings of white lights hanging from the eaves. I've always wanted to try it out but never had the opportunity - until now. And now that I've dined here, I already have plans to return next week. For real! This place is not fancy (which is part of the reason why I love it so!): it's your typical, traditional, casual, family-type Italian restaurant that most of us have memories of when we were growing up. In my case, there was a place like this in Montreal in the early 60's that my family brought us to weekly, with stucco and frescos on the walls and sculptures that looked like garden knockoffs of famous Michelangelo works, that served heaping bowls of spaghetti with meatballs and classic, hearty pasta dishes. This place immediately reminded me of that (as it did the others in my party. Seems we all have recollections of a family Italian restaurant like this!). So I admit, the nostalgia factor weighs in on my experience here, in a big, positive way. But there's no denying that the ambiance and the service and the food were top-notch, too! The interior is welcoming, with warm wooden tables, and a fully stocked bar, and a piano player in the back (nice touch!). And I already mentioned the two window walls, creating a light-filled interior, and the stings of white lights. Very pretty. The menu was extensive, and the dishes, traditional. You won't find any newfangled fusion cuisine here or deconstructed gastronomic creations. Nor will you find any artistically plated meals. Forget all that frou-frou stuff. If you're into any of that, you will be disappointed here. This restaurant serves mainstay Italian dishes, the kind of food an Italian grandma would be dishing up. Seriously. We ordered spaghetti bolognese, fettuccini Alfredo and linguini alla vongole (i.e., with clams). Every dish was hot, fresh and delicious, and the pasta was cooked to perfection (i.e., al dente, the way I like it). And even the bread they brought to the table, served with oil and balsamic vinegar, was fresh and chewy and delicious. We all loved our meals. And the portions were very generous, too (I had to bring 3/4 of mine home, in fact! Bonus). We were too full for dessert. Prices are super reasonable for the quantity and quality of the meal. Our server was great: super attentive but not hovering. All in all, we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals here and we've already made plans to return next week. Great place! read more

If you are looking for a very reasonably priced Italian restaurant that is both tasty and offers good sized portions, Le Notte is a great choice! Located in the Dunbar neighborhood, this cute corner restaurant has nice street views for people watching! Inside you will find wood tables and chairs with wood floors and bar with cushy seats. It's nice, but no really a fancy place; think casual Italian dinning. We visited on the Remembrance Day long weekend on the Monday and they were open, but completely dead. We were seated promptly and our seats of choice! Service with very fast and pleasant. Food: Complimentary bread with oil and balsamic vinegar. Wonderful! Soft and fluffy bread!! For an appetizer we started with the Beef Carpaccio, which was tasty but way over dressed. The amount of dressing took away from the beef flavor. Next we ordered the Vegetarian pizza and added spicy Italian sausage. It was very tasty with thin style crust, the right amount of chewy and crunch. It came loaded with vegetables and goat cheese, and of course the sausage we added :) We also have their pesto pasta a try and that was also quite tasty. I thought it was a bit shy on the meat and sundries tomatoes, but still quite tasty. For dessert, we ordered the chocolate mouse cake and their creamy cheesecake. Honestly, neither were very good. They cake was really just a chocolate cake with sickly sweet icing. The cheese cake was more like a whipped cream cake. I do not suggest dessert here. Wine: wine list is pretty decent with a good amount of options and fair prices. I believe they were 6 ounce glasses for $8-10. My bf has a Ceaser and that was $6.50 In summary, for fair prices and good portions I highly recommend this place. I would suggest it for pasta night when you just want the food without the fuss! Went back last night for my wife's birthday after a round of golf. The new owner has stayed true to the traditions of this restaurant and it has not changed. If anything, the food tastes even better. The caesar salad was very good, the veal piccata was tender and delicious. The staff is quite friendly and efficient. Looking forward to our next visit. read more

