A janitorial position requiring considerably less contact with the public might be far better suited to someone with such spectacularly misanthropic tendencies. Darling, if you don't like dealing with customers and give us attitude, perhaps customer service is not for you. Janitorial job is, by far, the most suitable for a person who happens to be a misanthropic manager. Customer service requires courtesy, darling. Contempt for customers is not a managerial qualification. I have rarely encountered a business so determined to make its own customers regret walking through the door. The food is mediocre Chinese takeaway fare at rather immodest prices. It is edible, certainly, but there is nothing sufficiently exceptional about it to compensate for the astonishingly poor customer service. The principal problem is the woman currently operating the establishment, whose manner towards customers is so consistently rude, dismissive and unpleasant that one begins to wonder whether she understands the rather elementary principle that customers are not an interruption to a business. They are the reason the business exists. There is something almost fascinating about watching a business take regular customers for granted. Perhaps having little nearby competition has created the illusion that courtesy is optional. It is not. Customers may tolerate mediocre food for convenience, but very few will tolerate being treated with contempt indefinitely. Even disposable chopsticks and forks are charged at 50 cents each. On its own, that might merely seem petty. Combined with overpriced, thoroughly ordinary food and dreadful customer service, however, it becomes wonderfully symbolic: apparently every small courtesy has a price here, except rudeness, which is supplied in abundance and entirely free of charge. The truly remarkable thing is that the food is not even the greatest threat to this restaurant. The attitude is. Restaurants survive because customers return, recommend them and feel welcome spending their money there. Drive enough people away and eventually there is nobody left to inconvenience. Perhaps management should remember that a regular customer is not an entitlement. Neither is a good reputation. Both are earned slowly and can be lost remarkably quickly. In an age when customers can publicly describe exactly how they were treated, behaving as though their patronage is beneath you is not merely rude. It is commercially foolish. If this establishment ever finds itself wondering why loyal customers stopped returning, why recommendations disappeared, or why people began spending their money elsewhere, I would suggest looking somewhere considerably closer than the kitchen. A mirror might be useful. Courtesy costs absolutely nothing. Losing customers because you could not manage it can become extraordinarily expensive. And should this business someday struggle because customers finally decide they have had enough, I sincerely hope nobody blames the economy, competition or supposedly "difficult" customers. Sometimes a business does not need an enemy. It simply needs someone behind the counter sufficiently determined to destroy its reputation one customer at a time. ZERO STAR. The food is forgettable. The prices are questionable. But the customer service? My dear, that is memorable for entirely the wrong reasons. One final piece of advice: treat every customer with dignity, because one never knows which departing customer will take ten others with them. And unlike your 50-cent chopsticks, good manners are still free.
