A cute hole in the wall restaurant. Came here on valentine's day and loved the ambiance. The tables are quite packed together, so don't be surprised if you're super close to the table next to you or someone has to squeeze by to get to their table. Service was decent. Had to wait a couple minutes, despite having a reservation, but it is a bit expected on a holiday like Valentines. The food though was FANTASTIC. We got the pesto gnocchi and the linguini ai gamberoni. It was delicious! The portions were average and the price point was comparable to other Italian restaurants. My wife and I went to L'Artista by pure chance. We were coming back from Langley to our hotel in downtown Vancouver and could not find anywhere to eat. My wife found them on her phone and called. They were able to seat us, and although we had to wait it was so worth it. The ambiance is great. It is a small cozy restaurant. We noticed that everyone seemed to be having a good time and a lot of them knew the staff, so we thought that was a good sign. And it was a good sign, The service was very friendly and timely. And we never felt rushed. And the food!!! Well the food was excellent. We shared a very light and fresh caprese salad, we both had pasta and then shared a chocolate mousse. The pasta was perfectly al dente. And although my wife does not usually like mousse I had to share it once she had a taste. We loved everything. Next time we are in Vancouver we will go out of our way to make sure we eat there again. read more

We did not have a chance to come here for the last couple of years because of the pandemic and various other reasons. We recently returned to attend a family dinner of 11. We ordered 2 large family sized salads to share. Everyone ordered their own entrees. I had the Linguini Vongole. It was even better than I remember. The pasta was al dente, the sauce was a delicious wine and garlic sauce. Even though it is not on the menu, my Aunt was able to order the dish with a tomato sauce instead of the wine sauce. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. This is a family run restaurant. They used to operate a restaurant downtown where we would sometimes go for lunch. This was a Friday night pickup take out order and I was looking to spend on a local area restaurant this time. I've lived here for years and it's been a long time since I've visited this one. The restaurant looked really well organized, with dividers and the staff looked pro. They wear the clear face shield that goes from the chin area and up to about the nose. I'm not a huge fan of these but I do like being able to see people's faces in whole! Anyways, seems like they have a reduced menu. Ended up ordering a bunch of different pastas, they didn't have any big meaty entrée. Usually I'm taking out 5-6 orders for family style back at home. Overall I was turned off how oily most of the dishes were. Tomato based sauces, wine based sauces and even all the creme based sauces. By the end of our meal, the oil in the sauces were separating out into clear little pools of oil. Not sure if it was just a lot of butter or some other kind of oil. It reminded me of cheaper pasta restaurants, where it's like a strategy to make sure you feel full. I'm aware some may like this and consider it normal, and that it's just very rich sauces, however I just ended up feeling overwhelmed with it. I'm not an olive oil expert but good ones don't make me feel overwhelmed. Initial looks and taste were good but it's not a style I prefer. read more

Had dinner there again on Friday night. Place was packed, great atmosphere. Had the Gamberoni again, it is still excellent. I had the Veal Parm, my wife had the Vitello Al Funghi - both were delicious, with the veal nice and tender and good sized portions. The tomato sauce on my entree was clearly homemade and very fresh, I could eat a whole bowl of it by itself it was so good. We paired with the "Submission" Cabernet from CA, it was very good, reasonably priced and matched the entrees well. I walked in last night (a Saturday) and was able to get a table immediately. Their pasta dishes are both fulfilling (the size of each dish is decent for the price you're paying) and delicious. Therefore, I consider this place a hidden gem and definitely worth going to. Both dishes came out suspiciously fast and very, very hot (too hot to eat). Portion size was good, but for $17.50 for pasta I expect amazing taste with lots of lovely fresh veggies in the sauce. No veggies, sauce was ok. Not bad, just meh. I had a cappuccino which had over a tablespoon of grounds in it ($4.75) and when I pointed it out (and the server said, "oh I could read your tea leaves!"), server told me she would let them know, but didn't offer to take it off the bill. This would have been a real waste of money without the coupon. With the coupon, only a partial waste. All that said, I've heard from others the meat dishes without pasta are good. Very rich cream sauces from when I went. A good sized portion that I could not finish. Not too big, and not too small. The area inside is really small though, and they definately put enough tables in the joint. The lighting is pretty dim too, as it has that rustic feel in this place. For an Italian restaurant, who is supposed to really know about pasta, they really didn't get the cooking right for it and my ravioli was too soft. You could barely feel the taste of the veal inside. The mozzarella on top was just wrong, and not Italian at all, but I won't take it in consideration since it was my choice anyway. Fourth time here and once again we had a great meal. Nice old school family run Italian restaurant. These are slowly disappearing and being replaced by massive chain places serving "Italian" food. This is real deal homemade style cuisine and all the staff speak Italian to each other. Nice. Had one of the best Caprese salads ever...the pesto on it was a game changer! Had our usuals, fettuccine fruiti de mare and my wife had her lasagna that she craves. Excellent as usual, used my bread to mop my plate up, the Italian side of my Chinese upbringing. That says something about a business that they are able to keep staff happy for so long. Family building! They also have been kepping customers happy for years and years and years. Go there. Ask them whats good and you'll see how much they truly appreciate what they are doing, which is serving you some delicious food, and they are not just rhyming off some list of specials. Food was so good, service was great. They didn't even think twice when we brought our toddler. They had a high chair that they brought out and no problem at all. We had the calamari- not deep fried but delicious and no "fishy" taste at all. Gnocchi was tasty and perfectly cooked. Linguine was the same, perfectly done. The portions were decent sized so we had a bunch of leftovers. We also had an entertainment coupon which the server gave back to us so we could reuse it which is a nice bonus. Overall Italian, they serve great homemade pasta with gourmet options, including the rare but underrated risotto. If you're foolish enough to mix up ethics with eating, you might not enjoy the veal, but it is succulent and perfect with the brown mushroom sauce. Prices range anywhere between $15-$30 for an entrée, depending on whether you want penne or a 10 once pepper steak. They accept Entertainment coupons, which is a big bonus. This time I had the ravioli with mushrooms and sun dried tomatoes in a sherry sauce. Wow, it was tasty. The sauce was so smooth and creamy, and the mushrooms gave it such a deep flavour. The pasta was cooked al dente, and it was just as good the second day! We could chat and enjoy ourselves without bothering the other customers. I really enjoyed the Linguine Vongole. It had lots of claims and it was delicious. The servings are a perfect size, not to big or too small and the price is right too. We ordered three different salads for the table, caesar, house and tomato and boccocini, all delicious!