I would have liked to have given this restaurant more stars-- as their pasta was delicious--but the service was horrible. The service was overly aggressive, rude, inattentive, and seemed to have no real understanding of how to serve. Didn't understand how to deliver a meal, or pour a glass of wine. Incredible food, wonderful service, exquisite live music from a live pianist. Such a wonderful atmosphere within, clearly a place that's adored by locals (we're just visiting) and will be sorry not to visit more often. A crunchy top with herb, but the inside is soft and fluffy - Good service, but could be a little more attentive. We waited a little to order and get the bill. Con - Live music and the hustle and bustle made talking hard. It was quite loud and not suitable for conversation. - Small portion for entrees, but decent size portion for pastas - I got the clam pasta with garlic and white wine sauce. It was disappointing! There were a lot of baby clams, but only 4 whole clams. I guess you get what you pay for. The pasta was just a tad undercooked, but what's most disappointing was the sauce. I didn't get the strong aroma of garlic so the dish was awfully bland and under-seasoned. Tasted like pasta tossed in olive oil and cooked in white wine. The atmosphere is quiet and cozy, the decor has a "Commercial Drive" Italian feel, and there is ample parking on the street. I've been here a couple of times and so far there are no complaints. I've been here quite a few times over the past few years, but only for their $7.99 pasta specials on Tuesday nights. I have YET to be disappointed though. It is delicious and the atmosphere is quite nice! You can dress up, feel fancy and not have to spend a whole lot! Ideal for birthday parties or dates, or just get togethers with friends you have not seen in a while. Dinners are served with the classic Italian bread, warmed and a bit toasty with extra virgin olive oil and balsamic on a plate. [Pasta Night] It was a friend's birthday last Saturday evening and La Notte was the venue. By the time dinnertime came, I was so famished I would've eaten a dirty popsicle off the sidewalk. I was greeted by a charming little restaurant decorated with christmas lights, live piano music and the smell of fresh pasta. It was wonderous! After quickly perusing the menu, I settled on the bruschetta classica to start and the spaghetti bolognese as a main. The bruschetta consisted of four tomato-topped pieces of toasted bread each the size of a large pickle. Delicious! The spaghetti bolognese was your typical red meat sauce pasta. While it didn't amaze my tastebuds, it was still a decent dish. My only qualm was the portion size. Since I basically walked into the restaurant malnourished, the dish was a tad small. However, it would be fine for the average person. As always, I do like to sample my S.O.'s food - the linguine alla crema. This was the clear winner and buyer's remorse instantly kicked in. Note to self: get the linguine alla crema next time. At roughly $15 a plate, there's good value. This homey little pasta joint it starting to grow on me. The location of this Italian eatery is a little off (Dunbar Street by 16th Avenue), but that doesn't deter from the quality of the food served or the excellent service you'll receive while you dine at La Notte. I went in for dinner a couple of nights ago with two friend from university. All three of us commented on how strange it was that, although we'd known of the place and passed by it many times over the years, none of us had ever stopped in for a bite to eat. Stranger still, considering how delicious everything was! The menu includes all you'd expect to find at an Italian joint -- fresh and homemade pastas in a variety of sauces, prepared with love and attention. I had the prosciutto tortellini and it was very good for the price (~$14). One dish was filling for one person. I couldn't even finish. The clam linguine was ok, not too flavourful. Wish they put black pepper on the table. The atmosphere is very date night like. They have candles on the tables and wide windows with a mountain view. The only issue I had was that we were finishing up the tortellini and the waitress asked if we were done. We both were not sure because it seemed like she was rushing us out as there was a line forming. She said "last bites?" and we said yes, but she took the plate away anyway. So that was off putting. One of the West side's best kept secrets. Excellent and fresh Italian food, homemade not in a factory then shipped in in portion bags. Great wine menu and espressos. The prices are very inexpensive for fresh and delicious food. They usually have a live piano player (good he/she is alive)! Live music that adds a nice atmosphere. Last time in this diner it was 25 years back. Fast forward it is still in the same location and the same chef...so it means something to all their loyals. Don't be mistaken this place is not meant for Fine Italian dining. Most their supporters are locals from Dunbar, Kits and Pt Greys. Walk in there and feel like a family reunions all the time. Otherwise it is a very cozy and warm place to be in. Sauce is always the heart and soul of Italian cuisine. No difference in La Notte except their sauce is nothing fancy, thick and heavy but very consistent. It tastes just like mom's home cooking...hearty. Not a great menu and the pasta is not home made but it serves its purpose. The escargot is to die for and the portion is very satisfying. Unlike Yale town there are no plate presentation but it reflects the reasonable price to all its dish. Staff is attentive and friendly and best yet, live piano entertainment in the weekends. My daughter and I walked in at 5:15 on Saturday and did not need reservations. By the time we left at 6:30 it was full so plan accordingly. Have driven by this restaurant for years and was always curious, finally a friend recommended it so gave it a shot. Simple decor, nicely lit with music and friendly staff. Ample free parking on the surrounding streets. We shared a bruschetta appetizer and had the linguine alla crema as well as the Vitelli ai funghi. Prices were reasonable with pasta at $15 and veal at $22. Dessert was chocolate cake, this was standard and my daughter liked but I thought it was so-so. Neighbourhood Jewel! Everything about our dining experience at La Notte was five star. This family run restaurant has been knocking it out of the park for years; these folks know what they're doing. An inviting atmosphere with friendly staff, including the chef who stopped at our table to inquire about our meal. This is my favourite pasta place. The staff is so friendly there (this is a family-run establishment, by the way) and the portions are very generous. Best of all the food is fantastic. I always order the penne primavera, which is penne with various vegetables in either tomato or cream sauce (I get tomato). All of the pasta dishes are great though. The best day to come would be Tuesdays because they have pasta specials. However, just note that because of the great deals it also means Tuesdays are the busiest nights. read more

Although I've been commuting past this place for well over a year, we haven't popped in until now. I think this is because La Notte is located at a slightly sleepy section of Dunbar for night time dining. Our impression is that La Notte is a very chill restaurant, with a family friendly vibe. Each time we've been, the large tables in the middle have been filled with grandparents, children, and parents. The pasta is excellent, I especially like the red sauce. Service is friendly. Excellent deal on pasta Tuesday nights, which gets packed, so reservations are recommended. We've also heard that Friday and Saturday nights there is live piano/singing. I have been here for take-out and for their Pasta special Tuesdays (Pasta for $8!). The service is a bit delayed to sit you to a table but they're very friendly when they do. The decor of the restaurant is lovely - it's warm and has a kind of romantic vibe with all the candlelight, but is lit enough that children are also a good presence. I appreciate that versatility. They have a pianist who performs on the weekends and she's excellent, because she also sings and is very modest. She let me tinker around on her piano and was quite fond of my playing! So were the staff - they keep remembering my piano and some who weren't even there the night I played a little were like "when can i hear you play?" Their focaccia is not bad, though a bit dry. Not a bad gratuity bread, because the oil and vinegar are of a decent quality. Their dishes are lovely. Their caesar and their onion and tomato salads are hearty portions but nothing is too heavy or overly seasoned, allowing the freshness to shine through. And the pastas are great! I've had the Tortellini di Notte (tortellini with prosciutto - which is a great combo since they don't oversalt the sauce, meaning you have a very mild pasta with bits of ham to accent the mild cheese flavors), a special pappardelle with osso buco (long, wide noodles with stewed veal shanks, which has a great balance of flavors since the sauce is some kind of white wine and tomato combo, but with no emphasis so strong that it drowns out the others, letting the meat be the main bold element that shines through), and a scallop and prawns linguini with a cream sauce - which was thick and a bit heavy-handed compared to the others, but still good. Very reasonably priced, the food is nicely balanced, and friendly service that remembers your name. A perfect place to go for a casual weekday night with friends or family. read more

I have been going to La Notte on and off for over a decade simply because it's conveniently located near my home. Known for its cheap pasta takeaways ($12 including tax) and cheap pasta Tuesdays ($8) this is an ok place if you live nearby. I can't say I'd recommend driving more than 5-10 minutes to dine here. The menu is fairly simple and if your'e not a picky eater, you'll definitely be able to find something to satisfy your needs. The pastas are tasty and all meals come with a couple slices of focaccia per person. They don't do refills on the bread here so this could be a consideration if you visit on a Tuesday when the restaurant is packed and you have to wait a long time for your food. On a side note, La Notte does not honor their $8 deal on Tuesdays for takeaway. I'm not sure I understand their logic behind this (seeing as takeaway doesn't require the use of additional seating.wait staff), but thought I should share this with other Yelpers so they don't end up with an unexpected $12 charge (like I did). read more
